Dr. Erin Zimmerman, an evolutionary biologist turned science writer and botanical illustrator, holds an MSc in fungal population genomics and a PhD in plant molecular systematics, both from the Université de Montréal. She also completed a BSc in Plant Biology and physics at the University of Guelph. She has illustrated a number of scientific research articles, including the description of a newly discovered plant species. Zimmerman's début book is Unrooted: Botany, Motherhood, and the Fight to Save an Old Science. It is a science memoir about her adventures in natural history research and the experience of mothers in science. To learn more about Zimmerman, visit drerinzimmerman.com and on Twitter @doctorzedd. How can we stop seeing plants as simply a “green blur” and take an interest in their conservation? If you're interested in the natural world around us and how we can conserve it for the future, listen to my guest DR Erin Zimmerman Phd evolutionary biologist, science writer, botany illustrator and author of Unrooted. She argues for the need to save plant species as part of helping preserve the rich ecosystem of the planet. Her story to address two parallel losses she saw occurring that she thinks need far more attention than they get: the loss of the tools and expertise needed to find and understand new species via the underfunding of natural history research and collections, and the loss of talented female scientists as they become mothers and find that a career in research doesn't allow for their caregiving responsibilities. In the end she chose to become a science writer where she could have impact in sharing her knowledge more broadly whilst raising a family at the same time. Her book benefits people and the planet by shining a light on the dire state of plant biodiversity, the need to see plants as more than a pretty backdrop, and how people who care about plants can help, even if they don't have a background in science. She helps us be brave and to engage even when the problem is big, by realising that there are smaller ways for us all to help. It's all about balance–and in this episode we speak with botanist and writer Erin Zimmerman about choices she made in her new book Unrooted: Botany, Motherhood and the Fight to Save an Old Science. We also talk about the choices she's made as she balances motherhood and work, being an introvert and finding a writing community, pursuing her passions and finding meaningful ways to recharge. Plus how she was inspired by Charles Darwin's parenting. Erin Zimmerman is an evolutionary biologist turned science writer and essayist. She studied at the University of Guelph and at the Université de Montréal before traveling to South America to collect plant specimens, and then working at the Royal Botanic Gardens in England. In addition to her academic writing, her essays have appeared in publications including Smithsonian Magazine, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Undark, and Narratively. This is a public episode. This week on Amplify, I'm so excited to share my conversation with Erin Zimmerman, lead visibility guide and visual storyteller over at Elephant Social. Today, I'm sharing our incredible dialogue about what it looks like to show up as your biggest, boldest self, how to get those ideas that have been percolating out into the world, how weight-lifting transformed how she takes up space, and what language has to do with it.
