00:00:00 - Patrick puts forth proposals for less automobile-focused cities (see more on his Twitter feed @pvwheatley) before we dive into part 1 of Ryan’s interview with UCSD Scripps Institution of Oceanography Ph.D. Student Maya Becker. She attended the UN’s climate change conference last year (COP25) and then wrote an op-ed about climate change for her local paper. We talk about how scientists can find advocacy that works for them. 00:28:52 - Getting a lot done can be aided by the right beverage. Maya is a coffee fiend and enjoys The WestBean Coffee Roasters for her local fix. Ryan got to go to a farm for beer, which lured him into trying the white IPA Barred Owl from the Brookeville Beer Farm. 00:35:12 - Since Patrick hasn’t been around for a minute we double down on the drinks segment. You’re welcome. Patrick walks Ryan through his home fermentation experiment trying to make some homemade ginger beer. You’ll have to listen in for the results. Ryan has a beer mimicking a style from across the pond with a Proper Porter from Elder Pine Brewing & Blending. 00:47:51 - Enough about policy and beverages, let’s get down to some science. Maya tells us about her research, which involves the dynamics of ice along the underside of the Ross Ice Shelf in a rapidly warming Antarctica using satellites. You can follow along generally by checking out Scripps’ Twitter (@scripps_ocean) and Instagram (@scripps_ocean) feeds. 01:17:41 - PaleoPOWs can also sit on a shelf if they’re physical and sent to us in such a way that they can be displayed. We begin with an inspired 5-star iTunes review from Jackdu24. Thanks, Jackdu24! And we then bestow a thesis upon patron Lindsay M. who has successfully defended: Paedomorphosis of Penguins: Exploring the environmental biology of childlike chicks on Antarctica’s Ross Sea. Thanks, Lindsay! If you write an op-ed or make some ginger beer, let us know so we can feature you on a future segment! More cool rewards await you if you decide to support us on our Patreon! In this week’s episode, Patrick Gerhart, another outstanding member of the Corn Nation staff,  joins Greg for the Cross Examination. If you were hoping to hear the soothing tones of Hoss Reuter, he has some family in town this weekend and therefore was unable to join us. Since Patrick is one of our Nebrasketball guys, we throw a couple wrinkles into this cross examination. But there is plenty of football talk and great memories shared. And Greg didn’t pass out from the benadryl, so that’s something (as well as a cautionary tale for all of you thinking about taking benadryl like you take ibuprofen). If you like the show, tell your friends. Tell them we’re on the PodBean app, Apple Podcasts, Google Play, and Stitcher. Subscribe, then rate and review. Welcome back, everyone! It’s good to have you. In this episode, recorded a few months ago, I talk with Patrick McDonnell, Project Manager and Service Designer in the City of Austin’s Innovation Office. As with Jessica in the previous episode, Patrick and I met as Code for America fellows in 2016. Unlike most of the people in the fellowship who had a background in technology, Patrick brought to the table years of experience in urbanism and city planning – which we explore in detail during our conversation. Like most of my conversations with Patrick even off-mic, this one is full of neat little stories and tangents. We loosely follow the course of Patrick’s career in urbanism, making stops to look at how people are prototyping new ideas in cities, how urban areas change as they grow in size and population, and why public employees should share their stories with the public through social media. Patrick tells the story better than I do, though – so let’s jump right in. - - - Since Patrick and I talked, his temporary position with the City of Austin has ended. He has moved on to a permanent position in the city of Anchorage, Alaska as a Design Strategist on the Innovation Team. Patrick, thanks again for both this conversation, and for putting me up on your couch and giving me a great tour of Austin when I visited. Anyone visiting Anchorage should definitely get in touch – nobody gives city tours like Patrick can. As we talked about, Patrick is to be found pretty much anywhere online @patrickm02l – and that includes his newest platform of choice, Anchor, where he’s broadcasting his own almost daily updates as short audio snippets. Download Anchor on the App Store, and tune into Patrick there. This episode is the last of two pilot episodes for this podcast. I’d like to share more stories of great people doing good work in the public sector – and I’d love to know what you think about it so far. If you like what you hear, please send a quick tweet to me @thisisgvmnt (that’s abbreviated to @thisisgvmnt), or an email to thisisgovernmentpodcast@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you. Once again – I’m Grayson Wright, and This is Government. Thanks for listening.

A special bonus episode is here to make up for lost time. While I was in NYC, I saw two of the best movies of 2014 and I was excited to to talk about those as well as catch up with friend and past guest Erik Childress. Since we’ve hid the mid-way point, I asked him to come on for 90 minutes to see what he feels are the best films of the year so far. We reveal our top ten picks including a shared number one choice! Since Patrick spent over three hours talking older movies with the Samuel Fuller episode, I gave him the night off but we’ll be back in two weeks together for the next official episode. Thanks for listening - Jim
