Cyberstalking: Vulnerability & Power of Choice

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 5, 2019 28:56

Note: This episode might contain triggering content for some audience members. This month in The School of Bravery we've been focusing on the bravery ingredient of POWER OF CHOICE, while last month we covered VULNERABILITY. Both topics relate to what I want to bring up with you today... Cyberstalking. This is one of the rawest and un-edited podcast episodes I've ever published. There is crying in this episode, but you'll also hear hope and thankfully, power of choice. I've been silent on this podcast and on social media for very good reason recently. But the metaphorical duct tape needed to come off today because 1) I'm going into the studio to record my next album and I wanted you to know and 2) because it was time to let you know what really happened since I returned home from my last round of travels...  If you or someone you know could use a boost or a new perspective on stalking, stalkers, and cyberstalking -- please send them my way. I don't know everything, but I do know that it is very serious (often deadly) and can rattle even the strongest among us. Here's to finding the safety we need and to taking the duct tape of fear off our mouths. Here's to greater visibility, mental health for all, and not letting fear stop us. Here's to bravery feeling easier every single day. About The School of Bravery The School of Bravery is a learning lab for life, career, and creativity. Through monthly masterclasses, guest experts, weekly office hours and so much more, you'll explore what it really means to "put yourself out there" and how bravery does not have to feel like a panic attack. It can feel easier! Visit http://schoolofbravery.com for more info! Mackenzie Spear - Live Sound & Mix Engineer

Did you know that only 5% of audio engineers are female? This is tragic. Can you just imagine the get-it-done, super-rad albums haven't been made yet?! Mackenzie Spear and I met through the glorious thing that is social media. There's this not-so-secret Facebook group for Nashville Music Women and it's been an amaaaazing resource to have as a new Nashville resident. Especially, as someone who wants to see that previously mentioned percentage change drastically, preferably as soon as possible. I wanted to work with Mackenzie as my mixing engineer on Covered in Clover for several reasons: She has a background as a trumpet player, so I knew she'd know how to (and really enjoy) mixing all the layers of horns on this album. She helps balance out the gender inequality that I was painfully aware of from day one, even in my own project! (This is a topic I care deeply about.) She's easy to work with. She's really good at her job. We talk about all of that in this episode, but also.... this conversation happened right before she headed out to support the band The War and Treaty (they're so great! check them out!) on a month-long festival tour to help them with their live sound. Bonus! She and I will meet up at the last day of their tour because I get to perform at that same festival! So fun! I'm so looking forward to working with Mackenzie again and more female audio pros like her. If you're in the music realm already, enjoy listening to a new perspective! If you're in the audience realm, get ready to hear how everything magically gels together! ___________ Never Miss an Episode! Coltan Foster - Bassoonist & Advocate for Arts Education

This episode features Coltan Foster, bassoonist extraordinaire and supreme advocate for arts education. When I began my album Covered in Clover, I just *knew* it would have bassoon. So Coltan was the first phone call I made to ask if he'd be willing help with this project. I admire Coltan so much. His perseverance, vulnerability, and authenticity are so crucial to not only being a decent human being, but also an excellent musician. When he and I recorded Covered in Clover, he had just graduated with his Bachelor's, not quite sure where to go next, and still not completely comfortable in his own skin. When he and I spoke for this episode about 4.5 years later, he was entering his 9th year of studying bassoon at a collegiate level, thriving in a musical community, and relieved to be out of a closet he never really knew he was in. I think you'll find this episode to be a bright spot in your day and a reminder that living "in the in-between" can have a lot of power and bring a lot of healing. Please go take a minute to visit Coltan's projects below. I'm really so glad you get to meet him and get to know a bassoonist today! ___________ Never Miss an Episode! This episode features Gary Mula, the co-producer and audio engineer for my latest release, Covered in Clover. I came to him looking for a safe person to try out my ideas. He was an absolute joy to work with and I highly recommend working with him to anyone looking for an experience (co)producer with an ample amount of experience in the Seattle music scene. In today's episode, we discussed what that working relationship was like, how it was to bring in so many musicians for this album, how the Seattle music scene has changed (or not changed), and what our various new projects look like now that almost 5 years have passed since we recorded these tracks!  Please go take a minute to visit his website and check out his other projects. I'm so glad you get to meet him and get to know him more today! ___________ Never Miss an Episode! Join Emily Ann's Inner Circle: http://emilyannpeterson.com/join

This episode features Mandy Troxel, a singer-songwriter and dear friend of mine from Orcas Island, WA. I asked her to be the first episode of these conversations discussing my latest album release, Covered in Clover, because she witnessed each version of the evolution of these songs over the last 5 years. Please go take a minute to visit her website below and check out her music. She's brilliant and I'm so glad you get to meet her and get to know her more today!   The music mentioned in today's episode: https://fanlink.to/eap-cic http://mandytroxel.com     ___________ Subscribe & Join Emily Ann's Inner Circle: http://emilyannpeterson.com/join
