“O gato brasileiro (1898) é conto de Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930) no qual temos uma curiosa ponte Brasil-Inglaterra, no século XIX. É narrado por Marshall King, sobrinho do rico Lord Southerton, de quem ele esperava herdar dinheiro suficiente para sustentar seu futuro. Mas o tio era mesquinho e ele tenta acesso ao seu sustento indo visitar no solar de Greylands, o primo desconhecido Everard King, que vai se revelar um lobo em pele de cordeiro, apesar de Marshall ouvir de todos muitos elogios para seus parentes. Acontece que o narrador é também mercenário e interesseiro. O primo tinha retornado recentemente do Brasil e morava numa propriedade extensa, na qual espalhou diversos animais exóticos trazidos do país tropical para a Inglaterra. Havia pássaros, cervo, javali, tatu e, o que ele chamava de jóia da coleção, o gato brasileiro, que media três metros e meio e ele comprou na região de selva na nascente do Rio Negro. O primo se demora para apresentá-lo o exemplar e seus hábitos, pois tem imenso encanto pelo gato brasileiro. Neste conto de Conan Doyle - que não há Sherlock Holmes em ação! -, evoca igualmente a necessidade dedutiva do leitor, para descobrir os passos de vilania que vão se desenrolando na história. O que move os dois homens é o dinheiro e poder. Um texto que permite contemplar um desenlace duvidoso da natureza humana. First Story:  “Perchance to Dream” by Isobelle Carmody Anna woke knowing she had been dreaming, but as so often with dreams, to wake was to forget. Strange to remember vividly that she had dreamed, yet to have no recollection of the dream. On the rare occasion that she did remember, the minute she tried to describe it, the dream would dissolve. Pinning a dream down was like trying to catch hold of a skein of smoke. Isobelle Carmody wrote her first book, Obernewtyn, when she was 14. It was accepted by the first publisher she sent it to and since then she has written more than thirty books and many short stories, which have been translated and/or won awards including the prestigious CBC Children’s Book of the Year Award. Her most recent book is The Cloud Road, which she also illustrated. Isobelle is currently working on The Red Queen, the final book in the Obernewtyn Chronicles, and the screenplay for Greylands, on a Film Australia grant. She has also begun...
