This is a Special Episode of Kindred, and we're throwing it in mid-season because we have questions! Let me explain. Recently, the federal government has been eliminating or cutting federal programs and funding in context to conservation-from protection of wildlife and forest, to clean air and water acts. This has ignited many questions about the effects that the federal government is having on not only a national level, but on state and local levels as well. So, we want to know how we can take action to support local and state governments, and non profit organizations, who are working hard to protect long standing and critical protections in support of wildlife and nature. So we have asked Patrick McDonnell, CEO and President of the non profit PennFuture to join us today to walk us through the effects that the federal government is having on a state and local level, and specifically Pennsylvania, our home state. Patrick brings over 20 years of experience on climate, clean energy and environmental issues to his role as president and CEO of PennFuture. Thanks so much to Patrick and PennFuture for jumping into this conversation and sharing your insights from your many years of experience in this field, and also sharing some great go-to's in Pennsylvania! And make sure to listen to the end. We have some extra fun facts! Lots of Love. If you think comic books and their audience resist continuity changes, you must consider the death grip comic strips have on their characters. Charlie Brown was never allowed to kick the football and was also denied a wardrobe. His life sentence was that yellow shirt. Mutts cartoonist Patrick McDonnell accepts the pressures of his medium and believes there is nirvana in its structure. However, in the case of certain characters, he knew he had to free them of their decades-long consistency. Guard Dog needed off his tether, and Doozy needed Guard Dog in her home. As Mutts reached toward its 30th anniversary, Patrick McDonnell plotted Guard Dog's freedom. Over seven weeks, the story played out in the papers and it's now collected by Abrams ComicArts in the new hardcover Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story. McDonnell saw how denying Charlie Brown satisfaction caused pain for his friend Charles M. Schulz, and he did not want that for himself. With Guard Dog released, he can tell new stories and create new missions for his characters and readers. This week on the podcast, Patrick McDonnell joins us for a Mutts celebration. We discuss why it took him so long to unite Guard Dog and Doozy. He explains the power of long-form storytelling in comic strips and the spirituality the practice of daily creating awoke in him. We found the conversation vital and are eager to share it with you. Follow Mutts on Twitter and Instagram, and sign up for the Daily Mutts strip HERE. Patrick's book, which presents this story in color for the very first time, is described this way: “The syndicated comic strip Mutts features the adventures of Mooch, the curious cat, and Earl, the ever-trusting dog. Now available, Abrams ComicsArts has published Breaking the Chain: The Guard Dog Story, a celebration and history of Guard Dog with a full color version of his newsworthy story of long-awaited freedom that has captivated readers around the world. Over the years, Guard Dog, one of the strip's most beloved characters, has played an important role in raising awareness about the cruelty of tethering and has inspired countless readers to become involved in animal welfare. Guard Dog is abandoned by his owner, left alone and suffering. Pennsylvania is the third-largest energy producer in the nation. The state generates the second-most natural gas in the country. Pennsylvania is also number three nationally in producing energy from fossil fuels. Where the state lags is energy produced by renewable energies like solar, wind and geothermal. According to an October report from the PennEnvironment Research and Policy Center, Pennsylvania ranked 50th in the country for the rate of growth of renewables, although there has been an increase in the use of renewable energies. Patrick McDonnell is the President and CEO of the environmental group PennFuture. Previously, he was the Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection. On The Spark Monday, McDonnell said Pennsylvania has a history of being a national leader in producing energy and should be again with renewables,"Going back to timber when, when we were founded. First oil well, the Drake oil well in the 1800s and then the natural gas discovery. And we've seen emissions going down. The issue is the rate at which they're going down. When you look at how our state is doing compared to how other states are doing, we've gone from in 2010, the fifth in solar development. Today we're the sixth worst in solar development. There's a lot of room for improvement. The technology is there, the economics are there. It really is matter of policy and regulation." McDonnell indicated policymakers in Pennsylvania can't be satisfied with the energy status quo. He said he jokes that Pennsylvania -- when facing decisions to provide incentives or adopt policies that would expand renewable energies respond with "nah, we're good." McDonell says there are economic benefits to transitioning to renewables but climate change has to be confronted,"Last month at the Climate Change Advisory Committee at Pennsylvania DEP, their contractor, presented data that showed where a few years ago, we thought we'd see an 8% increase in temperatures in the state. We're now going to see a 9% increase. What does that mean? It means we go from the 14 days over 90 degrees that we had this past summer to 24, 36, depending on which scenario you look at. We're looking at increasing precipitation and increasing drought because we get heavy rain events followed by nothing. And you're looking at increasing floods across the state and impacts, particularly on coasts like in Philadelphia and in Erie."Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas - Patrick McDonnell, CEO of VTX1, says the Rio Grande Valley can learn a lot from the way Chattanooga, Tennessee, embraced broadband.McDonnell was a panelist at an event hosted by Starr County Industrial Foundation that explored the potential of public-private partnerships to bridge the digital divide.McDonnell said Chattanooga leaders got the private sector to subsidize the internet service fees charged to poorer families.“The City of Chattanooga is always the poster child of the right thing to do with the internet. They were the first one gigabyte city and now they're the first 10 gigabyte city,” McDonnell said.“But the other thing they realized is that they built this huge network, but they had a lower take rate than they expected. And what they found out was that the people that most needed the services couldn't afford it. So they got all the local business leaders together and said, we need to raise money that will hold us for 10 years so that the lowest income people can pay for this. They don't have to worry about that. We take that off the plate.”During the Q&A section of the program, Rio Grande Guardian International News Service asked McDonnell if the Valley would have to adopt the same approach.“Absolutely,” said McDonnell. “I think all of us play a part. We've looked hard at our own rates and said what do we really need to provide good quality service at a reasonable cost.”McDonnell said if VTX1 can get some additional government funding it would make things easier to provide a service and maintain that service. He said that as VTX1 is a non-profit and a cooperative it is not driven by the need to make a profit.“Our goal is to say that least if we get some of the cost covered by somebody else, we can then drive our rates a little bit lower.”McDonnell said Connect Humanity is trying to raise philanthropic money to be able to come in, not just with digital literacy, but also on the payments side. And, he said VTX1 has approached Texas A&M University for help. “You know, we're just one company. But when I look around the room, there's a lot of… even though we have some impoverished areas in the Valley, we also have a lot of companies that are very wealthy and very well funded,” McDonnell said. “Everybody can step up and I think jointly we can agree to do this.”McDonnell pointed out that he is a board member of the Rio Grande Valley Partnership, the regional chamber of commerce. “One of the things we are pushing is One Region, One Voice, because we think that if we all band together, we can accomplish more. We can also drive economies of scale.”McDonnell added: “We have to make sure that all the companies step up. We feel that it's our obligation to put back a certain amount of money in the community. You can see one of the large checks back there. Today, while we're here in Starr County, we've given away three decent sized checks, putting money back into the community. We feel like we have to step up. Somebody's got to step up and say we'll go first.”To read the new stories and watch the news videos of the Rio Grande Guardian International News Service go to www.riograndeguardian.com.

What's it like to put out books with Jack Kirby and the Dalai Lama in the same year? Legendary cartoonist & artist Patrick McDonnell rejoins the show to talk about his amazing new books THE SUPER HERO'S JOURNEY (Abrams ComicArts), his collaboration with the Dalai Lama, HEART TO HEART (Harper One), and more! We get into the secret origin of The Super Hero's Journey, the joy of getting to play with the comic-book characters of his youth and remix 1960s panels & pages with his own art & story, how he made a spiritual book disguised as a Marvel comic, and why the best art is when your mind is not involved. We also talk about the making of Heart To Heart, Patrick's combination of minimal (but gorgeous) art with the Dalai Lama's words to tell a story of ecological survival, getting to meet the Dalai Lama in Dharmshala (& finding some bliss), and the struggle of drawing a cartoon version of His Holiness and his small nose. Plus we discuss the approaching 30th anniversary of his MUTTS comic-strip and how Patrick keeps finding inspiration & fun in making it, how making books and paintings allows him to flex and play with his art, the ways making a comic strip parallels making haiku, the experience of showing his paintings at a big exhibition at OSU in 2021, and how purposefulness suffuses Patrick's art & life. Since we launched our Environmental Voices podcast in early 2022 we've produced 6 podcasts featuring interviews with 22 different people fighting to protect the environment in Pennsylvania and beyond. We've heard from artists and activists, authors and attorneys. We've been able to interview some pretty well-known voices including climate scientist Michael Mann, Secretary of the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources Cindy Dunn, and acclaimed activist Bill McKibben, and we've brought some new voices to you that you may not have heard from otherwise. For our last podcast of 2022, we bring you two influential voices, each a leader in advocating for environmental protections in the Commonwealth: PennFuture's new CEO & President, Patrick McDonnell and author, activist, and Delaware River Keeper Maya van Rossum who will talk about her new book, The Green Amendment. Maya van Rossum has served as the Delaware Riverkeeper and leader for the Delaware Riverkeeper Network since 1994. She was one of the original petitioners in the landmark Robinson Township v. Commonwealth of Pennsylvania case decided by the PA Supreme Court in 2013 which strengthened environmental standing opportunities, declared unconstitutional key sections of the pro-drilling Act 13 legislation, and reinvigorated the strength of Pennsylvania Constitution's Environmental Rights Amendment. Since then she has created the Green Amendments for the Generations organization. Most recently, Disruption Books has published the second edition of her book The Green Amendment – the people's fight for a clean, safe, and healthy environment. Patrick McDonnell, the new CEO & President of PennFuture. Based in Harrisburg, Patrick brings over 20 years of experience on climate, clean energy and environmental issues to PennFuture. Prior to joining the nonprofit, he spent six years as Secretary of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, leading key initiatives like passage of the state's first carbon trading regulation, acceleration of the Commonwealth's cleanup of waterways and a new focus on environmental justice issues. He also served as President of the Environmental Council of the States, the voice of state environmental agencies nationally. For more information about PennFuture, visit pennfuture.org

Reprogram Your Brain to Destroy Laziness and Improve Focus | This episode is brought to you by BLUblox. At one point or another, we've all felt stuck in a rut with feelings of laziness and fear. During these times it can be really hard to take a step back and wonder what's happening in the body, as opposed to just the mind, but it's the link between the two that can push us through it. Neurotransmitters have some incredible power over how we function. Dopamine is responsible for craving, motivation, and pursuit. Adrenaline relates to agitation and endurance. Serotonin helps us be grateful and feel good about what we have. And acetylcholine can help us focus. This is just a snapshot of the chemical symphony happening in our bodies all the time, and we can actually leverage these inner reactions to better understand the way we react to the world around us and make positive changes. Today on The Dhru Purohit Podcast, Dhru talks to Dr. Andrew Huberman about opening the window into our neurochemistry, training the nervous system, and confronting our inner real estate. Dr. Andrew Huberman is a neuroscientist and tenured Professor in the Department of Neurobiology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He has made numerous important contributions to the fields of brain development, brain function, and neural plasticity, which is the ability of our nervous system to rewire and learn new behaviors, skills, and cognitive functioning. Dr. Huberman is a McKnight Foundation and Pew Foundation Fellow and was awarded the Cogan Award in 2017, which is given to the scientist making the largest discoveries in the study of vision. His lab's most recent work focuses on the influence of vision and respiration on human performance and brain states such as fear and courage. Work from the Huberman Laboratory at Stanford University School of Medicine has been published in top journals including Nature, Science, and Cell and has been featured in TIME, BBC, Scientific American, Discover, and other top media outlets. In this episode, we dive into: -The connection between fear, laziness, and motivation (4:56) -The difference between dopamine, adrenaline, and serotonin (17:50) -How to increase dopamine (19:12) -How to get your mind to stop racing (31:14) -An exercise to try if you are having a hard time falling asleep (35:47) -The benefits of hypnosis (38:57) -What to do if you are having trouble focusing (52:47) -Why structure is one of the best ways to create freedom (1:01:32) -How our phones are eroding our creativity, relationships, and more (1:05:52) -The importance of having times of no focus each day (1:16:39) For more on Dr. Andrew Huberman, you can follow him on Instagram @hubermanlab, and through his website http://www.hubermanlab.com/. Patrick McDonnell, Paul Tylak and Paul Woodfull join me to chat about becoming a parent and how it has changed us. We also go on to talk about interactions with celebrities such as the late Freddie Starr, Joe Elliott of Def Leppard and Eurovision winner Linda Martin. Big heads are discussed and how Vincent Kompany appears to be one of the nicest people with literally a big head. Bands with shocking names are deliberated over such as Throbbing Gristle, Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel and Severed Head and The Neck Fuckers (the latter band could not be verified as a bona fide band). We also discuss drugs and whether they have been a good or bad influence on artists and our own bad and good experiences with them; psychedelic puking and pissing in a fireplace. We also debate the best way to come down off mushrooms; either eating chocolate, having a cold shower or watching FatherTed.
In this my 100th Podarooney I chat to Paul Tylak, Patrick McDonnell and Paul Woodfull all of whom I have done double acts with. With Paul Tylak I was in The Quacksquad. From 2008: If you want to see daily comic strips in their classic form, the place I’d steer you is cartoonist Patrick McDonnell’s “Mutts.” Finely drawn, acerbic in voice yet sweet by nature, gentle in image yet often violent in humor, “Mutts” is a throwback to the earliest days of the art form, when a brick to the head meant “I love you” and the illustrations took more space than the words.

"New Arrivals" is Alaska Public Media's profiles of people who recently moved to Anchorage. Every Tuesday, we meet a New Arrival from another country, another state, or another part of Alaska. This week we meet Patrick McDonnel, 36, who moved to Anchorage from Texas. LISTEN HERE
Welcome back, everyone! It’s good to have you. In this episode, recorded a few months ago, I talk with Patrick McDonnell, Project Manager and Service Designer in the City of Austin’s Innovation Office. As with Jessica in the previous episode, Patrick and I met as Code for America fellows in 2016. Unlike most of the people in the fellowship who had a background in technology, Patrick brought to the table years of experience in urbanism and city planning – which we explore in detail during our conversation. Like most of my conversations with Patrick even off-mic, this one is full of neat little stories and tangents. We loosely follow the course of Patrick’s career in urbanism, making stops to look at how people are prototyping new ideas in cities, how urban areas change as they grow in size and population, and why public employees should share their stories with the public through social media. Patrick tells the story better than I do, though – so let’s jump right in. - - - Since Patrick and I talked, his temporary position with the City of Austin has ended. He has moved on to a permanent position in the city of Anchorage, Alaska as a Design Strategist on the Innovation Team. Patrick, thanks again for both this conversation, and for putting me up on your couch and giving me a great tour of Austin when I visited. Anyone visiting Anchorage should definitely get in touch – nobody gives city tours like Patrick can. As we talked about, Patrick is to be found pretty much anywhere online @patrickm02l – and that includes his newest platform of choice, Anchor, where he’s broadcasting his own almost daily updates as short audio snippets. Download Anchor on the App Store, and tune into Patrick there. This episode is the last of two pilot episodes for this podcast. I’d like to share more stories of great people doing good work in the public sector – and I’d love to know what you think about it so far. If you like what you hear, please send a quick tweet to me @thisisgvmnt (that’s abbreviated to @thisisgvmnt), or an email to thisisgovernmentpodcast@gmail.com. I’d love to hear from you. Once again – I’m Grayson Wright, and This is Government. Thanks for listening.
Genuinely one of the funniest people I know. I've almost crashed the car from laughing on the way to gigs with Pat McDonnell. Pat has starred in a ridiculous amount of comedies, Father Ted, Savage Eye or Naked Camera to name a few. A stall-worth of the stand-up scene in Ireland, we get into everything from North Korea to shit gigs together.
Today's Guest: Ray Billingsley, syndicated daily cartoonist, creator, "Curtis" 'Curtis' by cartoonist Ray Billingsley When I was researching my biography, Will Eisner, A Spirited Life, one of the biggest surprises for me was learning that two extremely successful daily cartoonists, Ray Billingsley of “Curtis," and Patrick McDonnell of “Mutts,” were once students of Eisner’s at the New York School of Visual Arts. Eisner spoke highly of both men, and he developed an ongoing mentor-style relationship with Billingsley, who was a very young man, just about 16, when he first took Eisner’s class. Billingsley’s strip, “Curtis,” brings a black perspective to the daily comics pages of more than 250 newspapers. It’s a steady performer recognized by the American Cancer Society for Curtis’ efforts to get his father to stop smoking. And Billingsley takes the detour from the usual story lines every December for an original Kwanzaa tale. Ray Billingsley Website • Facebook UPDATE: May 23, 2007 Curtis by Ray Billingsley The most talked about "Mr. Media Interview" to date - by far - was the one above with "Curtis" cartoonist Ray Billingsley. He hit a nerve by taking issue with book publishers who have been unwilling to produce a collection of his strip in nearly two decades. The interview led to not one but two stories on EditorandPublisher.com - including a condemnation of his remarks by the current president of the National Cartoonists Society, Rick Stromoski ("Soup to Nutz") - and a lengthy discussion on the popular web site, The Comics Curmudgeon. Billingsley isn't letting the issue die down, either, with the NCS' annual Reuben Awards just around the corner. A recent Sunday strip has generated even more controversy, this time on The Comics Journal Message Board. Read the strip and what's been written here. Or feel free to click on "Comments" below and add your thoughts here. ] Cartoonist Ray Billingsley What I find interesting is that Billingsley hasn't directly mention the name of the publisher of the vast majority of comic strip compilations - even though it's pretty obvious with whom he's so frustrated. I also wonder why no Black-oriented book publisher has stepped forward - yet. If you'd like to hear more from Billingsley on this subject - live and in person, he'll be one of the guest speakers at the Festival of Cartoon Art, Oct. 25-27, 2007, sponsored by Ohio State University's Cartoon Research Library. Fifth Container of Love: Teachers, Mentors, Guides Who are your best teachers? For many, it's our pets. Since 1994, Patrick McDonnell has shared the wisdom of Mooch the Cat and Earl the Dog in his award-winning MUTTS cartoon. Charles Schultz called MUTTS “One of the best comic strips of all time.” But did you know that Mooch and Earl also explicate the great wisdom of Eckhart Tolle and the haiku poetry of Daniel Ladinsky? Join Patrick and me as Mooch and Earl teach us a thing or two! Be sure to visit the show's Facebook page to watch them in action.
Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell joins the show to talk about getting a late start on his career as a daily strip cartoonist, how Mutts has changed in its 23 years, the evolution of his interest in animal advocacy, the overlap of comic strips and poetry, finding his Coconino County in the New Jersey suburbs, learning from Jules Feiffer's paste-ups, the greatest blurb he'll ever get, taking up painting, finding joy in collaborating (occasionally), and how the gospel of Peanuts taught him that the essence of life is love. (We also talk about what to do after you've lost a long-loved dog.) • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Strange and Unusual Mass Bird Crash Thousands of migratory birds were killed or injured after apparently mistaking a Wal-Mart parking lot, football fields and other snow-covered areas of southern Utah for bodies of water and plummeting to the ground in what one state wildlife expert called the worst mass bird crash she'd ever seen. Knock Knock... Who's there? Certainly not an gator. Or is it? A Florida woman answered a knock made by a alligator rubbing his nose against her door. Local animal control officials were called in to trap the 6 foot meat-eater. One Rich Kitty! Tommaso, a four-year-old former stray, is likely the richest feline in the world after his owner, Maria Assunta, left him an inheritance of more than 13-million dollars. Italian law says the animal can only be named beneficiary once a trustee has been named. Mutt's Creator Explains Muse Who is the driving force behind Patrick McDonnell's weekly comic strip? Any reader would know it's the animals in his life. Patrick is guesting for his fourth time. We Don't Make Mistakes? Everybody does! Our New Year's tradition is playing them back for all to hear. Don't miss the end of year outtakes. The animals are laughing at us. More this week
