Last summer, bassoonist Brian Petkovich lost his job and then got a job that had never existed before. Not long after the San Antonio Symphony, with whom Brian played for 25 years, shut its doors, he became the inaugural president of the nascent San Antonio Philharmonic, which as of this writing is seven months old.For a brief moment in 2022, it seemed like San Antonio, the nation's seventh-largest city, might not have a major orchestra. The musicians of the San Antonio Symphony, protesting significant personnel and salary cuts demanded by the Board, had gone on strike in September of 2021, and nine months later, on June 16, 2022, the Symphony Society of San Antonio declared it was shutting down the 83-year-old institution for good, declaring a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. The musicians had not been idle throughout this tumult, however. They had founded the Musicians of the San Antonio Symphony (MOSAS) through which they raised private funds that allowed them to perform through the spring and early summer of 2022 in venues throughout the city. When the Symphony's demise was finalized, they set about creating a new permanent ensemble, appointing Brian as its president, and on September 16, 2022, the brand-new San Antonio Philharmonic played its first concert to a rapt audience at First Baptist Church of San Antonio. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti, Brian reveals some of the assumptions and miscalculations that led to the Symphony's dissolution and discusses his and his fellow musicians' dreams for how their new classical-music ensemble will serve San Antonio for years to come.https://saphil.org/team/brian-petkovich/

With a bachelor's degree from Juilliard and a doctorate in musical arts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Dr. Midori Samson is not only exquisitely trained in her instrument, the bassoon. Throughout her education she also studied social work, even minoring in the field as she earned her Ph.D. For Midori — who describes herself as equally a bassoonist, educator, activist and scholar — her commitment to equity and social inclusion is inseparable from her artistry. She is a longtime member of Arts Ignite, a non-profit that works with artists to unlock children's imaginations and potential. Arts Ignite works throughout the country and as far away as India and the Philippines. She is also the proud co-founder and artistic director of Trade Winds Ensemble, a group of professional musicians who teach workshops incorporating music composition, songwriting, interactive games and creative writing to children around the world. Midori's most recent educational foray abroad took place a few days after this interview when she flew to Turkey to take part in past Art Restart guest Sahba Aminikia's Flying Carpet Festival, where she was looking forward to creating music with refugee children. In this conversation with Pier Carlo Talenti, Midori explains why her musicianship relies on her social-justice work and vice-versa and discusses the many ways in which the teaching and performing of classical music could be transformed to be radically welcoming.https://www.midorisamson.com/https://artsignite.org/https://www.tradewindsensemble.org/

This episode features Coltan Foster, bassoonist extraordinaire and supreme advocate for arts education. When I began my album Covered in Clover, I just *knew* it would have bassoon. So Coltan was the first phone call I made to ask if he'd be willing help with this project. I admire Coltan so much. His perseverance, vulnerability, and authenticity are so crucial to not only being a decent human being, but also an excellent musician. When he and I recorded Covered in Clover, he had just graduated with his Bachelor's, not quite sure where to go next, and still not completely comfortable in his own skin. When he and I spoke for this episode about 4.5 years later, he was entering his 9th year of studying bassoon at a collegiate level, thriving in a musical community, and relieved to be out of a closet he never really knew he was in. I think you'll find this episode to be a bright spot in your day and a reminder that living "in the in-between" can have a lot of power and bring a lot of healing. Please go take a minute to visit Coltan's projects below. I'm really so glad you get to meet him and get to know a bassoonist today! ___________ Never Miss an Episode! He studied bassoon with Robert Ronnes, Dag Jensen, Ole K. Dahl and Klaus Thunemann. His YouTube channel has been awarded one of top 25 channels in the world and he tirelessly contributes to the bassoon world by his many arrangements, restorations and his research for extended technique, fingerings and his discoveries of unknown works. He became a Moosmann artist at age 26. Quote from interview: “I think that professionalism doesn’t automatically come with winning an audition.” Some topics we discuss: - the current conservatory education system and subjects conservatories Kristian feels conservatories should focus on to help students get a job. - The wide range of career options available now for a musician, besides the orchestral path. - an ideal practicing schedule, the importance of challenging oneself and pushing one against one’s limits. - The advice he received from Klaus Thunemann on practicing - Some of his personal audition tips and how to stand out from the crowd. - What motivates him - How we can promote the bassoon - Which composer he would like to have lunch with. - His interesting story of him playing Rite of Spring for the first time and the surprise guest in the audience. - His collaboration with Bernd Moosmann to develop the bassoon’s mechanic. With the exuberant Main Title still ringing in our ears, we turn our attention today to the many character themes that populate the underscore of John Williams' STAR WARS (1977). Examining this music uncovers a masterclass of melodic writing for film: from the short jingle-like motifs for the Rebel starships & Imperial soldiers to the lyrical, upward reaching anthems for Princess Leia and spiritual master Obi-wan Kenobi. We explore what each of these themes reveals of their characters, marveling at their ingenious & complementary expressions of rhythm, pitch, harmony and emotion. To help us in our discovery, we are joined by Dr. Jefferson Campbell, world-renowned Bassoonist and professor at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, where he continues to instruct on film music. Dr. Campbell is an authority on the music of the STAR WARS saga, frequently presenting his lecture "John Williams: The Other Star Wars Storyteller". With Dr. Campbell's help, we take a historical glance at the franchise, appreciating the seeds Williams plants in this first film - seeds he continues to water & nurture 40 years onward. We also delight in placing some attention on lesser-sung themes of this original film; equally memorable motives that never again appear in the saga (in fact, we even listen to Williams' unused first draft of an iconic character theme - a theme so appealing it found a happy home a few scores afterward). Join us as we continue to unearth John Williams incredible storytelling power in this landmark film. #maytheforcebewithyouListen to episode 7m2 The Themes of STAR WARSSTAR WARS - John Williams - 1977 - Lucasfilm Ltd./20th Century Fox (George Lucas, dir,)Star Wars: Suite for Orchestra - John Williams Signature Edition - Hal Leonard (conductor score)https://www.halleonard.com/product/viewproduct.action?itemid=4490057&lid=150&keywords=john%20williams%20signature&subsiteid=1&IMDBhttps://www.imdb.com/title/tt0076759/?ref_=nv_sr_5■ ■ ■For score reductions, additional links and more, the discussion continues at: www.underscorepodcast.com---------------------------------------------------------------------to support the show, please visit www.patreon.com/underscorepodcast
