Brad Beaulieu and Jaym Gates join us from the GenCon Indy Writing Symposium to talk about good versus evil, and how your character might swing between the two. And it's all about that swing. Moral grey areas are more interesting if we move through them. We talk about how we swing the pendulum, what difficulties we encounter, and what sorts of things we want to have happen to our reader when it moves.

From intimate duels to the death to epic battles, the fight scene is a cornerstone of speculative fiction. For the writer, however, crafting a good fight scene can be an epic struggle to find the right blend of pacing and action. So my co-host K. T. Bryski and I went on a quest to find the answer to this one question: What is the key to writing a good fight scene? To ensure we covered all the bases, we asked that question to seven remarkable storytellers: Seth Skorkowsky, Cat Rambo, David Annandale, Andrea Phillips, Brad Beaulieu, Gail Carriger, and David Nickle. The result is an inspiring exploration into the nuances and subtleties of recounting the physical struggles of our characters. Brad Beaulieu - author of lush and richly-rendered epic fantasy tales and co-host of the fabulous Speculate podcast - returns to the Big Chair at the Roundtable to workshop a tale of nerds transported into a an epic fantasy world. The story is conjured from the imagination of creagous Guest Writer, John McCarthy (Surfside Jack to his friends), a coming of age tale of thwarted destinies, grim nemeses, and the fate of worlds hanging in the balance. Moses Siregar joins me as co-host and together we delve into the tale, exploring everything from genre to character arc, worldbuilding to romance. It's a classic brainstorming froth that culminates in a trove of Literary Gold for all.

The MacGuffin is often a maligned element of storytelling. Most of the time, when you hear it mentioned, you are meant to tread carefully, if not avoid the trope. However, at ConFusion 2014, Ben asked a few authors how you can use a MacGuffin well. These are the responses from Brad Beaulieu, Howard Tayler, John Scalzi, Laura Resnick, Michael R. Underwood, Myke Cole and Peter V. Brett. Of course, what would be a One Question episode without Dave Robison?
