Johannes Vermeer is one of the greatest painters in history, yet the man himself remains an enigma. But have we finally solved the mystery of one of his most famous paintings? On this episode we're joined by Andrew Graham-Dixon, one of Britain's best known art historians. In his new book Vermeer: A Life Lost and Found, he sets out a radical reappraisal of Vermeer's life, beliefs and the meaning of his paintings. He shows us an artist immersed in the religious debates of the Dutch Republic in the 17th Century, and argues that this atmosphere is key to understanding Vermeer, the man and his work. In conversation with Hannah Kaye, Graham-Dixon also shares his illuminating new interpretation of The Girl with the Pearl Earring. Graham-Dixon is one of the leading art critics and arts television presenters in the English-speaking world. He has presented numerous landmark series on art for the BBC and other broadcasters, and has a distinguished record of public service in the visual arts. For over twenty years, he published a weekly art column – first as Chief Art Critic for The Independent, and later for The Sunday Telegraph. Lara and Carey have a new reservation at SUR, and are ready to see if it passes inspection once again. But first, they discuss Carey's ultimate trigger word, Dorinda and Donna Kelce allegedly getting into it on the new “Traitors,” and a fierce San Francisco restaurant staff banding together to take down a drunk Karen and her flop boyfriend. On VPR, the cast puts their hangovers from Audrey's bday bash aside for the annual SUR staff photo shoot. Kim and Marcus confirm their on-again status, much to everyone's horror - especially Venus; Lisa introduces SUR world to Angelica, the new hostess/industry plant. Chris and Audrey ride bareback with Mary Faith at a Malibu horse farm, and Shayne reveals his gun-riddled traumatic past. Venus reels from Marcus turning the restaurant against him as AI sparks fly between Angelica and Jason. Then, Angelica arranges a pool party to get to know her new coworkers, where Natalie gags Shayne with a lesson in humility; Venus and Kim call a truce while Venus goes to war with Gabby, Marcus's lead henchwoman.Chapters:00:00:00 Mango and Lara are aligned today00:06:09 Dorinda and Donna Kelce allegedly get into it on this season of Traitors00:09:29 A drunk Karen was taken down by a San Francisco restaurant staff00:33:15 VPR RecapListen to this episode ad-free AND get access to weekly bonus episodes + video bonus episodes by joining the SUP Patreon. Back in 2013, Robin wrote a Listverse article profiling ten heartbreaking cases of unidentified people found under mysterious circumstances—Jane and John Does whose names seemed lost forever. At the time, they were buried under placeholder names like “Little Miss Panasoffkee,” “Lyle Stevik,” and “Beth Doe,” with investigators following dead-end leads and families never knowing what happened to their loved ones. But here's the incredible part: they're not mysteries anymore. Thanks to groundbreaking advances in DNA technology, forensic genealogy, and tireless cold case investigators, several of these forgotten souls have finally gotten their names back. Over this three-episode series, we'll revisit each case from Robin's original article, share the haunting details that captivated true crime followers for decades, and reveal the remarkable breakthroughs that solved them. You'll hear about Little Miss Panasoffkee, identified in October 2025 after 54 years through cutting-edge fingerprint technology; Lyle Stevik, whose identity was uncovered by genetic genealogy but remains protected by his family's wishes; Beth Doe, the brutally murdered pregnant teen who turned out to be 15-year-old Evelyn Colon; Baby Hope, identified as 4-year-old Anjelica Castillo after an anonymous tip; and the Grateful Dead fan finally named as Jason Callahan after Reddit sleuths and DNA testing brought him home. We'll also cover El Dorado Jane Doe (now known as “Kelly”), Caledonia Jane Doe (Tammy Jo Alexander), and explore which cases still remain unsolved, waiting for that one crucial breakthrough. Each episode will take you through the original mystery, the painstaking investigation, and the emotional moment when these unidentified people finally got their dignity—and their names—back.Support the Show: Patreon.com/julesandashleyPatreon.com/thetrailwentcold

"Oh! a mystery is it?" [STUD] When Charles Dickens died in 1870, The Mystery of Edwin Drood was only six chapters into its 12-chapter run. There were no sketches or outlines of what would come next, so for a century and a half, scholars have puzzled over the solution. In 1968, Colin Prestige, BSI ("Captain Jack Croker") made a bold claim: that Sherlock Holmes could have handily solved the case, in "Sherlock Holmes and Edwin Drood," which appeared in Vol. 18, No. 3 of The Baker Street Journal. It's this month's "Mr. Sherlock Holmes the theorist" episode and it's just a Trifle. If you have a question for us, please email us at trifles@ihearofsherlock.com. I am SO excited about this episode. I got to sit down with Rian Johnson to talk about Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, and honestly? This might be my favorite conversation I've had all year. Not just because it's a blast of a film (which it absolutely is), but because Rian brought so much theological depth and personal wrestling to this project. I'm always looking for that sweet spot where great storytelling meets profound questions about faith, power, community, and what it means to be human. This film? It's the jackpot. I literally told Rian I now have an excuse to show a movie I genuinely enjoy in class and call it “movie day.” You can WATCH the conversation on YouTube The Film: Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery is now streaming on Netflix. Watch it. It's spectacular. Rian Johnson is an acclaimed writer-director best known for creating the Knives Out mystery franchise, including Knives Out (2019), Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery (2022), and Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery (2025). His work is characterized by genre-bending storytelling that weaves together intricate plots with deep thematic exploration. Johnson's other notable films include Brick (2005), a neo-noir set in a high school; Looper (2012), a science fiction thriller; and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (2017). He also directed several critically acclaimed episodes of Breaking Bad, including the Emmy-winning “Ozymandias.” Raised in the evangelical church, Johnson draws on his formative religious experiences to explore themes of grace, moral complexity, and the tension between reason and faith in his work. He cites influences ranging from G.K. Chesterton's Father Brown mysteries to Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell's work on storytelling and myth. Known for his meticulous approach to storytelling—he still writes his screenplays longhand in notebooks—Johnson creates films that function as both wildly entertaining genre exercises and thoughtful examinations of contemporary moral and social questions. But here's what most church leaders get wrong: they're not all the same. Some still believe in God. Some are actively searching. Some are quietly indifferent. Some think religion is harmful. Ryan Burge & Tony Jones have conducted the first large-scale survey of American "Nones", which reveals 4 distinct categories—each requiring a different approach. The Religious Potential of the Child is not a “how-to” book, complete with lesson plans and material ideas. Instead it offers a glimpse into the religious life of the atrium, a specially prepared place for children to live out their silent request: “Help me come closer to God by myself.” Here we can see the child's spiritual capabilities and perhaps even find in our own souls the child long burdened with religious information. This book serves as a companion to the second volume, The Religious Potential of the Child 6 to 12 Years Old. First named in 1972, the Alaska Triangle stretches from Anchorage in southcentral Alaska to Juneau in the southeast panhandle to Utqiagvik (formerly Barrow) on Alaska’s northern coast. Since 1988, more than 16,000 people have vanished from this area, and every year, approximately four people go missing per every 1000 Alaska residents. This rate is twice the national average. I was surprised when I first learned how many people disappear in Alaska, but I don’t need an underground pyramid or mysterious magnetic vortices to explain the statistics. I also don’t understand the need for a triangle since people disappear throughout the state, not just in the area outlined by a geometric figure’s hypothetical lines. However, I guess a triangle conjures up the aura of the Bermuda Triangle and suggests the possibility of mysterious forces at play. Many disappearances and other mysteries in Alaska have never been solved. Planes vanish, boats disappear, UFO sightings baffle military officers, and in one instance, the population of an entire village fled their homes to escape a giant, hairy, manlike creature. Here are a few of the stories. Sources: Conger, Cristen. Why has part of the Alaska wilderness been called the Bermuda Triangle? How Stuff Works. Gough, Cody. 2019. Hey everybody! Episode 178 of the show is out. In this episode, I spoke with Thomas Hatsis. Thomas' books were recommended to me a few times and he was introduced to me through a mutual friend, Peter Boghossian. Thomas wrote two very good books that I am familiar with (as well as a number of others) called The Witches Ointment and Psychedelic Mystery Traditions. We spoke about these themes including the foundation of Western mystery traditions, their potential entheogenic roots, plant medicines, magic, witches, and a lot of other really interesting topics. Thomas is doing very good work and I trust you all will gain a lot from his wisdom.
