Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for June 7, 2026 is: MacGyver • muh-GHYE-ver • verb To MacGyver something is to make, form, or repair it with materials that are conveniently on hand. // Social media websites are full of videos that show people MacGyvering everything from a life jacket out of a pair of pants to a stove using three metal cans and some dirt. See the entry > Examples: “Maybe your shovel broke the first time you tried to clear wet, heavy snow off your sidewalk and you never replaced it. ... Of course, before you start MacGyvering a shovel from spare parts in your garage, you can ask a neighbor for assistance or make a few phone calls and pay for a service to clear your driveway or sidewalks.” — Caroline Anschutz, SlashGear.com, 28 Jan. 2026 Did you know? Angus MacGyver, as portrayed by actor Richard Dean Anderson in the titular, action-packed television series MacGyver, was many things—including a secret agent, a Swiss Army knife enthusiast, and a convert to vegetarianism—but he was no MacGuffin (a character that keeps the plot in motion despite lacking intrinsic importance). In fact, so memorable was this man, his mullet, and his ability to use whatever was available to him—often simple things, such as a paper clip, chewing gum, or a rubber band—to escape a sticky situation or to make a device to help him complete a mission, that people began associating his name with making quick fixes or finding innovative solutions to immediate problems. Hence the verb MacGyver, a slang term meaning to “make, form, or repair (something) with what is conveniently on hand.” After years of steadily increasing and increasingly varied usage following the show's run from 1985 to 1992 (tracked in some detail here), MacGyver was added to our online dictionary in 2022.

Are you watching a social experiment, or a system of orchestrated human exploitation? Today on Eyes Wide Open, we're joined by Professor Tim Wilson, winner of The Circle (UK), and reality TV rights activist and host Nick Thompson to pull back the curtain on the troubling Married at First Sight scandal. Tim and Nick discuss the MAFS UK scandal and the troubling ethical failures of the reality TV industry. We dive into how massive productions like Married at First Sight UK (or MAFS UK) prioritize drama over participant safety. We expose the systemic negligence, lack of regulation, and manufacture of dangerous, risky situations for ratings that are embedded in the reality TV landscape.  We explore the serious psychological risks for cast members, including exploitation and trauma, and why current industry standards like the self-proclaimed "gold standard" for safety are failing spectacularly.  Nick and Professor Wilson contrast these systemic failures with the mission of the UCAN Foundation, a nonprofit co-founded by Thompson to provide ethical treatment, support, and advocacy for reality TV cast members. Whether you're a viewer, a participant, or an industry professional, this conversation provides a roadmap for returning to a culture of advocacy, transparency, and human-centric media.   In this episode, you will learn: ✅MAFS UK scandal exposed with an in-depth look into the serious allegations and repeated pattern of neglect in the recent Married at First Sight UK ✅ How psychological profiling and evaluations are misused to profile and manipulate contestants for specific storylines. ✅ Professor Tim Wilson shares his research on institutional betrayal, explaining how ethical standards are often "performative" in high-profit environments. ✅The "Gold Standard" lies in an investigation into how current reality TV safety protocols fail to protect vulnerable cast members from exploitation and trauma ✅ How the UCAN Foundation, a mental health advocacy nonprofit, is stepping in to offer ethical support and a new framework for the industry. About Our Guest Professor Tim Wilson is a British investigative integrity expert with a background that spans high-level public service, including significant roles within Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Constabulary, and unique insights from his time as a contestant on the reality competition series The Circle, Professor Wilson possesses a one-of-a-kind perspective on media dynamics and systemic failure. Through his YouTube channel, academic research, and public commentary, he pushes for transparency, human-centric standards, and unwavering ethical practice in media and investigative processes.   Our Mission Eyes Wide Open is a space for honest communication. Our goal is to remove the stigmas around mental health, holistic lifestyles, culture, and free speech so you can show up as your authentic self with your eyes wide open. Send us Fan MailThe Trial Lawyers College -- which your host Jonathan Katz attended in 1995, followed to this day during the year with periodic trial preparation gatherings of TLC alums and others (shout out to our repeat co-host, criminal defense lawyer supreme, and my decades-long friend Christopher Flohr for hosting such monthly gatherings for years at his Maryland law office) -- makes clear that the TLC does not "offer training for those lawyers who represent government, corporations or large business interests." A sizeable chunk of Trial Lawyers College attendees are criminal defense and plaintiffs personal injury attorneys. When Jon learned that National College of DUI Defense leader Andrew Mishlove embraces Trial Lawyers College approaches, Jon Katz invited him to speak on this Beat the Prosecution podcast, to include addressing integrating TLC approaches with winning DUI defense. Andrew exemplifies the truism that there are always more essential lessons to learn. When he was already in his fifties and very accomplished as a DUI defense lawyer, Andrew learned about the Trial Lawyers College and immediately embraced its approach of persuading through storytelling and applying psychodram and scene setting approaches. Andrew is right on point in talking about the story catalyst that Alfred Hitchcock named the MacGuffin, and the hero's journey of the story. He wonderfully weaves My Cousin Vinny and Star Wars in articulating that approach. Andrew also discusses using the Moth storytelling approach (see his article on the Moth here) -- which is covered at the TLC's Graduate II program -- giving credit to Nebraska lawyer Maren Chaloupka, who addresses storytelling as involving the story worth telling, running from extraordinary to every day events that can be transformative. Andrew also here discusses his week-long annual program with the NCDD entitled Serious Science: Advanced Course in Blood Drug Analysis & Trial Advocacy, where in addition to focusing on persuading for justice for the defense in court, the participants have an opportunity to experience blood analysis from the viewpoint and approach of blood examining and analyzing scientists, whether their testimony is for the defense or prosecution. This episode is also available on YouTube and Apple Podcasts. This podcast with Fairfax, Virginia criminal / DUI lawyer Jon Katz is playable on all devices at podcast.BeatTheProsecution.com. Daebak K-Rambles Podcast: Kdrama Reviews

On Episode 108 of the Daebak K-Rambles Podcast, Jess and guest Lola from Lola Pops Off About Kdramas Podcast unpack the relentless, sweat-soaked summer thriller Two Weeks, starring Lee Joon-gi, Kim So-yeon, Ryu Soo-young, and Park Ha-sun.Jess and Lola talk through this messy, melodramatic, and utterly addictive K-drama from 2013, discussing the unapologetically over-the-top performances and how the drama leans hard into its fugitive premise, complete with motorcycle escapes (while handcuffed, mind you), MacGuffin digital cameras, and parkour (actor Lee Joon-gi 100 percent, no question about it, did himself). The show swings big with cinematic set pieces—from explosive mountain diversions to high-speed ferry chases—and isn't afraid to get weird, whether it's a cop's funky leather murse clipped to a carabiner or a sudden baby delivery in a powerless rural farmhouse.By the final stretch, Two Weeks transforms from a gritty chase drama into a full-blown emotional gauntlet, where redemption, fatherhood, and survival collide. As Tae-san fights to clear his name and save his daughter in time, the series asks whether a man defined by his worst choices can still become someone worth saving.GUEST: LolaInstagram: @lolapopsoffaboutkdramasTikTok: @lolapopsoffaboutkdramasWebsite: http://www.lolapopsoffaboutkdramas.comIntro Music Credit: “Golden Coconut Club” by Tearliner, from the Cheese in the Trap OST. Angry friends make broken hearts. And broken hearts usually result in death. Nobody is going to die...yet...but I think the poetry of the moment may move us as we travel through these broken dreams and broken promises. So, let's break this open, shall we? Broken bones, or bone fractures, are a very common injury and can affect anyone at any age. Anyone can break a bone. But only Reed can stretch a broken bone. That is a horrible mental image, but that is what I am here for. To bring you horrible mental images to keep you up all night. A broken heart is a metaphor. It represents the feeling one has when great loss or deep longing creates intense emotional stress or pain. In brief, it sucks. All in all, I would not choose this service. But it happens. And how we deal with a broken heart says a lot about a person. I punch things. Don't judge. I love using broken rock in my landscaping projects. I just like the look aesthetic of pebbles, gravel, and stone around the yard. There is a satisfying feeling when you step on the rocky path and feel the crunch. It is clean, and pretty. And the more rock you lay down, the less mowing you need to do. A broken, or perforated eardrum, is a hole or tear in the thin tissue between the ear canal and the middle ear. This is caused by children yelling loudly in your ear. There is no other way that this happens. That is it. It must stop. "Broken Ground" is the name of a 2018 crime thriller written by Val McDermid. Apparently, it is the fifth in her Karen Pirie series. I know nothing about any of that. But I am sure that it does not feature a scene with Fantastic Four or the Avengers. But I could be wrong. I looked up what a broken MacGuffin was and tripped over a dismantled MacGuffin. That is where you break up the thing that runs the plot and make it a fetch quest. Interesting, but not relevant. But that is par for the course. Broken skin, including cuts, scratches, or chronic fissures, occurs when the epidermis is damaged, leaving it vulnerable to infection and moisture loss. Or it is when you get an ouchie. Sometimes a band aid works. Other times you need to cauterize the wound. Either way, you are probably gonna be crying. Suck it up!!! And there we go. I hope that this did not break you too much with our wacky random thoughts and off topic musings. If we did, let us know. Or don't. Is Panic Room just Home Alone For Adults? David Fincher's 2002 home invasion thriller is sharper, darker, and weirder than you remember — and this week we're breaking down every inch of it. Brian, John, and returning guest Anastasia Elfman revisit one of the most underrated thrillers of the early 2000s. They cover Fincher's Hitchcockian direction, those impossibly fluid CGI camera moves, and the film's relentless tension-building — plus everything the IMDb synopsis conveniently left out. On the table this week: whether Jared Leto's cornrow-sporting Junior ruins the film or serves it (the panel is divided), why Forest Whitaker's Burnham is the most sympathetic criminal in cinema history, and why Dwight Yoakam's Raul was robbed of an Oscar. They also dig into the bearer bonds MacGuffin — yes, whoever physically holds them legally owns them, robbery be damned — and unpack the wild behind-the-scenes story of Nicole Kidman's knee injury, Jodie Foster filming while pregnant, and how Kristen Stewart ended up in the role that was originally cast very differently. Plus: diabetes as the fourth villain of Panic Room, the Home Alone propane explosion comparison, and what you would actually do if the cops showed up at your door while armed criminals watched you on camera. The episode closes with a tease of Cinema Psycho Show's 10th anniversary special — Brian and John are fixing Batman Forever. You heard that right. We discuss: Celebrating K Drama Chat turning four years old  Our reactions to watching the BTS concert live on Netflix and its deep connection to Korean culture, including the meaning behind “Arirang” Why No Other Choice feels like a movie for our times, especially in light of job loss, automation, and AI-driven disruption The fascinating 15+ year journey of the screenplay and how Park Chan-wook adapted a Western novel into a deeply Korean story Lee Byung Hun's portrayal of an “ordinary salaryman” pushed into desperation, and how his emotional range makes Yoo Man Soo both terrifying and sympathetic Son Ye Jin's nuanced performance as Mi Ri—a loving but resilient wife whose loyalty is pushed to its absolute limits The symbolism of the paper industry and how work becomes identity, making job loss feel like the loss of self The concept of shame (via Brené Brown) and how Yoo Man Soo embodies withdrawal, people-pleasing, and ultimately violence The house as the story's MacGuffin—representing pride, history, identity, and the one thing Man Soo refuses to lose The progression of Man Soo's moral collapse, from humiliation to rationalization to calculated violence Mi Ri's devastating moral dilemma and why she ultimately chooses to stay, raising questions about love, survival, and “no other choice” The chilling ending: Man Soo alone in a fully automated factory, symbolizing the triumph of machines over people The use of dark humor and absurdity to make an otherwise horrifying story both watchable and unsettlingly funny Standout filmmaking choices, including tight framing, distant voyeuristic shots, and the striking final montage with Ri-one's cello performance Our favorite lines, the film's provocative title, and what we think happens to this family after the story ends. Starfleet Academy Episode 9 gave us a lot to chew on, and this week DJz is joined by Bek and Bubba Joe to break it all down. From Caleb's desperate mission to find his mother, to Sam's continued evolution, to the major Omega particle reveal, this episode delivered big character moments, big lore questions, and plenty of debate. We dig into whether this was a strong Jonathan Frakes outing, how the episode handled Caleb's reunion with his mother, what the Venari Rall situation could mean going forward, and whether Starfleet should ever be anywhere near synthetic Omega in the first place. Plus, we look ahead to the season finale and ask the big question: whose story has Starfleet Academy Season 1 really been? #StarTrek #StarfleetAcademy #TalkingTrek #JonathanFrakes #StarTrekPodcast #OmegaParticle #Caleb #Sam #Bek #BubbaJoe   00:02:33 - Show kickoff and spoiler warning for Episode 9 00:05:41 - First impressions: Bek loves it, Bubba Joe calls it Frakes' weakest episode 00:07:19 - “What's a MacGuffin?” and the argument over the barely crewed Athena 00:12:14 - Why wasn't Lura Thock on the mission? 00:17:28 - Recapping the episode plot: Caleb, Sam, Genesis, and Darem steal the shuttle 00:19:08 - Omega particle callback and why this was a huge Voyager reference 00:24:17 - Why would Starfleet ever create synthetic Omega? 00:27:40 - Deep dive into the “new Sam” and how much she has changed 00:30:12 - Sam says she didn't respect who she used to be 00:37:29 - Sam joins Caleb's mission and the stranded shuttle crew reaches Ukeck 00:39:14 - What exactly is the Venari Ral and how do they function? 00:45:03 - Caleb's messages, cracked encryption, and whether his mother is baiting him 00:46:51 - Was Nus Braka trying to isolate Ake outside the Omega mine net? 00:59:44 - Debate over Caleb's choices after reuniting with his mother 01:00:47 - Would Caleb's mother ever have trusted a Federation escape route? 01:26:09 - The reunion scene: emotional payoff or wasted dramatic potential? 01:28:12 - Jonathan Frakes news and discussion of his future with Star Trek 01:30:54 - Bek explains why this episode worked for her despite the criticism 01:37:02 - How big will the finale cliffhanger really be? 01:38:23 - Final question: whose story has Season 1 really been?

Blending Shulgin's chemical poetry with PKD's reality-glitching paranoia, we explore a compound that attaches story itself to your serotonin receptors. What happens when the trip starts editing its own script? Funny first. Terrifying second. Profound always. This episode is a three-act structure in audio form: Hypothetical synthesis in a lab of self-doubt, proposed pharmacology that syncs your inner narrator with the cosmic feed, and a trip report where perspectives switch like camera cuts, ceilings read you back, and a glass of water becomes the ultimate MacGuffin. From Santa Rosa's fog-shrouded edges (February 2026, where realities bleed like melting icicles), we scavenger truths from the unmade—laughing at the absurd, crying at the irrevocable, and emerging with windows cleaned of baseline illusions.Key Timestamps:•  00:00 - Intro & Disclaimer: Welcome to the series—speculative fiction only, no labs required. A MacGuffin is an object or event that motivates characters in a story but is generally insignificant. Every justification given for car kill switches, increased surveillance of the general public, for Internet censorship, for war, for government overreach, etc., is a MacGuffin. We need to stop drunk drivers, general crime, block pornography, fight terrorists, and ensure public safety. It's the same story over and over again, told at the expense of liberty. David Knight joins us on this episode for an open-ended conversation on the MacGuffin Kill Switch. *The is the FREE archive, which includes advertisements. Episode Title: "I'm In The Minority" - Vengeance on Varos Review THE EMPTY TARDIS: The Missing Guest: Felicity Cousins from The Flop Cast was supposed to join but had to bow out about an hour before recording - her voice has been acting up again. "I don't think she ever really fully recovered from the last time she was sick when she was with us." THE SEXY DOCTOR ANNOUNCEMENT: John: "She was going to miss the announcement that we are now dealing with the sexiest Doctor to date!" Jim: "According to People Magazine? According to the newspapers?" The Daily Mirror: "In addition to having the sexiest Doctor, we also have a companion with great assets." Jim's Pun: "You're really keeping abreast of this stuff." John: "Yes, I am." THE SEXINESS DEBATE: Jim: "Honestly, sexier than Jon Pertwee? Come on." THE BIG QUESTION: John: "I told you this was one of my two favorite Colin Baker stories, and I would actually rank this up there as some of the best Doctor Who in Classic Who. What are your initial thoughts about Vengeance on Varos?" PRODUCTION DETAILS: Production Code: 6V (V for Varos!) Air Dates: January 19-26, 1985 Writer: Philip Martin (first story - will have sequel with Sil next season) Director: Ron Jones Original Titles: "Domain" and "Planet of Fear" THE PUBLIC RECEPTION: The Controversy: Episode didn't get very well received by the public. Scenes like: Acid bath deaths Attempted hangings Genetic experiments on women The Complaints: Widely criticized in Radio Times Letters page and in TV program Points of View. Unlike Before: "Unlike previous criticisms of the show's violence, this time it was raised by members of the general public. Some of the show's fans were even against this, besides people like Mary Whitehouse." PART ONE SYNOPSIS: Desolate planet Varos - citizen workers make up strange society of viewers who watch public torture and executions and vote on whether or not their Governor will be punished on camera for his actions. Official currently negotiating over price of Varos's precious Zeiton (Zeiton or Zyton?) with Sil, contentious representative of Galatron Mining Concern. Dealings going poorly for Varos. Sil has inside man - Governor's Chief Officer on his payroll advising him to oust current leader. Doctor and Peri arrive seeking Zeiton to repair ailing TARDIS, find themselves freeing rebel named Jondar from televised execution. As Governor, Sil, and everyone on planet watch, Doctor and Peri escape with Jondar and his wife Areta, only to wander into Purple Zone - tunnels haunted by fantastic illusions. Getting through them, Doctor discovers TARDIS has been captured, then loses Peri and others to guards chasing them. He himself walks into arid desert illusion. While citizenry watch, he seemingly succumbs to great heat and perishes. THE META COMMENTARY: Jim: "It's very meta what we would call meta today. It strikes you immediately that he's commenting about violence on television." The American Target: "I personally felt a little targeted because I feel like in extension they - or he was - pointing that a lot at us here in the United States." John: "I'd say that's fair." THE PENAL COLONY: Jim: "Weirdly enough, we're also going back to the old Australia thing. But as in good Doctor Who form, we get something like that dropped and then it's not picked up on again." The Discovery: "The whole thing about 'I discovered that this is a penal colony' - or it grew out of a penal colony. I said 'Oh, all right, we've kind of had that a lot recently.' But then I remembered that it wasn't brought up again." THE TIME CRAFT MYSTERY - AGAIN: Jim: "Another thing that's used here - I'm sure you noticed it, and I don't get it unless it's something we're going to be rewarded with at some point - there's another mention of another space-time craft. So why do we get two of these mentions now? Or is that just coincidence?" John's Explanation: "This particular season, without I don't know if they realize it, if it was done on purpose - we deal a lot with other alien cultures trying their hand in time travel. Including we're going to have, if I'm not mistaken, humans soon." JIM'S OPINION: "Piss or get off the pot. That's an interesting aspect, although as Homer Simpson's father said, 'I ain't for it, I'm agin it' because I think it does take the Mickey out of the Time Lords. But if you're going to go down that road, then tell us that story - what will the Time Lords do about making sure they're the only ones that get to do that?" WHAT JOHN LOVES: JOHN'S LIST: The Music: "I love the music. I think the music is very inspired for this." The Twin Dilemma Doctor: "This is more of the Doctor from Twin Dilemma - as he so callously says to Peri 'Oh well, you'll just live out the few years you got left, you'll die and that's it. But I'm stuck here forever in the...' That was actually an interesting moment. There was a little thread of Tom Baker's 'I am the walker in eternity' or whatever the hell he said in Pyramids of Mars." The Torture Scene: "I thought it interesting that right off the bat we get a torture scene as Jason Connery's character Jondar is chained up. That's one of the first things that was called out - 'Oh look at this, we just start the show and this guy's being brutalized?' I guess they wanted to hit people with it right off the bat. 'This isn't your typical Doctor Who.'" Jim: "It definitely isn't." THE GREEK CHORUS: John: "I was shocked - I didn't really realize it until watching it this time. We've got our two folks there sitting and watching. They represent us, the audience, the rest of Varos. How casual they talk about those being tortured as though they were fictional. You'd sit there go 'Oh no, that was the guy who got killed last week' - say that casually because it's all fiction. But these are real people and they're saying it the same way." Jim: "I mean, I think that's part of the message - violence on television is numbing us to the fact that there is real violence in the world." THE APPRECIATION: Jim: "I'll admit that part is kind of interesting because those two are totally in that room the entire time. They're kind of like a Greek chorus. They're off to one side, commenting on everything going on. Then they themselves have a little struggle between them." The Uniqueness: "That was an interesting thing to do because I don't really remember anything else like that - two characters who don't have any interaction whatsoever with all the other characters. And they're in one set the entire time." GUEST STARS: The Governor - Martin Jarvis: One of those rare people to have appeared in all three decades of Doctor Who: 1965's The Web Planet as one of the Menoptera Invasion of the Dinosaurs in 1974 Jim: "We wouldn't recognize him from that. But that's cool." John: "See, point to me - I recognize that you recognize him. I went 'This dude has totally been in Doctor Who before.'" Areta - Stephen Yardley: Previously played Severin in Genesis of the Daleks (1975) Owen Teale (Maldak): Going to appear later in Torchwood episode "Countrycide" Etta - Sheila Reid: "I was today years old when I discovered that Etta is Clara Oswald's grandmother in Doctor Who, appearing in both a Peter Capaldi and a Matt Smith story. And she's wonderful as the grandmother." John: "She's adorable as Clara's grandmother. Still with us. Still acting. Last credit was just last year." SIL - NABIL SHABAN: The Condition: Born with osteogenesis imperfecta which left his bones brittle. Recent Passing: "Only passed away this past October at the age of 72. We'll see him again next season in Trial of a Time Lord, one of the stories there." Jim's Memory: "I did look him up because I couldn't shake the feeling he was in Time Bandits, but he wasn't. He really seemed like one of the - and pardon the term - dwarves, the little people. But he's not. He's not one of them. Kenny Baker is from Star Wars." The Background: "He's Jordanian British."   PART TWO SYNOPSIS: Doctor revives on gurney just before being put into acid bath and escapes. Governor tries to wring answers out of Peri but her truth falls on deaf ears. When Doctor is recaptured, Governor stages old-fashioned hanging to trick Doctor into talking, but instead makes Sil reveal his treachery against Varos. Peri and Areta put into transmogrifier and begin to change into animals. Doctor pulls the plug and together with Jondar they escape further into dome. There they come across more illusions and near death, while Chief Officer makes his own play to oust Governor with another public vote. Peri and Governor escape with help of guard and meet up with Doctor and others. Quillam and Chief Officer perish by poison vines. Back at Governor's chambers, Sil discovers his invasion has been stopped and he is ordered by his own people to negotiate for Zeiton at any price at all. A win for people of Varos, especially when Governor ceases all public tortures and executions. HOT TAKE: Jim: "What the heck? Well, where's the vengeance? Where's the vengeance? Why? I mean, just because it's a cool alliteration? The Doctor's never met any of the bad guys before. There's no vengeance that I'm aware of, so I didn't get that." PART TWO FALLS APART: Jim: "Part two - for me, it falls apart. I think it's kind of sort of everything but the kitchen sink." The Purple Zone: "Especially at the end when they get further into dome and they've dropped the term 'the Purple Zone' - which is unfortunate because I kind of liked that. When we get to the point where all of a sudden there's like this flora and it's poison vines..." Quillam and the Chief Officer: "And that's how they get rid of Quillam and the Chief Officer who doesn't ever have a name in this - he's just the Chief Officer. But he looks like a bad guy at least." John: "All the guys, right?" PART TWO WEAKNESSES: Jim: "Part two is definitely weaker than part one. Then we go back to Sil, and everything's been taken care of for some reason. His company, his people, whatever - they just sort of change their mind and he's out on his tail." The Other Source: "There was something to the effect that they found another source, so there was no point in... just abandon these people, we don't need them." Jim's Problem: "I wasn't really buying it. I think it just really whimpers out at the end. We needed like an explosion. I really didn't care for the ending, especially since the Doctor is not the instrument of vengeance." ANOTHER AVENUE TO NOWHERE: Jim: "It is interesting, I'm with you. That said, it is another avenue that this story goes down with little to no reason for it to be there. You have the old trope of the valuable mineral - it's being mined, it's the MacGuffin, whatever, everybody wants it. But then you throw in this Quillam character and the transmogrifier and the thing about the animals and all of that, and then they're cured almost immediately." The Missed Opportunity: "Would it have been interesting to let them stay like that for rest of story and then get cured at the end? I think yes, if you're going to go down that road." The Empty Feeling: "This is another symptom of that 'feeling a little empty' at the beginning. There's a lot of stuff thrown into this part two that are just bridges to nowhere in a way. Sorry. I agreed and then quickly had to throw in a caveat there. But I am who I am." NEXT TIME: Monday (Patreon #155): Music, Voyager Part 3, Memory TARDIS spin ("hopefully not Terror of the Zygons, although I think that's gone") Sophie Aldred's Podcast: "I want to talk briefly about Sophie Aldred's podcast again. I finally caught up with most of the episodes including their little Christmas episode they did that has basically ties up a lot of the plot points they've been doing throughout their show. Remember I told you it's part interview, part story? Well, they did like a 20-minute audio drama with Russell T. Davies and Forde Colin Baker and Nicholas Briggs." John's Assessment: "We'll talk briefly about it - what worked and what didn't work. Because there were some things that I was kind of like 'Yeah, this is just too weird for me.'" Next Friday (Patreon) then Saturday (Main Feed): The Mark of the Rani! Another two-parter. Jim: "Uh-oh, are we up to that point?" John: "Yeah, we're up to that point." Jim: "Rah-rah Rani!" What do you do when following orders means sacrificing innocent lives? In this episode, we examine the new Peacock series The Copenhagen Test starring Simu Liu, exploring the ethical dilemmas facing modern intelligence operatives. Through a spy thriller that uses biometric surveillance technology as its MacGuffin, we unpack questions about collateral damage, revenge versus ideology, and whether spy agencies can ever justify their methods.Questions We DiscussedWhat is the Copenhagen test and why does the show use it as its title? We explore this impossible moral dilemma presented to special operations soldiers and intelligence agents, examining whether there are situations where no ethical choice exists.Does the show take a stance on whether US spy agencies are justified? We analyze how the series sidesteps ideological questions by making its villains motivated by money and personal revenge rather than competing political philosophies. How does the show handle collateral damage in intelligence operations? We examine powerful scenes showing the emotional aftermath of missions, particularly through the character Parker who witnesses the deadly consequences of her recommendations. Can spy fiction avoid taking political positions in today's climate? Ever chased a glowing orb through three dungeons, only to find out it's just... a really fancy paperweight? Congratulations, you've met a MacGuffin! This week, the RPGBOT crew dissects the mysterious art of the object that drives your players forward, whether it's the One Ring, the Orb of Shiny Plot Device, or the legendary Sandwich of Ultimate Power. Grab your notes, your dice, and your vague sense of purpose, because we're going beyond the plot twist. Randall James' Melancon Before you roll for insight, roll on over to Amazon and grab Randall James' novella Melancon—a hauntingly beautiful story that pairs perfectly with a rainy game night and a cup of something strong. Support an indie author, dive into a darkly poetic world, and show Randall some love. Show Notes In this episode of the RPGBOT.Podcast, Tyler, Randall, and Ash dive deep into the narrative tool that keeps players moving: the MacGuffin. Whether it's a cursed relic, a kidnapped noble, or a mysterious prophecy, MacGuffins are storytelling fuel for Dungeon Masters and Game Masters across systems like Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder 2e. The hosts unpack what makes a good MacGuffin (and what makes a lazy one), explore how player agency and motivation interact with narrative devices, and share practical tips for integrating MacGuffins into campaigns without making them feel hollow or forced. Expect examples from movies, famous campaigns, and some spicy opinions on whether The Deck of Many Things is secretly the best—or worst—MacGuffin ever written. Key Takeaways A MacGuffin isn't the story—it's the spark. It gets the party moving, but your players should define what it means. Player motivation matters. Tie your MacGuffin to personal stakes or relationships to avoid "fetch quest fatigue." Use narrative misdirection wisely. A twist should feel earned, not like a reroll on your own plot. Every system benefits from good pacing. Pathfinder 2e, D&D 5e, or your favorite indie TTRPG—MacGuffins can unify a campaign arc when used thoughtfully. Don't overcomplicate it. We talk about the art and science of screenwriting and how the best K Dramas follow—or creatively depart from—dramatic structure to deliver compelling, emotional stories. In this episode, we discuss:The shows that are heavily spoiled in this episode: Crash Landing On You, Mr. Queen, Mr. Sunshine, When the Phone Rings, and Captivating the King.Ellen's background as a screenwriter and technical writer, and how her passion for K Dramas began with My Mister. The Western three-act structure versus the Korean four-act structure (gi-seung-jeon-gyeol), and how each style approaches storytelling and character development.Detailed examples of setup, midpoint, and conclusion in Crash Landing On You, Mr. Queen, and Mr. Sunshine. What makes these shows work: believable character arcs, clear motivations, strong midpoint turns, and emotional payoffs. The redemption arc as a dramatic formula, especially in characters like Gu Seung-jun (CLOY) and Jang Bong-hwan (Mr. Queen). Why humor breaks are essential in Korean dramas and how they add richness to character and story.Foreshadowing and payoffs (or lack thereof) in When the Phone Rings, and why the “Argan” plot twist derailed the show. The pacing and structural missteps in Captivating the King, including over-explaining, weak female lead development, and a lack of trust in the audience. The importance of a “MacGuffin” in each drama—a central object or goal everyone is chasing. How K Dramas “trust the audience” by skipping mundane scenes and using implication rather than exposition. The emotional power of music in K Dramas, especially in Mr. Queen, CLOY, and Mr. Sunshine, and how it enhances tone and viewer engagement. Why well-crafted character interaction reveals motivation better than exposition. The writing mantra: “Make me care.” How the best dramas engage our emotions without making us think about structure until the end. What we're watching now, including Bon Appetit, Heavenly Ever After, Typhoon Family, Because This is My First Life, Signal, and Will You Marry Me.A big reveal: the next K Drama we'll be recapping in Season 13! Step into the shadows of cinematic history with this thrilling episode of Cracking the Code of Spy Movies, where Dan and Tom uncover 10 things you did not know about THE 39 STEPS (1935) This 1935 Alfred Hitchock classic didn't just entertain—it laid the groundwork for the entire spy genre, influencing everything from James Bond to Mission: Impossible. In this episode, we explore how Hitchcock transformed John Buchan's novel into a suspenseful masterpiece, inventing iconic tropes like the "innocent man on the run," the mysterious MacGuffin, and the romantic tension of handcuffed leads. You'll hear how Robert Donat's performance shaped the British spy hero archetype, and how Madeleine Carroll became Hitchcock's first "cool blonde"—a blueprint for future leading ladies. From improvised speeches to hidden visual clues (like the villain's missing fingertip), Hitchcock's genius shines through. We reveal behind-the-scenes secrets, including how Hitchcock "accidentally" lost the handcuff key to spark real chemistry between his stars, and how the groundbreaking train sequence set a new standard for chase scenes. You'll also learn about Hitchcock's early cameo tradition, the clever use of British vaudeville in the finale, and how THE 39 STEPS helped launch Hitchcock's Hollywood career. Whether you're a die-hard spy film fan or new to the genre, this episode is packed with wit, insight, and historical gems.

Part One | Part TwoI didn't just leave the Democratic Party. I ran screaming from them. On Friday night, I was reminded once again why.The news hit X that Trump had died. It wasn't true, of course, but for some reason, those who think that the only way to gain back power from Trump is “mess with him” or “troll him” seemed to think this was funny. But as usual, the Left can't meme. It wasn't funny. It was chilling because of how obsessed with Trump they've been and how their hatred has boiled over into madness. It became a frenzy, a wild-eyed bacchanalia on TikTok. They were smiling and cackling at the mere thought of “it finally happening.”After all, the TikTok trend of “when it happens” has been flourishing on the app, along with “somebody just do it,” for quite some time. They're strung-out junkies by now, hunting for that dopamine hit that comes from blurting out what shouldn't be said.Looking at their eyes, their crazy, crazy eyes, always makes me think of the Manson followers who had that same look, especially as they skipped through the courthouse while on trial for having slaughtered innocent people who were enjoying a hot August night in 1969 before the creepy crawlers came. The conclusion at the time was that they'd been brainwashed by Charlie. But how he brainwashed them wasn't that different from how the Left has brainwashed their followers. He surfed the wave of the anti-establishment counterculture, finding easy targets to dehumanize and blame. Are you angry? He seemed to say, take it out on them. They deserve it.The evil was at the top - cops were “pigs,” the rich “deserved” to die, which is why when Susan Atkins, aka Sadie, plunged the knife into the pregnant stomach of Sharon Tate, she only felt relief and a kind of euphoria:The Left of today reminds me so much of my childhood growing up as a hippie kid in Topanga during that time. I was too young to really remember the Manson murders, but I could sense the vibe shift in the wake of them. It was their inability to hold power, how the silent majority rejected them, that transformed the “make love not war” hippies into violent radicals.I also knew that we all believed religion was too oppressive, which is partly what birthed the counterculture movement in the first place. Sex, drugs, and rock n' roll only took us so far, I remember that, too. I was a child of the narcissistic “me” generation, where kids were sidelined as adults chased their bliss and “found themselves.”The rise of feminism also meant women adopted a false sense of security, and serial killers and rapists began sprouting up like mushrooms all through the 1970s. I remember the gas lines and the malaise. I remember the pendulum shift, and how welcome it was when our culture finally became too exhausted of the hippies, especially after the violence, and opted for a different kind of life.Money and success were the fix in the 1980s - mortgages, marriages, kids, jobs. But even that failed to do the trick. We were still broken and empty inside. By the 1990s, just as the self-help revolution and therapy culture arose in the wake of the FCC allowing Pharma to market to consumers, we turned to the brave new world of psychologists and psychiatrists who would “fix” us, heal us from our trauma and abuse. After a while, though, how we were abused, what made us victims, would eventually become our identity. For years, every time I met a man or anyone, I would tell my story of abuse to put it all into context: see me as a victim, feel sorry for me.In 2008, the Wall Street bailout of $700 billion was the crisis that sparked the Fourth Turning, according to Neil Howe, who co-authored the book with the late William H. Strauss. But it was an important year for another reason. It was the rise of Barack Obama, the iPhone, Twitter, and Facebook. While the bailout would awaken the public and eventually birth two populist movements — Occupy Wall Street and the Tea Party — the rise of Obama would be the religion we didn't even know we needed. It was a collective sense of purpose where everyone had a seat at the table, but mostly focused on marginalized groups, everyone but the majority. We colonized the internet as Obama built his coalition on Twitter, as civilization began to migrate into virtual spaces. Because we were all connected, we could decide the rules of behavior, of language, of status. We remade a new America online to address our collective trauma and abuse and build a better America, a shining Woketopia on the Hill.As wealth and power shifted Leftward under Obama's rule, much of America's rust belt was abandoned. We didn't realize this as we tinkered with our perfect little world, our insulated bubble. We were so cut off that we almost speciated, with an entirely different language from the rest of America. The ruling elites could find absolution by borrowing oppression. They could elevate the marginalized and use them as a protective layer as the populists began rising up against the government. The Democrats, as the party of the wealthy, didn't have to address their needs or even acknowledge them. Turning the public against them by convicting them as “racists” in the media and in the court of public opinion served the Democrats well. Now, they had an existential crisis because Trump was leading the populists, and they were about to shock the world by winning.Mass PsychosisTrump's win would kick off Trump Derangement Syndrome, otherwise known as mass psychosis. Maybe it wouldn't have afflicted so many and gone on for so long if the people at the top - the Democrats and the ruling class - cared enough to calm things down. But they didn't. Having a public crippled by mass psychosis served their needs.Trump Derangement Syndrome: The Movie begins there. It was never about Trump. He was what Alfred Hitchcock would call “The MacGuffin.” It's the thing people in the movie care about, but the audience knows doesn't matter. As they chased their Macguffin for ten years, they had no idea that the real story unfolding was what happened to all of them. What happened during COVID, during lockdowns? What happened to a group of people who were fed the Russiagate lie, and even now, it has never been corrected or debunked. What happened to people who were told by the New Yorker, the New York Times, and the Washington Post that fascism was coming to America? What happened to the young people who absorbed and internalized the unending and relentless focus on the evils of Trump as the media cherry-picked the worst things he said and dumped them into the churn? And all for what? To turn out voters when the candidates don't drive enthusiasm? They never once thought using fear for that long would ultimately cause a mental health crisis in this country, especially among the young?By 2020, I could no longer endure the daily ritual, the two minutes of hate for one more minute. It felt like poison. I had to know whether it was true or not. Was Trump really all of these things we believed him to be, or was he the guy we all remembered from the 1980s, the guy in Home Alone? Or, in the worst-case scenario, was he the Goldstein-like figure from Orwell's 1984, used only to keep their voters in compliance and full of hate?So I did the hard thing and I decided to find out for myself. I watched Trump's rallies heading into the election, all five a day. I saw his supporters for the first time. They were nothing like as described. They were intersectional, for one thing, all different races, gay people, and even trans people. The one thing they had in common was that they did not belong to the ruling class and were not part of the Doomsday Cult. They were sick of Trump Derangement Syndrome: The Movie. They were exhausted by it. They wanted to move on. So did I.For me, finally seeing that none of it was real, that Trump wasn't who I was led to believe he was, that he was the Macguffin, and his supporters were not mouth-frothing brown shirts fueled by racism. And that meant, for me, there was no going back. It took all the courage I could muster — my Soylent Green is People moment, my To Serve Man is a Cookbook plea to say to them, “It's not about race. It's about class!”But class had been eliminated out of necessity. If America is a systemically racist country, then Barack and Michelle Obama are still oppressed, which gives them status. But some white guy strung out on fentanyl dying on the streets in Wisconsin is still an oppressor and has no status. Are they surprised the revolution happened to them? The Trump They Invented Never ExistedThe story the Left has been telling itself is how Shakespeare once described life in the play Macbeth: A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.Focusing solely on Trump for ten long years has meant they have never made any progress in solving the problems that put Trump in power in the first place. They've only hurt themselves because there is no version of this movie that comes to anything good. Should they take back power, what is their plan for the rest of the country that voted for Trump? Gulags? Mass deportation? Firing squads?Trump Derangement Syndrome has all but collapsed the empire, with Hollywood barely clinging to life, network television hemorrhaging viewers, and a rising counterculture movement they can't keep up with. Their jokes aren't funny. Their movies are unwatchable. Their moral superiority is unbearable.Voters are fleeing like rats off a sinking ship. The Democrats themselves have been recorded now as having no faith in the direction of the country, down to zero for the first time in history.Unfortunately, there is no snapping out of it any time soon. They are trapped in a hell of their own making and have arrived at the abyss. Their Great White Hopes, such as Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker, seem to think that “fighting back” must also mean reflecting the mass psychosis that has distorted their perception of reality. But a great leader would be the one to help them out of it, offering rationality and critical thinking. A good leader would welcome Trump's help with crime to save mothers from having to worry about their children, but this is not a party that cares about them. This is a party that only cares about the ruling elite, still stuck in the Doomsday cult.It should not be about Donald Trump 10 years laterWhat has destroyed the Democrats and the Left was never Trump. They could have easily beaten him. They just had to be a little less crazy. But they couldn't even do that. The voters had in Trump someone who could see the working class at all, let alone help address their problems. But really, most of us voted for Trump as a way outThe Democrats have become so disconnected from reality that they believe it's acceptable to sterilize children and amputate their body parts, among other horrors. There is no such thing as a sane Democrat. Even those who seem semi-sane, like Rahm Emanuel, will buckle under the question of “gender affirming care.”That made voting for Trump in 2024 one of the easiest things I've ever done. I will spend the rest of my life reminding every single Democrat that they not only went along with it, but they also fought to preserve it. They own this and every terrible thing that will happen in the next ten years as children wake up and become adults and realize what has been done to them. That's just one of the reasons I think Trump is the Gray Champion of this Fourth Turning, the one we're living through now. 8 years ago, Neil Howe was asked this question. He wasn't prepared to answer it because Trump's presidency had not yet been tested. All of these years later, it's hard to see Trump as anything else:And maybe that's why a death fantasy was their last best hope. Maybe deep down, they know this is the end. Trump Derangement Syndrome: The Movie is nothing less than the rise and fall of a once-mighty empire and a disastrous campaign that has all but destroyed the minds of a generation. What the Democrats don't realize or won't accept is that the pendulum wants to swing. So let it. But until they find their way out of mass psychosis, we should do everything we can to keep them as far away from our schools and our government as possible. It brings me no pleasure to watch the empire fall, but I always knew it would. We built an empire of lies. I also knew that sooner or later, the truth would bring the whole thing crashing down. You can't stop what's coming. It ain't all waiting on you. That's vanity. Jon Herold and Chris Paul return for Episode 367 with a sweeping look at how narratives are weaponized and dismantled in real time. The show kicks off with Steve Bannon's declaration that the Iranian nuclear threat is a “MacGuffin”, a plot device meant to drive fear while hiding deeper objectives. The hosts connect this to Trump's strategic communications and Bannon's War Room, unpacking how a network of players including Rich Higgins, Ezra Cohen-Watnick, and Derek Harvey shaped the MAGA movement's media counteroffensive. They pivot to Supreme Court decisions limiting nationwide injunctions, calling it a seismic win against judicial overreach, while questioning why agency power was simultaneously upheld in the FCC tax ruling. Jon and Chris analyze the “Big Beautiful Bill,” suggesting Trump may be publicly supporting it to provoke opposition and trigger a fiscal showdown. The conversation explores the psychological warfare of existential threats, from nuclear panic to climate narratives, and how these fears are engineered to sever society from God. Wrapping up, they dig into the strategy of reverse narrative psychology, the unraveling of neocon influence in Israel, and whether America is on the brink of a deliberate financial reset.
