Death Valley Girls - "When I'm Free," a 2022 single on Suicide Squeeze. Earlier this year, Seattle's Suicide Squeeze Records released a split single featuring two bands off their roster: Death Valley Girls and Le Butcherettes. Side A features the Guadalajara-based Le Butcherettes covering an old DVG song titled "The Universe," and side B features a brand new track from Death Valley Girls, the psychedelic, introspective song "When I'm Free." In a press release, frontwoman Bonnie Bloomgarden shares, “We've talked a lot about trauma, mental health, and how hard it is to live in a human body! One concept that has really been helping during the daily struggle is the perspective shift – that things aren't ‘happening to me,' they're ‘happening for me.' Sometimes if you can, squint your eyes, alter your view, try to see experiences as opportunities to learn and grow! Sometimes that's the best we can do!” Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This week Joe has a vibrant conversation with Bonnie Bloomgarden, singer, songwriter and founding member of Death Valley Girls. Bonnie and Joe discuss the impact that touring has had on her life, how a recent tour has served as version of exposure therapy. and why the involuntary break has positively changed both her life at home and her perspective of life on the road. Bonnie tells us how hypnosis plays a role in her song writing and why she feels lucky that her favorite animal is a dog. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing The Only Ocean over Zoom video! With a steady stream of buzz-worthy singles, EP’s that have received rave reviews, and a new, re-energized line-up, the L.A alternative-rock band The Only Ocean is making waves in L.A’s music scene.Formed in Lompoc, CA, during bandleader Wesley Hill’s high school days, the band has evolved from an auspicious bedroom solo-project to a flourishing four-piece that’s carved out its own unique place within the sea of playlists and festival stages in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara, eventually settling further south in Los Angeles, where all four members are from originally and their sound has continued to evolve and deepen with the addition of new members guitarist Tamara Simons, drummer Jonathan Palmquist, and bassist Jordan Kaufman.Bandleader Wesley Hill’s love of the loud, wall-of-sound guitars of shoegaze favorites My Bloody Valentine and Ride, as well as the infectious pop rhythms of the Spice Girls has found a kindred spirit in Jonathan DeBaun (The Mars Volta, Omar Rodríguez-López, Antemasque, Mastodon, and Rituals Of Mine, Le Butcherettes) who has engineered, produced, and mixed all of their music to date. From 2015’s self-titled debut, it’s vulnerable, mature follow-up, TOO, singles such as 2017’s “Good Morning” 2018’s “Replaceable”, which found a stronger emphasis on rhythm and experiments with the production, opting for a style uncommon to alternative rock music, to last year’s “Fake Sunflowers”, their larger-than-life “Still You Won’t” EP and their newest single “Watch It Fall”, this fruitful creative partnership between The Only Ocean and DeBaun as a band and producer has shown no signs of slowing down. All the while The Only Ocean has went from Hill’s brainchild as a four-piece hometown favorite, as a trio, and a solo-venture has led them to return back to a tight energetic touring quartet with releases that are consistent not only in quality, but in praise, earning features in Grimy Goods, Impose Magazine, Northern Transmissions, Alternative Press for 2018’s “Replaceable”, a song whose lyrics were inspired by Hill’s own struggles with body dysmorphia and anorexia and was featured as part of their “10 New Songs You Need to Hear this Week”, to last year’s single “Still You Won’t” being heard in regular rotation on KROQ’s “Locals Only with Kat Corbett”, where it was voted #1 for three weeks and remained within the top 5 for seven weeks straight. The band has continued to record and tour at its own steady pace, supporting acts such as Cherry Glazerr, Dante Elephante, and Sure Sure and recently performed as a featured artist as part of Buzzbands.LA’s “Artists to Watch 2020” showcase earlier in January 2020, in what has shaped up to be another promising start to another year together as a band.We want to hear from you! Prism Bitch loves you. Prism Bitch is a hard rock band that beamed down in 2016 from the dust and wind of New Mexico. The group started as a four piece and asexually reproduced an additional member in 2017, resulting in a 5 piece mix of heavy guitar/keyboard layers blended with pop hooks/melodies/harmonies and occasional total noise freakouts - often compared to The Pixies and The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. From humble beginnings at a punk rock coffeehouse open mic to nominations in the Weekly Alibi's "Best of Burque” music awards for 2017, 2018, and 2019 (Best New Band, Best Party Band, Best Stage Presence, Band Most Likely To Make It Big In Japan), Prism Bitch has been privileged to share stages with Treepeople, Shonen Knife, and Le Butcherettes. In September 2018, Prism Bitch completed a West Coast tour with Built to Spill, and have toured again with the iconic band on the East coast September 12 to October 12, 2019. Prism Bitch released their self-titled EP November 2018. The EP features 5 songs, recorded with engineer Toshi Kasai, known for his work with The Melvins, Big Business and Foo Fighters. Prism Bitch will be releasing a new album in 2020. Prism Bitch has a reputation for wild and performative shows, professionalism and friendship. https://open.spotify.com/artist/7ungoomfqCNHmx5No3a0py?si=N119JXxeSaC-840ltwyh6w https://www.instagram.com/prismbitchband https://www.facebook.com/PrismBish/

The Subway Emergency Brake Saboteur 72 years ago on May 29, 1947 — United Flight 521 crashes during takeoff from LaGuardia Airport Airbnb and New York City Reach a Truce on Home-Sharing Data The city's number of measles cases have flattened out in data this week showing just 12 new cases since May 20th and 54 new cases in the month of May. This brings the total number of cases observed during the current outbreak to 535 within the city and 940 cases nationwide in 2019. As of May 24, there have been 122 summonses issued to individuals for failing to comply with the city health commissioner's public health emergency plan introduced in April, which required everyone within affected zip codes to show proof of vaccination. Although new cases have been seen in Sunset Park outside the initial Williamsburg cluster, the health commissioner is confident that the high vaccination rates in Sunset Park will prevent the disease from spreading. Measles is a highly contagious disease that is spread through the air as sick individuals cough or sneeze. The measles vaccination is included in MMR shots, standing for measles, mumps, and rubella, that contain a specially-weakened form of the virus that trains the body's immune system on how to defend against that virus in the future. For information on where to obtain a measles vaccination, call 311 or view information from the Department of Health at nyc.gov/doh. Rad tunes were playing in the background the whole time, so to avoid being sued, enjoy a shortened taste of the convo they had. He’s been involved in film, start-ups, he’s in the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame, he’s maintained a creative career for over 40 years and he has a knack for knowing where to invest his energy. In this conversation we talk about self-doubt, family bonds, ghosts, and collaborating with large personalities. Garage punk group Le Butcherettes debuts new material for WCPO Lounge Acts. Mexican-American songwriter Teresa Suarez Cosio made a name for herself performing splattered in blood, most often fake but apparently once a real pig’s blood at a Mexico City gig in 2009. It paid off, though, quickly leading to tours with big-name acts like The Flaming Lips, Iggy Pop and the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Much of the garage punk band's inspiration, including its French-sounding name, comes from outrage about women's treatment in Mexico and the horrors of female circumcision. It’s not all feminist angst though for 26-year-old Suarez, who performs under the alter-ego Teri Gender-Bender. NPR’s Tiny Desk describes her as a curious, engaging young woman who transforms "from a soft-spoken and insightful person into a rock 'n' roll beast on a dime." She even confessed to The Los Angeles Times that she sometimes worries fans expect ever-more-outrageous onstage antics and feels occasional “guilt that her rock ’n’ roll activism isn’t yet changing the world.” Le Butcherettes have swapped out quite a few members and dropped three albums over the past decade, but Alejandra Robles Luna on drums and Riko Rodríguez-López on bass guitar now round out Suarez’s vocals and guitar. Set list: Malcolm (unreleased) Spider Ways (unreleased) La Uva Sold Less Than Gold [interview] Shave the Pride To read more and find videos from this session visit: http://bit.ly/2sTHRdj For more on Le Butcherettes visit: https://facebook.com/LeButcherettes For more Lounge Acts visit: http://wcpo.com/LoungeActs Recorded and mixed by Brian Niesz in the WCPO Lounge in Cincinnati, OH on June 22, 2017.

The ZYZXX Song of the Week "Tonight" is merely a tantalizing tease for what you get from former Mexican and now Los Angeles based garage-punk band Le Butcherettes. The trio's leader, the commanding and terrifically terrifying Teri Gender Bender, will force you to your knees with her raw in-your-face, up-your-dress energy as she growls, prowls and screams amid an aural barrage of filthy grooves and raw intensity. ZYZXX likes. "Tonight" is on their latest album Sin Sin Sin released on Rodriguez Lopez Productions.
Will discusses new releases by Le Butcherettes and Explosions In The Sky.
