Grace & Grit Podcast: Helping Women Everywhere Live Happier, Healthier and More Fit Lives

We are all building a case for something every single day. The question is whether you are building a case for what you are capable of, or a case for why you cannot. In this episode I name the ways we argue for our own limitations, often with impressive precision. We have evidence. We have history. We have a courtroom's worth of justification for why change is not available to us. I also speak to the label trap, the way certain words or diagnoses can become the closing argument in a case for brokenness rather than the door that opens inquiry. I have coached women navigating cancer, Parkinson's, and ALS, and I would not have been doing that work if I believed a diagnosis was the final word on what someone was capable of. You can argue for your possibility or your limitations. You cannot do both at the same time. This episode challenges you to choose which case is worth building. Ready to go deeper? I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me.     ACU Endorsed Charities -------------------------------------------------------- Pre-Born! In this week's episode, I sat down with the absolutely brilliant London-based author, poet, and songwriter Joshua Luke Smith to discuss his new book, This Is The Main Event: Finding Contentment in the Life You Have. I wanted to chat with Joshua about how we can anchor ourselves in the present moment, overcome the spiritual numbness of modern life, and reconnect with the quiet presence of God in our everyday experiences. From performing on massive stages to running poetry workshops in UK prisons, Joshua shares how leaning into our humanity, embracing our pain through lament, and paying attention to the "ordinary" moments around us can transform our relationship with God and help us realize that the life we long for is already hidden right in front of us.Highlights from this episode include:This Is The Main Event: Joshua breaks down the inspiration behind his new book, sharing how a family mantra turned into a practical, four-stage journey (Invitation, Lamentation, Consecration, and Adoration) toward finding true contentment. The Speed of Love: Exploring the power of slowing down in a fast-paced world. Josh shares simple, intentional habits, from walking slowly to carving out 4 minutes and 44 seconds of daily silence, to hear the actual "sound of your soul."The True Myth & The Power of Story: A deep conversation on why modern culture is hungering for narrative again. We discuss how the Gospel serves as the "true myth" that anchors our isolated, individual lives into something transcendent and shared.Form Finds the Feeling in UK Prisons: Joshua reflects on his work facilitating poetry workshops with offenders. He shares moving stories of how using structure and the Psalms helps men excavate their souls, name their grief, and discover deep repentance.A Closing Blessing: Joshua finishes the episode by sharing a powerful, spoken-word blessing straight from his book to remind us that grace can make broken things repairable.More About Joshua Luke Smith: Joshua is a community builder and podcaster, as well as a poet, author, and songwriter. He's the founder of Orphan No More, a record label and creative community, and The Psalmists, a charity supporting the lives of offenders through creative expression. He's been featured in Complex Magazine, BBC 1XTRA, BBC 6 Music, Premier Radio, UCB Radio, Wordplay, and many other outlets. Joshua has given a TEDx Talk, tours extensively, and speaks internationally on the subjects of spiritual formation and creativity.Connect with Joshua:Book: This Is The Main Event: Finding Contentment in the Life You HaveAmazon UK Linkhttps://www.amazon.co.uk/This-Main-Event-Discovering-Life/dp/191176408X?tag=linkfiregen&ie=UTF8&linkCode=as2&ascsubtag=586b4e59694a42e2717b560ef1bab802&ref=dmm_acq_soc_gb_u_lfire_lp_x_586b4e59694a42e2717b560ef1bab802HarperCollins Linkhttps://www.harpercollins.com/pages/this-is-the-main-eventWebsite & Socials: joshualukesmith.com | @JoshuaLukeSmithFollow For All The Saints on social media for updates and inspiring content:www.instagram.com/forallthesaintspodhttps://www.facebook.com/forallthesaintspod/For All The Saints episodes are released every Monday on YouTube, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and more:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVDUQg_qZIU&list=UULFFf7vzrJ2LNWmp1Kl-c6K9Qhttps://open.spotify.com/show/3j64txm9qbGVVZOM48P4HS?si=bb31d048e05141f2https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/for-all-the-saints/id1703815271If you have feedback or any suggestions for topics or guests, connect with Ben & Sean via hello@forallthesaints.org or DM on InstagramConversations to Refresh Your Faith.

The sermon explores the essential role of the Holy Spirit in the believer's salvation and daily Christian walk. Drawing primarily from Romans 8 and John 14, it explains that the Spirit dwells within believers to provide comfort, guide them into truth, and intercede for their weaknesses. The message emphasizes that eternal security is guaranteed by God's promise rather than human effort, highlighting the Trinity's unified work in redeeming humanity. It contrasts the insufficiency of human works with the sufficiency of Christ's sacrifice and the Spirit's ongoing ministry. Ultimately, the teaching encourages listeners to rely on this divine presence for strength and assurance of their eternal destiny.

In this episode, Dr. K unpacks the growing phenomenon of "femcels" and the hidden traps of modern dating. Reacting to a viewer struggling with anxious attachment and limerence, he explains why setting impossible "romcom" standards destroys real-world connection and breaks down the psychological danger of feeding your mind a toxic internet diet. What to expect in this episode: The Myth of "Happily Ever After": Why finding a "soulmate" isn't the finish line, but merely the "seed" that requires years of active cultivation to actually grow into a healthy relationship. Fantasy vs. Reality: How anxious attachment and limerence cause people to fall in love with an idealized projection rather than a flawed, real human being, making it impossible for ordinary partners to measure up. The "Diet of the Mind": Why obsessively consuming "pinkpilled" content, toxic relationship advice, or deep dives into romantic tropes acts as highly processed junk food for your brain, fundamentally altering how you perceive love. Algorithm-Driven Loneliness: Understanding the internet's intense selection bias—why people in happy relationships aren't the ones posting on venting forums, which allows the algorithm to feed you an artificially negative view of the dating pool. The Psychology of Limerence: A deep dive into how childhood dynamics—such as having withholding parents but experiencing one perfect moment of care from a distant third party—create a lifelong, doomed search for a flawless romantic savior. Translating Love: Why relationships often fail not from a lack of care, but from a "communication gap" where partners fail to understand the specific "packages" (like gifts, physical touch, or acts of service) in which the other person has been taught to give and receive affection. If eating has become a source of fear because of digestive symptoms, you're not alone. For many people living with IBS, IBD, and other GI conditions, repeated eating-related symptom flares create powerful food–symptom associations that make avoiding certain foods feel like the safest choice. Over time, however, this understandable protective response can become restrictive, limiting nutrition, social connection, and overall quality of life.In this episode, we're joined by digestive health and eating disorder dietitian expert, Janelle Smith, RDN, and GI psychologist Dr. Madison Simons to explore the overlap between gastrointestinal disorders, food fear, and disordered eating.Together, we explore how fear around eating develops, how healthcare providers tell the difference between healthy caution and fear that's limiting daily life, and how people can gradually rebuild confidence with eating through compassionate, evidence-based care. We also explain why working with a team—including a gastroenterologist, GI dietitian, and GI psychologist—can make all the difference in helping people feel more comfortable with food, expand their diets, and get back to living life more fully. In this episode, we discuss:Why progressively restricting foods can worsen fatigue, anxiety, nutrition, and overall quality of lifeWhy avoiding foods because of GI symptoms can be an adaptive response, your brain is trying to help you, and this isn't inherently "pathological"How the amygdala, your body's alarm system, and visceral hypersensitivity create powerful food-symptom associationsSigns that food avoidance is no longer serving you and may be driven by fearHow clinicians use open-ended conversations and screening tools to identify disordered eating and ARFID riskWhen dietary therapies like the low FODMAP diet are appropriate and when they're notLeast-restrictive nutrition strategies, including gentle food swaps and stepwise reintroductionWhich evidence-based supplements may help manage symptoms without adding unnecessary diet restrictionHow exposure ladders, "micro-dosing" feared foods, and coping strategies can reduce anticipatory anxietyWhy reframing symptoms as sensations and separating discomfort from danger is a powerful part of recoveryHow a collaborative care team can help people regain confidence, nourish their bodies, and expand their lives—not just their diets.f you or someone you love has ever felt overwhelmed by food fear because of digestive symptoms, this conversation offers reassurance, practical strategies, and hope. While some dietary changes may be appropriate to manage GI conditions, recovery is about learning to distinguish necessary restrictions from fear-driven avoidance, rebuilding trust in your body, and finding the right support so food can become a source of nourishment and enjoyment again. This episode has been sponsored by Ardelyx.Reference:Simons M, Issokson K. A thousand years ago, in the city of Samarqand, a scholar by the name of Abu al-Layth gave lessons about how to live a good life—a life that was pleasing both to God and to people. He dealt with almost every aspect of life, from how to greet people and how to eat, to how to study and debate. What's more, Abu al-Layth also explained why, linking lessons on manners to clear moral principles laid out in the Quran and the life of the Prophet. At some point, Abu al-Layth's students compiled these teachings into a book called Bustan al-‘Arifin (‘The Garden of the Knowledgeable'). Over the passing of time, its reputation grew and grew, seeing copies and translations being made from the Ottoman Empire to Aceh in what is today Indonesia. And now the book is finally available in English too. The race to build the most advanced artificial intelligence continues to dominate the headlines. On this week's On the Media, who does this new technology actually serve? Plus, how even critical media coverage can feed into the AI hype. [01:00]  Host Brooke Gladstone sits down with Cory Doctorow, journalist, activist, and author of Enshittification, on his new guide to seeing through the relentless, $16 trillion AI hype machine and understanding the technology for exactly what it is, rather than the outlandish stories told about it. [16:47] Brooke continues her conversation with Cory, and they discuss how the hype itself is keeping the AI industry afloat.  [28:47] Brooke asks Cory about his rejection of the notion that AI domination – of our jobs, our lives, our art, and more – is inevitable. Plus, they interrogate the role of the tech in a creative's life, and why AI art leaves us cold. Discover the latest economic update. Second-quarter GDP grew at a slower-than-expected annual rate of 1.5%, but much of the weakness came from temporary factors like lower inventories and reduced government spending rather than a broad slowdown in the private economy. Consumer spending remained strong, inflation continued to ease on a monthly basis, and private-sector demand was robust. While the Federal Reserve is still waiting for inflation to move closer to its 2% target before cutting rates, the underlying economic picture remains healthier than the headline GDP number suggests. Key Takeaways GDP grew 1.5% in the second quarter, below expectations. Consumer spending accelerated to 2.1%, showing continued economic resilience. Final sales to private domestic purchasers rose a strong 3.9%, highlighting solid underlying demand. Core PCE inflation eased to 0.1% for the month but remains 3.3% year-over-year, above the Fed's target. The Fed is likely to remain patient on interest rates until inflation shows more sustained improvement. The personal savings rate fell to 2.7%, its lowest level in four years, suggesting consumers are relying more on savings to maintain spending. Are you on track for financial freedom...or not? What if the goal that scares you most is the one that's most worth pursuing? Not because you're guaranteed to achieve it. But because of who you'll become in the process. In this episode, I revisit a concept I've taught for years: impossible goals. The goals that require you to grow beyond your current identity, habits, and comfort zone. Using my decade long journey of writing The Consistency Code as an example, I share why the pursuit of a meaningful goal often matters more than the outcome itself. You don't need certainty. You don't need guarantees. You just need a reason that's bigger than your fear. Ready to go deeper?
