Alaska is a land brimming with natural resources, including gold, silver, copper, coal, oil, salmon, and crab. Still, too often, outsiders have plundered these resources, enriching themselves and leaving Alaska and Alaskans with little to show for it. Alaska has had a “boom and bust” economy since the early 1900s, and no place exemplifies this economy better than Valdez. The aggressive Alaska Syndicate was formed in 1906 with backing from J.P. Morgan and the Guggenheim family, and its initial goal was to mine copper. However, soon the syndicate wanted all Alaska had to offer, including gold, coal, and salmon. It also fought to control rail and sea transportation in Alaska, and with powerful government connections and unlimited funds, it mostly got what it wanted. It needed a railroad to transport copper from its remote Kennecott mines to the ocean, then steamships to ferry it to southern ports. The syndicate chose to construct rail tracks from Kennecott to Cordova, and when rival builders began constructing a railroad from Valdez to Alaska's interior, a violent confrontation erupted, culminating in a shootout in Keystone Canyon. Federal authorities originally claimed that surveillance footage from the night of Jeffrey Epstein's death showed no one entering his cell. But new scrutiny has emerged after analysts pointed out a strange, orange-colored shape appearing near the stairwell at 10:40 p.m.—an hour when Epstein was still alive. The Department of Justice suggested it was a corrections officer carrying linens or inmate clothing, but multiple independent experts now say the figure's movement and appearance are more consistent with an inmate in an orange jumpsuit. The ambiguous figure has reignited skepticism around the official story, raising fresh concerns about who had access to Epstein's unit that nightAdding to the suspicion, experts noted that the surveillance footage released to the public wasn't raw video as claimed—it contained visible edits, a mouse cursor on screen, and key blind spots, including the entrance to Epstein's actual cell. There's also a one-minute time skip just before midnight, a gap the DOJ hasn't adequately explained. Replacement captain William Warms steered into gale-force winds and waited 38 minutes to send a distress call, paint-gummed lifeboats refused to lower, untrained passengers broke their necks jumping in faulty life jackets, and at least 137 of the 549 aboard died before the charred hulk ran aground at Asbury Park, New Jersey, where souvenir stands sprang up around the wreck. Suspicion later fell on chief radio operator George White Rogers, the disaster's celebrated hero, whose hidden history of arson convictions, an aquarium-heater bomb built to maim a police lieutenant asking too many questions, and a double murder ended with his sudden death in Trenton State Prison — and the disappearance of his prison records.From there the episode lightens briefly with a pair of newspaper accounts of courtship by gravestone: an 1896 story from the Cincinnati Enquirer about a widower who finally bought a $50 monument for his wife of five years past — not out of grief, but to impress a wealthy widow who had called him too cheap to mark the grave — and a 1924 item from the Kansas City Star about a Kansas woman who married a widower precisely because he kept his first wife's grave so well.Next comes Dr. Robert J. The chair she sat in was unmarked, the nearest flame was a shielded pilot light five feet away, and a police constable concluded it was spontaneous human combustion, a verdict the coroner rejected. The great mystery of the gospel is not merely that God saves sinners, but that through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He has formed one new spiritual family in which every believer stands on equal ground before the Father.
