When Indigenous lawyer Jasmine takes her mother Della on an historical tour of the UK's most revered literary sites, Jasmine hopes it will heal old wounds and help them reconcile their past. While Jasmine immerses herself in her literary idols, Della rediscovers the wisdom of her own culture and storytelling. As both women grapple with their place in others' lives, a powerful reminder of a mysterious family tragedy, buried in their past, propels old secrets to the surface. In this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Larissa Behrendt about the joy of fiction, her journey to the top echelons of the law and academia, and the bright future of Indigenous storytelling.
This episode is one of two classroom interviews with 11th grade students at Shalhevet high school in Los Angeles, CA. As part of the Exploring Black Narratives program, we studied Dominique Morisseau's play "Pipeline" and interviewed actors who starred in productions around the US. Today's interview is with Heather Velazquez who played Jasmine at the world-premiere production of "Pipeline" in 2017 at Lincoln Center Theatre in New York.Pipeline centers on a public high school teacher named Nya whose own teenage son, Omari, attends a private boarding school. Omari and his girlfriend Jasmine are among the only students of color at their school. When we meet them, Omari is about to leave school. He has been suspended after an incident in class in which his white teacher singled him out repeatedly as a Black student and Omari physically pushed back. Jasmine is understandably worried about the consequences for Omari. And because she’s in love with him, her desire to shield him is wrapped up in her need to keep him around. While Jasmine and Omari’s relationship is intense, Jasmine’s presence onstage is filled with humor. She’s tough-talking but uncertain. And though she’s onstage only a short amount of time, she’s an unforgettable character. If you'd like to learn more about Exploring Black Narratives, here is an article about the program that I wrote for American Theatre magazine: https://www.americantheatre.org/2021/03/19/the-familiar-and-the-new-teaching-black-plays-in-jewish-high-schools/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

074 | Jasmine Star shares how to out write & out shine anyone! Jasmine Star is a photographer and business strategist from Newport Beach, California. She dropped out of law school to pursue her dreams of being a photographer. In less than three years, she built an internationally recognized and award-winning business. In addition to growing her business, Jasmine began consulting with business owners on how they could use social media to build a brand and grow their businesses. What goals or dreams do you have brewing in your subconscious that you never allow to come to the surface because you’re terrified of failure? I’m willing to go out on a limb, and guess that there are quite a few of you who have brilliant ideas that you’ve never spoken out loud because of this fear. I get it! I’ve been there, and so has this week’s guest, Jasmine Star. Jasmine dropped out of law school to pursue photography, and had absolutely NO experience. However, she knew she was miserable in law school, and knew that photography made her happy, so remaining in law school was not an option. Later on in her business, after learning that half of her team was working for a competitor, that was creating an almost identical product to what Jasmin was working on, Jasmine thought she was done and ready to close up shop. This left her devastated, and she had NO idea how to keep going. A pep talk from her husband and business partner, and a deep tissue massage in Koreatown in NYC, helped her see that everything was going to be okay. She stopped fearing failure and decided to tackle a new project, which has led to the success Jasmine has now experienced. If you’ve ever put your dreams on hold because you’re afraid you might fail, this episode of Success Unfiltered is a MUST LISTEN! Here are a few key secrets we talked about in this episode: Michelle introduces Jasmine Star. Jasmine shares a quick overview of who she is and what she does. The longer you’re in business the tougher the NO’s get, as there’s more on the line, but the most crushing NO in Jasmine’s career happened her first year in business. In order to create a life of freedom Jasmine decided to become a photographer, her first NO was given to her by parishioners of her father’s church. She shares the full story! “The worst day as an aspiring entrepreneur is better than a day working for somebody else.” ~ Jasmine Star Jasmine shares three things she learned from hearing her very first NO. In May of 2017, Jasmine was working with her team in NYC on the verge of a huge launch. While Jasmine had been working to launch her product, three of her team members had been working with a competitor, helping them to launch a similar product. This led to Jasmine’s most devastating NO, which also ended up being the best thing. Jasmine shares a few red flags she should have noticed when some of her team was working for the competitor. Back in 2007, Jasmine received her most accomplished NO. The NO that led to the turning point in her life. This NO, led to Jasmine realizing she was a strong and powerful business owner who would excel at anything she put her mind to. “Every time you do something different or great, you get negativity.” ~ Jasmine Star People will always have opinions, it is up to us to determine whether there is any truth to those opinions. When you see that kernel of truth, you have to determine what you can do to fix that truth - then nothing can stop you. Jasmine knows that she will outwrite, out video, and out shine because she just keeps working and never gives up. Jasmine shares what she would tell her younger self at different iterations of her life. Connect with Jasmine Star: Jasmine’s Website Facebook Instagram Twitter P.S. Digital Sandwich starts playing Dungeons and Dragons. Well not live, but we recap what happened in this podcast. Nick plays an Orc who is a little dumb and gay (not dumb cause he's gay, but just dumb as in not well educated). Then Nick talks about his experience using a women's bathroom at a gas station. Quinn tells us about the horrible fires happening in his state of California. While Jasmine complains about working to much. However after Quinn talks about the fires destroying homes, Jasmine just comes across a little whiny.
