Danielle was standing in a NICU holding her newborn daughter Hope when a stranger approached her asking, "Are you Angelina's Mom?" Danielle's quiet response was, "I used to be." The woman was a pediatric oncologist from a hospital in Westchester. She had never met Angelina. But she knew exactly who she was. Parents of sick children had been bringing in pictures. Angelina ziplining. Angelina indoor skydiving. Angelina feeding dolphins. Angelina snorkeling with sharks. What do I need to do, they kept asking their doctors, so my child can live like Angelina? And when Angelina died, grief counselors had to be brought in for those parents, because if there was no hope for a kid like her, what hope was there for any of them? Those parents decided their children wouldn't just survive. They would thrive. Like Angelina. And then the doctor said something Danielle has never forgotten. There will be thousands of children who are sick, who will live and be inspired to live, and to live well, who will never know her name. Angelina was diagnosed with stage 4 neuroblastoma at three and a half years old. The tumor ran from her adrenal gland down into her pelvis, climbed her lymph channel up her stomach, wrapped itself around her aorta, and spread to her bones. On a scale of zero to fifteen, she scored a fourteen. She was given a twenty percent chance of survival. She fought for seven and a half years. And the whole time, she lived. She indoor skydived. She ziplined across Las Vegas Boulevard. She snorkeled with exotic fish, swam with sharks, and ziplined down a volcano in Hawaii. She wanted to bungee jump into the Grand Canyon. She served her mother a legal cease-and-desist letter, drafted by a friend's attorney parent, claiming trademark rights over her own facial expressions and catchphrases. She had big plans, better ideas, and absolutely no interest in being told what she could not do. The clinical trial Angelina participated in changed its criteria because of how she responded. Future treatments for BRCA2-positive neuroblastomas are being developed from her genome sequencing. Sick children across the country were inspired to fight because their parents carried her pictures into hospitals. A grandmother's quiet words to fight traveled to Danielle, who carried them to Angelina, who carried them to children she never knew existed. The lessons keep traveling. The love keeps traveling. Presented by Julie Busteed How do we live our lives walking worthy of Christ and not spend our day constantly exhausted? I've been looking at how God created us to rest. And, as always, Jesus is our best example. Jesus was constantly in demand. Crowds followed him. His disciples needed him. Sick and hurting people came to him. The Pharisees watched and challenged him. And yet, Jesus made time to rest. Luke 5:16 says, But Jesus often withdrew to lonely places and prayed. Around this time, Jesus was healing people, and the news about him was spreading quickly. Crowds were coming to him to be healed of their diseases. Yet, right in the middle of all that demand and attention, Jesus withdrew to a lonely place and prayed. He wasn't driven by the desire to be popular, needed, or in demand. The kind of recognition that can so easily become a driving force in our lives wasn't his priority. His priority was doing the Father's will and that began with getting away from the crowds and spending time alone with God. Sometimes I think we're afraid to be alone. We need constant busyness or noise. Maybe you and I are simply so accustomed to it that we don't even notice it anymore. But we need quiet. Our souls need time alone with God. Psalm 46:10 says, Be still, and know that I am God. God calls us to himself to be still and simply be with him. Jesus also needed physical rest. John 4:6 says, Jacob's well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon. Jesus was tired, so he sat down and rested. He allowed the other disciples to go into town to get the supplies they needed while he stayed behind. And while he rested, he had an amazing conversation with the woman who came to the well. Jesus didn't neglect his physical needs. He rested. And he trusted others to take care of what needed to be done. I recently had the opportunity to get away and rest for a few days at a lake house. I noticed this saying that was on a plaque in the home: “Time wasted at the lake is time well spent.” I take it to mean that rest and not doing your ordinary life of work–getting out of your daily routine and relaxing and enjoying time at the lake is not wasted. That rest is important. That this time is valuable. I would argue that we also need to “waste time” with God. Not because our time is actually wasted, but because sometimes the most productive thing we can do is simply rest in him. I think the plaque could read “Time wasted with God is time well spent!”

Read OnlineThe Power of His WordAfter Jesus left the synagogue, he entered the house of Simon. Simon's mother-in-law was afflicted with a severe fever, and they interceded with him about her. He stood over her, rebuked the fever, and it left her. She got up immediately and waited on them. Luke 4:38–39In today's Gospel, we encounter the first mention of Simon—whose name Jesus would later change to Peter—in Luke's account. Simon was likely present in the synagogue and witnessed Jesus cast out a demon from a possessed man. With a simple command, “Be quiet! Come out of him!”, Jesus revealed His divine authority. The people were astonished and exclaimed, “What is there about his word? For with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits, and they come out” (Luke 4:35–36).Having seen His authority firsthand, Simon presumably spoke to Jesus about his mother-in-law, who was suffering from a severe fever. It is striking to imagine the moment of Simon's first personal encounter with the Lord. Though Jesus, in His divine foresight, knew what Simon would one day become—the first pope entrusted with the spiritual authority of Heaven—Simon himself could not have foreseen how radically his life was about to change.Upon entering Simon's home, Jesus rebuked the fever. The Greek word used here, epitimaō, is the same word used in the previous passage when Jesus rebuked the demon. This deliberate parallel reveals that both the spiritual and physical realms are subject to Jesus' command. What He rebuked were real evils and disorders: demonic possession as a violation of the soul and the fever as a natural affliction of the body.Later in this Gospel passage, Jesus continues healing many who are sick and casting out demons. Once again, He rebukes the demons, silencing them and forbidding them to speak. Though they cry out, “You are the Son of God,” Jesus does not permit them to bear witness to Him. He has no need of demons to proclaim His identity. His revelation will come in His time, by His own design, especially through the Cross and Resurrection.Jesus' rebukes, whether uttered by a word, expressed through a gesture, or conveyed by His mere presence, are divine actions against evil. They are not expressions of wishful hope, but authoritative, efficacious commands. What He speaks comes to be. His word is not just powerful; it accomplishes what it declares.Understanding this is foundational to our life of faith and our spiritual journey. When we turn to Christ with trust, we must believe that His word has the power to heal, to free, and to transform. He does not speak in vain. His authority extends to every dimension of our lives, body, soul, and spirit, and He desires to restore all that has been wounded by sin, suffering, or disorder.One of the most tangible and powerful ways this takes place today is through the words of absolution spoken by the priest in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, a spiritual authority first given to Simon Peter and passed down through apostolic succession. The words of absolution are Christ's words, words that rebuke sin and its effects, restoring the soul to grace and peace. They are divine actions that accomplish what they signify.Though the words of absolution may be the clearest example, every Sacrament—Baptism, Confirmation, the Eucharist, Anointing of the Sick, Holy Orders, and Matrimony—conveys God's grace and power through the efficacious word and action of Christ.Reflect today on your own trust in the power of Jesus' word. Do you believe He can rebuke the disorders in your life with divine authority? Do you turn to Him with confidence in the Sacraments, knowing that what He speaks, He accomplishes? Surrender all that afflicts you to the power of His Word, and allow Him to restore you to grace, relying especially on the sacramental authority given to Simon Peter and exercised by the priests who have followed after. My authoritative Lord, when You speak, what You speak comes to be. Speak to me, Lord. Rebuke my sin and weakness, so that Your holy will may be accomplished in my life. Let me hear Your voice, especially in the Sacraments through which Your mercy is poured forth and Your power is made manifest. Jeffrey's story is wild... Abused by ten, homeless by twelve, twenty years in and out of boys' homes and prison, and eventually part of a notorious Australian bank robbery crew, Jeffrey's life could very easily have ended up looking very different to what is does today. Grudges don't just weigh on your heart. They weigh on your body. I was reading an article recently by Dr. Lantie Jorandby, a board-certified psychiatrist, in Psychology Today. She writes about how holding onto resentment raises stress and cortisol. Higher cortisol means higher blood pressure, weakened immunity, and greater risk of heart disease. It's also tied to depression and rumination, that repetitive negative loop your mind gets stuck in. That loop steals your sleep, which drives cortisol even higher. It's a cycle that feeds itself. Cortisol even affects the hippocampus, the part of your brain responsible for memory. That's part of why people with chronic PTSD often show a smaller hippocampus on scans. Add in muscle tension, elevated heart rate, higher blood pressure, and this isn't a small thing your body is shrugging off. It's carrying it. The Bible talks about forgiveness constantly, and I think this research shows us why. But forgiveness gets misunderstood a lot, so let's be clear about what it actually is. It doesn't mean pretending you weren't mistreated. It doesn't mean there are no consequences for someone's behavior. It doesn't mean going back into a relationship that isn't safe. What it does mean is choosing to release the resentment, and letting go of wanting revenge, even when revenge would feel justified. I'll be honest with you about why this topic landed on my heart this week. I'd written my notes for this episode about a week before I recorded it, and I had no idea how much I'd need my own reminder by the time I sat down to talk. I won't get into the specifics, but something happened recently that stirred up some old, not-positive feelings toward a former employer, feelings I thought I'd already worked through. It was like salt got rubbed right back into a wound I thought had closed. If I'm honest, it hurt my pride more than anything else. That experience got me thinking about something a lot of women carry quietly: church hurt. Sitting with my own small version of it gave me real compassion for women who've been hurt far worse, by people in the church, and who've walked away from it entirely because of what happened to them there. If that's you, if part of you doesn't want to go back, I don't blame you. But I'd gently remind you: the church is made up of flawed people. Not everyone in it wants to harm you. And God saw what happened. He cares. There's a story in Genesis that's stayed with me on this. Sarai didn't trust God to give her and Abraham a child, so she told Abraham to sleep with her servant, Hagar. Once Hagar became pregnant, Sarai dealt harshly with her, and Hagar fled into the wilderness alone. But God met her there. Genesis 16:13 says she called Him "a God of seeing," saying, "Truly here I have seen him who looks after me." God does not want us harmed. When you were hurt, He saw it. He was with you then, and He's with you now. He wants your pain brought to Him, not carried alone in silence. So bring it to Him. Talk to Him about it like you would a trusted friend, or write it out in a letter if that's easier. Ask Him plainly: help me forgive. Some days that's a one-time prayer. Other days you'll have to pray it again the moment the memory resurfaces, and then again after that. Forgiveness is rarely a single decision. It's a practice you return to, and there's real freedom in knowing God asks us to keep forgiving because He kept forgiving us. If church hurt is part of your story, here's what I want you to know: there are people in the church who genuinely love the way Christ loved. You don't have to go back to the one that hurt you, but I'd encourage you not to stay away from church altogether. Healing tends to happen in community, not in isolation. God never intended for you to carry bitterness or resentment quietly until it made you sick. He wants you free from it, in your spirit and in your body. Friends of the Rosary,Today, August 27, the Church celebrates the Memorial of St. Monica (333-387), who, through prayer and tears, gave the great Augustine to the Church of God.We also celebrate today the feast of the Seven Joys of the Blessed Virgin Mary, or the Franciscan, and the feast of Mary, Health of the Sick.St. Monica prayed, endured, hoped, and trusted God for years, especially for the conversion of her son, Saint Augustine, one of her three children, as well as for Navigius and Perpetua, who later became a nun.At about the age of sixteen, Augustine fell in with bad companions and took a concubine. Monica greatly desired that her son become a Christian, and for this she labored long—praying, pleading, weeping.To her joy, Augustine was baptized in Milan by Saint Ambrose at the age of thirty-two. She died in Ostia in 387. Augustine praised God for his mother: “Graciously you heard her, and you did not despise her tears when they flowed down from her eyes and watered the earth beneath, in whatsoever place she prayed.”St Monica was born in Tagaste, northern Africa, and died in Ostia, near Rome. Monica was a Christian, but her husband Patricius was a pagan and a man of loose morals. Monica's virtues and prayers, however, converted him, and he was baptized a year before his death. When her son, Augustine, joined the Manichean sect and went astray in faith and morals, Monica's tears and prayers for her son were incessant. She followed him to Milan, where Augustine went to teach, and there continued to storm heaven with her prayers for her son.In today's readings from the Gospel, Saint Paul reminds the Corinthians that God has enriched them with grace and will keep them firm to the end. In parallel, Jesus tells His disciples to stay awake and be ready, like faithful servants waiting for their master. An FBI profiler thinks Lindsay Clancy is a psychopath who was sick of her kids. That's how one commenter puts it, citing Pat Brown, with Matt Walsh as a second vote. The commenter rejects both of them. She's closer to the record than the people she quoted.Pat Brown was never in the FBI. She's an independent, self-taught profiler with a criminal justice master's who has written that she felt too old to join the Bureau and built her own practice instead. She has posted videos arguing Lindsay fabricated her psychosis. Matt Walsh is a political commentator who wrote that the real source of Lindsay's depression was a selfish hatred of her children. Neither has examined her or testified."Sick of her kids" isn't a fringe idea, though. It's the prosecution's theory in plainer words. Prosecutors told the jury Lindsay was controlling and killed the children because she was no longer satisfied with her life. That's a claim being weighed, and the jury hasn't ruled on it."Psychopath" is something else entirely, and the difference is the whole trial. A psychopath knows exactly what's real and doesn't care. Psychosis means losing track of what's real. The defense experts diagnosed postpartum psychosis. The prosecution's experts rejected that and said major depression or bipolar II.
