Welcome everyone to Funny With An Accent, the podcast exclusively hosted by people with accents. Every week we have a different guest from around the world joining us. We’ll have YOU guess where they are from as we share stories about living abroad, experiencing culture shocks, and laugh at all those words we mispronounce. We’ll only reveal the answer at the end of every episode.
Sick and tired of the daily grind as a 25 year old working in the family business, Tim left it all behind to go to New York. He started off as a busboy in South Brooklyn. The type of bar rich Moldovans own to try to hit on women (yes, this is actually a thing!). From there he hustled his way to one of New York's top bars. Tim's life story is not all we talk about in this episode though. We delve into the surprising truth of what happens when you tip your bartenders, the wildest ice hockey fight stories, how Tim's country maybe but probably helped write the constitution, and half non-jokingly discuss massive male genocide. Nbd. Tune in and enjoy!
There's human jams, there's no personal space, there are no shit sandwiches, and there's an Argentina to fútbol type of obsession with another sport. Today's guest tells us a bit about her very special corner of the world. She also walks us through her process as an illustrator: drawing strangers in public and all the sticky situations that brings. On top of all this we talk about the social menace that is skateboarding, some useful tips for haggling, Facebook marketplace's anti-haggling epidemic, and all the reasons why shower sex is simply a bad idea. Listen to this or you might just get bed-stuy bugs on your mattress!
One of the biggest stereotypes for this country is that everyone knows each other. We certainly did not disprove that with this episode! Its accents are also world famous (and highly desired!), but also wonderfully varied and specific. Our guest today talks to us about all this, but also tries to show us a picture of his home country that is not what you always hear: a welcome place that is booming economically and has a lot to offer. We also talk about how saying yes to everything can lead you to carrying perrier water up the stairs of the Dakota for Yoko Ono, grabbing dinner with Leonardo Dicaprio's art agent (and yes, we do ask if Yoko Ono tips well)... or in a very long boring Uber ride. Along the way we hear about our guest's many international adventures. So don't be a gobshite and tune in to this week's episode!
Three hour lunches are not an easy thing to accomplish. They require a few key elements: chatty participants, a slow waiter, coffee and a digestive at the end of the meal, and finally just a bit of a different attitude towards life. Our guest comes from a place just like this. In this episode, our guest tells us a bit about their fascinating life story: a foreign mother with a great accent, being the son of a miracle, speaking three languages, being part of several movements (squatters, critical mass, comic book conventions), and how all that lead to their life as an artist today. On top of this, we talk through some detours: lockers, unfriendly margarita-making roommates, seeing Catherine Zeta Jones naked and how wind can make us crazy. Listen to this one soon, before death catches up with you.
Cigarettes at 13, getting caught smoking weed by your parents, and dad giving you the silent treatment after catching you skipping school with beers clinking on your backpack. Yes, we also talk about getting grounded. This weeks' guest, Bibi, prompts many stories about misbehaving when young and cross-cultural parenting and the many forms it takes. We also dip our toes into the endless international debate between greeting with kisses or hugs, and the many anxieties and strategies involved with the former. This episode is proudly not sponsored by Cricket Wireless.
It's a place of directness, newcomers, bread and rice, and nosy neighbors. In this episode, we meet an artist named Noga. We start off with how where she's from has given her thick skin and how that has made her a better artist (we even talk about the famous shit sandwich). We talk about privacy. Some places would rather hide every single good thing that happens to you (don't jinx it!), while others would shout out your grades out loud in the classroom. We talk about New York. To Noga and Ale, its "no one cares about you" vibes are liberating. We talk about tortilla chips, Yonkers and "Industrial". At the end, Jorge almost doesn't guess where our guest is from. Tune in to see if you can!
We're not going to lie: We talk a lot about cheating on this episode. We talk about types of cheating, strategies for cheating, tools for cheating, ethics of cheating, going to the bathroom for cheating, getting caught cheating, and even being very publicly humiliated for cheating. Turns out one of our hosts was a complete dweeb growing up! We also talk about the role of gender in dating and gender roles, taking out the ruler on your kids, and whether you should give the best piece of chicken to your kids. Towards the end we talk about picking your name as an adult: how do you go about picking it, the meaning of different names, and we go through some of the most awful ones. In the end, we see Alex get very, very close to guessing where our guest is from!
For the first time in our podcast's history, we interviewed a total, complete stranger. The stranger comes from a country filled with beautiful beaches, a lot of complaining, and apparently way too many British tourists. He tells us about his journey to New York: how his parents see it as science fiction, his way into painting, and the strange, lingering meaning of how the airport felt when he first arrived. We also talk about the real story behind the word "eggplant", how reggeaton fails to move a single muscle in his body, England being a sore loser, and how someone mispronouncing your name might not actually matter. Finally, the stranger talks to us about his life as a painter: how people interpret his art, what it's like being a painter in New York, and his thoughts on how to navigate the art market.
Imagine speaking perfect English and being unable to properly order water. Imagine the annoying feeling of absolutely everyone mispronouncing your name (which might have even caused a breakup for one of our hosts!). In this episode, NJ talks to all about all this and about her country: one with plenty of beauty, kindness and ... official languages! Through this we get to learn about another country learning to address and talk about race. Openness, directness and a good dose of humor, our guess thinks, have become useful methods. At the end, she shares the meaning of "ubuntu": a beautiful word with deep meaning that summarizes what her home country is all about.
Tricked into going to boarding school, suspended for punching a racist English boy in the face, and coming to America to avoid bullshit jobs. Our special guest, Bubu, takes us through the many interesting episodes of her globetrotting life. Along the way, we talk about the very natural desire to leave your parent's place, getting credit for what you do, international differences in boyfriend styles, "relaxing the shit" out of a relationship, and our take towards New York .. and its trash.
Have you ever wondered how to get your Amazon account canceled? How to semi-legally be let into the Irish Republic? What would it be like to have the subway play the conductor's favorite Spotify playlist when riding? In this week's episode, we sit down with a man who will provide answers to all these questions. Our well-traveled guest also provides some insights about what he took away from his late-night chow-downs in Portugal and his time in Vancouver, Canada. Also, our hosts make some tough confessions about some of the many ways they've gamed the system and bent the rules.
Every podcast needs a first episode, and this is ours! Our three hosts (Ale, Alex, and Jorge) sit down and give clues as to where they're from as you, our listener, try to guess where that is! While they do this, they share the stories of their very first night in the USA (some fun, some not so much), f**king up the brand of where you're from, and what it's like being asked that very classical question "where are you from". We also discuss the uncommon situation of deciding to be friends with someone based on what language they speak to you in and the multi-year effect that can have on a friendship. At the end, the big reveal!
