To date, Trump 2.0 has been defined by everybody appearing to be on the same page and by a sense that the administration kept moving its priorities forward. You might not have liked what those priorities were, but the priorities did get done. The one big beautiful bill was described as an administration's worth of priorities getting done too soon, and it seems like that might have been prophetic. Trump 1.0 returns when internal fights spill into public view, aides leak against one another, major spectacles vanish with nothing much changing, and the president treats factional drama as fuel rather than a problem to solve.Go back to the beginning of 2025, when Trump 2.0 very much was aligned. The coalition was locked in. The administration had momentum. USAID dismantled in a split second. The one big beautiful bill pushed over the finish line in record time. Again, the point isn't that these were good things that happened. It's that they kept happening. But no momentum is made to last forever. Maybe the coalition was always doomed to splinter. The cracks began to show as people were fired, as Kristi Noem and Pam Bondi went down for various different ICE shootings and Epstein, accelerating distrust and leaving Dan Bongino back on the radio airwaves. Either way, the drama that Trump 2.0 kept outside the tent has now fully moved back within it.How do we know? Because they're telling us.Politics Politics Politics is a reader-supported publication. We knew officials were fighting over how much information the president should share when he was speaking to America. Acting DNI Bill Pulte pushed for a more aggressive version, but senior White House aides intervened. Separate reports said the speech might have claimed that Georgia's two Democratic senators were elected illegitimately because they both came in during the 2020 runoff. The final address didn't go that far, meaning somebody pulled something back — or at least that's what the reports would lead us to believe, which means somebody inside the administration is telling a reporter. The 24-minute speech eventually focused more on election interference and intelligence findings as a way to get to the idea that the Save America Act should be passed. But even that's telling, because the speech was quickly swallowed by the news cycle. That's another hallmark of Trump 1.0: a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing, or at least nothing that's remembered more than 48 hours later.The biggest Trump 1.0 tell is Iran. From the very beginning, the administration has said the Iran strategy has two hands. Marco Rubio and Pete Hegseth are the closed fist, the violence that will come down on the regime, while J.D. Vance, Jared Kushner, and Steve Witkoff are the open hand of diplomacy. If you want to make a deal on our terms, we're always welcome. In the meantime, we'll punch you in the face. Trump has actively encouraged a rivalry between Vance and Rubio, asking people all the time who they think should be the next president. And now the proxies of both men are in out-and-out war online.Alex Bruesewitz is on the J.D. Vance side, making it a priority to talk about how much foreign influence, including Israel, is affecting the discourse. Meanwhile, Israel hawks, including Mark Levin and Ben Shapiro, are attacking Vance, saying he's surrendering to Qatar and he's mostly a socialist. The damage is falling most heavily on Vance because he's become the face of diplomacy. If the memorandum of understanding had worked, he would've gotten the credit. Since there's now a lot of violence happening in that region again, he gets the blame. Instead of all of this being part of one big rolling ball that is the Trump administration, we now have winners and losers, which means people inside that sphere are playing the game. Very Trump 1.0.The reason this happens in both instances is, well, Big Chungus. Trump 2.0's advantage was that the drama stayed outside the tent and the team inside was united. Now we're getting a clearer view of exactly what the war behind closed doors looks like, and in my opinion, it goes hand in hand with priorities not being enacted. You hear a lot about the Save America Act, but it's stalled and doesn't have the votes to become law. Iran is different because the consequences are immediate. Trump has to show that either pressure or diplomacy can produce a successful end state. If neither path works, he'll have made a very big bet without a clear conclusion, and he'll have to define a win for himself even if it's not very clear to the American people. Chris van Voorst van Beest is an American bassist and composer who grew up in Maine and lives in Brooklyn, NY. Hailed as "a double bassist with an exceptional ability to improvise," (Erminio Garotta - Sound & Vision) Chris has been fortunate to have performed and/or recorded with artists as diverse as Frank Kimbrough, Robert Glasper, Gabriel Kahane, and Joe Lovano. Known for his big sound and lyrical bass lines, Chris has emerged as a unique voice within New York's jazz and improvised music community, playing as a sideman in a variety of ensembles, leading his own trio, and writing original music; most recently releasing his debut record as a leader "Bye Design" (Adhyaropa Records). Also a frequent multi-genre collaborator, Chris has composed and performed incidental music for dance (Nest, w/ choreographer Kelly Ashton Todd), chamber music for a book (The Lamplighter), and is currently co-producing a record of Americana songs, to be released in early 2025.As a writer, Chris is as much informed by a deep love of classical composers as he is by his heroes of jazz and popular music. Writing music for both improvisation and 'classical' settings, a listener can hear the influences spill into one another, evident in his most recent work Quintet for Winds (see Chamber Music page), which draws as much inspiration from the lush harmonies of Duke Ellington as it does the lively rhythms of Darius Milhaud. In 2017, Chris created his own chamber project Miniatures and Improvisations, putting together concerts that featured a broad program of short pieces for chamber trio, each work immediately followed by the musical response of an improvising trio, exploring the dialogue between the written and the unknown. She's a neuroscientist, the executive director of Knight Hennessy Scholars, and the author of 18 books. Her TED Talk on luck has been viewed over 3.4 million times. Her newest book is called What I Wish I Knew About Luck: A Crash Course on Turning Aspirations into Achievements. Key Learnings Tina's dad died at 99 and a half. Three weeks before his first great-grandbaby was born. He was still driving, going to three dinner parties a week, and talking to Tina every day. His curiosity was his superpower. He gave 66 lectures in his retirement community over 20 years, on topics ranging from nuclear weapons to climate change. Train yourself to be a professional noticer. When Tina's dad walked his grandkids into a new room, he'd give them a minute, then say "Shut your eyes." How many doors? Windows? What color is the carpet? Assume there's a million dollars in every room. It's up to you to find it. Opportunities are ubiquitous. You just have to look. Take the headphones off. The most powerful things happen when you engage with strangers. Standing in line. On the plane. Walking through campus. Tina sat next to a stranger named Mark on a plane. He was a publisher. He said no to her book proposal. She kept the relationship going. Years later, his editor approved the same proposal she had given Mark. Within two weeks, she had a contract. Wear something that invites conversation. A logo. A backpack from a conference. A college baseball shirt. Give the world a hook to start with you. Fortune is what happens to you. Luck requires action. Most people confuse the two and miss the chance to claim their agency. "With my luck, it's gonna rain." Reframe it: "With OUR luck, it's gonna be a beautiful sunny day." The reframe changes what you see.  Luck seldom sails solo. Most luck comes through other people. Cultivating meaningful relationships is the most underrated lucky behavior. You don't get a job. You get the keys to the building. The visible work isn't what gets you ahead. The invisible work is. Between stimulus and response is a choice. (Viktor Frankl) Within the constraints of fortune, agency is everything. "Tina, you think like a scientist." One sentence from a professor changed Tina's life. Leaders, know the weight of your words. Twenty years later, Tina wrote that professor a thank-you note. Twenty years after that, his granddaughter wrote back. They had read part of Tina's letter at his funeral. When a student made a bad decision, Tina's first instinct was to punish. She paused. Said, "Help me understand what happened." The whole community learned what empathy and humility look like in leadership. Unresolved conflict sucks the energy out of your day. Resolve it. You become taller, lighter, more open to lucky things. Oliver Greenwald sent Tina a list of 10 ways he could help her with her book. Nothing on the list was exactly what she wanted. She hired him anyway, because of the initiative. Build the sail to catch the wind. Build the ship. Your internal work. Values. Story. Goals. Recruit the crew. The people in your world. Hoist the sail. What you do every single day. Your core values are the keel of your ship. Without them, the first strong wind capsizes you. Keep a failure resume. Document what didn't work and what you'll do differently. Don't perseverate. Move on. "It's all good in the end. If it's not good, it's not the end." We're always in the middle of the story. Tina sends thank-you notes every single day. Five or ten minutes. Three or four sentences. Closes the loop. Builds the relationship. Don't end the dinner without making the next date. Most people drop the ball. Get it on the calendar before you leave. The instant you think something positive about someone, tell them. Be specific. Text. Email. Call. The instant. Tina's champagne moment: her newborn granddaughter at one year old. She just learned to turn over and looks so proud of herself. Reflection Questions What's on your failure resume right now that you haven't yet extracted the lesson from?
