Introduction: Welcome to Five & Thrive: a weekly podcast highlighting the Southeast's most interesting news, entrepreneurs, and information of the week, all under 5 minutes.  My name is Jon Birdsong and I'm with Atlanta Ventures.  We have a lot of logistics going on this week in the pod. Excited to share each one. Product of the Week: This product of the week is coming out of Chattanooga founded by Spencer Ware and A.J. Cheek. The name of the company is called Repowr which is an open B2B marketplace of accessible equipment. 3% of trucking companies own 97% of trailer capacity in this highly fragmented market. This leaves little coordination and almost no connected network of vacancy which produces a large amount of inefficiencies in the market.   Getting a trailer, renting it, and using it should be as easy as opening an application, finding a trailer, paying for it, and gettin' to hauling. Welcome to Repowr. And trailers are just the trojan horse for the several other equipment verticals in the market. Check out Repowr if you're in needed of trailer today.      Question of the Week: This week's questions of the week is how do you find a co-founder? This past week I was chatting with an entrepreneur who was looking at finding a co-founder as it is one of the most important decisions maybe outside of finding your life partner. Naturally the easiest way is to find them through your existing work experience and relationships. If those primary sources are limited, then focus on your trusted network of individuals who would vouch for someone. Once your individual network is exhausted, now comes the tougher part but there are a few successful ways I've seen it done. First, seek to find like minded people. Like minded people in this important instance would be someone else looking to start a company. Timing is always everything especially when it comes to people's career, so go to events where other entrepreneurs would go to. I've heard several occasions where co-founders met at a fire-side chat, Atlanta Startup Village, or Atlanta Startup Convo (the next and last one of the year is on Wednesday). Outside of local events, check out the YC Co-founder Matching platform. This is one of the strongest communities of ambitious people online. Lastly, I have also found Reddit forums and other co-founder forums or websites to have worked in the past but it takes a disciplined process, a scrupulous eye, and significant patience. For those looking to start a company, try some of these strategies and let me know which one worked the best for you.  Company Coming Up: There are two companies coming up this week. The first is called Jax Rideshare Rentals and was started by Emory MBA graduate, Julius Bryant. While getting his Masters degree, Julius and his co-founder started leasing out cars they purchased to verified drivers so they could drive Uber and Lyft. Today, they continue to empower people who lack vehicle access in Atlanta and Dallas to earn income via the gig economy but instead of purchasing the cars, they are shifting their focus to organizations who already have the cars and now providing the software and verified drivers to turn those sedentary car lots into cash cows. Keep an eye on this product as they continue to scale city by city.   The second company coming up was started by Georgia Tech Alumnus, Murtaza Bambot and it is called HeartBeat. HeartBeat is the operating system to enhance your community. With their software, any community leader and organizer can host conversations, events, and more. The reason I get excited about HeartBeat is the online YouTube reviews. If you search HeartBeat reviews on YouTube, you'll find videos of users who walk through the product for 15 minutes, praising the product and how it solves a real need. If you're looking to put structure and organization around your online community, check out HeartBeat. That is Heartbeat.chat. Keep up the momentum and product love! Raise a Glass: Lastly, let's all raise a glass to Saltbox. Tyler Scriven, Maxwell Bonnie, and Paul d'arrigo have created the co-warehousing space. Across the country, Saltbox owns and operates large warehouses where tenants who run e-commerce stores can store, ship, and scale their product offerings without having to sign a long term lease. There are hundreds of thousands of small businesses getting their start shipping product from the garage, the next affordable and flexible step is Saltbox. They just raised $35M from Cox Enterprises and Pendulum to enhance their software solution to provide a full suite of services improving the logistics for their customers. Congrats to the entire Saltbox team!      Annnnd, that's 5 minutes. Thank you for listening to Five and Thrive. We provide 5 minutes of quality information, so you can thrive in the upcoming week. Please subscribe to the show and spread the good word!  Resources discussed in this episode: Product of the Week: Repowr Question of the Week: How do you find a co-founder? PIT & PENDULUM, 27min., Canada, Drama/Horror Directed by J. Aldric Gaudet It is the terrorizing story of a person sentenced to death who becomes the plaything of their jailers. They are sent walking through a dark room in hopes they will fall into a pit. When that doesn't happen they are tied down on a table to watch the painfully slow descent of a swinging pendulum with a sharp-edged blade aimed at their stomach. Escaping from the blade did not mean freedom. The walls of the dungeon grow blistering hot first, then squeeze together to push them to the brink of the pit, before being saved at the very last second. https://www.pit-pendulum.com/ From J. Aldric Gaudet on the obstacles he faced making the film: Walking the tightrope between showing too much and showing too little, while at the same time complimenting Poe's words without embellishing. It's becoming a Back of the Bookshelf tradition that we release a horror themed episode on Halloween and 2022 is no exception. This time we've gone with a little known French story called La Torture Par L'Espérance (The Torture by Hope) by Villiers de L'Isle Adam. The story was originally published in issue 3191 of the newspaper Gil Blas on 13th August 1888 and was printed again later in the year in the author's short fiction collection, Nouveaux Contes Cruels (New Cruel Tales). An English language version followed in June 1891 in Issue 6 of The Strand. From its first appearance, it was compared to the work of Edgar Allan Poe and it's easy to see why.  It has an ambiguous ending and shares many of the same themes, such as cruelty, torture, religion and death. Set in a prison belonging to the Spanish Inquisition, it is particularly reminiscent of The Pit and the Pendulum, and the two stories were actually combined into a single narrative in Jan Švankmajer's short animated film The Pendulum, the Pit and Hope. The portrayal of the main character, a Jewish Rabbi named Aser Abarbanel, is stereotypical, but the writing is of such a high standard in other ways, that it's worth overlooking this flaw.         As for the author, he was born to a distinguished aristocratic family in 1838. He wrote in a romantic style, usually in the horror and mystery genres, and became fairly well-known in his day, but struggled financially in his later years. He died of stomach cancer in 1889. The Torture by Hope is an excellent example of his writing prowess, and our adaptation features music by Kevin MacLeod and our usual immersive soundscape. Now, screw your courage to the sticking place and journey back with us to a time of torture, terror and religious intolerance.

Episode #129: Andrea Passeri and Hunter Marsten co-authored an article which looks at Myanmar's quest for a non-aligned foreign policy, and that is the subject of this podcast discussion. In 2011-12, following many years of military rule, the Thein Sein administration moved quickly to gain both domestic and international legitimacy. It instituted economic and political reforms, allowing the NLD, who had boycotted the elections, back into the political mainstream. From the military junta's previous negative-neutral foreign policy, the new government began shifting to a positive and active policy of non-alignment. There was a tangible feeling of openness and hope taking root. With Aung Sang Suu Kyi's ascendence in the years that followed, this more outward-looking foreign policy continued; Passeri and Marsten consider this a high-water mark for Myanmar in terms of a policy of positive neutrality. However, things started to turn in 2016, when the Rohyinga crisis played out on a worldwide stage. As a result, sanctions once again began to be imposed on the country. Aung Sang Suu Kyi's apologist stance towards the military turned off once-enthusiastic international supporters; foreign aid and investment dried up, and the country once again became more inward-looking. So as Myanmar's international legitimacy dissolved, the pendulum began swinging back towards negative neutralism. The authors emphasize the role that self-reliance plays in the ability to successfully enact both positive non-alignment and negative neutralist policies. It is, in fact, quite a challenge for small countries like Myanmar either way, because they are most often not self-reliant enough to “go it alone.” So while Myanmar may never have fully realized a goal of positive non-alignment, it has never really been able to fully realize negative neutralism, either.  Today, with few countries willing to countenance the Tatmadaw's violent and repressive rule, Myanmar is a pariah nation internationally and has become increasingly aligned with the authoritarian Great Powers, China and Russia. However, Marsten remains optimistic about the future because he believes that the younger generation has learned the lessons it needs to have learned to ultimately gain power and realize those goals.

Beer and Conversation with Pigweed and Crowhill

As part of their ongoing and popular "shortcut to the classics" series, Pigweed and Crowhill, with special guest Longinus, review Tell Tale Heart IPA, then discuss Poe's life and works, including his connection to Baltimore, Maryland. They review several Poe short stories and poems, including The Fall of the House of Usher, The Pit and the Pendulum, The Tell-Tale Heart, The Cask of Amontillado, and The Raven. For each story, the boys give a brief review of the basic details, then delve into some interpretation and commentary. The stories play off common horrors: being buried alive, tortured, crushed to death, betrayed by a friend, falling into madness, your dead body carved to pieces, and losing the love of your life. Poe uses them all perfectly, creating suspense and horror out of common experiences, echoing normal human reactions, but in a unique and frightening way.

I wanted to try it again now, and see how my approach has changed and hopefully improved. It's actually quite difficult to perform Poe aloud. I mean, he's talking about such outrageous stuff, it's really easy to overdo it. In today's reading, I try to make it as conversational and natural as possible, while still remaining true to the author's original intent. Poe actually wrote the stories with the intention for them to be read aloud. 1800s-style. There are a million different ways to approach this text. I hope this one works for you. This episode is brought to you by InsideTracker and Pendulum.Autoimmune diseases are an increasing issue in our country, with over 80 million Americans dealing with some form or another. Type 1 diabetes, Hashimoto's, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, colitis, and Crohn's disease are just some of the more than 70 identified forms of autoimmunity that leave people feeling sick, lost, and powerless. Conventional treatment for autoimmune conditions gives little hope to those who are suffering because conventional medicine treats these diseases as lifelong illnesses that often require medication to manage symptoms. Through the lens of Functional Medicine, though, we're able to see things differently; we're able to see there are many underlying factors that contribute to autoimmune disease that can vary from person to person even for the same disease.Food, of course, plays a huge role in how our immune system functions. I'm not talking about “immune-boosting” foods to avoid a cold; I'm talking about the molecular makeup of foods that can exacerbate your condition due to the immune response they elicit. I'm also talking about anti-inflammatory foods that provide the right nutritional ingredients for healing. On today's mini-episode, Dhru has a fascinating talk with Dr. Elroy Vojdani about leveraging food choices on an extremely personalized level to treat autoimmunity. Dr. Vojdani is the founder of Regenera Medical, a boutique Functional Medicine practice in Los Angeles, California.
