When Benjamin Franklin's Ghost Designed a Machine and the strange story of The Underwater Orchestra. What happens when people become convinced they can build a messiah out of magnets, copper, and electricity? In this episode of *The Box of Oddities, Kat and JG dive into one of the strangest forgotten chapters in American history: the bizarre true story of John Murray Spear's "New Motive Power," an electrical machine that followers believed would be born* rather than switched on. Guided by séances, messages from the spirits of Benjamin Franklin and other historical figures, and a ceremony that mimicked childbirth, Spear attempted to create a living mechanical redeemer decades before robots, computers, or artificial intelligence existed. It's an astonishing tale of Spiritualism, Victorian science, religious belief, and humanity's enduring obsession with creating life. Then the conversation heads beneath the waves to one of the world's most unusual festivals. Every year, divers descend on *Looe Key Reef in the Florida Keys for the Lower Keys Underwater Music Festival*, where ocean-themed music is broadcast underwater while mermaids, pirates, and "fish musicians" celebrate one of North America's most important coral reefs. Beneath the quirky spectacle lies an inspiring story about coral conservation, marine biology, and the creative ways people are fighting to protect one of Earth's most fragile ecosystems. From electrical messiahs and nineteenth-century spiritualists to underwater concerts and living coral cities, this episode explores two extraordinary stories that prove reality is often stranger than fiction. If you've ever stepped in to “help” your child and realized you might be making things worse, this conversation will hit home. On this episode of The Brainy Moms Podcast, Dr. Amy sits down with Dr. Josh McConkey, an emergency physician, former U.S. Air Force commander, and author of Be the Weight Behind the Spear, to talk about a problem many families feel but can't always name: kids can't build confidence and grit if adults remove every hard moment. We dig into the shift from helicopter parenting to “lawn mower parenting,” why it fuels fear of failure, and how resilience grows when kids are allowed to fail safely. Dr. Amy brings in self-efficacy and the power of the feedback loop after a setback, while Dr. Josh shares how leadership starts at home with small habits like a dinner table family debrief: what went well, what didn't, and what we learned. We also talk about co-regulation, emotional honesty, and how to decide when to step in versus letting natural consequences do their work. You'll hear real-world stories about integrity, accountability, and what it means to take responsibility without slipping into victim mentality. We also explore why face-to-face mentoring through coaches, teachers, volunteering, youth sports, and community service matters more than ever in a screen-heavy world, especially as anxiety and depression rise among kids and teens. If you want practical parenting strategies for raising leaders, teaching accountability, and building resilient kids who can handle real life, press play. Evan Koster has guided archery elk hunts in Colorado's Flat Tops for over a decade. This conversation covers everything that actually matters going into an archery elk season — and plenty of what hunters think matters that doesn't.Colorado is in a historic drought, and Evan breaks down what that means for where elk will be in September — it's not about elevation, it's about feed quality, and aspens are the answer. From there we get into how to search unknown country efficiently, why elevation and trailhead distance are myths that kill more hunts than help them, and Evan's counterintuitive wind rule: he doesn't think about it until he's within 500 yards. We dig into the stalk psychology mistake most hunters make, how to locate elk with a bugle using line-of-sight, how to read a bull's commitment level, and the one-sentence answer Evan would give any archer who wanted to kill more elk: take chances. We close on the honest reality of horseback elk hunting. In this episode:Colorado drought 2027 — what it means for elk distribution in SeptemberFeed quality over elevation — why aspens are the concentration zone in a dry yearHow to search unknown country vs. country you knowThe elevation myth and the trailhead distance myth — both cost hunters elkWind: the 500-yard rule and why most hunters have the psychology completely backwardsBugling as a two-way radio — why line-of-sight matters for locating elkWhen to move on from a spot and when to go back in closeThe one thing Evan would change about any archer to make them more successfulHorseback elk reality — "don't, unless you're already into horses"Booking 2027 hunts with LKS Outfitters nowGuest: Evan Koster — Lead guide, LKS Outfitters / Flat Tops Wilderness Guides.ftguides.comhttps://www.instagram.com/flattopswildernessguides/---FOLLOW CLIFFYouTube - https://www.youtube.com/c/CliffGrayInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/Cliffgry/Facebook - https://facebook.com/PursuitWithCliffPursuit With Cliff Podcasthttps://pursuitwithcliff.com/interviews-and-podcasts/Cliff's Hunt Planning and Strategy Membership https://pursuitwithcliff.com/membership/Hunt. John Murray Spear and his followers have built their “mechanical messiah.” There's just one problem: it won't move. In the conclusion to Spear's excellent adventure, the spirit of Benjamin Franklin guides the “Motorists” through increasingly elaborate attempts to bring the “Electrical Infant” to life. These include a copper-and-zinc wizard suit, a proposed worldwide network of telepathic transmission towers, powdered metals, personal magnetism, soul blending, and the spiritual labor of medium Sarah Newton., newspapers erupt, and P.T. Barnum raises the obvious question: who is the father? The machine finally twitches, but many, including P.T. Barnum, are less than impressed. Jack follows the New Motor's journey through “wombific” processes, free-love theology, public scandal, exile, and its alleged destruction by a gang of young Baptists. Spear moves on to spirit-designed sewing machines, an electrically powered ship modeled after a duck, and a new doctrine of “True Marriage.” Jack also digs into the 2019 claim that the long-lost Mechanical Messiah had been discovered in a Colorado attic and the professional hoax engineer behind the story. This episode breaks down what that deployment actually looked like on the ground, how amphibious forces were trained and positioned to identify, track, and interdict heavily armed cartel networks operating across open water and coastal terrain where the threat picture changes faster than any fixed intelligence product can capture, and what the operational lessons from Southern Spear reveal about the future of situational awareness in counter-narcotics and hemispheric defense missions. If you want to understand how elite military units read and respond to a living, breathing narco threat environment in America's own backyard, this episode gives you the inside account of what that looks like when it is actually executed at scale. This week, Jack begins the strange saga of John Murray Spear: Universalist preacher, abolitionist, prison reformer, anti-death-penalty agitator, spiritual medium, and eventual would-be midwife to a “mechanical messiah.” Before Spear tried to build the “New Motor” (a living machine meant to channel divine electricity and inaugurate a new age) he spent decades pursuing radical reform in 19th-century New England. Jack traces Spear's working-class childhood, his years in the Universalist movement, his “missions of love” to prisoners and the poor, his work against capital punishment, his involvement with abolitionism and the Underground Railroad, and the mob beating that nearly killed him in Portland. Then things get weirder. Enter the unfortunately-named Andrew Jackson Davis, Emanuel Swedenborg, the Fox Sisters, mesmeric trances, automatic writing, spirit healing, Benjamin Franklin from beyond the grave, psychometry, sulfur springs, and the “Association of Electricizers.” By the end of Part 1 of our story, Spear has been selected by a committee of dead reformers, scientists, and Founding Fathers to help remake the world through electricity, spirit communication, and one very important machine in a tower in Lynn, Massachusetts. In this episode, MWI's Dr. Charlie Faint speaks with Captain Francis Ambrogio, an Army armor officer, West Point graduate, and observer, coach, trainer (OCT) at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC) in Hohenfels, Germany, to discuss how the Army is preparing for the realities of modern warfare. Drawing on experiences ranging from his service as a tank platoon leader in Korea and an aide-de-camp to a general officer to his time as a troop commander in the 10th Mountain Division and his current role as an OCT, Francis explains the unique role of the JMRC in training US and allied forces alongside NATO partners and Ukrainian forces. He shares insights into the rapid integration of drones, artificial intelligence, multinational interoperability, and the persistent challenges of the modern battlefield, including command post operations, staff proficiency, and mastering increasingly complex technology. Throughout the conversation, Francis emphasizes that success in future conflict still depends on timeless fundamentals: treating training as real, mastering the basics, building trust, listening to subordinates, and constantly learning from both allies and past experience to prepare leaders and formations for the next fight. She was reported missing by her mother when she failed to arrive home after school at the expected time. After checking with neighbors, Laralee's mother learned that she had last been seen getting off her school bus, which was only a ten-minute walk from the family's home. A quick search ensued, but it ended tragically. More than three decades later, Laralee's murder remains unsolved, with no known persons of interest.   Sources: https://www.fdle.state.fl.us/news/2024/september/fdle-vso-help-solve-the-laralee-spear-cold-case   https://www.facebook.com/Mizzle20/posts/%EF%B8%8F-justice-for-laralee-30-years-later-%EF%B8%8Finvestigators-in-volusia-county-florida-ar/1488187345999812/   https://www.youtube.     Join The Dark Oak Discussion: Patreon The Dark Oak Podcast Website Facebook Instagram Twitter TikTok Youtube This episode of The Dark Oak was created, researched, written, recorded, hosted, edited, published, and marketed by Cynthia and Stefanie of Just Us Gals Productions with artwork by Justyse Himes and Music by Ryan Creep

Brian Gilroy runs Wildlife Partners, the largest exotic animal breeding operation in North America and a Cape buffalo herd that didn't exist in private hands a decade ago. He's also hunted Dall sheep in remote Alaska, muskox on Nunivak Island, and elk in New Mexico. This episode is a reality check on how the hunting industry actually works and why the free-range vs. high-fence moral war is mostly mythology from Brian's perspective.Texas is now on South Africa's radar as a direct competitor. Same animals, same large high-fence model, no 13-hour flight, five-star lodges, and populations of kudu, Cape buffalo, sable, and ibex growing every year. Brian explains the economics of exotic breeding as a tax strategy (why a self-reproducing kudu cow beats a tractor), why CWD has made native cervid breeding almost impossible, why put-and-take hunting is a dead model, and what a Wyoming or New Mexico application really costs over a lifetime. The episode closes with Brian's Alaska sheep story... the outfitter who knew every animal, flew him to the sheep, and pointed him at it. The honest question: why is that different from hunting 15,000 acres in Texas?Texas vs. South Africa — why SA should be genuinely worriedCape buffalo in TexasKudu, sable, red deer: population growth and what hunts will cost in five yearsWhy CWD killed native cervid breeding and exotics filled the gapExotic breeding as a business — 100% depreciation on an animal that reproduces itselfThe real cost of a sheep draw, a BC Dall sheep, or a New Mexico applicationThe Alaska sheep story and why free range is less pure than most hunters believeGuest: Brian Gilroy — CEO, Wildlife Partners. Why did the Romans completely abandon the spear in favour of the pilum? Does it function effectively as a thrusting weapon as well as a thrown weapon? If you have a space for a two-for, do you have time to talk about the comparative effectiveness of slings vs bows in the classical world? When did slings drop out of use in organised warfare? That's probably three, but you've made the mistake of being highly accessible and willing to take a crack at all sorts of topics." Join us on Patreon patreon.com/ancientwarfarepodcast

Most people aren't "failing" keto or carnivore – they're being failed by bad advice, social pressure, and half-truths about what ketosis and red meat actually do to the human body. In this episode of The Plant Free MD, I sit down with British and European Pro Bodybuilding Champion Richard Smith to pull back the curtain on the latest wave of influencers loudly "quitting" keto and carnivore, and what's really going on behind those dramatic announcement videos. What this episode exposes: - Why claims that ketosis "wrecks your hormones," "destroys your thyroid," or "fries your adrenals" collapse when you actually look at human physiology and clinical data. - The real reasons some big-name influencers are jumping ship: algorithm chasing, brand pivots, and trying to market to a wider audience, not because meat suddenly stopped working. - The difference between a well-formulated carnivore/keto diet and the ultra-lean, under-eating, "cheat day" versions that predictably make people feel awful and then get blamed on the diet instead of the execution. Who we are: I'm Dr Anthony Chaffee, medical doctor, former professional rugby player, and host of The Plant Free MD – a science-based, hard-facts podcast digging into optimal human nutrition, performance, and reversing chronic disease with a species-appropriate diet. Richard Smith is a British and European Pro bodybuilding champion who rebuilt his health and physique using keto and carnivore and now teaches evidence-based nutrition full time. Together, we cut through the noise, marketing, and fearmongering to focus on what actually works in the real world. Why you should watch: - You're confused by conflicting messages about meat, cholesterol, ketones, and long-term safety. - You've seen influencers "coming out against" keto/carnivore and want to know if you should be worried – or just unsubscribed. - You want a clear, no-nonsense breakdown from people who've lived this way for years, use it clinically, and aren't pivoting their beliefs to match the latest trend. If you're tired of clickbait "I quit carnivore" thumbnails and want the unfiltered, science-based truth about meat, ketosis, and why this way of eating threatens a lot of powerful interests, this episode is for you.   Join my NEW 90-day Carnivore Challenge group on Mighty Networks below! https://dr-chaffee-s-90-day-carnivore-challenge.mn.co/landing/ If you liked this and want to learn more go to my new website www.DrAnthonyChaffee.com

After 25 years of studying health, disease, and human biology, I've come to a simple but uncomfortable conclusion: Most of what people are told about health is wrong. I'm a medical doctor with over a decade of clinical experience and more than 20 years immersed in research and education. I've worked with patients, studied the literature, and tested these principles in the real world. What I've found is that the biggest drivers of health aren't found in prescriptions or procedures, but in a handful of powerful, practical changes you can make yourself. In this video, I break down the exact strategies I use personally and recommend to patients to dramatically improve metabolic health, reduce inflammation, and lower the risk of chronic disease. These are simple, evidence-based interventions you can start at home, often with profound results. We're talking about: -Fixing the root causes of disease, not just managing symptoms -Reversing metabolic dysfunction through targeted nutrition -Understanding why modern lifestyles are making us sick -Taking back control of your health without relying on constant medical intervention This isn't about quick fixes or trends. It's about understanding how your body actually works and using that knowledge to your advantage. If you're tired of conflicting advice and want clear, science-based guidance that actually works, this is where you start. Subscribe for more deep dives into metabolic health, nutrition, and cutting through the noise.   Join my NEW 90-day Carnivore Challenge group on Mighty Networks below! https://dr-chaffee-s-90-day-carnivore-challenge.mn.co/landing/ If you liked this and want to learn more go to my new website www.DrAnthonyChaffee.com
