This show has been flagged as Clean by the host. Playing Civilization V, Part 3 Victory Types This is a good time to discuss the Victory types in Civ 5. We have talked about choosing appropriate strategies and that mostly has to do with what kind of Victory you are aiming for. Now you can change the objective as the game goes on, so if you realize you can't win your original Victory type, you can switch to another. But success is a lot easier if you make the right choices early on. Domination – To win this, you must keep possession of your own original capital, and capture everyone else's original capital. Original capital is the first city founded by each Empire. It can never be destroyed, but can be captured. Once the original capital city of an Empire is captured, another city will become the current capital, but capturing that does not count towards victory, and a current capital can be destroyed. Science – To win this, build and launch a spaceship to Alpha Centauri. To build a spaceship requires technologies at the end of the Technology tree, but you don't have to actually research every possible technology to do this. You build the parts in your various cities, and assemble them in your Capital. Once you have assembled all the parts, the spaceship will automatically launch and you win the game. Cultural – This depends on your culture compared to the other Empires, and involves the Tourism mechanic. If you attract tourists from another Empire, your culture will become more dominant over theirs. There are 6 levels for your Empire vis-a-vis the others: Unknown, Exotic, Familiar, Popular, Influential, and Dominant. These are defined by the amount of tourism you receive from an Empire compared with their own production of Culture. If the tourism you receive is at least equal to their own Culture production, you are Influential. And to get Culture victory you have to be at least Influential with every other Empire still in the game. The basic source of tourism comes from Great Works of Art, and Artifacts. Great Works of Art are produced by Great Artists, and Artifacts are dug up by your Archeologists once you discover this. Your own Culture production both defends against tourism of other Empires (i.e. your own citizens would rather enjoy your culture than travel to other Empires), and helps to produce the Great Works of Art. This victory type and the Tourism Mechanic is one of the innovations in Civ 5 , and carries over and is developed further in Civ 6. Diplomatic – To win this, you have to voted in as World Leader in the United Nations. You can gain votes in several ways. First, you can liberate the conquered capital of another Empire and return it to them. That will guarantee that they will vote for you in the United Nations. Or, and this is most common, you can ally with City-States and get their vote in the UN. Finally, if a City-State has been previously conquered by another Empire, you can liberate it and they will vote for you in the UN. Once the UN is achieved, votes take place every 20 turns, so if you fall short on one try, you can try to line up more votes for the next try, which usually means allying with a few more City-States. Time – If no one has won by the above means, the Empire with the highest score when time runs out will win. In a Standard game, that is in 2050 AD, and is turn 500. But note that turn 500 is not a turn when you can make a play. Your last chance to actually do anything is turn 499. Terrain Civilization V changed the game board from squares to hexes, which was the first big change. But another change makes terrain even more important in Civ V, and that is that you can only have one unit per tile. The giant death stacks of units that you could employ in Civ III and Civ IV are now gone. That means that any military campaign will mostly be fought on a variety of tiles. Most of this we will discuss later when we look at the military and how to fight wars, but knowing how terrain affects your units in terms of strength and mobility will be a big part of that. So first we need to know what the Terrain Types are. Of course, the other reason we need to know this is in terms of where to settle, where to farm, where to mine, and so on. And special resources are a modifier, but first we'll look at the Terrain Types by themselves. They can be analyzed in terms of their Base Production, i.e., what they will produce without any improvements such as farms and mines, Movement Cost, i.e. how many movement points it takes to move into the Tile, and Defensive Bonus, i.e. how the strength of your units is modified if they are in combat. Grassland – Base Production = 2 Food, Movement Cost = 1, and Defensive Bonus = -33% Plains – Base Production = 1 Food and 1 Production, Movement Cost = 1, and Defensive Bonus = -33% Desert – Base Production = Nothing, Movement Cost = 1, and Defensive Bonus = -33% Ocean – Base Production = 1 Food and 1 Gold, Movement Cost = 1 Lake – Base Production = 2 Food and 1 Gold , Movement Cost = 1 Tundra – Base Production = 1 Food, Movement Cost = 1 Snow – Base Production = None, Movement Cost = 1, and Defensive Bonus = -33% These basic Terrain Types can then be modified by Terrain Features, which can be stacked. For example, you could have a Plains tile with Hills and a Forest. Hills – Base Production = 0 Food and 2 Production, Movement Cost = 2, and Defensive Bonus = +25%. Note that the Base Production for Hills will be 0 Food and 2 Production regardless of the underlying Terrain Type. Forest – Base Production = 1 Food and 1 Production, Movement Cost = 2, and Defensive Bonus = +25%. Note that the Base Production for tiles with Forests will be 1 Food and 1 Production regardless of the underlying Terrain Type. But Forests can be cleared by Workers once Mining is discovered. Jungle – Production effect = -1 Production, Movement Cost = 2, and Defensive Bonus = +25%. Jungles can be cleared by Workers once Bronze Working is discovered, and should be. Mountain – Production = 0, Movement = impassable except for Air units, and for Carthaginian units once they have earned a Great General. Defensive Bonus = +25% River – Rivers run along the borders of tiles. They add +1 Gold. Attacking across a river reduces your attack strength by 20%. Crossing a river will end movement for most units unless there is a road with a bridge. Marsh – Production effect = -1 Food, Movement Cost = 2. Can be removed by workers once Masonry is discovered. If you have a Marsh tile in your city, have the workers remove the Marsh before you attempt to work the tile. Coast – These are the water tiles with relatively shallow water along the coast of a land mass. They are lighter in color than deep ocean tiles. Coast tiles can be traveled on by early water units which cannot travel on the deeper ocean tiles. Coast tiles produce one gold each. Flood plains – These tiles can be found sometimes along river banks. They produce 2 food, but can also produce disease outbreaks. Oasis – Produce +3 Food and +1 Gold. These tiles cannot be improved other than to add roads and railroads. Ice – At the top and bottom of the map are ice tiles representing the north and south poles. Airplanes can fly over these tiles, and submarines can go under them, but otherwise they are impassable Fallout – Once nuclear weapons have been discovered, you can have tiles that are covered by fallout. This will reduce food by 3, production by 3, and gold by 3. Movement cost is 2. In practice this will mean the tile produces nothing. A Worker unit can clean this up, but it will take time. So until that happens, you should look for opportunities to move your citizen into some other occupation until it is cleaned up. And you have to clean it up before building or restoring any improvements. Atoll – This tile type was added in a patch with the Polynesian DLC. It is an ocean tile that produces 1 Food and +1 Production. Movement cost is 1. Admittedly, this is a lot of detail to take in, but there are a few basic rules you might want to keep in mind. First, you don't want to settles cities where there are lots of Desert, Tundra, or Snow tiles. One or two Tundra tiles are OK if there are other positive features, like access to a luxury resource, but Desert and Snow tiles are completely useless. Again if there are lots of desirable tiles available, having one or two Desert or Snow is not problem, since in most cases you never will work all of the tiles in most cities. But look for the good tiles. Similarly, Mountain tiles are not generally useful, however if you are going for a Science victory they can be handy if you settle a city immediately adjacent to a mountain, since that will let you build an Observatory in the city. Observatories cost zero maintenance and add 50% to the science output of the city, making them very valuable. Mountains are also handy as barriers to keep away your enemies. Jungle tiles can also cause disease outbreaks, but clearing the jungle from the tile will put a stop to that. I will always clear away any jungle or Marsh tiles within my cities. Defensive bonuses are also important, but that is better covered when we get to warfare. Our garage had gotten to the point where it was scary. Yeah, it was so scary my son used to have nightmares about it. He'd wake up and realize the nightmare was real! It was so messy there really wasn't much walking space. You could crawl around, but that was even tight. See, it had been a busy year, and we really hadn't any time to clean it up. It wasn't that it was all our mess - we had been storing things for other people too. But we knew it was a mess and we felt bad about it. Every time we went out there we got discouraged and endangered. (There was no telling what was under all those piles!) Now, the mess was still there even though we knew about it. Oh, and we talked about it. But then we did something other than just walk by it and talk about it. We actually attempted to clean the garage, and it quickly got to the point where you could actually walk around in it. It looked twice the size! We approached it differently this time. We attacked it, and clean felt great! I'm Ron Hutchcraft and I want to have A Word With You today about "Attacking Your Mess." Our word for today from the Word of God comes from 2 Corinthians 7, beginning at verse 9. "Yet now I am happy, not because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us." Now, they didn't stop just feeling sorry. No, they went on. As the passage goes on it says, "Godly sorrow brings repentance..." Now, that's a key, remember that. "...that leads to salvation and leaves no regret..." Maybe I could put in there leaves no mess. "...but worldly sorrow brings death. See what this godly sorrow has produced: what earnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, what longing, what concern, what readiness to see justice done." See, these people got busy with the mess! Now, what God is saying here is sorry doesn't do it. It didn't do it in our garage. Just to be sorry about the garage didn't change anything! Oh, we'd been sorry for a long time, but the mess was still there. Look, maybe there's a spiritual mess in some corner of your life right now. And this would be a great time to be thinking about cleaning up the mess. Can you think of a sin that you've confessed over and over again only to re-sin again and again in that area? Maybe it's your temper, or something to do with your personal purity, could be sinful talk, pride, or lust, but you just can't win it. Well, it may be that you still have the mess because you've confessed but you haven't repented. It's not enough to acknowledge the sin, feel sorry about the sin and ask for help. You've got to tackle that mess! If you feel like we did when we started cleaning that garage, you might say, "Oh, this is hopeless! Where do I start on this mess?" Well, you start organizing. You start cleaning out your life. You start setting it up as if you're not going to sin like that again. You repent specifically by name for that sin. You ask God to break your heart and make you sad over it. You find someone who will hold you accountable, who knows about your battle and will ask you how it's going. You burn all the bridges to that old part of you - that wrong part of you - all those things the Devil has used to bring that sin into your life over and over again. You just don't allow yourself to get into the situations where you could even do this sin. Will you fall again? Sadly, that may very well happen. Will there be a mess in the garage again? There may be. But pick it up while it's small. Get up quickly. You attack the mess when it's small, and you start a new day clean. You don't need to acknowledge that mess again - you need to attack it. Take it from a man who finally got fed up with a mess that had been there way too long. Clean really feels good.

Spotify is using weird rules to fine and de-platform independent artists from its service — are these honest mistakes or is something more nefarious going on? Last week, Andrew's band, One Hundred Thousand, got a notice from its distributor that one song from its 2021 album was flagged for “bot activity” and that the entire album was therefore being removed from Spotify, and all other digital streaming services as a penalty. No one at Spotify appears to be concerned enough to respond to our requests for help and there is no apparent appeals process for artists who say they had nothing to do with the alleged bots. OHT is not alone. A number of independent artists are complaining that the world's largest digital streaming music platform is throttling them for “bot activity” on their catalogs, removing their music and charging them bogus penalties. Reddit is filling up with threads on the subject, and Spotify's silence is only fueling belief that this is part of the company's strategy to gradually replace independent music with A.I.-generated slop to reduce royalty payouts and bolster its profits. Please share your thoughts with us via Instagram @AtFirstListenPodcast. Subscribe so you don't miss an episode of At First Listen!

Recently, the Austin Aquarium got slapped with a rare warning from the United States Department of Agriculture for unsupervised interactions between animals and humans that went awry. The incidents themselves took place a couple of years ago, around the time that Austin's Animal Advisory Commission formed a working group to examine aquariums. And, while the commission recommended that Austin City Council pass an ordinance limiting interactions between wild animals and the public at for-profit aquariums and zoos, the measure was never adopted. Zone Busters: A Blueprint for Attacking Zone Defenses A good zone offense is built on patience, purposeful ball movement, and a commitment to attacking the defense's inherent weaknesses. Rather than relying on a single set play, effective teams employ a system of principles designed to shift the zone and create high-percentage scoring opportunities. The primary objective is to get the ball into the vulnerable middle of the defense, typically the high post or short corner, forcing multiple defenders to commit and creating advantages elsewhere. This requires crisp, quick passes from side to side to make the defense shift, followed by players intelligently flashing into the gaps. A confident playmaker in the middle who can catch, turn, and see the floor becomes the ultimate zone buster, capable of hitting a midrange shot, driving to the rim, or finding open shooters spotting up on the perimeter. Once the ball enters the middle or a gap is penetrated, the offense must capitalize by making the simple, correct read. An effective zone attack consistently generates inside-out action, where a post touch or a drive collapses the defense and leads to an open kick-out three-pointer. Furthermore, a key component often overlooked is relentless offensive rebounding; zone defenses can create predictable box-out assignments, leaving lanes for players to crash the glass and generate second-chance points, which demoralizes the defense. By combining disciplined player movement, quick ball reversals, and a commitment to getting the ball inside, a team can systematically break down any zone and turn it into a significant defensive liability. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus CA pastor warns if anti-parent bill passes they need to leave state Pastor Jack Hibbs, Founder of Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, sounded the alarm last week about a dangerous anti-parent bill in California. HIBBS: “[Democratic California Governor] Gavin Newsom and his buddies up there have crafted Assembly Bill 495. This bill 100% strips parents of their parental rights. It allows an individual to obtain this new form that comes with the bill. They can download it. They can get it mailed to them. They can go pick it up. They fill it out. “They can name a child, let's say Suzie Q. So, John goes to a school in California and says, ‘I have this form, and I am asking for Suzie Q to be put into my custody. I want to take her out of school.' “The bill does not require a background check for this man. Requires no identification, no driver's license, no nothing. There's no requirement in the bill for the school to call you to ask you if it's okay if John takes your daughter out of school. “It is literally being called by opponents of it --  I'm one of them -- the California Legislature Trafficking Bill. It is unbelievable. Go to realimpact.us. Read about it. “Four or five reprobates have written it. We're going to let you know who they are, and we're going to campaign against them.” Supporters of the controversial bill see it as a necessary response to President Donald Trump's crackdown on illegal immigration. In a so-called “fact sheet” about the proposal, Democratic Assemblywoman Celeste Rodriguez argued that the bill enables the kids of illegals to be cared for if their parents are detained or deported. However, conservatives and Christians believe the law could be used in nefarious ways, allowing non-related adults to a child to gain legal authority over the child with a single affidavit that does not require parental consent, reports Faithwire.com. The California Senate is about to vote on it. That's why Pastor Hibbs urged the thousands in his congregation to travel the 400 miles north to California's capitol on Tuesday, August 19th to speak out against it. HIBBS: “I need all of you to take August 19th off. I'm going to ask all of you to drive, bus, fly. I don't care how you get there, but I want you to meet me at the Capitol steps in Sacramento because our elected leaders are right now trying to get a bill passed that's the unthinkable. “We're looking for a minimum of 5,000 people to be there that day. Let your voice be heard. The last time we gathered up there, it was the largest gathering in 27 years in our state capitol.” Gina Gleason, director of the Real Impact ministry at Calvary Chapel Chino Hills, said,  “[Democrats] have a supermajority and Republicans are in the minority. So usually the Democrats get pretty much everything that they want unless we, as the church, as conservatives, stand up and speak up, and that's what we're trying to do with this bill. If we make enough noise, if we get enough attention, they will back off.” Pastor Hibbs said that the problem is too few Christians vote. HIBBS: “This is the California government, ladies and gentlemen, that somebody's voted them in. I think we did, maybe, by not voting. ‘Nah, I just sit that out. I'm going to get involved in that kind of stuff.' And … here we are. “Because whenever there's an evil, evil always fills a void, a vacancy. Jesus said that a man void of the Holy Spirit, the demons go search out and bring seven more demons worse than himself, inhabits the man because there was a vacancy. “Because good people don't vote in California, we've got idiots running this state, perverts.” Pastor Hibbs issued a dramatic warning. HIBBS: “If this bill passes, I'm going to ask you to leave the state of California. You're going to need to pack up, and you're going to have to get out. You got to get out. You got to run with your kids. You got to go. I would not subject my child to one second in this public school system with this new law, AB 495. “Your child's safety is number one in your life. I never thought the day would ever come when I would encourage you to leave. “As you can tell, I'm angry, and I'll die on this hill. This is the end of California. If this bill passes, your children are now subject and vulnerable to state-sanctioned kidnapping or trafficking.” Pray for the demise of AB 495.  If you live in California, tell your legislator you oppose AB 495 and attend the Tuesday, August 19th rally in Sacramento. Proverbs 21:15 says, “When justice is done, it is a joy to the righteous, but terror to evildoers.” Trump to meet with Putin in Alaska after issuing ‘very severe' tariff threat President Donald Trump announced that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin on American soil this Friday to discuss an end to the war in Ukraine, reports One America News. On Truth Social, President Trump wrote, “The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, will take place Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow.” The upcoming talks between the two world leaders follow after President Trump gave Putin a 10-12 day deadline to secure a ceasefire in Ukraine, or potentially face “very severe tariffs” and sanctions. Man avoids prison after viciously assaulting two elderly pro-lifers in Baltimore And finally, Patrick Brice, who was found guilty earlier this year of savagely beating two elderly pro-life activists in a May 2023 attack outside a Baltimore Planned Parenthood abortion mill, was only sentenced to home detention and probation last Thursday, but notably will not be required to spend a day behind bars, reports LifeSiteNews.com. On August 7, Baltimore City Circuit Judge Yvette Bryant  sentenced Brice to just one year of home detention and three years of probation for brutally attacking pro-life sidewalk counselors Mark Crosby and Dick Schaefer, who were 73 and 80 respectively at the time. Schafer and Crosby were simply praying and offering alternatives to women who were coming to kill their babies, when a Planned Parenthood “deathscort” -- a staff member or volunteer who "escorts" women past pro-lifers -- attacked them. In broad daylight, Brice, who was 28, assaulted Schafer from behind, throwing him into a planter and window. When Crosby ran to his aid, Brice hit him in the face, knocking him to the ground, sending him crashing onto the brick sidewalk, and then Brice kicked him in the head.  Tragically, Crosby suffered a fractured plate bone in his right cheek and had to have his eye orbit replaced with metal. His right eye was blinded, and he suffered a concussion. Video of the attack, which we have linked in our transcript today, released by Baltimore Police clearly shows the extreme violence of Brice's attack on Crosby and Schaefer. In February, a jury convicted Brice on two counts of second-degree assault and reckless endangerment for attacking the pro-life activists, but did not reach a verdict on the more serious charge of first-degree assault. Shockingly, in a June bench trial, Judge Bryant acquitted Brice of the first-degree assault charges on the absurd grounds that Crosby had “provoked” the defendant.  The elderly pro-lifer told Daily Wire, “Baltimore is criminal-friendly. It's not victim-friendly at all, especially if you're a senior. Judges do not like pro-lifers. They don't like us saving babies, I don't know why.” Brice also yanked off Crosby's crucifix and chain which he was wearing around his neck. Crosby said that despite the pain he endured from the attack, “My shedding blood in front of Planned Parenthood for Jesus and the babies” has actually been “a gift to me.” The “millions of babies murdered” at Planned Parenthood over the years “have shed rivers of blood.” Isaiah 59:7 describes the abortionists and the Planned Parenthood “deathscorts,” like Patrick Brice, quite well.  “Their feet rush into sin; they are swift to shed innocent blood. They pursue evil schemes; acts of violence mark their ways.” The prosecution had asked Judge Bryant for a 10-year prison sentence, urging the judge to send a message that attacking two peaceful elderly men in broad daylight for their religious or political views will not be tolerated. But Judge Bryant, who shockingly did not allow Crosby to show his wounded eye to the jury during the trial, opted to give Brice a “slap on the wrist.” Send a polite, 2-3 sentence letter to Judge Yvette Bryant objecting to her decision to acquit Patrick Brice of the first-degree assault charge and her refusal to give him any prison time at all for his violent attack on two peaceful, elderly men.  Address it to:  Judge Yvette Bryant, Cummings Courthouse, Chambers 252, 111 N.
