#64: Motherhood is a Spiritual Calling: How Will You Respond?

    Moms Off The Record

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 27, 2025 74:32

Motherhood demands that we see the beauty and the lessons in the micro moments that most people take for granted while mindlessly scrolling on their phones, rushing out the door, or even when they're physically present but mentally checked out. The magic of motherhood happens in the quotidian, mundane, messy interactions, not in the elaborate, grand gestures. The spiritual calling of motherhood is available to every mother; the question is, is every mother ready to answer its call? When our frenetic society obsessed with metrics, productivity, efficiency, and jam-packed schedules is telling us to do more and be more, that should be our cue to slow down and be nowhere else but present. If we aren't really present for our kids, then what is the point of all of this anyway? What magical, picture-perfect moment are we trying to fast forward to, and why does our culture laud business as if there is no higher honor to achieve? Join just the two of us as we reflect upon how each of us is deepening our response to the spiritual calling of motherhood.Resources + Books Mentioned: Rebecca Giannini - The Present Parents Coaching (code MOTR saves you 15%)Scattered Minds by Dr. Gabor Mate, MDThe Conscious Parent by Dr. Shefali Tsabary, MDThe Seven Spiritual Laws for Parents by Deepak ChopraSupport the showJOIN OUR NEW, PRIVATE COMMUNITY! In this episode we answer questions from Mason, Brian, and Anonymous.  We discuss portfolio transitions from a highly overlapped portfolio and related consideration, treasury strips funds and leveraged ETFs (twice), and the power of advice from the great Jim Rohn.  UNLIMITED POWER.Just remember that "Affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion."And we discuss our campaign for the Father McKenna Center and Quebecois updates to our website.Links:Father McKenna Center Donation Page:  Donate - Father McKenna CenterThe Source of the "We Don't Know" Clip:  Jim Rohn Join the 3% Club and Walk away from the 97%Breathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:Transforming your portfolio into a risk parity approach doesn't have to be complicated, but it does require both strategy and courage. This episode dives deep into listener questions about making that transition while navigating tax implications and psychological barriers. When Mason asks about converting his advisor-built collection of funds into a risk parity portfolio, Frank reveals a crucial insight most investors miss: holding multiple similar funds creates "false diversification." Those four large-cap funds in your portfolio? They're basically the same investment with different names. True diversification comes from understanding what's inside each fund, not collecting different tickers. For those curious about leveraged ETFs like UPRO, Brian's question leads to fascinating observations about why some leveraged products perform better than others. The conversation reveals why Treasury strips funds like GOVZ/ZROZ make reasonable substitutions for standard Treasury allocations, while leveraged gold ETFs might be problematic for long-term investors. Frank shares his personal experience reducing his own UPRO allocation and explains why experimentation with small portions of your portfolio is the wisest approach to newer investment strategies. The philosophical foundation of the show emerges when a listener asks about the "Nobody Knows" sound clip. The attribution to motivational speaker Jim Rohn opens a window into the mindset that drives successful investing. Rohn's philosophy that "affirmation without discipline is the beginning of delusion" perfectly captures why just thinking about better investment outcomes isn't enough—you must take action to create them.Ready to reshape your investment approach? This episode provides both the practical steps and the motivational spark to move forward confidently. As Rohn reminds us, "If you think investing is risky, wait till you get the tab for not investing."Support the show

In this episode of The First Day from The Fundraising School, host Bill Stanczykiewicz, Ed.D., sits down with executive search guru Bill Peterson of CarterBaldwin to unpack the high-stakes world of CEO transitions, and their ripple effect on fundraising. Think of it as succession planning with heart, spreadsheets, and maybe a few tissues. Drawing from the recent Compassion International case study, Peterson emphasizes that a successful handoff isn't just about filling a seat; it's about preserving mission momentum, minimizing disruption, and setting the new leader up for a heroic entrance. Peterson drops some wisdom for both boards and outgoing CEOs, stressing the importance of clear communication, humility, and board engagement. “This is a board-led process,” he says, cautioning against over-reliance on the outgoing CEO, no matter how legendary. And for those veteran leaders? It's time to channel your inner Zen master and begin the art of letting go. “Great leaders don't just know when to leave, they help others walk in,” Peterson notes, highlighting the delicate dance of influence without control. From personalized office redesigns to tear-jerking public ceremonies, the Compassion International story reads like a case study in grace. Peterson shares how outgoing CEO Wes Stafford quite literally made space for his successor Jimmy Miato; moving offices, updating nameplates, even reaching out to Jimmy's wife to make his new digs feel like home. Meanwhile, Jimmy returned the favor with humility and gratitude, underscoring the importance of honoring legacy while charting a fresh course. And fundraisers, listen up: donor communication is not optional, it's vital. Peterson outlines how keeping donors in the loop before, during, and after a leadership change can make or break your fundraising continuity. “Donors love stability,” he reminds us, and stability comes from thoughtful, strategic transition planning. With 14 practical insights from CarterBaldwin's study and a healthy dose of humanity, this episode is a goldmine for anyone navigating the leadership baton pass, because in fundraising, the handoff might just be your most important move.

Instead, she celebrates it as the natural outcome of good parenting: “If you're doing it right, your children will leave your home and you'll get fired from the best job you ever had—and that's the perfect outcome.” Most profoundly, Bernadette reminds us that our children are not “our happiness projects.” Releasing expectations allows both parents and children to pursue authentic lives, leading to genuine happiness and meaningful connection. Highlights & Key Takeaways:Understanding your mother's relationships with her own mother can offer healing from “mother wounds.”Transitioning from “the sage on the stage” to “the guide on the side” in parenting encourages trust and autonomy.Children are individuals with their own paths, not reflections of parenting success or failure.Respect and trust in your adult children's judgment strengthen your relationship and their autonomy.Bernadette Catalana BioBernadette Catalana is one of seven children—six of them daughters. In a landmark 6-3 decision, the Supreme Court rules that states can ban gender transition procedures for minors—halting the left's push for medicalized ideology, speech codes, and potential parental disempowerment. At the same time, former President Donald Trump demands Iran's unconditional surrender amid rising Middle Eastern tensions, while the Ayatollah's regime continues to target Israeli civilians. This dual-pronged broadcast dissects the left's cultural overreach and dangerous foreign entanglements, exposing coordinated attacks on parental rights, national security, and constitutional freedoms. This week I am pleased to share a conversation with the Philadelphia-based, sound artist and sound designer, musician, field recordist, architectural designer, Saumon Oboudiyat. Saumon collaborated with PSO to create a sprawling intricate synth soundscape to a particularly vibrant dawn chorus of birds recorded from the porch at PSO HQ in Austin to create PSO no.234 Considering Transitions, but before we get into that, let me explain what PSO is.Porch Swing Orchestra is an art project that explores the relationship between sound and images. Most images are taken on the site where the sound was created and/or recorded. Our orchestra is comprised of birds, guitars, artists, poets, and passing cars that spontaneously create ephemeral symphonic chance-inspired compositions. The original site and hub for all things PSO can be found at porchswingorchestra.org.Saumon Oboudiyat is the founder of sohme production which is the moniker under which Oboudiyat conducts his sound practice. His practice includes, but is not limited to, music production, film scoring, & traditional and EMF recordings. sohme's work integrates analog & digital synthesis, acoustic instrument performance, and field recordings capturing the built and natural environments. He weaves these practices into experimental, textured, cinematic, and immersive compositions. Saumon is also one half of the singer-songwriter duo, MVSO. His debut solo album as sohme will be released under UK based Phantom Limb's Spirituals imprint on August 15th. He holds a M Arch from the University of Michigan and a BS Arch from Temple University, with nearly a decade of architectural design practice in NY, Detroit, and Philadelphia which informs his sound practice. His debut solo recording under the name sohme will be released on the Spirituals imprint of the Phantom Limb UK label on August 1st.His first single "These Are All My Thoughts" is out June 18th, wherever you get your music.Saumon and I talk about his piece, his process, and his multifaceted practice. We touch on the triumphs and trials of making art in times of personal transition, while raising a family, and in a world that contains so much suffering. Saumon is a true gem and what he brings to this conversation is so generous and generative. After our conversation, we will hear our collaboration, PSO. no. 234 Considering Transitions followed by Saumon's solo piece, If I Had Twelve Minutes (With Birds).Sohme Production: https://www.sohmeproduction.com/Phantom Limb Uk Records: https://www.phantom-limb.co.uk/Porch Swing Orchestra Site: https://porchswingorchestra.org/Porch Swing Orchestra Newsletter: https://porchswingorchestra.substack.com/ Get full access to Porch Swing Orchestra at porchswingorchestra.substack.com/subscribe

Colombian-born, Brooklyn-based, and clearly not here to fill space. Sixty-three minutes of pulsing, precision-engineered techno that moves like a night train, no brakes, no letup. Opening track? Sciama's Intercede on OODA. It sets the tone, and the pressure just builds from there. This isn't some throwaway club hour but a lean, locked-in, and fully dialed mix. No fluff. No filler. Just groove and grit. Transitions snap like circuit breakers, clean, sudden, right on cue. Korbeat co-runs Bajo Constructo out of Armenia, Quindío in Colombia, and was a resident of Seis Records. Lately, he's been surfacing on compilations from QEONE and Aneelhi Rec, steadily staking ground in Brooklyn's underground. File under: fuel. Today, I am pleased to welcome Bob Weinhold, Partner at Velocity Advisory Group, an advisory firm helping clients accelerate organizational success through leadership development, executive coaching, cultural alignment, and strategic execution. Bob oversees the firm's Family Business Advisory and Executive Coaching practices. He began his career in healthcare working with executives in 1996 and later that year was fortunate to support the Atlanta Olympic Games with his individual and team performance enhancement experience. Bob supports the development of next generation leaders to prepare for succession and help senior family members transition responsibilities while mitigating risk. In his work with families, Bob talks about the concept of “mental scripts” that family members have in their heads that, while helpful in some cases, can also get in the way of successful transitions, communications, and relationships within family enterprises. He elaborates on this concept and gives some examples of how these mental scripts form and manifest themselves within families of wealth. One common challenge related to the “mental scripts” topic is the “fear of screwing up” mentality that so often guides and derails progress among enterprise families and their members. Bob explains why this “Don't Mess It Up!” attitude is so pervasive both among older generations looking to transition control and their next-gen descendants who are looking to step into leadership. He also offers some insights into what families can do to avoid or navigate this common pitfall. One practical tip Bob offers is for family members to really mind their language – to study the phrases they use in their conversations. Bob delves into why language is so important and unpacks what family leaders and members can do to make sure how they speak to each other helps them grow and succeed rather than derail or hold them back. Another practical tool Bob uses and recommends is “the list”, which often older generations have in their mind before they can be comfortable transitioning power and control. He talks about this mental list – what's often on it, how to deal with it, and how rising-gen members can manage toward and around this list. Enjoy this instructive conversation with a prominent and experienced thought leader and practitioner in the field of intergenerational transitions and succession within UHNW families.

Whole-person health starts with whole-family care—and that begins with a provider who sees you, hears you, and truly walks beside you. Dr. Marion Pierson brings decades of heart-led pediatric experience to the conversation, showing how health is more than check-ups and prescriptions—it's about relationships, rest, and raising kids in rhythm with both structure and freedom. Her passion for serving her Kansas City community is palpable, and her insight into direct primary care reminds us that when families are empowered with knowledge, time, and trust, they don't just survive—they thrive. Key Takeaways: Community-based care thrives when families feel seen, supported, and invited into the healthcare process. Simple habits like sleep, hydration, and nutrition can dramatically shift a child's mood, focus, and overall well-being. Transitions, like summer break, can be both freeing and disruptive—maintaining flexible routines helps children stay grounded. Parents' self-care directly impacts how children experience structure, safety, and emotional regulation. The right healthcare fit is like a good relationship—it's built on trust, time, and open communication.   Resource Mentioned: Sherrie Ortiz is the owner of Just One Day Travel Tours and a passionate advocate for creating memorable experiences through local travel as KC travel guide.
