This week I am pleased to share a conversation with the Philadelphia-based, sound artist and sound designer, musician, field recordist, architectural designer, Saumon Oboudiyat. Saumon collaborated with PSO to create a sprawling intricate synth soundscape to a particularly vibrant dawn chorus of birds recorded from the porch at PSO HQ in Austin to create PSO no.234 Considering Transitions, but before we get into that, let me explain what PSO is.Porch Swing Orchestra is an art project that explores the relationship between sound and images. Most images are taken on the site where the sound was created and/or recorded. Our orchestra is comprised of birds, guitars, artists, poets, and passing cars that spontaneously create ephemeral symphonic chance-inspired compositions. The original site and hub for all things PSO can be found at porchswingorchestra.org.Saumon Oboudiyat is the founder of sohme production which is the moniker under which Oboudiyat conducts his sound practice. His practice includes, but is not limited to, music production, film scoring, & traditional and EMF recordings. sohme's work integrates analog & digital synthesis, acoustic instrument performance, and field recordings capturing the built and natural environments. He weaves these practices into experimental, textured, cinematic, and immersive compositions. Saumon is also one half of the singer-songwriter duo, MVSO. His debut solo album as sohme will be released under UK based Phantom Limb's Spirituals imprint on August 15th. He holds a M Arch from the University of Michigan and a BS Arch from Temple University, with nearly a decade of architectural design practice in NY, Detroit, and Philadelphia which informs his sound practice. His debut solo recording under the name sohme will be released on the Spirituals imprint of the Phantom Limb UK label on August 1st.His first single "These Are All My Thoughts" is out June 18th, wherever you get your music.Saumon and I talk about his piece, his process, and his multifaceted practice. We touch on the triumphs and trials of making art in times of personal transition, while raising a family, and in a world that contains so much suffering. Saumon is a true gem and what he brings to this conversation is so generous and generative. After our conversation, we will hear our collaboration, PSO. no. 234 Considering Transitions followed by Saumon's solo piece, If I Had Twelve Minutes (With Birds).Sohme Production: https://www.sohmeproduction.com/Phantom Limb Uk Records: https://www.phantom-limb.co.uk/Porch Swing Orchestra Site: https://porchswingorchestra.org/Porch Swing Orchestra Newsletter: https://porchswingorchestra.substack.com/ Get full access to Porch Swing Orchestra at porchswingorchestra.substack.com/subscribe

Are we paying attention to how we think and make mental transitions? And are our teams at the mercy of our mindsets? Do we, as leaders, have expectations of our teams that stem from strength or weaknesses in our ability to transition mentally? This episode explores times of war, peace, and personal stress as initial examples of ways that we can pay attention to our thinking. Do our teams understand how we think and approach things? Are there any current misunderstandings due to miscommunications that track back to how we think?Leaders have strong influence on the team's operations. Knowing how we transition mentally, and maybe learning how our team members transition mentally, can help with more clear communication. Please, take the next 5-10 business days and be mindful. Pay attention to thoughts and mental transitions.

We took a minute. Summer break, slow mode, call it what you want. We're back. Still cruising at 33, but this one hits like it's cut at 45. Korbeat steps in with a mix that doesn't waste a second. Colombian-born, Brooklyn-based, and clearly not here to fill space. Sixty-three minutes of pulsing, precision-engineered techno that moves like a night train, no brakes, no letup. Opening track? Sciama's Intercede on OODA. It sets the tone, and the pressure just builds from there. This isn't some throwaway club hour but a lean, locked-in, and fully dialed mix. No fluff. No filler. Just groove and grit. Transitions snap like circuit breakers, clean, sudden, right on cue. Korbeat co-runs Bajo Constructo out of Armenia, Quindío in Colombia, and was a resident of Seis Records. Lately, he's been surfacing on compilations from QEONE and Aneelhi Rec, steadily staking ground in Brooklyn's underground. File under: fuel. Haftu Strintzos spent the first years of his life as a shepherd in mountainous Tigray in northern Ethiopia. He cared for sheep and cows and played hopscotch (the Tigrayan version) with the other shepherds. Now an Asics-sponsored athlete, with his sights on representing Australia in the marathon, Haftu has the most incredible story brimming with resilience and perspective. But to understand how he got from A to B, you'll just have to listen to this episode. Haftu talks about some defining moments of his athletic career so far, including running for Villanova University in the US, finishing first Australian across the line at the World Athletics Cross Country Championships in Serbia, winning the 10,000m at the 2024 Oceania Athletics Championships and achieving silver in the 5,000m. After his half marathon debut in Melbourne last year (62:24), Haftu followed up with a blinder in Marugame in Japan, where he ran 60:36 and asserted himself as a real contender on the roads. Unfortunately, Haftu's marathon debut was foiled by an injury that popped up just before Hamburg Marathon earlier this year. We discuss how he's dealing with that injury setback, how training has changed since he transitioned to Adam Didyk's Team Tempo and what Haftu's big goals for the future look like. -- Follow us on Instagram: @haftustrintz @runwithit.pod @elisebeacom -- Intro/outro music by Dan Beacom Graphic design by Kate Scheer

One of the things that I am starting to notice more and more is the difference between “getting older” and “feeling older.” Getting older is something that is unavoidable as long as we're alive. But I find feeling older comes in waves. I am finding that seeing another child graduate high school is another moment in which I am impacted by feeling older. My daughter Hailey has reached the end of her high school years, which is more bittersweet than my first daughter. This is because Hailey was born with particular challenges that made every year uncertain. The NICU doctor told us “to enjoy the time you have with her.” Turns out that we are 18 years and counting. With her challenges, college is not an option. But given that we live in a state with good services, she moves onto something called Transitions, which is a program from 18-22 to help develop life skills, job skills, and job placement. As with any graduate, it is an exciting time and a scary time not knowing how her story will unfold. Then again, Hailey's story has always been filled with a lot of uncertainties, also like any of ours. Every step along the way, she has authored a version of herself that is authentically and uniquely her. As much as we would all like to say the same, I really don't know how many of us can. The freedom of self expression through which one can shine their own light can be a proposition much scarier than what might happen after graduation. The story of your life that you are going to write and tell is in large part up to you. Ideally, I think, we would like our story to be written in our voice because it is one that we are writing for ourselves. This isn't always possible given that our stories are invariably impacted by any number of factors beyond our control. To be able to tell our stories on our terms is a gift. My guest on Experience by Design knows all about telling stories, and also about the importance of marking time. Michael Drew has spent a career helping people get their stories to a wider audience. A key point that he shares is that we need to find ways of connecting our authentic voice and passion to a broader audience. Michael sees his work as part of a larger purpose, which is being here in service to other people. This process involves building relationships, translating brilliance into actionable insights, and framing ideas in ways that speak to the needs of your audience. Michael has represented many many best selling authors, so he definitely knows about which he speaks. We also talk about his other work on the forty-year cycle of history, which is a fascinating topic to explore. It turns out that everything old is in fact new again. These cycles move from “Me” to “We” extremes, which reflects the larger social zeitgeist. Understanding this cycle can explain much of the moments we find ourselves in, and what it means for us individually and as a society. Was a fascinating chat that ranged across many different areas, but all tied together by a focus on telling our story, understanding the broader moment we are in, living to our purpose through service, and crafting a brand that you can believe in.And congrats again to Hailey who lives the most authentically of any one I know, and continues to write her own story.Michael Drew LinkedIn https://www.linkedin.com/in/michaelrdrewBook Retreat Publishing Services https://bookretreat.com/“Pendulum: How Past Generations Shape Our Present and Predict Our Future” https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15842812-pendulum

In this episode of The Timeout, Dwyane Wade, D Wright, Bob, and Chris Johnson get real about the unglamorous side of the game—from sore feet to grooming routines. They joke about aging bodies, beard care, and whether it’s weird for guys to say “good night” on the phone. Chris reframes draft day as the “replacement system,” spotlighting the heartbreak for players leaving the league. The crew celebrates SGA’s MVP win and breaks down why OKC is one of the smartest-built teams in years. They criticize Minnesota’s game plan, call for Ant Edwards to expand his offensive bag, and stress that future titles will take serious work. Wade shares love for Melo’s Hall of Fame shoutout, and Bob declares himself a new Florida Panthers fan. Music Credit: Khari Mateen. Most people stay stuck because they're waiting for clarity.Big mistake. When you're 15–20 years into your career, the destination will never be what you imagined anyway. What's really keeping you stuck isn't a lack of direction. It's fear.Fear disguised as “being strategic.”Fear disguised as “waiting for the right moment.”Fear disguised as “needing more information.”But here's the thing:You don't overcome fear by thinking your way through it.You overcome it by moving through it.The path doesn't appear before you move.It reveals itself because you moved.Start small: One conversation.
