Fresh from the floor of CES 2025, I grabbed about 10 minutes each with two brilliant minds in technology and innovation who shared fascinating insights about where we're headed in this AI-driven world for a fast but powerful bonus episode. Andrew Klein, who leads creative technology and innovation at PMCI (Publicis Media Content and Innovation Team), dove straight into how generative AI is becoming increasingly woven into our daily lives. Andrew Klein, SVP, PMCI at CES 2025 He painted a vivid picture of our near future, where wearable AI technology won't just sit on our desks but will travel with us through our days via glasses, earbuds, and head-mounted displays. His most striking observation? "I think we're going to have more conversations with AI, potentially, than we would with people. Especially when you think about digital communication." Klein shared fascinating insights about the emerging convergence of crypto and AI, describing a future where we'll essentially subscribe to different AIs like we currently follow social media accounts or news sources. These AI agents, running 24/7, could serve as everything from market analysts to personal companions. When our discussion turned to the critical issue of trust in AI systems, Klein highlighted how major platforms are starting to prioritize transparency by clearly identifying AI-driven interactions.   Albert Thompson, Walton Isaacson, at CES 2025 This focus on trust was echoed and expanded upon by my next guest, Albert Thompson, Managing Director of Digital Innovation at Walton Isaacson, who had just finished moderating a panel on monetization in immersive technologies. Thompson offered a profound observation that really stuck with me: "The world's currency is not technology, it's trust. And that's everywhere from political candidacy to why three ply toilet paper is better than one. ...And when you start to think about news and information, it's whom do we trust?" Thompson drew a fascinating distinction between generations: Boomers understand how things are made because they come from the Industrial Age, while Gen Z knows how nothing is made - they just want it to work. He predicts we'll return to valuing in-person verification, noting that while deepfakes can fool us online, "the one thing a deepfake can't do is walk in the room and fake you out." The episode concludes with my personal note about the Los Angeles wildfires and information about supporting affected communities, including the Grammy-winning composer of my Insider Interviews theme, John Clayton. You can find remarkable people in every corner of this planet. Many of these people have something in common. There is a spirituality about them. They seem to be motivated by the call of something greater. They seem to live their lives in the context of a bigger story. A story that precedes them, and will go on after them. They are on a path of awakening to wisdom. I met Khadra Ali in 2014. I've always been struck by the light that radiates from her face. I have also been intrigued by how she keeps traditional, religious, ways of Islam and remains so open to so much that fits outside of her tradition. I have to brag and say that Khadra was part of the original, FIRST, cohort of the Evolutionary Leadership Workshop. It is an honor and a blessing to count her among our accomplished alumni. Khadra is doing amazing things. She works with the Youth and Innovation Team at the United Nations Population Fund, and she is based in Mogadishu. She is also dreaming up an organization called “Toos,” which means: Wake Up! Khadra is part of the passionate generation of migrants, who came West as children and returned to their homelands as adults. They share the privileges they've been afforded just by living in the rich world. Khadra shares the story of leaving her motherland, and of the advice her grandmother gave her: stay true to your religion. It is a powerful charge from one's elder. And Khadra has stayed true to her grandmother's direction. While also finding ways to dive beneath what is traditional. Her authentic relationship with God keeps her tracking for the pathways to awakening. Religions of each and every ilk have managed to corrupt themselves into systems of myopia, self-righteousness, and oppression. But they still come from wisdom traditions. You can find wisdom in ancient stories. You can find healing in time-tested practices. In prayer, contemplation, meditation, acts of collective worship, and adoration. These are patterns that we find through traditions that have stood the test of time. Getting wise is not an option. It is a necessity. It is how we become good ancestors. It is how we learn to contend with life itself. It feels to me that this is what Khadra is aiming for.  Get to know her. She is a soul worth knowing. Get a sense of her light.

Jackie is the President of the Acho Group, a strategy and leadership consulting firm whose 2014 TEDx talk - A Good Day's Work Requires Empathy caught Detective Gibbons' attention. To most, this seemed like an unlikely partnership, but Acho and Gibbons got to work.rnrnThe goal was for the Police District to foster more empathy through cultural transformation and systems change from within, not training from the outside. So they created a new leadership model in District 4 and launched internal Innovation Teams, as well as the first employee engagement survey in the 160-year history of the police department. Top of the list in responses was a desire for increased community engagement, removal of tedious and repetitive paperwork, and a focus on officer mental health.rnrnThe result of the culture shift: Use of force decreased, citizen complaints were down, and officer transfers increased back into District 4. Now, three of the five districts are using the program.rnrnJoin us in-person at the City Club as we learn how to improve police response and engagement in our neighborhoods--particularly high-crime regions where empathy is most needed to de-escalate situations.

The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics

Today I am very excited to have Dr. Matt Johnson back on the show to talk about Branding That Means Business, a new book he has co-authored with Dr. Tessa Misiaszek (who will be on the show in a few weeks talking about her background and the aspects she brings to this fascinating project). Matt was on the show in 2021 talking about his other book, Blindsight (which he co-authored with Prince Guhman, who was also on the show last year.) Matt is a professor, researcher, and writer, who received his Ph.D. in Cognitive Psychology/Neuroscience from Princeton University in 2013. His focus now is on bridging the gap between science and business; to accomplish this, he works across several fields including behavioral economics, consumer neuroscience, and experiential marketing. A contributor to major news outlets including Forbes, Entrepreneur, Business Insider, and VICE, and a writer for Psychology Today, he regularly provides expert opinion and thought leadership on a range of topics related to the human side of business. He advises both start-ups and large brands and has served as an expert-in-residence to Nike's Innovation Team in Portland, Oregon. Matt is so much fun and a wealth of fascinating information. We are going to talk about so many awesome things today so you don't want to miss it.  Show Notes: [00:42] Today I am very excited to have Dr. Matt Johnson back on the show to talk about Branding That Means Business, a new book he has co-authored with Dr. Tessa Misiaszek. [02:48] Melina and Matt share the similarities in their lives.  [04:08] Matt shares his background and how he found himself in the world of neuro and behavioral science.  [05:53] His second book, Branding That Means Business is written for the business practitioner on how to build brands and how companies can create enduring brands with consumers and markets.  [08:49] One of his goals when writing a book is to write for as broad of an audience as possible within popular science, but also for very niche behavioral science readers.  [11:11] Every experience you have consuming content is potentially going to be featured in some sort of written word.  [12:22] Twitter can be an amazing resource. Incredible business minds and academics are sharing on Twitter.    [15:15] The rule of the brand is to create trust. Trust is an absolute game changer when it comes to consumer dynamics.      [17:55] When information or an advertising claim comes from a brand you trust it is much more System 1 oriented and it changes the decision-making process to be much easier and free-flowing.  [19:59] Building a brand is like building a house. The goal isn't to just build the house and structure, but ultimately to build a home that creates a positive emotional experience and a sense of warmth and belonging.   [22:39] Interactions within the brain and how you feel about it — those associations are so key.  [23:16] A brand is an element of the company. It is a tool of the company that adds unique value above and beyond the products themselves and it helps the company differentiate itself from industry competitors.   [26:36] We need to know what our brand associations are so we can change them or embrace them.   [27:46] How the brand is sculpted at the level of the brain and the consumer and how that is aggregated over the entire market can be very different.    [30:36] After research, KitKat completely changed its marketing in Japan and it had a huge impact.  [31:50] So often companies and people end up really making things so much harder for us than they have to be. If you let go and have the current take you then you can get somewhere more meaningful.  [34:28] Our job as the brand manager is not to be the guardians of the brand image but as the caretaker of it.  [36:20] Micro and nano influencers have smaller audiences, but because they are very engaged followers that can be very effective.  [38:14] Many people are willing to partner with brands that mean something to them.   [40:26] Among younger consumers there is a “learned allergy” to top-down advertising. This is one of the reasons why TikTok has been so huge with product advertising.  [43:22] Organic marketing and integrated content are becoming more and more attractive.   [46:14] If it is perceived to be a small brand the expectations are that it is going to be a brand that you really know, you could directly interact with it, and you could possibly co-create with the brand. This differs from big brands who should adopt this different strategy.  [47:59] Differentiation and consumer perception are important. It really matters to consider consumer perceptions in terms of those expectations.   [50:31] Melina shares her closing thoughts.  [52:20] Knowing what is going on in the world and finding how you can relate your brand to the current conversation is so key to using branding effectively in your business. Episode 14 - Future of Humanity: Bringing Consciousness to Commerce (with Neil Jacobs)

Host Helen Lee speaks with Neil Jacobs, CEO of Six Senses: Luxury Resorts, Hotels and Spas, who has been in the super high-end resorts and hotel industry for 40 years and now talks about a potential future of "democratising wellness" and bringing it to the people. As well as engaging in sustainability in a way that is meaningful, after further incorporating it as a culture for Six Senses which has been doing so for the last 3 decades. Among other things, Helen and Neil also discuss the idea of deliberately adopting love in business; and offering emotional hospitality to guests worldwide i.e. successfully combining commercialism with consciousness. Under Neil's leadership, Six Senses was also invited to be part of the Harvard Medical School's advisory board on "Environmental Wellness" some years ago, having made enough of an impact in the field of wellness worldwide in the last 10 years. Neil was also President of Starwood Capital Group and Senior Vice President Operations Asia Pacific for Four Seasons which constituted some 40% of the prestigious group at the time of much expansion then. He is still busy opening properties - this time for Six Senses, in spite of the pandemic, always with a focus on sustainability, wellness and human connection, and in sync with nature and all that is natural. In addition, Helen and Neil discuss the impact of the pandemic on the tourism industry, humanity in general and how people cope. KEY TAKEAWAYS Neil and his team transformed the Six Senses Group from an Asian resort group to a global hotel platform in the last ten years. The pandemic created disarray and devastation for the hospitality industry which was more impacted than others, and was especially difficult for the younger, entry-level employees who make up the bulk of its manpower. However, humanity is resilient and the level to which people have risen to the challenge of Covid has been heartwarming. There is greater awareness and degree of consciousness that has emerged from the pandemic. This represents humanity's return to self, wholeness and what's natural, a shift towards the spiritual and a deeper connection with themselves and each other . Six Senses has an extreme focus on wellness and sustainable practice, way beyond what most hotel companies would have. And those who flourish and succeed at the Group are the ones who share the same value set and together the almost-5,000 people who work there, in various properties worldwide, together create a movement committed to growing these values and really having an impact. You can create creative people through process. When countries and hotels were closed during the pandemic, Six Senses' Innovation Teams in each country dreamt up different and even more meaningful content, relevant to that country's culture, for guests for when they returned. This included arrival and departure rituals, that helped create greater connection between the hotel's host employees and guests. Humanity is moving inexorably towards a shared awakening where we will become aware of the spiritual and the invisible, the existence of universal energy and our inner selves. The Covid crisis has sped up this process. Everyone has a part to play, taking small steps, one day at a time. Both Neil and Helen agree, now is the time to drive spirituality and greater consciousness forward, with the impetus gained through Covid and in preparation for any or all challenges ahead. Demonstrating and illustrating energy in simple ways to co-create a new shift in perspective. BEST MOMENTS ‘When Covid hit it was kind of a shock to the system and everybody was saying to me “Oh, you must be going crazy, you’re not out there”. But actually, it was for me personally a very special time. It allowed me to regain control of my life and improve my health and do many of the things both physically and spiritually that perhaps I’d been away from for too long.’ - Neil ‘It was quite remarkable to notice in New York how it had slowed down, and how much nicer and more considerate people were to each other. I think that’s a global thing, I think that’s kind of a global phenomenon, that people just manage to get in touch with their humanity, empathy and compassion which fundamentally exist in all of us.’ – Neil ‘Wonderful to hear that from you, someone who has travelled all over the world pretty much all of the time, right? So it's not only a reset that you experience for yourself but also, do you see it as a reset for all of humanity?’ – Helen ‘We can touch people's hearts. We call it emotional hospitality. We never talk about Asian hospitality although we grew up in Asia. It’s about how we call our employees hosts, how they are able to connect every single day with our guests on, perhaps, a deeper level than is often the case in hospitality.’ – Neil ‘Every property has a fire ritual. Fire is special in most cultures. It talks to so many different things ; ‘out with old, in with the new’ and it can be very touching.’ – Neil ‘To find a solution that can’t be exactly the same but makes wellness, perhaps to a lesser extent sustainability because everyone can engage in that, more accessible to a wider group of consumers is forefront in my mind. As to how to do that, do we create another brand? There’s lots of ways to go about it.’ – Neil ‘What about your expertise and experience in consciously creating cultures? That’s an asset and expertise you can lend lots of people all over the world, right? Either within the tourism industry or beyond. What would you do with that?’ – Helen 'It also needs thought leaders and that's where you fit.' - Neil to Helen ‘Meditation can also lead nowhere for some. To me, it's not just about sitting down and going inward. Going inward to what end? Again, it has to be intentional. The simple, so-called strategy, is to be in alignment with the highest aspects of who we are, to tap into what’s already there that we are not utilising. It's a very practical thing.' – Helen ABOUT THE GUEST Neil Jacobs has been in the super high-end hotel industry for the last 40 years and is still going strong, busy opening beautiful hotels, resorts and spas for Six Senses Group which he has been CEO of, for the last ten years. He was previously President of Starwood Capital Group as well as Senior Vice President Operations Asia Pacific for Four Seasons, which was then about 40% of Four Seasons. And for me, that's kind of what goes on in the building.  And then at the top layer, it's how the people interact with the building.  - David The whole notion of getting back to work and bringing people safely back to work, first of all, but also having them productive in the offices - Fanie The amount of data that building provides is like, you cannot comprehend how much data it gives. - Fanie The pandemic, I don't think has actually changed any trends. I genuinely don't think it has, but what it's done is it has accelerated trends that we were already seeing in the industry. - David What's really exciting is when you're working with companies that aren't aware of how digital technologies can help them, how they can make the buildings better for the humans that work in them and look after them. - David Find your niche find something that enthuses you really makes you want to make a change. - David   Keywords: smart buildings, facilities management, service management,    About Our Guests:   David Williams https://www.linkedin.com/in/david-williams-9559641/  David has worked for Microsoft since 2005 and has been part of an internal Innovation Team since December 2014.
