In this unforgettable episode of the HappyCast, hosts Andrew, Dylan, and Stephanie welcome Canadian ultrarunner and mental health advocate Evan Birch, along with his trail-blazing running partner: his seven-year-old Vizsla, Nova. Together, Evan and Nova recently attempted the Orcas Island 100, marking what may be one of the first sanctioned 100-mile ultramarathon efforts by a human-canine team. Their story—captured in the upcoming documentary Supernova: The 100-Mile Dog—goes far beyond finish lines.Evan takes us through the years of preparation that led to this moment, from choosing Nova as a pup specifically for the trails, to learning how to communicate without words, to tailoring training and gear for the unique demands of ultrarunning with a dog. The conversation dives into the bond they've built over hundreds of miles and the sheer trust it takes to tackle such a challenge together.Beyond the race, this episode is a powerful reflection on mental health, identity, and resilience. Evan opens up about his background in emergency services, his own struggles, and how trail running—and Nova—became a path toward healing. Raw, thoughtful, and deeply inspiring, this episode is a reminder that sometimes, the journey isn't just about covering ground—it's about who we become along the way.ultrabirch.comBe sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. The James Beard Award has been a kingmaker in the food business since the 1980s. Even getting a nomination can be life-changing. Chef Jay Blackinton – a punk musician and self-described wannabee skateboarder – has been nominated seven times. He’s self-taught and runs a buzzy two-man kitchen on Orcas Island. And this year, he’s been named a James Beard Award finalist in the Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific category. Seattle restaurants Archipelago and Atoma are also finalists in the Outstanding Hospitality and Best New Restaurant categories, respectively. Not a single eatery from Washington state has taken home the big prize in the past three years. If Chef Blackinton wins, it could change the fate of his restaurant, which is both nurtured and challenged by its remote location. Guest: Jay Blackinton is the head chef at Houlme in Eastsound on Orcas Island, and is a James Beard Award Finalist for Best Chef: Northwest and Pacific category Thank you to the supporters of KUOW, you help make this show possible! Hello to you listening on Orcas Island, Washington!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.I volunteer as a story docent at Admiralty Head Lighthouse. Sailing in from the Pacific Ocean through the treacherous Strait of San Juan de Fuca ship captains would look for the blazing lighthouse beacon 127 feet above Admiralty Inlet warning them to steer a hard right to starboard, avoid the cliffs, and continue safely south to Puget Sound and on into Seattle, Washington. How did the captain know he was seeing Admiralty Head Lighthouse? Each lighthouse - no matter where in the world - has its very own distinctive light pattern, or signature. Like your fingerprints. Lighthouses mark points of navigation, warn about dangerous coastlines, and guide boats into safe harbor. But no one harbor serves all boats. Different boats - different harbors. Lighthouses don't chase boats; why do you chase clients?Ask yourself: What is it only you have to offer? Who needs it and wants it? How will you attract your particular client with your own distinctive beacon of light? And, how will they know you are signaling them? Once you have your answers, you will be well on your way to business success. In this episode we delve into the astonishing, adrenaline-fueled life of Colton Harris-Moore, infamously known as the "Barefoot Bandit." From his less than idyllic childhood and rocky homelife on Camano Island of Washington state to becoming a modern-day folk hero to some, and a juvenile con-artist skilled at escaping the consequences of his crimes to many others, Colton's story is one for the books. We follow his jaw-dropping crime spree involving stolen cars, boats, and even planes! How did a teenage runaway, with no formal flight training, manage to elude law enforcement after committing numerous crimes on Orcas Island and elsewhere in the Pacific Northwest, fly across state lines, and eventually flee the US altogether to evade capture for so long?We discuss his many infamous, and (literal) barefoot getaways, the media frenzy surrounding him, and the multiple shocking crash landings prior to his capture. He evaded authorities on both continental, and tropical, international islands from the San Juan Islands of the Puget Sound to the more densely populated Abaco, on to Eleuthra, and the pink sand beaches of Harbour Island. For true crime fanatics this episode has it all—daring escapes, FBI manhunts, and even a dramatic boat chase as Colton continued his criminal antics and island-hopping ways in the Bahamas! Join Ben, Brian, and Ted as they explore unique flying adventure ideas that go beyond the typical "$100 hamburger" flight. From discovering hidden gems like Alabama's Ave Maria Grotto to planning hobby-based trips (like flying for 25 cent blackberries), the guys share inspiration for memorable flights. Amidst the hangar talk, you'll hear tales of airport fence jumping, "information whiskey" style tangents, and Ted's inability to pronounce "fly fly fly fishing." Brian also resurrects his dream to visit Tangier Island before it's underwater. 100th episode is coming up! Oct 28, 4G7 Fairmont West Virginia. This disc is subtitled "Music Changing with the price of Gold. An environment of continuous electronic music created through a programming residency at Engine 27, New York City. Please play softly.” 08:13 05:42 2. Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, “Who I Am & Why I Am Where I Am” from The Kid (2017 Western Vinyl). Composed, produced, and performed by Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith. Flute and computer programming, Barbara Held; Computer Programming, processing, and mixed by Tom Hamilton; synthesizer voices designed by Robert Ashley and Tom Hamilton; composed by Robert Ashely. Ashley was mostly known for his modern operas composed of dialog and new music. As a result, this instrumental work may not be what you expect from him. Superior Seven dates from 1988, just after the introduction of MIDI. Ashley fully explored MIDI for this work, writing a solo flute part with piano and a MIDI orchestra. Music was written for a flute player and pianist and audible cues triggered the engagement of MIDI instrumental parts controlled by a participating electronic musician (Hamilton). I saw this performed live and the results were startling. 30:15 34:16 Opening background music: Tom Hamilton, “Region 6” (excerpt) from Sebastian's Shadow (1997 Monroe Street Music). Jess Vanderbush has many interests, she is an ultra-runner, poet, and documentary filmmaker, she is also the founder, editor-in-chief, and creative director of Eat Clean Run Dirty magazine. She is seeking adventure and connection everywhere she goes. This was a fun conversation full of wisdom and captivating stories. Jess has many interests, we spent time diving into several of them. A crazy plane crash near Orcas Island took the life of Apollo 8 astronaut Bill Anders on Friday. He lived an amazing life!
Today's episode is a new interview with Michael Judd, recorded by Mary Marshall and Andrew Tuttle, of Edge Perma. During this conversation, Michael shares a quick sketch of his background for listeners who aren't familiar with him and his work, including time at the Bullock's Permaculture Homestead Brother's Farm on Orcas Island in Washington State. Michael then leads us through how he came to his permaculture career and how suggestions on how he makes it work for him and his family, from his early days as an edible landscaper and designer to his current role as a nurseryman, educator, and an event planner focusing on regenerative systems and education. Throughout, he shares stories and personal anecdotes as only he can. Ten years ago, in 2014, I traveled from my home in Pennsylvania and journeyed down to Michael's family home and homestead to record my first in-person interview, ever, with him, meeting his wife, and his son Wyatt, who was still a babe in arms at the time. Since then, we've recorded multiple interviews together, he was a keynote speaker at the Mid-Atlantic Permaculture Convergence, and I've attended his Paw Paw festival. Throughout this decade knowing Michael, personally and professionally, what I've always loved is his ability to take what he knows, examine where his life is at the moment, decides where he wants to go, and pivots in that direction. However he changes his life he does that with intent, while remaining rooted in his mindset as a permaculture practitioner and the lessons he learned during his time in Nicaragua with Project Bona Fide. If you're working on the next steps of your journey, I highly recommend listening to Michael's earlier conversations with me and hear more about his journey. You'll find numerous useful insights that connect to the ones he shared today, that you can apply to your journey, wherever you want to go. #093 - The echoes of tragedy often linger long after the event has passed, but my guests Laura Hall and Sarah Bush have discovered a powerful form of healing that propels them forward—literally. In the wake of the Columbine High School shooting, these sisters found themselves grappling with the weight of trauma and its silent aftermath. Together, we take an intimate look at their emotional journey, discussing how running became their shared lifeline, a rhythmic therapy for body and soul. Their story is a testament to resilience and the unspoken strength that can be found in the steadfast companionship of siblings. As we lace up and hit the pavement, Laura and Sarah reveal how their love for running transcended the confines of high school cross country, blossoming into a passion for marathons and the wild freedom of trail running. The sisters take us through the streets of the world's most iconic cities, past the finish lines of the Boston and New York Marathons, and onto the rugged paths of the Orcas Island 50k. Their narrative isn't just about endurance—it's about the transformative power of shared adventures and the unique bond that forms when you push your limits side by side.I close the episode with a heartfelt appreciation for Laura and Sarah, who have generously peeled back the layers of their lives as runners, mothers, and sisters, sharing both their struggles and triumphs. Season 2 Ep 5 of the Travels With Randy Podcast is here! The fellas had 2 different adventures this week: Randy spent the weekend on Orcas Island in the San Juan Island chain north of Seattle. It was cold, but Snuffy kept him nice and warm. He talks about the island in detail and also posts a huge set of AMAZING pictures on the Travels With Randy Facebook page that everyone should see. On the other coast, Bubba and Mrs. Bubba spent a day exploring the Blue Ridge Parkway near Blowing Rock, NC. along with just about every other person in North Carolina. It was super crowded but that didn't detract from the stunning beauty of the fall leaves at peak season in the mountains. Bubba ALSO posted a set of photos of the trip on the Facebook page. The fellas also discuss Bubba's two yipper dogs and Randy's family dogs - next week Randy is taking his son's dog with him in Snuffy to explore Whidbey Island just south of the San Juans. Of course, the two old coots also chat about the weather lol. Join the fun on Facebook! https://www.facebook.com/travelswithrandypodcast Have an idea for the show? Want to sponsor us? Season 2 Episode 4 of the Travels With Randy podcast is here! In this episode, Randy and Bubba stay put for this week and plan their next adventures. Randy will spend the weekend with Snuffy on the San Juan Islands and Bubba and Mrs. Bubba plan to hit the Blue Ridge Parkway near Asheville, NC to see the stunningly beautiful fall foliage of the mountains during peak season. Randy totally has a case of VanLife fever and has taken several trips this week in his van just to explore the beautiful scenery up north of Seattle. He's also hit Costco and bought all the food he will need for the trip this weekend. Bubba talks about his son Connor's visit home after moving to Las Vegas and what a great week it's been showing him off to different family members. Connor is enjoying Vegas quite a bit, although he still prefers the greenery and foliage of North Carolina to the desert. It's also a bit of a bummer when it hits 115 degrees there. This is the story of a mysterious fish that washed up on Orcas Island on July 11, 2023. When I first ran the Leadville Trail 100 in the early 90s, and for many years afterward, there had never been a finisher younger than 23 years old. A few had unsuccessfully tried, but it was considered too much of an endeavor for a younger person to do the necessary training for an ultramarathon. But then along came Clare Gallagher and Annie Hughes, major race winners and record-setters in their early 20s. In 2019, I ran the start-to-May Queen stretch of the LT100 alongside college senior Harrison Hornung, actually named after the main drag in Leadville, who was attempting to complete Leadman, which he did. There's no doubt the demographics in ultramarathons have trended younger, yet I was pretty surprised when I was up at the LT100 this year and saw that there were 4 or 5 runners in the 18-19 year old division. Alden Iselin of Newton MA just graduated from high school and impressively finished in 29:11:33. I was curious what made this young man tick, and what I discovered is an energetic 18-year old who is eager to explore new places and challenges, and who wants to help others seek similar goals. He is relatively new to the ultrarunning world, too, having only run his first 50-miler in NH in October. In February, he completed the rugged Orcas Island 100-miler, which was complicated by bad weather, precipitating a 12-hour start time delay. His time there was more than 32 hours. I greatly enjoyed hearing about what sparked his interest in ultrarunning, his training, the challenges he has faced in his nascent ultrarunning career, what he learned in these first experiences, and about his extraordinary focus for an 18-year old. Alden might be a future star, and you heard him first on the WASP!Alden IselinInstagram and Strava @aldeniselinBill Stahlsilly_billy@msn.comFacebook Bill StahlInstagram @stahlor and @coachstahlYouTube We Are Superman Podcast

Soon after the news broke, Swimrunners from all over the world began paying tribute to their legacy and impact both within the sport of Swimrun and their environmental work. A few days after this announcement, ÖTILLÖ issued a press release stating that Staffan Björklund will act as the new race director for the company. According to the release: “Staffan's experience in the Swimrun sport is extensive. He worked at the very first ÖTILLÖ event in 2006, won ÖTILLÖ Utö in 2013, and raced ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship, seven times.”While it certainly feels like an important chapter in the history of the sport that we all love is ending, we remain hopeful for the future as this new chapter begins. As it always has been, it's up to all of us to continue what Michael and Mats started 17 years ago and work with Staffan and the rest of the team at ÖTILLÖ and keep growing our community. Finally, on a programming note, we are planning on interviewing Staffan for the show soon so stay tuned for that conversation. That's it for this week. Julie Brunner is the housing director at OPAL, a community land trust on Orcas Island in Washington state. Julie has worked in the field of affordable housing since the mid-90s and today OPAL is responsible for housing 200 families on an island with a population of just 5,000. Over the years, both through hot and cold real estate markets, they've found innovative ways to finance and offer housing, both through home ownership and renting. Julie and show host Neal discuss the mechanics of community land trusts, the huge benefits to those housed through the program, and the important differences between offering properties to own and to rent. A former economics major, Julie explains how America's housing crisis is not simply a supply issue and she details how OPAL has managed to offer financial security to people on an island with some of Washington's highest property values and lowest wages. To learn more about her work, check out the OPAL website as well as the Grounded Solutions Network, where she teaches courses on community land trusts.
Welcome to episode 157 of the Löw Tide Böyz - A Swimrun Podcast!Happy New Year everyone! In our annual tradition of setting the bar way too high for ourselves, we have a great show lined up to kick off 2023. Joining us this week are the 2022 World Champions and the only Men's team to go undefeated in every event of the ÖTILLÖ World Series. Of course we are talking about none other than Hugo Tormento and Max Andersson, A.K.A., Team Ark Swimrun Hugo and Max. This was a super fun conversation and we can't wait to share it with all of you.But first…Training UpdateWe're still in off-season mode but our race calendar is starting to come together and it looks like our first Swimrun event will be in May at Bend Racing's new Sunriver Swimrun in Bend, Oregon.ShoutoutsIn our Gear of the Year Awards episode with the Swimrun Labs we put out a call for gear ideas that don't exist yet and we got some awesome responses. We will save the details for the next edition of Gear Talk but we wanted to shoutout some of the folks that had great/creative/violative of the laws of physics/genius ideas. In no particular order: shoutouts to Katie, Pepe, Brendan, Henrik (a.k.a. Swimrun Pappa), Naomi, and Matt.Feats of EnduranceThis week's Feats of Endurance winner is Vlad Caireac. He posted a workout from his native Moldova. He is our first Strava Club member from this Eastern European country and we're here for it! Thanks for joining the club.Make sure to sign up for our LTBz Strava Club (which just passed 500 members!!!) and join Swimrunners from around the world as they train for stuff. This Week in SwimrunWe are going to get back into the swing of things for this segment but wanted to share a quick update on our plans for the show in 2023. Last year we focused a lot on our own Swimrun journey to ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship with our Countdown to ÖTILLÖ series and while we are planning on heading back to Sweden this year for another bite at that apple (if we re-qualify), we aren't planning on emphasizing our personal journey as much. Rather, we are re-focusing on helping grow the sport and showcase why we think that the sport is so great and why everyone with any propensity for swimming and running should try it. In that vein, we will be producing more "course preview" episodes for races on our bucket list, since living vicariously is the best we can hope for given our family and work responsibilities. We will also be producing more content specifically for beginners that we will be featuring in our IG and YouTube feeds. Now for the “news.”In the bummer department, Ödyssey Swimrun recently announced that their Coastal Dunes race which was scheduled for early March was forced to be canceled due to permitting issues. All registered participants have been notified. In other (non-bummer) Ödyssey news, they have opened registration for all their 2023 events which include Casco Bay, Mackinac Island, Orcas Island, and Austin. If that wasn't enough for you, registration for all their events is 30% off through the month of January! Time for a short PSA: As someone who's worked in the endurance space for almost a decade I can tell you that putting on races, and especially Swimrun events, is a painstaking and expensive process with very little guarantee of success early on and most races are, in effect, crowdsourced by registration revenue. Registering early (and often) helps make sure that the events that we know and love keep happening year after year. Moral of the story, register for your Swimrun events early, save money, and help race directors put on amazing events.Over in Sweden, ÖTILLÖ announced that their Isles of Scilly event will not take place in 2023. They also mentioned that a new race destination will be announced in like 100 days from now. Our investigative team is hard at work trying to figure out the destination and so far we are pretty sure that the event will be in the Northern Hemisphere. More details forthcoming on that!In other ÖTILLÖ news, registration for the 2023 ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship via Swimrun ranking points is open! The registration window is open until January 20, 2023 and teams will be informed on February 2nd (Swimrun Christmas) on whether they will be spending a 9 months obsessing about the Stockholm Archipelago. Finally, want to hang out and train with one of the best Swimrun coaches in the world? Nicolas Remires of Envol Swimrun is hosting a training camp at the Playitas Resort on Fuerteventura from January 30-February 6th. Just google the location and you'll want to attend. Reach out to Envol Coaching for more information about that camp.Show BusinessAs you heard at the beginning of the show, the people have spoken and apparently we are the winner's of Swimrun.com's 2022 Maven Award (for Individual(s) who have widened participation, awareness and growth of the sport.) Thank you to everyone that voted, we are truly humbled that our brand of super niche content has an audience and that people find it helpful. The 2022 World Champions: Team Ark Swimrun Hugo and MaxWhat can we say about Hugo and Max that isn't inundated with superlatives? They had an incredible 2022 Swimrun season where they won every race that they entered, set the course record at ÖTILLÖ, The Swimrun World Championship in a commanding fashion, and all the while being great ambassadors for the sport. In this conversation we chatted with them about how they teamed up, how they trained and managed to prepare for a busy racing season, we got mini-race reports from their World Series races and, of course, discussed their record-breaking performance at ÖTILLÖ. As we mentioned at the outset, we may have set the bar too high for ourselves…Enjoy our conversation with Hugo and Max, reigning World Champions and all around amazing human beings. That's it for this week's show.
