Hey Wiretappers, listen to my short bonus episode. I'm looking for mob fans to read the first half of a memoir about my life, which is partly about being a cop and mostly about the Civella Spero War. Email me at ganglandwire@gmail.com and I'll send you a pdf to read. It's about 22,000 words. Once it's done, I'll send you a copy This week, we journey back to the early 1900s—a time when the first wave of Sicilian immigrants brought more than just dreams of opportunity to America. They also brought with them an age-old criminal code that would lay the foundation for the American Mafia as we know it. Our story begins with the Mustache Petes—those old-world mafiosi who preyed on their own immigrant communities through intimidation, extortion, and a cunning knack for organized crime. One of their earliest rackets? Counterfeiting.
Eric, Jeff, Sheek, Styles and Jadakiss got together in Yonkers to break down The Social Network, the 2010 American biographical drama film portraying the founding of the social networking website Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg, directed by David Fincher, written by Aaron Sorkin, starring Jesse Eisenberg, Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Armie Hammer and Max Minghella. We discuss the impact of social media, what makes "genius," how file sharing changed the music business, what billionaires we trust, if "The Social Network" is the film of our generation, whether it matters that there's creative license in a film like this and much more! PLUS: Sheek listens to ItsTheReal, Pumpkleta and The Adventures of Karate Man!!! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
HVS goes to source of hit film shot in Garrison During the Great Depression, Thornton Wilder wrote a play called The Merchant of Yonkers, which flopped. Revising it in the 1950s as The Matchmaker, it might also have passed as The Taming of the Scrooge, as miserly and miserable businessman Horace Vandergelder repents at the end. This is the raw material that Broadway impresario David Merrick turned into the musical Hello, Dolly!, which debuted in 1964, won 10 Tony Awards and ran for 2,844 performances (The Matchmaker played 486 times on Broadway). Though the story is set in Yonkers (and Manhattan), producers for the 1969 Hollywood version shot several scenes at Garrison's Landing in part because Vandergelder indicates that the train station is less than a minute from his house. A yellowing window decoration created for the movie set is still preserved on the ground floor of a brick office building that served as an inn during the 1800s, when the play takes place. The Matchmaker is a subversive screed against greed that critiques capitalism, champions adventure (mentioned 17 times) and calls for the redistribution of wealth: Money, says Nance Williamson, who portrays Dolly Levi in the ongoing Hudson Valley Shakespeare production, "is like manure; it's not worth a thing unless it's spread around encouraging young things to grow." Letting emerging painter Ambrose Kemper (Blaize Adler-Ivanbrook) in on her plan to marry Vandergelder and free up the hoarder's lucre, she says that the value of cash is to trickle "like rainwater. It should be flowing down among the people." The play also explores the toll that work takes on the toilers, unable to live a life with much leisure or pleasure. When Manhattan hat shop owner Irene Molloy (Helen Cespedes) loses herself dancing and imbibing at the fancy Harmonia Gardens restaurant, she says, "to think that this goes on in hundreds of places every night while I sit at home darning my stockings." It's worse for Cornelius Hackl (Carl Howell), chief clerk at Vandergelder's hay, feed and provisions store, who awakens at 6 a.m. and closes shop at 9 p.m. He sleeps in the bran room and only gets Sundays off. When Hackl, 33, asks for another evening to himself after getting an ersatz promotion, Vandergelder (Kurt Rhoads) tells his charge that he should get up earlier and close the shop at 10 p.m.: "If I'd had evenings free [as a young man], I wouldn't be what I am now!" he thunders, with irony. The grueling work schedule hinders Hackl's personal life and he finds it difficult to speak with women in a social setting. In rebellion, he talks his apprentice Barnaby Tucker (Tyler Bey) into playing hooky and heading into Manhattan - vowing not to return until they've kissed a woman. According to the script notes, "farces are notoriously tricky to stage." After spotting Vandergelder (who is visiting the city to propose to Molloy), they duck into her hat shop. Things get hairy when the wayward clerks are inevitably discovered. As directed by Davis McCallum, HVS's artistic director, several scenes feature the stage and house filled with actors screaming, running amok and almost colliding with each other. The book is peppered with witty jokes and pithy insights, but the main comedic thrust rests in the situations and shenanigans. As Miss Flora Van Huysen, upon whose townhouse everyone descends during the wee hours, Katie Hartke channels a humorous Nora Desmond from Sunset Boulevard. Like The Comedy of Errors, the other offering at HVS through early August, The Matchmaker unfolds like a zany sitcom and concludes on a high note: Clerk Hackl finds a wife, the artist Kemper is approved to marry Vandergelder's niece and Dolly gets to spread the manure around. All's well that ends well. Hudson Valley Shakespeare is located at 2015 Route 9 in Philipstown. Tickets are $10 to $100 at hvshakespeare.org or at the door. The Matchmaker runs on select evenings through Aug. 3.

Meet my friends, Clay Travis and Buck Sexton! If you love Verdict, the Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show might also be in your audio wheelhouse. Politics, news analysis, and some pop culture and comedy thrown in too. Here’s a sample episode recapping four Thursday takeaways. Give the guys a listen and then follow and subscribe wherever you get your podcasts. PC Pres Corps Hour 1 of The Clay Travis and Buck Sexton Show dives into the explosive fallout from a leaked intelligence report questioning the effectiveness of a recent U.S. military strike on Teran. Hosts Clay and Buck, alongside commentary from Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, launch a full-throated defense of the mission and President Donald Trump’s leadership, while sharply criticizing the mainstream media for what they describe as politically motivated reporting. The hour opens with a breakdown of the CNN and New York Times leaks, which suggested the strike may have failed. Buck Sexton, drawing on his intelligence background, explains the complexities of identifying leakers and the dangers of politicizing classified information. The hosts argue that the leak was a deliberate attempt by the “deep state” to undermine President Trump’s credibility and military success. Pete Hegseth’s fiery Pentagon press conference is a focal point, where he accuses the press corps of rooting against Trump and downplaying the bravery and precision of U.S. pilots. The segment includes a viral moment where Hegseth is questioned for not explicitly acknowledging female pilots, prompting a broader discussion on gender politics in the military and media. A former female military pilot calls in to express support for Hegseth, dismissing the controversy as media-driven nitpicking. Why What Happens in NY Matters Everywhere the political upheaval surrounding New York City's mayoral race, highlighting the rise of Democratic Socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani. Clay and Buck analyze the implications of Mamdani's nomination, emphasizing how his progressive platform—backed by figures like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Bernie Sanders—signals a broader shift within the Democratic Party. They explore the national ramifications of this political momentum, warning that what happens in New York could soon influence Democrat-led cities across the country. The hosts critique Mamdani's proposals, including an 800% increase in funding for hate crime prevention and his assertion that the criminal justice system is inherently racist. They argue these initiatives are more about left-wing indoctrination than effective governance. The conversation also touches on Mamdani's savvy use of social media and his appeal to younger voters, many of whom are financially supported by their parents and drawn to socialism despite benefiting from capitalism. Local Story with National Reach Eric Adams, the current NYC mayor, is portrayed as a potential moderate counterweight, possibly running as an independent. The show discusses the strategic challenges Adams faces, especially if former Governor Andrew Cuomo enters the race, potentially splitting the anti-Mamdani vote. The hosts also examine the fractured state of the Democratic Party, debating whether it can still suppress far-left candidates or if it will continue to “double down on crazy.” President Donald Trump is referenced as a stabilizing force, particularly in contrast to the chaos the hosts associate with progressive policies. They highlight the effectiveness of Trump-era immigration enforcement, with praise for figures like Tom Homan and Stephen Miller, and criticize sanctuary city policies that undermine federal law enforcement. The hour concludes with a broader cultural critique, linking the rise of socialism to generational entitlement and a rejection of meritocracy. The hosts argue that capitalism’s success has ironically enabled the luxury of anti-capitalist sentiment, particularly among younger, affluent urban voters. Do You Buy This Story? Jamaal Bowman's questionable story about being yelled at by a white dude in Yonkers, NY. Media bias and the decline of CNN’s credibility. Jake Tapper lectures us on the purpose of journalism. Clay and Buck point out that CNN has become a partisan outlet, losing its former status as a trusted news source. They discuss whether the network is salvageable and propose that only a radical overhaul—possibly led by a figure like Megyn Kelly—could restore its relevance. The show also explores internal divisions within the Democratic Party, sparked by Chris Cuomo’s criticism of the party’s far-left wing, including figures like AOC and Bernie Sanders. The hosts argue that the Democratic Party is increasingly dominated by anti-capitalist, radical progressive ideologies, which they claim alienate moderate voters and threaten national unity. Further discussion includes the media’s treatment of conservatives, the legacy of Trumpism, and the broad coalition President Trump has built, including former Democrats like Tulsi Gabbard and RFK Jr. The hosts highlight how Trump’s second term is marked by a more strategic and media-savvy administration. On August 10, 1977, the NYPD arrested David Berkowitz for the Son of Sam murders that had terrorized New York City for over a year. Berkowitz confessed to shooting sixteen people and killing six with a .44 caliber Bulldog revolver, and the case was officially closed. Journalist Maury Terry was suspicious of Berkowitz's confession. Spurred by conflicting witness descriptions of the killer and clues overlooked in the investigation, Terry was convinced Berkowitz didn't act alone. Meticulously gathering evidence for a decade, he released his findings in the first edition of The Ultimate Evil. Based upon the evidence he had uncovered, Terry theorized that the Son of Sam attacks were masterminded by a Yonkers-based cult that was responsible for other ritual murders across the country. After Terry's death in 2015, documentary filmmaker Josh Zeman (Cropsey, The Killing Season, Murder Mountain) was given access to Terry's files, which form the basis of his docuseries with Netflix and a companion podcast. Episode No. 703 of The Modern Art Notes Podcast features artist Dakota Mace and curator Claire Howard. SITE Santa Fe is showing "Dakota Mace: DAHODIYINII—SACRED PLACES," an investigation of an atrocity during which the United States expelled the Diné people from Dinétah, their ancestral homeland, and forced them to march as many as 400 miles to the Bosque Redondo in central-eastern New Mexico, where they were forced to remain in a concentration camp from 1864-68. The exhibition is organized into themes such as memory, land, and the stars; with each section of the show considering Diné cosmology. The exhibition, which is on view through May 19, was curated by Brandee Caoba. Mace is also featured in "Smoke in Our Hair: Native Memory and Unsettled Time" at the Hudson River Museum, Yonkers, NY. The exhibition examines how Native artists have explored memory and time, including how the past is continually remembered and reimagined. It was curated by Sháńdíín Brown and will remain on view through August 31, 2025. "Smoke in Our Hair" features previous MAN Podcast guests such as Saif Azzuz, Teresa Baker, and Andrea Carlson. Howard is the curator of one section of "In Creative Harmony: Three Artistic Partnerships" an exhibition that considers artistic discourse, at the Blanton Museum of Art, University of Texas at Austin. Other sections present dialogue between Nora Naranjo Morse and her daughter Eliza Naranjo Morse and José Guadalupe Posada and Artemio Rodríguez. It's on view through July 20. You've found the perfect disciplinarian who knows exactly what to say to you to get you into that headspace where you can just want to say to him, “Yes, sir, I deserve a spanking,” and mean it. How have conditions changed since 1970 in neighborhoods where Black residents are the largest racial or ethnic group? Mike Lens wrote a whole book on the subject: Where the Hood At? Fifty Years of Change in Black Neighborhoods. He takes the guest mic to share what he learned.Book summary: Substantial gaps exist between Black Americans and other racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., most glaringly Whites, across virtually all quality-of-life indicators.
