Guest: Pamela James, CEO & Founder of Paloma St. JamesIt's no mystery that industrialization has a negative impact on the environment; however, an unexpected contributor is the fashion industry. Recent studies have shown that the production of textiles contributes nearly to 8-10% of global carbon emissions, superseding emissions from the aviation and shipping industries combined. Designer and CEO, Pamela James, joins us today to discuss her take on sustainable fashion and the concept of modularity. We're a society of mass production and overconsumption, but today you'll see that less really is more. These storms have a 50% chance of developing in the Dallas area, bringing hail and damaging winds as their greatest threats. The threat of a tornado will be low but not zero. In other news, A deal on a sweeping plan to pump $8.5 billion to Texas public schools has been struck. A compromise between the Texas House and Senate will maintain the lower $55 per-student increase to the basic allotment but adds an additional $500 million for fixed costs to the plan; Dallas officials do not have a price tag for the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center, and they won't have one until next year; Fairview residents have filed an appeal challenging the Town Council's approval of a permit allowing the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to build a temple in their town. I'm so deeply grateful to all of you for your one-pointed attention on devotional service. You're using your lives, starting with the most important part—the beginning—and getting established deeply in sādhana that will carry you through your whole life. All auspiciousness comes from chanting strictly every day, and all nonsense subsides from your life. Nonsense leads to great suffering, confusion, and so forth. So dry up the whole sea of nonsense that's there in your mind by the powerful winds of the holy name. Keep chanting throughout the day as much as possible and keep reading Prabhupāda's books. Follow the four regulative principles, because going off the guard rails, over the guard rails, means that you've got to climb back out again with injuries. So stay safe. Wear your safety belt. The oceans are losing their memory. That could make it harder to forecast everything from monsoons to blizzards.Ocean “memory” is maintained in the top layer, called the mixed layer. Winds push warm surface water downward, where it mixes with water at greater depths. This layer is typically about 150 feet thick. And overall, it maintains a fairly constant temperature. When the temperature changes as the result of some major event, it can take 10 to 20 years for the change to dissipate. In other words, the ocean maintains the “memory” of what happened to it for that long.As the air warms up, though, ocean memory may be changing. Researchers recently simulated changing ocean conditions with computer models. Their work suggested the memory span may be getting shorter, mainly because water at the surface is getting warmer and less dense, so it doesn't sink as easily. As a result, the mixed layer gets thinner, so its temperature can change more quickly. The quicker the change, the shorter the memory. As one researcher described it, the ocean develops amnesia.Ocean memory is an important factor in forecasting conditions in both the oceans and the atmosphere. Scientists use it to predict monsoon seasons, heatwaves, exceptionally wet summers and cold winters, and other major climate events. A shorter ocean memory could cut months from the lead time of these forecasts—making it harder to remember whether to take an umbrella or sunscreen on your next outing.

FAN MAIL--We would love YOUR feedback--Send us a Text MessageWhat can the pivotal moments of World War II teach us about our rapidly changing world today? Drawing from Victor Davis Hanson's masterful work "The Second World Wars," we explore how three unexpected events in 1941 transformed separate regional conflicts into a global catastrophe—and why similar world-altering shifts might be happening right now.As we recently marked the 80th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, this episode examines why remembering this history matters more than ever. VE Day represents not just military triumph, but the defense of democracy and freedom against tyranny. For those seeking deeper understanding, we recommend Herman Wouk's epic novels "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance," along with the landmark documentary series "The World at War"—works that capture both the sweeping historical events and deeply personal experiences of this transformative period.Hanson's analysis reveals how technological shifts rapidly altered the course of the war, with aircraft carriers rendering battleships obsolete almost overnight. This serves as a powerful parallel to our current moment, as we face potentially world-changing developments: unprecedented political shifts in America, the election of the first American-born Pope, and an AI revolution that may require new ethical frameworks similar to how Pope Leo XIII addressed industrialization with Rerum Novarum in 1891. Are the winds of change gathering force again? This episode challenges us to learn from history's patterns so we can better navigate our increasingly uncertain future.Key Points from the Episode:• VE Day (May 8, 1945) marked Nazi Germany's defeat and remains relevant as a reminder of war's costs and democracy's value• Herman Wouk's "The Winds of War" and "War and Remembrance" provide immersive understanding of WWII through personal stories and historical context• "The World at War" documentary remains the gold standard for understanding the conflict through powerful storytelling and rare footage• World War II demonstrates how quickly technological shifts can occur - battleships became obsolete as aircraft carriers dominated naval warfare• Today's potential pivotal shifts include unprecedented US political changes, the first American-born Pope, and the AI revolution• Historical patterns suggest we may be witnessing another period of rapid transformation similar to the world-altering events of 1941Remember history so we are not blinded by those who misinterpret it, and honor the sacrifices made during World War II.Other resources: MM#231--American MasterpieceMM#234--RememberMM#257--Land Ho, The digital revolution is hereWorld at war documentary (watch the first 5 minutes)Want to leave a review? The episode brings two distinct but interconnected perspectives on the green transition: harnessing the immense power of our oceans and transforming established energy giants from within. Get ready for insights into offshore wind development and the complex journey of greening a legacy fossil fuel company. The NatureBacked podcast, direct from the vibrant atmosphere of Impact Day 2024, was hosted by Fiona Alston, who dives deep into the critical shifts shaping our energy landscape. First, Fiona speaks with Charles Ogilvie, Executive Director of Ocean Energy Pathway. Charles sheds light on the burgeoning world of offshore wind energy, explaining why the seas offer superior wind quality allowing for colossal turbines, and how his organization helps governments worldwide build sustainable offshore wind sectors. He addresses the crucial environmental balance, discussing how, counterintuitively, well-managed wind farms can potentially aid marine ecosystem recovery in previously degraded areas, alongside their primary role in climate change mitigation.   Next, the conversation shifts to the intricate challenge of industrial transformation with Kristjan Kuhi, Management Board Member at Eesti Energia. Kristjan candidly discusses the journey of an 85-year-old company, historically reliant on Estonia's oil shale, as it pivots towards renewables like wind and solar, explores grid solutions like batteries and hydrogen, and even seeks circular economy applications for its legacy infrastructure. He highlights the internal and external drivers for this capital-intensive change and the forward-thinking required in R&D. Recorded live (and featuring a brief, real-time electrical hiccup!), this episode offers compelling insights from the front lines of the energy transition. Tune in to explore the vast potential unlocked by tapping into ocean winds and the pragmatic realities of steering a traditional energy player towards a sustainable future, understanding what needs to be built anew and what must be fundamentally transformed. The gusty winds of spring make it a good season for flying a kite. But you might not want to try it on the planet Wasp-127 b – it would be hard to hang on. Winds high above the surface blow at an astounding 20,000 miles per hour – a hundred times faster than winds in the strongest category five hurricanes on Earth. The star – Wasp-127 – is a lot like the Sun. But the planet isn’t much like any planet in the solar system. It’s much wider than Jupiter, the largest planet. But it’s only one-sixth of Jupiter’s mass. That makes it one of the “puffiest” planets yet seen. Wasp-127 b was discovered because it passes in front of its parent star every four days. As it does so, starlight filters through the atmosphere. Astronomers use that effect to learn something about the atmosphere. Recent observations revealed that material in the upper atmosphere is moving extremely fast – blown by the fastest winds yet seen on any planet. The observations also suggested that there’s a big temperature difference between the dawn and evening skies – more than 300 degrees Fahrenheit – one more reason the planet isn’t a good place to fly a kite. The Wasp-127 system is in the constellation Sextans, the sextant. This evening, it’s well to the lower right of the Moon. But the system is more than 500 light-years away, so the star is too faint to see without a telescope. Script by Damond Benningfield
