Looking for daily inspiration? Get a quote from the top leaders in the industry in your inbox every morning. Walter Magnuson is the Executive Director of Winchester Mystery House. With a background that includes guest-facing leadership roles at The Walt Disney Company and experience in hospitality, entertainment, and operations, Walter brings a blend of historical stewardship and modern attraction management to one of the most recognizable historic properties in the United States. Throughout the conversation, he shares insights into preserving the legacy of Sarah Winchester while continuing to evolve the guest experience for modern audiences. In this interview, Walter talks about legends and lore, steering the passion, and providing reassurance. Legends and lore “And the legends and lore of the story is that she sought out a medium… and the medium advised that all the karma is cursing you.” Walter explains how the story of Sarah Winchester continues to fascinate guests more than a century after her passing. He walks through the origins of the home, from Sarah's personal tragedies and the rise of spiritualism in the late 1800s to the unusual architectural features that still define the estate today. The house's winding hallways, stairs leading nowhere, and sealed-off rooms have fueled decades of speculation and intrigue, helping transform the property into a globally recognized attraction. At the same time, Walter emphasizes that the attraction is not solely about ghost stories. The team continues uncovering new historical details about Sarah Winchester's philanthropy, business acumen, and influence during a time when few women held similar power or independence. By balancing the paranormal appeal with deeper historical storytelling, Winchester Mystery House continues to evolve while still honoring the myths and mysteries that first captured public attention. Steering the passion “I think it's really trying to steer that passion in the direction that is most beneficial for us and for the guest experience.” Walter speaks candidly about leading a team of “caretakers” who feel personally connected to the house and its history. Rather than referring to employees as staff members, the organization embraces the idea that everyone is collectively responsible for preserving and sharing Sarah Winchester's legacy. Walter explains that many team members feel deeply protective of the property, sometimes even hesitant to expose certain areas of the house to guests out of fear of damage or overuse. His leadership approach focuses on channeling that passion toward guest-centric thinking. By opening previously restricted spaces, enhancing storytelling, and modernizing parts of the experience, Walter has worked to shift the internal culture toward accessibility and hospitality while still respecting the home's historical significance. He also discusses the realities of operating a privately owned historic attraction, reminding the team that ticket revenue directly funds restoration efforts and keeps the property relevant for future generations. Providing reassurance “It's not escapism and it's not fantasy. It's reassurance.” Walter reflects on lessons he learned during his time at Disney, specifically the philosophy shared by legendary Imagineer John Hench. Walter explains that great attractions do more than entertain. They reassure guests that the world is meaningful, welcoming, and worth exploring. He connects that philosophy directly to Winchester Mystery House and other historic attractions that create emotional experiences capable of inspiring guests long after they leave. Walter also applies this mindset to leadership and organizational culture. Whether discussing neighborhood development around the property or guiding employees through operational change, he consistently emphasizes optimism, communication, and perspective. For him, attractions are not just places people visit. They are places where people reconnect with history, imagination, and each other. That sense of reassurance, he believes, is what makes experiences truly memorable and enduring. Walter can be reached on LinkedIn, as well as by email at walter@winchestermysteryhouse.com. These are just a few of the soothing soundscapes featured on this week's episode.Today, we're talking the Winchester Mystery House and the century-old gossip around its architect, Sarah Winchester. March is often the time for new game announcements, and this year certainly didn't disappoint with of two new reveals, one updated classic and one upcoming reimagined game, all discussed by Jonathan and Martin in the March 2026 Pinball Industry News PINcast.Turner Pinball made a surprise reveal of their third title, Yukon Yeti, just ahead of the Texas Pinball Festival and brought two machines along for visitors to play. This follow-up by Dennis Nordman to his classic Whitewater game has striking similarities, but adds more shots, deeper rules and a novel ball climber lock mechanism.Although their machines didn't clear US customs in time to appear at the Texas show, Hexa Pinball launched their second title, The 3 Musketeers, with a reveal at an art gallery in France. Although no gameplay videos have been released yet, the game will be available to play at selected upcoming shows in the US.The newly relaunched American Pinball are hard at work producing a run of 100 re-artworked Houdini machines commemorating the 100 years since the master illusionist's death, while also developing their first in a series of Williams/Bally reimagined titles, which was announced to be Cirqus Voltaire. Find out what more they had to reveal and how the free prize draw for one of the Houdini machines ended up with two being given away. After last month launch, Stern Pinball's new Pokémon game made its way to Texas for its first show appearance in Pro and Premium forms, while the design team made a presentation about how the new title was created. While Jonathan and Martin were in Texas, they took time out to visit the factories of Barrels of Fun and Multimorphic and talk to David van Es and Gerry Stellenberg. Gerry is also the guest in the latest edition of What's Cooking? With... where he shares his favourite dish and also talks more about the pinball business and the latest developments at Multimorphic. The Texas Pinball Festival features in much of March's pinball industry news, so there are updates on Monster League Hockey, Jersey Jack Pinball's Harry Potter, Winchester Mystery House and Dune, as well as Wonderland Amusements' second title, the end of Predator sales, and a catch up on the latest developments in the Deeproot court case.Catch this and much, much more in the March 2026 edition of the Pinball Magazine and Pinball News Pinball Industry News PINcast. Happy haunt season, ghouls! We're kicking off October with a TON of paranormal evidence—ghost photos, videos and EVPs. This time, every single story comes with proof so you can see and hear the paranormal activity for yourself. Get ready for goosebumps, giggles, and the kind of evidence that makes you want to leave the lights on. Stories Include: At the Winchester Mystery House, a video captures a woman in white drifting past a window, complete with an EVP whispering, “I miss this house.” A roommate's demonic attachment makes itself known through hair pulling and an unnerving snapshot with glowing eyes. A tour of the notoriously haunted SK Pierce Mansion ends with strange energy shifts, payment glitches, and a chilling face appearing in a window photo. From the infamous Sally House, a recorder plays back an eerie little girl's singing while the house was empty. Security footage from a Pennsylvania shop shows unexplained glowing shapes floating through the room like ghostly fish. We laughed, we screamed, and we realized ghosts might be better at selfies than we are. Get tickets to the October 8th live show here. Watch the video version here. Have ghost stories of your own? For most people, home represents comfort, safety, maybe family. It's the place where you can be yourself — and where you keep all your stuff. For the wealthy, the right home can mean status, reputation, and legacy, especially in the UK. For hundreds of years, the traditional English manor was more than simply a big house staffed with servants. It was a grand home situated on farmland owned by the family. In addition to being a showpiece, it was a responsibility. The US equivalent is a Gilded Age mansion, minus the need to worry about the welfare of tenants. Those 20th-century robber barons could simply count their money and throw lavish dinner parties. And in Europe, the history and luxurious accommodations come in the form of palaces, chateaux, castles, palazzos, and other opulent estates. In this episode, we explore the house -as-character in books by iconic authors, including Jane Austen, the Brontë sisters, Nancy Mitford, and a gaggle of Gothic writers. We also delve into the real secrets of the Winchester Mystery House and meet the various ghosts haunting British country piles. Then we recommend many books we love set in notable manor homes, including: The Original by Nell Stevens The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters The Cherry Robbers by Sarai Walker — and the audiobook The Murder of Roger Ackroyd by Agatha Christie Wakenhyrst by Michelle Paver — and the audiobook For more on the books we recommend, plus the other cool stuff we talk about, visit show notes. Universal is doubling down on pop-culture firepower with the enormously popular gaming IPs of Fallout and Five Nights at Freddy's confirmed for this year's Halloween Horror Nights. They're also charging superfans $350 for “Premium Scream Night,” a ticketed dress rehearsal. With massive IPs and superfans willing to pay premium prices just to attend a dress rehearsal, how can smaller attractions compete? Thirteenth Floor and Winchester Mystery House might have an answer with "Festival Fright Nights." The event will transform the labyrinthine Winchester Mystery House into a Halloween event with three haunted houses and entertainment. The key is the immersive storyline, which sets the event in 1924 and utilizes the mansion's backdrop and history, showing that smaller venues can out-maneuver giant budgets by weaponizing authenticity and location. Philip and Scott unpack what these parallel strategies signal about Halloween's next arms race—premium previews, IP one-upmanship, and how regional haunts can lean into their unique assets instead of chasing billion-dollar licenses.
