Our guest this week is our Mad Dungeon producer, the Bat Alchemist himself, Zach Cowan, a location sound recordist and video producer located in Atlanta. We talk about what season four is all about: We're making a zine of TTRPG content to use in your home games with each of our guests contributing a page or two, while continuing to utilize our ‘mad dice' improv style of word play.Andrew has his first child, working on lots of art, his job as the in-house game designer and editor at Exalted Funeral. Steve talks about the industrial music Mystic Punks adventure he wrote. He went to ShimpCon, a not-so-secret home con of Doug Kovacs (DCC, Inferno Road) where he played Dolmenwood and ran Mystic Punks. Zach has been playing Mothership, and a combat-heavy D&D 5E game. Zach will be running Tiger Wizard and family through a campaign of Brindlewood Bay.D8 Toe-Based Space WizardsArt: Tiger Wizard Words: Steve AlbertsonStory by: Andrew Bellury, Steve Albertson, Zach Cowan1. Wiggle Toe - They cast smelly spells, like stink bomb and unknown scent, by wiggling their toes. Wiggle Toe can't smell the stank, but everyone else does.2. Tough Toe - arms and legs are all big toes. They cast gravity-based crushing spells.3. Blaze Bunion - a giant foot with a head where the ankle would connect to the foot. Casts bunion, a spell that causes painful bony bumps to grow in a target's joints, making them stiff.4. Turf Toe-ny - They cast healing spells, particularly heeling, which causes sore feet to relax and become rejuvenated.5. Split Nail - Fires off adamantine toe nail projectiles that when hit causes the target's nails to painfully split in half.6. Flat-Arch Mage - Casts spells that hinder your dexterity. Being hit by any of their spells causes fallen arches, and the target becomes flat-footed.7. Crevice Pressure Witch - She shrinks to go into small places, then grows back to full size to explode them.8. Toe Jam Courier - They pilot a space mech angel to deliver jars of toe fungus to beings who think it's delicious. They have magic space cleats that: power the mech, allows them to walk on any surface regardless of gravity, and gives them a shredding force kick. This week, we're taking a meme and making the framework for a TTRPG out of it. Join us as we discuss themes and mechanics, define some terms, and just generally have a good time figuring out how we might get our own booth at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair. Here's a link to the meme in question: https://imgur.com/wkK73kR A large amount of the information I know regarding the 1893 World's Fair (the "World's Columbian Exhibition") comes from the book "The Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson. You can find more information about it on the author's website, here: https://eriklarsonbooks.com/book/the-devil-in-the-white-city/ Our website is live! Head on over to undercommontaste.com to find links to all of our social media, streaming sites, Patreon, Itch store, and Discord. In episode 120 of Game Design Unboxed: Inspiration to Publication we talk with Pete Petrusha of Imagining Games about adapting the Eisner award-winning Image comic series, CHEW, into a Forged in the Dark foodie crime drama TTRPG! They discuss several delicious topics including the concept of meeting needs and answering questions with your game designs (what's something I can play in the hallway with my friends at PAX right now?), obtaining the rights to use ALL the art from the entirety of the comic, incorporating an IP into an RPG - in this case, adapting and building within a pre-existing RPG system to make unique mechanics for the theme - winning an ENNIE award, and more. So take a breather from our clucked up world for a second and listen to some fantastic food for thought! Featuring: Pete Petrusha - Guest Danielle Reynolds - Host

TSR and Wizards of the Coast veteran Steve Winter (Steve achieved one of the longest tenures across both companies). Steve plays guitar. Steve likes Shadowdark RPG, and is also interested in Knave, Savage Worlds, and Cthulhu / horror games. Steve has a definite favorite version of D&D (he finds it elegant and intuitive). Deep character backstory doesn't equal plot armor. Sometimes we get too used to magic in games and think of it as technology… magic should be a bit fearsome and untame. Noteworthy moments of going insane in a Cthulhu game. Skyrim and Baldur's Gate 3 discussion. Steve co-wrote the scenario for the Gold Box Pool of Radiance game. Some words about Jim Ward. Early versus later days at TSR. The job that was Steve's best year at TSR. How was the work divided at TSR? Steve offers some perspective on Lorraine Williams's leadership, given that he was right there. What was it like to be at TSR and watch Magic: The Gathering explode onto the scene? Steve worked on Spellfire, TSR's response to MtG. What was it like transitioning from TSR to WotC? Star Frontiers: how it went from hard sci-fi to “D&D in space” and how employees' desire for royalties led to its creation (and ultimately to the departure of Lawrence Schick from TSR). Marvel Super Heroes RPG discussion (MSH is HUGE for Shane personally). Shane Plays Geek Talk Episode #284 - 7/28/2025 Like what you hear? Windy City Nihilism is an Urban Horror Podcast Series. We do not shy away from touchy topics and the politics of horror, mental health, games, and life as a person of targeted identities. It is summer in Chicago and once again protests have taken over the city as the people demand more care and community and less state violence and austerity cuts to public programs. Backstory. Character development. It's one of the most discussed topics in the TTRPG space. And the 3 Wise DMs were faced with the question when a friend offered to run a Call of Cthulhu one-shot for our group. This was followed by a Google Doc with twenty in-depth questions as to the character's background, motivations, loves, and fears. For a one-shot.If you've ever asked yourself the question, “is there such a thing as too much character backstory?”, then this is the episode for you!3:25 DM-Player communication: how much is the DM looking for and how much can you use in-game?4:40 The context of this question really depends on this game being a one-shot, as opposed to a continuing campaign.7:00 Will this level of prep increase the level of investment in the character?9:00 No matter how much you develop the idea of the character… you have no idea how they will play until the game starts.12:50 This question depends very much on the system that you're playing (including DM Chris' very old-school D&D way of creating his author, Thomas Albright.)19:45 Will this level of character backstory and development allow a more immersive one-shot?22:50 We might not do twenty questions… but maybe we could?26:00 The level of immersion with teasers that the Keeper of Arcane Lore is creating for this one-shot.30:05 Meeting your players where they are.34:05 Final Thoughts.
After being stabbed in the back, Trix frees themself from Faerlin and notices that Faerlin does not appear to be ensorceled. When they ask why Faerlin would stab them, he reveals that the Emperor would not have abandoned them at the outpost without reason. The pair of Adar-Kai briefly engage in hand-to-hand combat before Eight utilizes the orb to cast a deadly spell at Faerlin. Unknown to Eight, this causes a pale light to glow from the gaps in their plating. Faerlin's next attack brings Trix down, but pays dearly for his decision when Mongo joins the fray. With Faerlin defeated, Erdir teleports into the cavern. Rou seizes the opportunity to invoke his new patron and shift into his wolf form, which reveals his black fur is broken by a single white circle of fur on his left shoulder. Talbain chases after him and quickly closes the gap just before Erdir casts a spell to immobilize Rou. Eight collapses the ceiling on top of Erdir, the gaps between their plating glowing brighter, just as Cela brings Trix back to consciousness. Erdir emerges from the pile of rocks and turns his attention to Talbain, who strikes back with deadly force.Follow Dax @gmdax, Kappa @TheKappaChris, Sebastian @sebastianyue, WallE @walle132 and Wren @ThornyDryad EPISODE CREDITS: Produced by DaxOpening theme music, editing and mixing by WrenLogo Artwork design by JessieCharacter Artwork design by RiyuskiSegment music and sound effects licensed through Epidemic SoundLINKS:Be sure to follow and tag Roads Uncharted on Bluesky!

Coming to you from the depths of the ocean (equipment went wonky on us), we are talking about the Stop Killing Games movement taking place in the EU. Special guest, Captain Dave from Sparks of Interest!
In this special episode of TWIG & Botched Roll, Mike “The Birdman” is joined with Jordan from Hit Point Press. Jordan and Mike sit down and talk about a new RPG called Shift. Shift is an RPG that uses a fun and accessible system that allows an amazing fast learning curve. This game redeems the humble D4 and puts the power of narrative in everyone's hands. The pair also discuss where Shift could go in terms of academia and being used as a teaching tool. A Corpse, A Snake-Man, and Uncomfortable Questions The adventure kicks off proper-like in Mona Stanley's saloon, where Marshal Marshal runs into Morganthe necromancer over some heated words. Their attention turns to Consuela, a enigmatic halfling playing haunting music in a dark corner, before Ol' Mac D - aged and sun-addled - joins their growing circle. The evening takes a deadly turn when a man bursts through the saloon's swinging doors and collapses, dead from an apparent gunshot wound. Moments later, a snake-man gunslinger saunters in casual asyou please. When a local lawyer accuses the serpentine stranger of lawlessness, our heroes get mixed upin the confrontation, and the snake-man leaves with threats hanging in the air. Morgan, thinking quick, drags the corpse to a back room and animates it for questioning. The dead manreveals he was in the mine to the north and saw something he shouldn't have. Marshal Marshal sendsword to the local magistrate for a warrant to search the mine and arrest its owner, while the crew decidesto escort their magically silenced undead witness on the multi-day journey northward.

Send us a textYou know that news crawler that pops up in the right-hand corner of your computer screen for those of us two dumb to turn it off. Well, an article popped up that got my interest. The 15 Best TTRPGs For One-Shot SessionsMSN pulled an article from CBR that listed the 15 Best TTRPGS for One-Shot Sessions. It lists games like Crash Pandas, Alien, Mork Borg, Blades in the Dark and Dread. It also has D&D listed along with Call of Cthulhu. It's just interesting to see an article about TTRPGs dropped in a main news media feed and then to see so many independent games getting equal time as D&D is fantastic.Christina? Does this mean anything for the independent TTRPGs or am I just reading too much into it?[Kick to Christina]In other behind the scenes news Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford who until recently were the Creative Director and Game Director respectively at Wizards of the Coast have taken positions with Darrington Press. It looks like both Perkins and Crawford both left Wizards with the intent to retire, but were lured back into the business by Darrington Press.https://www.enworld.org/threads/chris-perkins-and-jeremy-crawford-join-darrington-press.713839/What does this mean for Daggerheart…and why the hell would anyone come out of retirement. I can only think of three things that could get me out of retirement, A lot of Money, a lot of power, or a lot of promises. Preferably it would be a combination of all three. And speaking of Daggerheart the reviews are, well, not encouraging. Seems to be too finicky, lots of math for no reason, and very slow combat. I haven't played it yet, so don't shoot the messenger.Christina, thoughts on Daggerheart?[Kick to Christina]What do you think it means that Perkins and Crawford joined Darrington Press? And that's it, all the news, you've already heard.
