In this episode of the Great Plains Archaeology Podcast, Carlton speaks with Phyllis Johnson and Erica Carmody about their recent open-access (no subscription required) Plains Anthropologist article, “Patriarchy Persists: Gender Inequities in Plains Anthropologist Publishing from 1954 to 2023.” Drawing on nearly seventy years of publication data, they examine persistent gender disparities in archaeological publishing, discuss why women's authorship rates have remained disproportionately low and, in some cases, declined since the early 1990s, and explore the structural factors that shape scholarly visibility and career advancement. The conversation considers what these patterns reveal about the history of Plains archaeology, how representation influences the production of archaeological knowledge, and what journals, institutions, and professional organizations can do to create a more equitable future for the discipline. Sharing Your Faith // Bobby Carmody // CDA Campus by The Heart
In Part 2, the conversation moves beyond spiritual culture and into some of the biggest questions imaginable: What are past lives? Is time really linear? Are we separate individuals, or expressions of a larger consciousness experiencing itself through billions of perspectives?Daniel and Jenn explore the nature of past life regression, Dolores Cannon's concept of imprints, symbolic versus literal experiences, the Akashic Records, starseeds, soul identity, and the possibility that many spiritual teachings are stories designed to help us understand truths that may be too large for the human mind to grasp directly.Together, they examine the tension between certainty and mystery, discuss the value and limitations of spiritual labels, and wrestle with the paradoxes that emerge when we look deeply enough into consciousness itself. Along the way, they share personal experiences from QHHT sessions, spiritual awakenings, and the moments that challenged their most deeply held beliefs.

Daniel sits down with spiritual content creator Jenn Carmody (jk ultra) to explore what happens when spiritual beliefs evolve, identities begin to crack, and certainty gives way to deeper questions.Jenn opens up about her viral rise during 2020, the 5D/New Earth content that built her platform, and why she's now publicly revisiting many of those beliefs through her 40-day challenge. Together, they dive into fear-based spirituality, the psychology of social media, spiritual narcissism, discernment, “light worker” culture, projection, shadow work, and the danger of turning spiritual ideas into fixed identities. The conversation also explores the emotional responsibility of spiritual creators, why fear spreads so easily online, and how people can become trapped inside the very belief systems that once brought them comfort. Throughout the episode, both Daniel and Jenn reflect candidly on their own journeys, mistakes, awakenings, and ongoing search for truth in a space that often rewards certainty over curiosity.

The House Judiciary Committee just dropped a 47-page report calling the National Residency Match Program a hiring monopoly that harms patients, doctors, and the public — and the surgical community is talking. In this episode, Dr. Patrick Georgoff is joined by BTK surgical education fellows Dr. Emma Burke and Dr. Agnes Prem Kumar, along with special guest Dr. Brian Carmody (aka the Sheriff of Sodium), a pediatric nephrologist and one of the sharpest analysts of medical education policy working today. Together, they break down the report's central claims: that the NRMP exercises monopolistic control over residency hiring, suppresses resident wages, and strips trainees of bargaining power — and they separate what the report gets right from where its rhetoric badly outruns its evidence. From the history of Section 207 and the antitrust lawsuit that nearly brought down academic medicine, to the real economics of GME funding, resident unionization, and what a match-free world would actually look like — this is the context you need to understand one of the most consequential debates in graduate medical education in years. Steve Palise sits down with Liam Carmody to break down the pros and cons of buying property through a self-managed super fund. They cover how SMSFs actually work from setup through to purchase, what finance looks like inside super, the differences between buying residential vs commercial, and why so many investors are shifting toward commercial property in their SMSFs right now. Liam also shares his own SMSF investment story, including what he bought, where, what it's worth now, and his plan to turn a $260K super balance into a serious portfolio through strategic buy-sell-upgrade cycles. What We CoverHow SMSFs actually work (and what they cost) Obtaining finance inside an SMSFWhy commercial is overtaking residential in SMSFs The tax stuff (not financial advice) The contract and bare trust setup Don't sacrifice property quality for a tax saving Key TakeawaysYour super fund is another bucket of money that's not yours right now anyway. The question is whether you're maximising it while you've got the time. Most people overestimate what they can do in the short term but vastly underestimate what they can do in the long term. You don't need to find a unicorn. The stuff that was yielding 6% at the time hasn't performed the way his "boring" 5% net yield asset has.If you're buying residential in super, have a clear exit plan. At some point it's never going to give you cash flow, so you'll have to sell it in retirement anyway.SMSF Disclaimer: The information provided in this video is for educational and informational purposes only and does not constitute financial, investment, legal, or taxation advice. Amy Carmody is someone that I've long admired from afar; for the way she's built her business and community, for the way she talks about the light and shade of parenting with so much candour and warmth, and for my now confirmed suspicion that the person you see on the internet is the exact same person that you'll meet in real life. She's just real. She's real about how much her first birth impacted the earlier days of her mothering journey. She's honest when it comes to recalling the lonely experience of being the first in the group to have a baby, and she won't gaslight you when it comes to answering the “how do you do it all?” question. Because hint: she doesn't even try to do it all. Here, we – you guessed it – get real on it all. Going from zero to one, going from one to two, more recently going from two to three, and how she's navigated her career alongside it. This felt so much like a chat between friends, and perhaps after listening, you might just feel like Amy is your friend too. So let's get into it. —Thanks for listening! Got a question? Director Natasha Kermani (Abraham's Boys, The Dreadful) is our guest this week and she picked a very interesting title to discuss: Stephen King's collaboration with his son Joe Hill titled Throttle. Kermani is no stranger to the work of Joe Hill, having adapted his story Abraham's Boys last year, and has some keen insights into both father and son's work, especially how both authors wrote about those very specific roles. Kermani's latest film, The Dreadful, starring Game of Thrones's Sophie Turner and Kit Harington, alongside Mrs. Carmody herself, Marcia Gay Harden, releases in a theater near you February 20th.

THANKS TO ANDREW FOR MAKING THE INTRO SONG. (soundcloud.com / andoryukesuta) @andoryukesuta A severe thunderstorm strikes Bridgton, Maine, causing a tree to crash through the lakeside home of artist David Drayton, his wife Stephanie, and their eight-year-old son, Billy. While surveying the damage the next morning, they notice a thick mist advancing over the lake. David and BIlly leave for the town with their neighbor Brent Norton to buy supplies. Along the way, they pass several military convoys. From inside the supermarket, they watch police cars speed down the street. A terrified local, Dan Miller, runs into the store and warns of a danger lurking in the mist. As a civil alert siren sounds, store managers Ollie Weeks and Bud Brown close off the supermarket, and the mist envelops the store. Soon after, a woman leaves alone to get to her children. Against David's advice, bagger Norm starts to go outside to fix the store's emergency generator, but he is grabbed by a tentacled creature and dragged into the mist. Afterwards, the survivors begin barricading the store while religious fanatic Mrs. Carmody preaches that the mist is divine punishment. Brent, skeptical of the danger, leaves the store with a group of people, never to return. David forms connections with several people in the store, including Amanda Dunfrey and Irene Reppler, two teachers who came into conflict with Carmody over her religious take on the ongoing disaster. Amanda carries a revolver in her purse and gives it to Ollie, who is a former regional shooting champion. As night falls, enormous flying insects, attracted to the lights, swarm to the store windows and are preyed on by pterodactyl-like creatures. One of the predators smashes a window, allowing both species inside. In the ensuing panic, two people are killed while another receives fatal burns while attempting to incinerate the insects. Meanwhile, Carmody is miraculously spared from an insect, which convinces her to proselytize more fervently and gain followers among the survivors. A group led by David ventures to a nearby pharmacy in search of medical supplies but is attacked by deadly spider-like creatures. Upon their return, tensions rise as Mrs. Carmody calls for sacrifices to appease the monsters, singling out a soldier named Jessup, who reveals that the mist was the result of a military experiment to find other dimensions gone wrong. He is stabbed, thrown outside and immediately killed by a monstrous creature. The next morning, Mrs. Carmody demands Billy and Amanda be sacrificed, but assistant manager Ollie shoots and kills her, returning her followers to their senses and allowing David and his group to escape the store. After Ollie and several others are killed by the creatures, David grabs his gun and drives off with the survivors. The group stops by David's house, where they see Stephanie's dead body. As the group continue their drive through the mist, they pass scenes of widespread destruction and come across a colossal creature before eventually running out of gas. With no hope left, David mercy-kills the group with the last four bullets, including Billy. David steps out of the vehicle and screams for the monsters to come and kill him. The mist begins to clear, as the U.S. Army arrives soon after to exterminate the creatures and rescue survivors. One of the survivors is the woman who left at the onset of the disaster, now safe and reunited with her children. Realizing his actions were in vain, a distraught David collapses, screaming in anguish.

Known for adapting King's works with finesse (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile), Darabont delivers a tense, claustrophobic horror film that dives deep into human nature when fear and desperation take hold.Setting the Scene: Monsters in the MistThe story begins in the small town of Bridgton, Maine, where a violent storm causes a power outage. Artist David Drayton (Thomas Jane) and his young son Billy (Nathan Gamble) venture into town for supplies, along with their neighbour Brent Norton (Andre Braugher). As a mysterious mist rolls in, trapping them and other townspeople in a supermarket, it becomes clear that terrifying, deadly creatures lurk in the fog.But the true horror emerges not from the creatures outside but from the growing paranoia, fear, and fanaticism inside the store. The group splinters as Mrs. Carmody (Marcia Gay Harden), a religious zealot, gains followers by declaring the mist an act of divine retribution. Tensions rise, and survival becomes as much about navigating human threats as it is about avoiding the nightmarish creatures. Why It Stands OutPsychological Horror Over Monsters: The Mist isn't just about creepy creatures—it's a study of how fear can turn people against each other. The tension is unrelenting, and the real danger becomes the people succumbing to fear and fanaticism. That Ending: The gut-wrenching, bleak finale remains one of the most divisive and shocking in horror film history. Deviating from King's original ending, Darabont delivers a twist so nihilistic it haunts viewers long after the credits roll.Powerful Performances: Thomas Jane shines as a desperate father trying to protect his son, while Marcia Gay Harden's Mrs. Carmody is an unsettling portrayal of religious extremism. The supporting cast, including Toby Jones and William Sadler, bring depth and authenticity to their roles.Atmosphere and Tension: The supermarket setting is a perfect microcosm of societal collapse. Claustrophobic, tense, and rife with dread, the film captures the mounting hysteria and desperation.A Dad's TakeThe Mist is a great watch for horror fans, but it's not just about monsters. It's a disturbing exploration of human nature, moral dilemmas, and the choices we make when all hope seems lost. It's a reminder that sometimes, the scariest monsters are the ones inside us.Final ThoughtsFrank Darabont's The Mist is a horror film that lingers long after viewing. It's terrifying, tragic, and thought-provoking, delivering a uniquely unsettling experience. For dads who appreciate psychological horror and impactful storytelling, it's a must-watch—just don't expect a happy ending. So, join us as we venture into the mist, dissecting the film's themes, unforgettable moments, and that notorious ending. It's Bad Dads Film Review at its darkest!
