White Chocolate is about a female detective who, along with her male partner, has to solve the killing of a high school basketball prodigy in Yonkers, New York (near New York City). Detective Erika Gonzalez is a single mom and the daughter of a cop killed in the line of duty. Her son's father, who proved unfaithful during their relationship, has been recently released from prison. The story focuses on Erika's resilience in the face of personal and professional challenges, as well as the unwanted attention that comes to an attractive woman who simply wants to do her job. What genres does your screenplay fall under? Drama, Crime, Sports. Why should this screenplay be made into a movie? Erika is a character who faces so many challenges in a male-dominated profession and is constantly being tested, which makes her someone worth rooting for. Also, the basketball prodigy represents the hopes and dreams of many in a city not noted for producing famous people. Many in the community live vicariously through him, making his killing difficult for them to process. Fingers are pointed in many different directions. There's a whodunit element to the story. Those who may be able to identify the killer before the detectives may be intrigued by the lengths to which the killer tries to avoid accountability. How many stories have you written? Two screenplays. The other is Iceman, which is about a Black hockey trailblazer in the 1995-96 National Hockey League season.I'm also the author of four books: Breaking the Ice: The Black Experience in Professional Hockey (Insomniac Press, Toronto), the first book that told the unique stories of Black players in hockey; Call the Yankees My Daddy: Reflections on Baseball, Race, and Family; Charging the Net: A History of Blacks in Tennis from Althea Gibson and Arthur to the Williams Sisters; and Different Strokes: Serena, Venus, and the Unfinished Black Tennis Revolution. My books reside at the intersection of sports and sociology. I used to cover the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes for The News & Observer in Raleigh and the New York Rangers for Newsday in New York. BECCA: You think this is funny, Howie? HOWIE: Of course not. But you need to relax about it. Izzy could be right. BECCA: About what? HOWIE: The baby, getting her on track. It can wake a person up. It did us. BECCA: She was bragging about a bar fight. HOWIE: It wasn't a bar fight. BECCA: They were in a bar! Fighting! HOWIE: Izzy hit someone, she didn't get into a fight. Blows were never exchanged. BECCA: What is your point? It's okay for a pregnant woman to be punching people? HOWIE: Well so long as they don't punch her back, it's probably all right. Recently on The Debbie Nigro Show, we had a very special young guest: the fabulous Destiny Bella Kinsey, a talented 10-year-old from Yonkers, NY who is making a powerful impact with her anti-bullying video, “Rise and Stop Bullies”. Destiny may be one of the youngest stars we've ever featured, but her story and vision are as impactful as they come!  Bullied herself in elementary school, Destiny took a difficult experience and turned it into a message of strength and hope for others. While no one was there to help her at first, once she was able to admit to her Mom what was troubling her so much, she decided to make a difference so that no other child would have to feel alone.  With the support of her film teacher, school friends, and her wonderful mom, Larnez Kinsey, Destiny crafted a moving short film showcasing how stepping up as a bystander can stop bullying in its tracks.  Her mom, Larnez, an inspiring powerhouse herself, has raised five daughters while working in New York State Corrections and running Black Gate Consulting Group, where she helps people access critical grants. Talk about a family of change-makers!  As Destiny confidently shared her vision in our studio, I couldn't help but recognize her as a future superstar. She's already got the spark, talent, and ambition to influence the world. Her filmmaking club at school is just the beginning!  So, whether you have kids in school or know someone who does, this video is a must-watch. "Rise and Stop Bullies" is a heartfelt call for action, urging us all to step in and support one another. Sharing it could help spread awareness and, hopefully, make every school a safer place.  And hey, Destiny might be helping me out with TikTok soon—this girl knows how to keep things fresh!  Let's amplify Destiny's voice and celebrate her mission. Heddwen is half Dutch, half British, and writes two entertaining newsletters about language.  English and the Dutch is about how Dutch people speak English (hint: sometimes badly), and also dives into interesting etymologies that link the two languages.  Heddwen has been writing about difficult-to-translate Dutch words and idioms since 2017 on her blog HoezegjeinhetEngels.nl. English in Progress lists neologisms and Gen Z slang in a way that is funny but also lexicographically sound. And we are talking about the Dutch influence on English including loan words and cultural intersections.
