As a divorced mom, I raised three sons, and for my two youngest, I was doing it completely without their father. I remember the weight of that and the realization that I wasn't "daddy" and I couldn't be, because nature just wasn't designed that way. But I learned a secret while struggling to come up with effective ways to get out of survival mode. Mothering solo doesn't mean parenting alone. I began co-parenting with God, relying on Him to fill the gaps that felt too wide for me to bridge. The strategy started with a hard truth we have to help our sons grasp: God is nothing like men. If an earthly father was absent or unloving, a boy's view of "Father God" is often fractured. We have to reframe that character through our own leadership and by diving into the Word to show them a Father who never leaves. But it doesn't stop with us. I remember when my youngest was 13 and terrified of the calling on his life. I prayed for a mentor, and God provided a youth pastor who was also a court attorney. He was a man of stability and integrity who stayed. Twenty years later, they are still friends. That mentorship didn't just give my son a role model; it gave him a blueprint for manhood.I've always prioritized conversation and community. People used to stop me on the train and ask, "Is that your son? You two talk like you're friends." I took pride in that because I knew I had to be the sum of his influences. Yet, as Jim Rohn famously said, “we are the average of the five people we spend the most time with.” With that in mind, being mindful of the company your sons keep is crucial int keeping him focused on what's important in life. I had to oversee his "circle of five," ensuring he was surrounded by godly peers. Note: The only reason I created a Facebook account was to oversee my son's action on social media. I was terrified that they would connect with unsafe people online. But I needn't worry and I realized I didn't need to keep on eye on them all the time. I encourage you also, to add another layer to your leadership when daddy is absent. Encourage your son to read about biblical role models like David, who was far from perfect but was humble. He recognized when he messed up and embraced God to help him escape trouble. Also, Joseph, who modeled integrity despite the many difficulties her suffered. Finally by building consistent spiritual habits—reading the Word and praying together—our sons can move from fearing their future to embracing their calling. We don't have to live continuously in survival mode. We can help our sons shake the legacy of absence and raise men who will stand strong for generations. While the heart of our mission is spiritual, we must also use the right tools to ensure this message reaches every mother searching for a lifeline. If the idea of God as your Father intrigue you, I encourage you to check out Day 12: God, Our Father in Courage to Believe 21 Day Christian Devotional for Single Moms. What “Take Captive Every Thought” Means“Taking every thought captive” refers to actively gaining control over your mind rather than letting thoughts run unchecked. It involves: Identifying and challenging thoughts, ideas, or arguments that oppose God's truth or knowledge of Him (such as lies, doubts, temptations, fears, or worldly philosophies). Submitting those thoughts to Christ's authority—evaluating them against Scripture and aligning them with obedience to Jesus. Listen in so we can take a deep dive and provide some helpful thoughts.
Submit. Possibly the hardest word in the English language. We've all watched authority go bad – the boss, the coach, the leader who let us down. So this isn't a sermon about politics. It's about a deeper question: How do I live in a world I didn't design, under leaders I didn't choose, next to neighbors I didn't pick?Romans 13 doesn't fix the crisis of authority by giving us a perfect leader – there isn't one. It fixes it by lifting our eyes to the one Authority who used His power not to take, but to die. We'll talk about honoring people we didn't vote for, learning our neighbors' names, and staying awake to the King who's coming.Tune into this week's message titled, “Honor. Love. Have you ever had one of those moments where you realize you've been carrying something you were never meant to carry?Maybe it's trying to hold your life together. Maybe it's trying to fix yourself. Maybe it's the pressure of proving your worth, securing your future, or becoming the person you think you should be.The truth is, most of us spend a lot of time trusting ourselves to do what only God can do.This Sunday, we continued our series “A New Humanity” in Romans 11. Paul tackles a difficult question: What happens when people reject God's way? Is mercy exhausted? Is the story over? His answer is surprisingly hopeful.Romans 11 reminds us that mercy isn't God's backup plan. It IS the plan. While we often double down on self-reliance, God continues to pursue people with patience, grace, and an invitation to come back home.If you've ever wrestled with disappointment, control, self-sufficiency, or wondered whether God's grace really applies to you, this message will encourage you.Tune into this week's message called, “Mercy Is The Master Plan”!Join us for service online or in person every Sunday at 8am, 9:30am, 11:15am, & 5pm (C&V Service).Connect to Captivate! - https://shorturl.at/nKxQuDownload the Captivate App to Stay Connected! - https://shorturl.at/5PfXPIf you want to share how God is moving in your life through this ministry, please let us know at info@captivatesd.com!Decided To Follow Jesus? Episode Summary:In this powerful and deeply personal episode, I tackle the profound weight of financial uncertainty and the fear that so often grips single mothers. When every day brings a new blow to your bank account, how do you stretch a single income? Before offering quick, micro-solutions, we dive into the macro-spiritual battle against anxiety. This episode answers the question many solo mothers ask:"How can I stretch a single income to cover rising food and housing costs?"I've tried to answer this question 2 ways:1) By sharing my own personal journey as it relates to Fear: Leaning to Trust, which is Day 1 in the devotional; and2) Providing micro tips and strategies to stretch your budget and create additional (or some) means of income.Sharing my own raw, lived experience from the height of the 2007 financial crisis, I recount how I packed my two youngest sons into a Toyota Camry and drove 900 miles from Atlanta to New York City for a job guaranteed for only two weeks. Through obedience, sudden shifts, and total reliance on God, that temporary job unlocked 17 months of provision and set up a 14-year career. If you are a solo mom feeling overwhelmed, scared, or isolated, this episode is a reminder that God sees you, holds your hand, and promises to uphold you. Tune in for spiritual grounding, followed by practical steps to shifting from survival mode to absolute transformation.Key Takeaways & Reflection Questions:The Grip of Financial Fear: Financial pressure breeds fear of the present and the future, often driving us to make desperate, impulsive decisions we later regret. The Anatomy of a Faith Leap: True trust means following God's leading even when the plan changes unexpectedly, or when others think your choices are crazy.God is a Consistent Provider: God doesn't just hand you a breakthrough and leave you to fend for yourself; He protects, stays with you, and handles the long-term aftermath.Actionable Self-Reflection: Grab a notebook and map out: What exactly am I fearful of losing? Is it shelter, a job, or control? Pinpointing the root helps you hand it over cleanly.Scripture MentionedIsaiah 41:10 (NKJV): > "Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and I will help you, I will uphold you with My righteous right hand."Resources & Links Mentioned in this Episode:Read the Devotional: This episode expands on Day 1 (Fear) of the Courage to Believe: 21-Day Christian Devotional for Single Moms. This Sunday we jumped back into our series in Romans with chapter 9. This is the chapter that has ended more friendships than any other passage in Scripture. Pastors skip it. Scholars fight over it. And this Sunday, we went straight in, why? Because the Holy Spirit included it for a reason. We're going to wrestle with a question that's bigger than any theology debate, one that confronts us every single day: Does God actually get to be God? Not God as a concept we manage, not God as a consultant we call when things get rough, but God as God. Sovereign. Mysterious. Trustworthy. This passage is going to stretch us, challenge us, and honestly — if we let it — it's going to set us free. In this thought‑provoking episode of the Authority On Demand Podcast (formerly Authors On Mission Podcast), host Danielle Hutchinson sits down with Daniel Grace, author of In the Wake of Golgotha. Grace reframes the crucifixion story by exploring its “collateral damage,” giving Judas and Pilate a second look as complex enablers rather than one‑dimensional villains.Set in modern‑day New York City, the novel follows reincarnated characters Jude Issachar (Judas, burdened by guilt) and Peter Pfeiffer (Pilate, cursed with ignorance) as they grapple with redemption, fate, and violence. Grace also shares how his Tuscan winery inspired his next project, Territorium, a dark tale of buried secrets in ancient vineyards.✨ Key TakeawaysThe premise of In the Wake of Golgotha: collateral damage of the crucifixionReimagining Judas and Pilate as enablers, not just betrayersSparse historical records as a “blank canvas” for storytellingModern reincarnation in NYC: guilt, ignorance, and redemptionThemes of faith, fate, addiction, and state violenceHow winemaking and history inspire Grace's upcoming novel Territorium✨ Whether you're a reader fascinated by fresh takes on history, a lover of dark, thought‑provoking fiction, or someone intrigued by the blend of wine and storytelling, this episode offers a bold new perspective.
In this episode pulls a theme from Day 5 of the Courage to Believe Devotional, and our focus is a heavy but deeply necessary one: Grief and Coping with Loss. Most people automatically connect grief with a funeral. We think it only belongs when someone passes away. But as today's interview with Coach Chi illustrates, grief happens profoundly when we lose a relationship through divorce. The brain processes the loss of a mapped-out future the exact same way it processes a physical death. You are mourning a timeline that suddenly no longer exists. Because we build such strong emotional connections, a breakup hits us with a physical, devastating force. And if we don't realize we are grieving, that hidden pain will eventually find a way to show up in other areas of our lives. This episode is for you if you're having trouble coping with the loss of your relationship.Curious about what Day 5 of Courage to Believe 21 Day Christian Devotional for Single Moms covers? This weekend we dove into two of the most memorized, most known, most powerful verses in all the Bible… Romans 12:1-2 tells us to "not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our minds.”Let's be honest… The pattern of this world is pretty chaotic. It's not very hard to find bad news. Because of that it becomes easy as believers to live, not in response to the grace of God, but in reaction to the chaos of the world. When we constantly consume the chaos, we will conform to the chaos. It gets into our minds and soul and affects every part of our life. Yet Jesus, the Prince of Peace, walks into the middle of our chaos and offers relief. He urges us to live in reaction, not to chaos, but his mercy. These verses help us to better understand how what we consume shapes who we become, why chaos is constantly fighting for our attention, what it means to become a “living sacrifice.” Scripture urges us to take chaotic thoughts captive before they take us captive, and how can we allow Jesus to renew our minds and form us into people of peace. Tune into this week's message as we unpack this in a message called, “No Longer Conforming to Chaos.”Join us for service online or in person every Sunday at 8am, 9:30am, 11:15am, & 5pm (C&V Service).Connect to Captivate! - https://shorturl.at/nKxQuDownload the Captivate App to Stay Connected! - https://shorturl.at/5PfXPIf you want to share how God is moving in your life through this ministry, please let us know at info@captivatesd.com!Decided To Follow Jesus? While we are on a break, enjoy this episode from Season 2. Season 3 starts May 19!This week, we take on Apuleius' The Golden Ass, a hilarious surprise from Ted Gioia's Immersive Humanities Course. Written in the mid-300s A.D., this is the very first Latin prose novel, penned by Algerian-born Apuleius. Lucius, our hero, is a young man who meddles in magic, transforms into a donkey, and embarks on wild adventures before returning to human form. We were so captivated that note-taking fell by the wayside, much like with Herodotus' Histories. This rollicking tale, brimming with late-Roman-Empire themes, proved both hilarious and profound.Unlike Aristotle's structured tragedy guidelines (see Week 5's Poetics), The Golden Ass defies unity of action, place, and time, weaving a tapestry of digressions and sub-stories. Lucius' transformation serves as a spine for tales like “I heard…” or “So they told me…,” echoing the nested narratives of The Odyssey and The Aeneid. The standout sub-story is the myth of Cupid and Psyche, the earliest known version, which stunned us as the inspiration for C.S. Lewis' Till We Have Faces. Its late appearance for a myth feels significant, reflecting a decadent, fatigued Roman worldview. Fortune, personified as in Boethius' Consolation of Philosophy, reappears, underscoring this era's preoccupations.Sarah Ruden's translation is a triumph, preserving Apuleius' puns, alliteration, and bawdy humor. This farce, second only to Lysistrata in humor, is delightfully NSFW, with outrageous scenes that shocked even our son Jack. Ruden notes comparisons to modern humorists like Wodehouse or George MacDonald Fraser's Flashman series, and we see parallels to Forrest Gump—Lucius stumbles through events without driving the plot. The book's influence extends to A Confederacy of Dunces, sparking new reading threads for us, exactly why we joined this course.Join us next week as we travel east and read The Arabian Nights.LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!) A Dialogue with Justin Jackson and Alban BrookeJust in Jackson from Transistor.fm is so enthusiastic about Apple's new way to add video to their platform (called HLS). I have felt "Meh" about it since it was announced (I'm worried about using API's instead of using the RSS feed). So I wanted to see if I was missing something that might lead me to feel more like Justin.Later that same week Alban Brook from Buzzsprout reached out and so I combined the interviews to show multiple points of view about Apple's HLS implementation not that more hosts are being approved to connect to Apple via their API.Justin's View is Based On Younger PeopleWhile I have no children Justin has a few and he explained how watching them he sees them move from watching video to switching to audio. So the HLS video in Apple supports this (and it's already available on YouTube music, and Spotify. This explains why Justin would have a viewpoint different than mine.Dialogues are amazing, and you just might learn something. Try one today. They are free!Alban's View on The "Give People What They Want" focus of Apple PodcastsWhen you go to YouTube, they drown you in options as they try to get you to click on anything. With Apple's new video options, when you log into Apple, you primarily see the shows that you've told Apple you want to see. Consequently, it may be a better experience. Kevin Finn on the Buzzcast show compared YouTube and the horrible experience to going to the movies, where everything is overpriced and the floor is sticky. The experience isn't as good.Don't Take on Too MuchIf you're a video creator already, adding your show to YouTube seems like a no brainer, and Alaban and Just both mentioned that when people signed up to be beta testers, many of the people chomping at the bit were already video creators.Justin mentions that much like coloring, you start with three colors and learn how to keep people engaged. Then start adding more colors. With podcasting it may make more sense to start with audio, and then add video. We are in a Wait and See PeriodWe don't actually know if this is going to take off. While we don't expect Apple to topple YouTube, we are interested to see just how many people jump on board. Both companies mentioned the benefits of being an early adopter.Pricing for HLS HostingTransistor offers HLS video on any package of of $49 and higher.Buzzsprout offers 6 hours a month for $30 ($25 if you purchase yearly).Captivate is $19/month with an additional $12 for video.Keep in mind Transistor and Captivate operate on a "As many shows and episodes as you want (but you bill goes up depending on downloads/traffic). Buzzsprout's model is a "per show" fee, but you can have as many downloads as you want. For more information on other hosts as they are added see this article on Podnews. The Bridge Podcast on YouTubeJustin shared the story of The Bridge with Peter Mansbridge a former Candaian broadcaster who has now moved to YouTube who is having great success without amazing Thumbnails and fancy studios.Acquired Charges Millions for SponsorshipThere are always shows that break the mold, and Acquired is one of them. They do limited shows that engage a certain audience (CEOs), and consequently are charging millions for sponsor a season (and are already sold out). They describe their show as, "We (Ben and David) personally invest 100+ hours each to research and produce a ~4 hour "conversational audiobook,” telling a company's complete history and strategy.Spotify's Video Options are BlurryI am always cautious about Spotify. We all know they are not fans of RSS, and they like to make features that only work in Spotify. In a recent article at Podnews, Jame Cridlan explains how uploading a video from your media host into Spotify may lock you into using the media host (where an RSS enables you to redirect the feed). There is talk that Spotify may manually be able to switch your show back to RSS (with consequences). My point is we currently don't know so if you plan on posting video to Spotify, you might setup a free hosting account and uplaod the video there. ( I do that for my "Ask the Podcast Coach" show).Mentioned In the ShowSchool of PodcastingPodcasting in Six WeeksTransistor Media HostingBuzzsprout Media HostingCaptivate Media HostingThe Video Podcast ShowPodcast Marketing Trends ExplainedThe Panel PodcastBuzzcast PodcastLinks Mentioned In This EpisodeVideo podcast host pricing - comparisons from PodnewsBeware Spotify's video lock-in from PodnewsMentioned in this episode:Question of the Month: Favorite Remote Recording ToolSo many podcasters us tools to do remote recording (guests, etc). Did you know that Jesus and moms actually have a lot in common? They both can take scraps of food and make amazing meals. They both tend to use our first and last (and sometimes middle) name when we are in big trouble. And besides other fun things we talked about this Sunday, moms and Jesus both believe in us when we don't even believe in ourselves. We dove into a scripture that shows the heart of a mother that comes straight from Jesus' heart, when he believes in a disciple who had his worst moment. No matter where we go in life, the ups and downs, just like Jesus, a Godly mother will always be there waiting for us to come back to who God made us to be. And for that, they deserved to be honored, big time. We also jumped into how to honor the spiritual moms, leaders, and Jesus in our lives in a way they deserve, in a message called “What Jesus and Mom Have in Common.”Join us for service online or in person every Sunday at 8am, 9:30am, 11:15am, & 5pm (C&V Service).Connect to Captivate! Season 3 starts May 19!Week 39 of Ted Gioia's Immersive Humanities Course takes on nineteenth-century American literature. To my surprise, this became one of the most enjoyable weeks so far. I went in dreading familiar names and old high-school resentments, but came out newly energized. Mark Twain's The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (chapters 1–6) was funny, humane, and immediately engaging. Edgar Allan Poe's The Fall of the House of Usher and “The Raven” used ornate language to heighten unease, while Emily Dickinson's poems felt weightless and startlingly modern. Henry David Thoreau's Walden was quotable and provocative, if ultimately grating, and Herman Melville surprised me most of all: Bartleby, the Scrivener lingered with quiet power, and the opening of Moby-Dick left me eager for more. This week revealed a real shift in voice and sensibility—and changed my mind about American literature. I'm looking forward to going back and reading more, but first we need to move on to Week 40 and Russian Literature!LINKTed Gioia/The Honest Broker's 12-Month Immersive Humanities Course (paywalled!) This episode opens with a major industry shift: Tim Cook's announcement that he is stepping down as CEO of Apple in September 2026. The team discusses the transition plan, the elevation of John Ternus and Johny Srouji, and what this "hardware-first" leadership style might mean for the future of Apple devices and services. The conversation then pivots to the technical rollout of HLS (HTTP Live Streaming) video support on Apple Podcasts. Joined by OG co-hosts Mark Asquith and Danny Brown, the team breaks down how HLS differs from standard video files and open standards. They explain how adaptive bitrate streaming ensures listeners stay connected even on poor data connections and why audio-only creators shouldn't feel pressured to pivot to video. Finally, the group tackles the nuance of accessibility and inclusion in podcasting. They compare listening to an audiobook to reading with your ears, emphasizing that the goal is always to deliver the message to the audience wherever they are. The team shares insights on the power of Apple's new video implementation and how it provides more expansive ways for audiences to engage with content.More Co-hosts!Mark Asquith: Founder of Captivate and original co-host of In & Around Podcasting.Danny Brown: Head of Support and Experience at Captivate and original co-host of In & Around Podcasting.Links to interesting things from this episodeEverything related to the Captivate Video Podcasting Support RolloutPublish Video Podcasts to Apple Podcasts: Captivate Video Support OverviewHelpdesk ArticlesApple HLS Video Podcasts: Help ArticleHow to Connect Apple's HLS Video Podcast Feature to Captivate: Connection GuideApple Podcasts HLS Frequently Asked Questions: HLS FAQHow to Publish Video Episodes via Captivate to Apple Podcasts Using HLS: Publishing GuidePricing for Apple HLS Video Podcasts: Pricing DetailsBlogPublish Video to Apple with Captivate: Blog PostApple Video Podcasting Best Practices: Best Practices GuidePeople & ShowsTim Cook: Apple Executive Chairman (formerly CEO - until Sept).John Ternus: Apple CEO (effective Sept 2026).Johny Srouji: Chief Hardware Officer at Apple.Marco Arment: Creator of Overcast and co-host of ATP.Accidental Tech Podcast (ATP): https://atp.fm/Robb Dunewood: Daily Tech News Network & The Tech JawnAnna DeShawn: Ambie Award winner and founder of The Qube App. https://theqube.app/ (If you are a Black or Brown podcaster submit your show!)Apps & TechnologyHLS (HTTP Live Streaming): Technical standard for video delivery.Apple Podcasts: Support for HLS video in iOS 26.4+.The Qube App: A database for Black and Brown podcasters. https://theqube.app/Captivate Growth Labs: Educational resources for podcasters. https://www.captivate.fm/growth-labsArticles & EpisodesATP 663: Defending the Honor of The Cheesecake Factory: The episode where the ATP team predicted Apple's leadership shift. https://atp.fm/663Why People Who Listen to Podcasts Are Suddenly Feeling Left Out (WSJ): An exploration of the audio-only listener experience in a video-centric market. https://www.wsj.com/lifestyle/podcasts-video-armchair-expert-killer-stories-kristen-bell-0e07d0beThe Audio-to-Video Roadmap: Greg Willits: Luma session deep-dive on transitioning formats. https://luma.com/qiqd3odtThe Audio-to-Video Roadmap: Mignon Fogarty: Luma session focused on strategic video implementation. https://luma.com/y0bbjgbhIn & Around Podcasting is a podcast industry podcast started by Mark Asquith and Danny Brown and now hosted by Elsie Escobar and Rob Walch, continuing its mission as an industry show that belongs to the whole community. If you enjoy the show, we'd love for you to leave us a rating or review on your favourite podcast app! About 2,000 years ago, the global missions movement was launched out of a city called Antioch and led by a guy named Barnabas… or as we like to call him, Barney. Yes, like the purple dinosaur. But this Barney was a faith-filled encourager who helped carry the mission of Jesus to the nations. He believed in people, built the Church, and helped multiply the Gospel. And today, we're still running with that same mission. This Sunday we zoomed out and celebrated how God is moving locally, regionally, and globally through Captivate's missions. But we also zoomed in and saw how each of us can be part of what God is doing.Tune into this week's message as we celebrate, learn, and discover what it means to “Be a Barney!”Join us for service online or in person every Sunday at 8am, 9:30am, 11:15am, & 5pm (C&V Service).Connect to Captivate! Season 3 starts May 19!My son Jack is back as we discuss Paradiso, Jack's favorite part of Dante's Divine Comedy. I absolutely love getting to chat with him again (see a couple of earlier episodes linked below). We talk about why he loves Dante in general, and Paradiso in particular. Highlights include:Dante's bravery (or chutzpah!) in writing his poetry and scholarly works in Italian rather than Latin;Who Dante is for (spoiler--it's for YOU), and why (the title of this episode is a big hint!);How people of different ages see Dante in a different light; Why a map of Heaven is really hard to draw, especially compared to Hell and Purgatory.Jack wrote his thesis on part of the Divine Comedy, and he has a lot of experience in the classroom with Dante, so he brings a lot of his knowledge to expand on what we've been talking about for the last two weeks. This episode forms a kind of trilogy on Crack the Book: two weeks ago we discussed Inferno, and last week my friend Lisa and I covered Purgatorio. It's my hope that these three podcasts will inspire you to pick up your own copy of the Divine Comedy and jump in.Season 3 is coming May 19! In this episode, I take you behind the scenes of a good old fashioned microphone shootout—this time, it's all about wireless lavalier mics! I (quickly) run through a lineup of wireless lavalier microphones including the DJI Mic Mini, Hollyland Lark M2, Rode Wireless Micro, Rode Wireless Go, and Shure Move Mic. Not only do I compare how they sound right out of the box, but I also show how a little post production can level the playing field between even budget and premium options. If you've ever wondered whether it matters which one you pick, you'll definitely want to listen. This content may contain affiliate links, meaning I earn a small commission if you purchase through these links at no additional cost to you. Thank you for your support! The Weight Of Adding Video - The First Look at Apple HLSThe second big theme of today's show is the pressure, and potential pitfalls, of adding video to your podcasting workflow. I break down what's happening with Apple HLS video, what hosts like Captivate are charging, and why you need to seriously consider the “weight” video adds before taking the plunge.Getting Your Edited Audio To People In Apple - You Can't (If you add video)Can you maintain your audio quality? Should you be editing audio and video together, or keeping them separate? I also share some spot-on advice from Elsie Escobar about only adding video if it makes sense for your goals—not because you feel FOMO or outside pressure.Whether you're mic shopping, contemplating a shift to video, or just want a sanity check on your podcasting process, this episode is for you.
