Discover what successful women should know beyond their financial advisor, why having an advisor and being financially educated are two very different things, and why successful women need both. You'll learn about some of the limitations financial firms may face, why certain investment opportunities may never be brought to your attention, and how becoming more knowledgeable can help you ask better questions, uncover new possibilities, and take a more active role in creating your financial future and becoming the CEO of your wealth. EP217 - How to Set Up Your ELL Classroom for Back to School: A Week-by-Week Guide

    Equipping ELLs

In Episode 217 of the Equipping ELLs podcast, Beth Vaucher delivers exactly what every ELL teacher needs in the first weeks of school — a clear, focused, week-by-week guide for moving from reactive teaching to a system that actually runs. Not a perfect classroom. Not a flawless first month. A grounded, intentional system that carries both teacher and students through the rest of the year.Beth opens by naming the mistake she made herself for years — trying to do everything at once in the first week of school. Getting to know students AND assessing levels AND launching the first unit AND setting up routines AND connecting with homeroom teachers all simultaneously. The result: everything done halfway, nothing done well. The framework she offers instead is built on a simple principle she names early: sequence equals success. One focus per week. One question to answer by Friday.Week one is entirely about knowing students before teaching them. Beth gives permission to skip the full instructional launch and invest in relationship building first — because students who feel known acquire language faster, and that is not just her experience but research. For newcomers specifically she is direct and clear: your first job is not instruction. It is belonging. She walks through what Week 1 actually looks like — getting to know you activities, speaking routines established from Day 1 using topics students actually care about, and observation with a general lens. Crucially, Beth frames this through an assets approach rather than a deficit one, asking teachers to focus first on what students can already do rather than immediately cataloguing gaps.Week two shifts from general watching to intentional informal assessment — one domain per day across the week. Monday speaking, Tuesday listening, Wednesday and Thursday reading and writing. Beth cautions against redundancy with classroom assessments already happening and encourages ELL teachers to use existing data rather than adding more assessment burden. By Friday teachers should have three clearly formed groups and have made one specific connection with one homeroom teacher — one observation, one resource, one relationship started.Week three is about launching and running. Beth connects directly back to the previous episode's unit planning framework and also offers a simpler entry point for teachers who are not ready for a full unit: DM the word ROUTINES on Instagram for five simple classroom routines that create the structure without requiring a fully designed unit. The key deliverables are baseline writing samples, speaking recordings, and any documentation system that teachers will actually maintain through the year.Week four is adjust and accelerate — looking at what the system is showing and responding. Moving students between groups, adjusting scaffold complexity, identifying students who need more targeted support than the group structure provides. Beth specifically names SLIFE students and long-term ELLs as the populations most likely to surface at this point — and frames the data collected in weeks one through three as preparation for the harder conversations with admin and colleagues that will happen in October and November. The episode closes with an honest and warm invitation to the free week trial of the Equipping ELLs membership — framed not as a sales pitch but as a direct response to the moment when the framework is clear but the resources are not yet there.FREE TRIAL: equippingells.com/trial — full access for one week, no credit card required.MEMBERSHIP CODE: TAKE20OFF — 20% off Tier 3 yearly for podcast listeners.FREE ROUTINES: DM ROUTINES to @EquippingELLs on Instagram.

What causes them to make this journey, and will we ever be able to explore the Oort Cloud?   Before I get into this episode, I want to remind everyone that it's been several decades since I've been able to enjoy a bright comet in the night sky. I've seen mind blowing auroras, and witnessed a total solar eclipse with my own eyeballs. The Universe needs to deliver this bright comet for me, and it needs to do it soon.   [Editor's note: Rich here. I'm spoiled by comet Hyakutake.]   By recording this video now, I will summon it. In this live Q&A episode of The TPM Show, Doug Holt coaches several men through real relationship challenges, including separation, rebuilding trust, dating after divorce, balancing business with marriage, and navigating emotional conflict. Each conversation reveals practical ways men can reclaim leadership in their relationships without trying to control or change their partner. Doug explains why emotional safety is built through consistency, how taking ownership without blame creates trust, and why calling out "the elephant in the room" can become a turning point for connection. In this episode, Dr. Brendan McCarthy, Chief Medical Officer of Protea Medical Center, takes a closer look at estrone and why it shouldn't be treated as a simple “good” or “bad” hormone. Dr. McCarthy also discusses his own evolution in understanding estrone and why he believes good medicine requires continually questioning what we think we know. The goal isn't to tell you what decision to make. It's to give you better information so you can have a more informed conversation with your healthcare provider.

After spending the past year learning about and experiencing each seasonal celebration for myself, I'm walking you through all eight sabbats: Mabon, Samhain, Yule, Imbolc, Ostara, Beltane, Litha, and Lughnasadh. As a farm wife living in rural Illinois, so much of the Wheel feels deeply familiar: planting, growth, harvest, release, dormancy, and beginning again. It offers a framework for noticing what is happening in nature and considering how those same cycles are unfolding within our motherhood, work, creativity, relationships, identities, and personal evolution. This episode is an invitation into seasonal living, nature-based spirituality, and a more intentional relationship with time without requiring elaborate rituals or any particular spiritual identity. The brilliant Wajahat Ali, author of Go Back to Where You Came From, and playwright of The Domestic Crusaders, had me on The LeftHook to share my new book A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women: 20 Steps to Find Your Purpose and Power in a World on Fire. Watch or listen to the full discussion on how to overcome the very real and urgent threat of fascism. (Side note: In France, Marine Le Pen is campaigning for president wearing an ankle monitor, following in the footsteps of her fellow Russian asset, the convicted felon/Epstein wing-man). Trump is doing to our country what he did to the East Wing of our White House. How do we rebuild from the wreckage? That's what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about. It's for anyone tired of Steve Bannon trying to demoralize us and flood the zone with sh*t. It's about concrete steps to stay grounded and focused in a world of chaos, to align your deepest needs and dreams with a higher purpose, creating world domination for the collective good. My own journey begins with being raised on stories of the government trying to kill you, and blame you for the crime, helped by Western corruption to cover-up the torture and murder. I am of course speaking of my Ukrainian heritage and the Holodomor, Stalin's genocide famine in Ukraine. In all my years of studying my family's history and the two monsters, Hitler and Stalin, who drove that history, I look back on America's own, and see the authoritarianism that established this country. The white supremacy blood lust terrorizing Black Americans, Native Americans, mass discrimination and violence against immigrants, and the list goes on. Trump, Stephen Miller, Peter Thiel, and too many others carry on that violent legacy. That's why they're aligned with the Kremlin, which sees Ukrainians as inferior.  In Ukrainian culture, we're taught to fight for our very lives, our voice, our art, our culture, our language, because no one else will. They want to erase us, so we must do the opposite and shine, shine, shine. In Ukrainian culture, art is literally survival. The coded language of poetry preserves historical truth, our shared humanity, our courage and defiance.  Life is incredibly stubborn. Creativity is how we fortify our resilience. A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women provides 20 concrete steps for women–who are the favorite target of fascists, because they fear the fight in us–and their allies–to dream big for themselves and the kind of world we want to live in. That is how we reset the culture, overcome their darkness with our light, and gather our people to create a better world. We are the alternative to their dystopian vision for our future, a future that belongs to us.  To better get to new my new and most personal book, I put together this Q&A:  Empowerment can be a privilege. Many nonwhite women, especially immigrants, are juggling several jobs just to survive. How does this book make space for different lived experiences A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is based on my own lived experience of being raised in a Ukrainian immigrant family. My grandmothers both worked as maids to survive. So I take nothing for granted when it comes to the diversity of demands on women today. Throughout the book, I share wisdom and insights from women across history. There's also a recommended reading guide in the book, featuring an incredible list of women authors, like Mikki Kendall and trans activist Raquel Willis. I also share a troubling story about a Black mentor telling me to get a white man to join me for my pitch meetings and just sit there. I'm sad to say it did make a difference.  Planting seeds of hope and change – whether that's through launching a dream project like a film, book, business, non-profit, or some other ambitious goal – can be a grind. Does this book highlight organizations on the frontlines doing that unglamorous work in the shadows, helping us build that collective power?  Yes, absolutely! And I made sure that the blurbs (endorsements) featured at the front of the book included voices from grassroots groups, to promote their efforts to a wider audience. Julie Delaurier of Rise and Resist began as an organizer in ACT UP and helped organize Tesla Takedown and No Kings. She also organizes to track and resist ICE raids in NYC. She read the book and provided a heartfelt endorsement. So did civil rights leader Maya Wiley, President of the Leadership Conference on Civil and Human Rights, and Holley Atkinson of the grassroots group the Media and Democracy Project bringing legal challenges to the existence of Fox News. Isn't self-help ego-driven?  A Reasonable Guide is all about collective action. Individual choices produce collective action. Think of A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women as Julia Cameron's The Artist's Way meets Timothy Snyder's On Tyranny. Self-knowledge isn't the end goal here; it's the foundation for knowing where you can make an impact. It cites women across movements and their advice on how to stay creative and build power in a time of mass destruction.  But isn't this focus on the self just new age nonsense which is a slippery slope to fascism, given reports of new age online movements being breeding grounds for fascist cult recruitment? This book follows an ancient tradition of taking on an empire with the power of ideas. Ideas cannot be killed. And you cannot stop an idea whose time has come.  Know thyself was popularized by the ancient Greeks, most famously by Socrates who was a champion of women for that time. The Greeks were conquered by the sadistic and corrupt Roman Empire. A couple hundred years later, the Greeks conquered them right back through the power of self-knowledge and ideas. Greek became the dominant language of the Roman Empire. Self-knowledge is not ego. The book walks you through steps to think creatively and conquer doubt in order to build meaningful collective action.  I had to produce my film Mr. Jones myself because no one wanted it. Mr. Jones was a film to bring historical justice and truth to a massive genocide by the Kremlin, covered up for generations, including with the help of Western corruption. A former Ambassador to Ukraine called Mr. Jones Ukraine's Schindler's List. A screening was shut down in Moscow, and Memorial, Russia's once largest NGO that dared to screen it, was liquidated. There were death threats and harassment during the making of the film, but still the team and I fought on, holding on to the power of our creativity and voices. That is what A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women is about: remembering the power of your voice in a world that wants to silence you and kill you. It's also a damn good time.  I hope you will consider checking it out and pre-ordering A Reasonable Guide for Unreasonable Women, which helps build buzz in the industry and gets the word out. Thank you to everyone who has supported my work over the years. It means so much.

"Living life from a different perspective heals the past and also paves the way for the future as well." In this episode, Heather and Eddy Tony explore what it really means to heal, not by becoming someone new, but by integrating the parts of yourself you've spent years trying to outrun. This conversation challenges the idea that transformation comes from a single breakthrough or magic solution, inviting us to consider a gentler process of awareness, compassion, and daily practice. At its heart, this episode is an invitation to trust your own unfolding, soften into the process of becoming, and discover that healing comes from welcoming every part of yourself home, rather than erasing who you've been or clinging to outdated identities. What to listen for: ☑️ How we can change our identity, personality, and how we feel emotionally ☑️ There's no magic bullet for healing, but there is a process to get lasting change ☑️ Why you need to see it, feel it, balance it, and integrate it to step out of old loops   "There is no magic bullet. Where psychedelics are really great at is seeing it, increasing awareness within yourself about old patterns, loops, and behaviors." ☑️ Why everything bubbles up to the surface when it's ready to be transformed ☑️ Navigating the grief of letting go of your former identity and stepping into freedom ☑️ How to commune with the parts you're releasing with deep compassion   "The grieving dissolves and happens on its own because that part also has a home within yourself, within themselves. As opposed to extracting that part, they can integrate and soften back into wholeness." ☑️ Healing doesn't have to be heavy; oftentimes, it's in the small daily decisions ☑️ Looking for the positives inside of challenges, and how that helps us heal ☑️ Coming into full coherence and acceptance, removing the inner war   "It doesn't have to feel so heavy. So leaning into what is happening and seeing the positives that are coming out of it as well. It's about bringing the person into full coherence of what is actually going on." ☑️ Where psilocybin or psychedelics come in and how they create more freedom ☑️ Taking the tips and wisdom of our natural world and applying it to ourselves ☑️ How the intention to release and let go can change your life   Be sure to also listen to episodes 1191, 1203, and 1236 for more! We've talked about the risks. We've talked about the opportunities. We've talked about what AI could change about school, work, thinking, relationships, and even the way our kids find meaning. But eventually, every parent gets to the same question: Okay... so what do I actually do with my child? The answer isn't the same for a 7-year-old as it is for a 13-year-old. And it shouldn't be. In this final episode, I walk through how I'd introduce AI at different ages: when I'd stay close, when I'd start handing over more independence, what I'd want kids learning along the way, and what I'd protect fiercely outside of the technology. Because I don't think the answer is to hide from AI. And I don't think it's to hand our kids a powerful tool and hope they figure it out. There's a middle ground. And if we've done this series right, you should finish this episode feeling a little less like you need to predict the future... and a lot more like you know how to parent through it.

Episode OverviewOn this Pennsylvania Smallmouth Report from The Articulate Fly fly fishing podcast, host Marvin Cash checks in with Captain Brian Shumaker of Susquehanna River Guides for a mid-August conditions update on the Susquehanna River system in Central Pennsylvania. After a heavy rain event pushed the river up, Shumaker reports flows are now falling and clarity is returning, with roughly two feet of visibility on the edges and more color still out in the main current. That in-between water dictates a two-tier approach: anglers can still pound the banks with poppers where visibility holds, but need to switch to bigger, darker streamers with more flash as they move off the bank into stained water. Shumaker breaks down how he is fishing Half and Half and Clouser Minnow patterns in size two and one, in chartreuse-yellow with gold flash, black-and-olive and olive-and-orange combinations, all still fished on an intermediate line. He also covers how the return of some color has let him tighten up casting distances compared to the ultra-clear, low-water conditions from before the rain, when 40-foot+ casts were often required to avoid spooking fish. Looking ahead, Shumaker outlines open guide dates in late September and October before he heads to Texas for redfish in November.Key TakeawaysHow falling, stained water after heavy rain changes streamer color and profile choices for Susquehanna smallmouthWhy topwater poppers still produce along the bank edges even when the main current carries reduced visibilityWhen to size up to bigger, darker streamers with added flash as anglers move off the bank into off-color waterHow stained, elevated water allows for shorter, more comfortable casts compared to low, clear pre-rain conditionsWhen to book a fall smallmouth trip with Susquehanna River Guides as the guide calendar opens up in September and OctoberTechniques & Gear CoveredShumaker splits his approach along a visibility gradient: poppers worked tight to the bank where a foot and a half or so of clarity remains, and streamers as anglers move out into the murkier main current. His streamer program centers on Half and Half and Clouser Minnow patterns in size two and one, favoring darker, flashier color combinations in stained water, including chartreuse-yellow with gold flash, black-and-olive and olive-and-orange. All of these are fished on an intermediate line rather than a heavier sinking option, even as fly size and color shift with conditions. On the presentation side, he notes that reduced water clarity has shortened the casting distance needed to reach productive water, a contrast to the 40-foot+ casts required during the low, gin-clear conditions before the rain.Locations & SpeciesThis report covers the Susquehanna River system in Central Pennsylvania, where Captain Brian Shumaker guides for smallmouth bass out of Susquehanna River Guides. Conditions are transitional: the river is dropping and clearing after a heavy rain event, moving from a bony, low-water late-summer pattern toward a fresh bump with a couple of feet of edge visibility.FAQ / Key Questions AnsweredHow does falling, stained water after heavy rain change smallmouth fly selection on the Susquehanna?Brian Shumaker sizes up to bigger, darker streamers with more flash as visibility drops moving off the bank, favoring Half and Half and Clouser Minnow patterns in size two and one. Color choices lean toward chartreuse and chartreuse-yellow with gold flash, or black-and-olive and olive-and-orange combinations that show up well in off-color water. When should anglers fish topwater poppers versus switch to streamers in low-visibility conditions?Poppers still work tight along the bank, where roughly a foot and a half of visibility typically remains even in stained water. As anglers move out five feet or more from the bank and lose that visibility, Shumaker shifts to streamers, then moves back to a full topwater program once the river fully clears. How does water clarity affect casting distance for Susquehanna smallmouth?During the low, gin-clear conditions before the recent rain, Shumaker often needed anglers to make consistent 40-foot+ casts to reach fish without spooking them. With some color back in the water, he can now position anglers closer to productive water, making the cast easier without sacrificing effectiveness. What fly line does Brian Shumaker use for streamer fishing in these conditions?Shumaker fishes his streamer program on an intermediate line rather than a more aggressive sinking option, keeping the same line even as he adjusts fly size and color for changing water clarity. When is Brian Shumaker's guide calendar open for fall smallmouth trips?Shumaker has open dates in late September and more availability through October before heading to Texas in November to chase redfish. Anglers can reach him by phone or text or through the Susquehanna River Guides website to book a fall trip.Allen Rupp's East Tennessee Tying ClassesOn August 21st and 22nd, Allen is teaching three schools at Tailwaters Fly Company in Bluff City, Tennessee.Friday, August 21, 5:30-7:30 PM: Dave's NearNuff Sculpin SchoolSaturday, August 22, 9:00-11:00 AM: Dave's NearNuff Crayfish SchoolSaturday, August 22, 3:00-5:00 PM: Whitlock's Bass Bug SchoolDon't forget to use ARTICULATEFLY at check out!Related ContentS8, Ep 56 - Topwater Tactics: Captain Brian Shumaker's Pennsylvania Smallmouth ReportS8, Ep 52 - Hot Days and Night Bites: Brian Shumaker's Guide to Pennsylvania Smallmouth FishingS8, Ep 44 - The Legacy of Classic Flies: Allen Rupp's Insights on Timeless PatternsS8, Ep 43 - Smallmouth Strategies and Seasonal Shifts: Captain Brian Shumaker's Pennsylvania ReportConnect with Our GuestFollow Brian on Facebook and Instagram.Follow the ShowFollow The Articulate Fly on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and YouTube.Follow our Substack newsletter for episode updates, tips and resources.Support the ShowShop through our Amazon link to support the podcast.Join our Patreon community to support the show.If you are in the industry and need help getting unstuck, learn more about our consulting options.Subscribe & AdvertiseSubscribe to the podcast in your favorite podcast app.Think our community is a good fit for your brand? What if sleep isn't just something your body needs but a gift from God that can actually teach you something about Him? In this fascinating conversation with Brett McCracken, author of The Wisdom of Sleep, we explore why God designed us to spend nearly a third of our lives asleep, how sleep gives us a beautiful picture of grace and the gospel, and why our resistance to rest may reveal more than we realize. We also talk about dreams, Sabbath, hustle culture, and what to do when good sleep feels impossible. I walked away seeing something I do every single night in a completely new way, and I think you will, too. Remember, I'd love to connect more on Instagram, where you'll find me at @donnaajones. And don’t forget to subscribe so you don’t miss a single episode! Xo, Donna Key Takeaways: 0:02:27 - Sleep as a Gift and Theology, Not Just a Health Hack 0:07:59 - Sleep, Hustle Culture, and Spiritual Warfare 0:11:02 - Nightly Sleep as a Living Picture of the Gospel 0:15:31 - Dreams as God’s Classroom in the Night 0:23:33 - Sabbath, Limits, and Resisting the Idol of Productivity What We Talk About Why Brett wrote The Wisdom of Sleep What a "theology of sleep" actually means Why Scripture describes sleep as a gift from God The physical, mental, and emotional benefits of sleep How sleep gives us a miniature picture of the gospel Why waking up can be viewed as a picture of resurrection What science tells us about why we dream How God uses dreams throughout Scripture How to discern whether a dream might have spiritual significance Why Scripture must always be our standard for discernment The connection between sleep and Sabbath How hustle culture can keep us from receiving God's gift of rest Why accepting our limitations is an act of trust Finding hope when good sleep feels elusive Sleep as a Nightly Picture of the Gospel Brett offers a beautiful way to rethink something we normally take for granted: We lie down. Sleep requires us to stop striving and surrender control. We receive. While we sleep, restoration happens without our effort. We don't achieve the benefits of sleep—we receive them. We rise. Each morning, we wake to new life, giving us a small picture of resurrection. We remember. Sleep reminds us that we're limited, God isn't, and His grace sustains us even when we're doing absolutely nothing. That changes the way I think about going to bed! In Episode 362 of The Business Development Podcast, Kelly Kennedy sits down with three-time founder, leadership coach, keynote speaker, and author Mandy Balak for a powerful conversation about ambition, entrepreneurship, and the never-ending pursuit of more. Drawing from her new book, Chasing Enough, Mandy explores why ambition itself isn't the problem, but constantly operating from an empty tank is. Together, Kelly and Mandy discuss burnout, the growing expectations placed on entrepreneurs, the impact of AI on productivity and workload, building authentic brands in an increasingly artificial world, and why leaders need to intentionally decide what "enough" looks like before the finish line moves again. The conversation also explores Mandy's Well Resourced Method and what it takes to move from leading from empty to leading from full, while protecting the creativity, relationships, and priorities that make success worth pursuing in the first place. In an unexpectedly timely episode for Kelly and his family, the discussion challenges entrepreneurs to consider the season of life they're actually in, give themselves permission to evolve, and recognize that just because they can do more doesn't always mean they should. Episode 362 is a deeply human conversation about redefining success, stewarding ambition, and building a business and life that don't cost you everything that matters along the way.Key Takeaways: Ambition Isn't the Problem – Sustainable success means learning how to steward your ambition without sacrificing everything around you.Define What Enough Looks Like – If you never decide what “enough” means, the finish line will continue to move.Build Capacity Before You Need It – You cannot consistently create, lead and make strong decisions when you are already running on empty.Just Because You Can Doesn't Mean You Should – Strong leaders know when to say no, simplify and protect what matters most.Protect Your Creative Energy – Chasing every new idea can distract you from the priorities that actually move your business forward.Humanity Is Your Competitive Advantage – In an AI-driven world, authenticity, trust and genuine human connection are becoming more valuable than polish.Mastery Comes From Repetition – You become great by shipping imperfect work, learning from it and continuing to get the reps. There Has to Be One Before There Can Be One Hundred – Every audience, community and movement starts by serving the first person exceptionally well.Evolution Is Not Failure – Sometimes a pivot simply means you have outgrown the previous version of yourself or your business.Lead for the Season You're In – Recognize the demands of your current season and adjust your resources, expectations and priorities accordingly.Connect with Mandy BalakContinue the conversation with Mandy, learn more about the Well-Resourced Method, and explore her work on sustainable leadership and redefining success. Not every Disney castle looks like Cinderella's — and two of the most underrated Disney parks in the world are sitting in Hong Kong and Shanghai, with rides, lands, and a castle you won't find anywhere else. If your Disney bucket list stops at Orlando and Anaheim, this episode is about to expand it.Hong Kong Disneyland This smaller, single-park destination is home to Mystic Manor — a trackless dark ride tied to deep Disney lore that even longtime fans may not know. Add in World of Frozen, two Marvel attractions, and Duffy and Friends, alongside classics like Space Mountain and It's a Small World, and you've got a park worth two full days. Just plan ahead: most visitors need a visa, and language on rides is a mix of Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.Shanghai Disneyland Home to the tallest and largest Disney castle in the world — with attractions built right inside it. This newer park (opened 2016) brings state-of-the-art tech, the fan-favorite version of Pirates of the Caribbean, an entire Zootopia land you won't find anywhere else, and a Spider-Man-themed ninth land already in the works.Seeing Both Parks the Right Way Ryan and Julie break down a 12-day Adventures by Disney itinerary that hits both parks the smart way — bookending a trip through Hong Kong, Guilin, and Beijing (Terracotta Warriors, the Great Wall, Forbidden City included) with Disney days on either end.Where in the World? This week's spotlight is on a multi-generational family fresh off the Disney Treasure's Eastern Caribbean itinerary — their first Disney cruise and first cruise ever. Highlights included The Baths in Virgin Gorda, St. Thomas, and a stop at Castaway Cay.Next week: the right way to pair European countries for a trip across the pond. Curious how Hong Kong or Shanghai could fit into your next Disney trip?
