Notes: Ms. Ayerza studied criminology, forensic behavioural sciences and psychology. Her early research examined eyewitness memory and the re-entry of exonerees before she became interested in cybercrime and cyberstalking. She was drawn to cybercrime because it is not limited to hacking, malware and phishing. Technology is part of everyday life through social media, email, dating apps and other commonly used services. Dating apps allow users to create profiles, specify the people and relationships in which they are interested and indicate interest in other users. When two users express an interest in one another, they can normally begin communicating through the app. Some dating apps are intended for broad audiences, while others serve particular lifestyles, interests or sexual orientations. Profiles are often presented as individual photographs or grids of photographs from which users make selections. Ms. Ayerza explains that dating apps are designed to make dating convenient and can feel like games. The superficial and rapid nature of matching can encourage users to make decisions based primarily on photographs. Harassment can arise when users send repeated messages in an effort to gain someone's attention. Some people may not recognize these repeated or unwanted communications as harassment. Users may also deliberately match with someone because they disagree with something in that person's profile and want an opportunity to criticize or harass them. Ms. Ayerza conducted an online survey of adult dating app users living in the United States. The study examined the information people included in their profiles, the photographs they shared and characteristics of the applications they used. The study considered whether users disclosed their relationship preferences, sexual orientation, workplace or occupation. It also examined whether they used their full name or an alternative name and whether their photographs included friends or family. Verification on dating apps can be a relatively superficial process in which a live photograph is compared with the photographs on a profile. Premium features may also allow users to change the location in which their profiles appear. Users often adopt their own protective measures, such as using pseudonyms or withholding photographs of their faces. However, designing effective technical safeguards is difficult because repeated messages can be part of both ordinary conversations and harassment. Most dating app users do not experience harassment, but Ms. Ayerza says that around a quarter of the users in the study experienced these forms of harm. The study did not compare victimisation across individual dating apps. Ms. Ayerza suggests that larger platforms may have more resources and face greater public pressure to introduce safeguards, while smaller platforms may have fewer resources. Sharing relationship or sexual orientation preferences was not found to increase risk. Ms. Ayerza suggests that these preferences help platforms present users with people who have similar interests without necessarily revealing where someone can be found. Including information about where a person works or studies increased risk. Photographs featuring friends or family also had an influence because they can reveal social connections and additional information about the user. Uploading photographs of one's face was not found to increase risk, possibly because facial photographs are a normal and often required part of using dating apps. Matching with someone under the age of 18 increased risk. Ms. Ayerza connects this finding to the limited measures used by dating apps to confirm that users are old enough to participate. One of the most surprising findings was that using a pseudonym or nickname increased risk. Ms. Ayerza discusses the possibility that an alternative name creates a false sense of security and encourages people to disclose more information. Ms. Ayerza advises users to think carefully about what they disclose. Preferences may be appropriate to share, while details about occupations, workplaces, friends and family may be better withheld until someone is known more closely. She emphasizes that responsibility should not be placed entirely on victims. People should understand that harassment is unacceptable and platform operators should do more to prevent and respond to harmful behaviour. Possible platform interventions include better reporting mechanisms and educational or training modules that users complete before creating a profile. Schools could help prepare young people to communicate appropriately on dating apps once they are old enough to use them. Ms. Ayerza also argues that governments should treat conduct on dating apps more seriously because every profile represents a real person. Future researchers need measures that reflect the activities people actually perform on dating apps. Greater consistency would also make it easier to compare findings across studies. Ms. Ayerza plans to examine offending as well as victimisation. Her future research will consider unwanted sexual messages, sexual violence and the experience of multiple forms of harm on dating apps. About our guest: Jennifer M. Divorce Cyberstalking: What to Do If You Think Your Ex Is Watching You OnlineDivorce Crash Course: Don't make expensive divorce mistakes. Our Divorce Crash Course walks you through the biggest legal, financial, emotional, and co-parenting mistakes people make during divorce — and how to avoid them.Typically priced at $150, available now for just $50, thanks to our angel underwriters, Our Family Wizard and Soberlink.Start the course here: https://www.hownottosuckatdivorce.com/divorce-crash-courseCyberstalking during divorce can make you feel unsafe, paranoid, unsteady, and completely overwhelmed. But here's the thing: sometimes what feels “crazy” is actually a real digital safety issue. In this episode of How Not to Suck at Divorce, Andrea Rappaport and Morgan L. Stogsdill are joined by Steven Bradley, a former FBI task force leader, cybersecurity expert, domestic violence specialist, and cyberstalking educator, to talk about what to do if you think your ex is watching, tracking, monitoring, or digitally harassing you during divorce. And yes — this episode is scary. But more importantly, it is actionable.Steven explains that cyberstalking is often easier than people realize because many exes already know your passwords, security question answers, shared devices, family routines, Wi-Fi setup, smart home devices, and personal information. Cyberstalking is not always some dramatic hacker-in-a-hoodie situation. Sometimes it is access to your Amazon Alexa, Ring doorbell, Nest thermostat, pet camera, cloud account, location sharing, shared passwords, or old devices. In other words: your ex may not need to “hack” you if they already have access.Terrifying? Yes. Useful to know? Also yes.In this episode, we cover:How cyberstalking can show up during divorceWhy many people dismiss early warning signs as “coincidences”How smart home devices can be used to monitor or harass someoneWhy shared passwords and security questions are a major riskWhat to do if you think your ex has access to your phone, email, cloud, or devicesWhy you should not delete suspicious messages or evidenceHow to create a timeline of cyberstalking concernsWhen to tell your divorce attorneyWhy co-parenting apps can help protect communicationHow VPNs, multi-factor authentication, and anti-malware tools can helpWhy public Wi-Fi can be riskyWhat parents should know about children's apps, gaming, and DiscordWhy taking action can lower paranoia and help you feel saferFirst signs of cyberstalking during divorceCyberstalking can start small. You may notice:strange text messagesanonymous calls or emailsyour ex showing up where you aresmart home devices acting strangelylights, thermostats, or cameras changing unexpectedlyunfamiliar apps on your phonelogin alertsodd account activitysomeone seeming to know things they should not knowSteven explains that many offenders start with small behaviors and escalate when they feel they can get away with it. That is why it is important not to dismiss everything as coincidence, especially during a high-conflict divorce or custody battle. What to do if you think you are being cyberstalkedSteven's first action step is simple:Do not delete anything.Preserve texts, emails, screenshots, suspicious messages, device alerts, app changes, login warnings, and anything that feels off. Create a timeline. Write down what happened, when it happened, where you were, and what evidence you have.Digital evidence can be time-sensitive, and some data may disappear or overwrite itself. The sooner you document, the better.Tell your divorce attorney earlyIf you believe you may be dealing with cyberstalking, do not wait until it becomes unbearable.Tell your attorney.Morgan explains that divorce lawyers may need outside experts to help connect the dots, preserve evidence, and explain what is happening in a way the court can understand. Cyberstalking can be technical, and many attorneys and judges are not cybersecurity experts. This is not about panicking. It is about protecting yourself, documenting what is happening, and getting the right people involved early.Secure your digital lifeSteven recommends assuming your passwords may be compromised and taking steps to secure your digital life. That may include:changing passwordschanging security questionsturning on multi-factor authenticationreviewing location sharingchecking Life360, Find My, Snap Maps, and similar appsauditing old accountsclosing accounts you no longer useusing anti-malware tools on phones and computersavoiding public Wi-Fi when possibleusing a reputable VPNchecking shared smart home devicesreviewing cloud accessremoving your ex from shared accounts and devicesAnd yes, this includes the things people forget about: Alexa, pet cameras, thermostats, doorbells, old apps, children's devices, shared family accounts, and even old platforms you forgot existed.Friendster, we are looking at you.Why co-parenting apps matterIf communication with your ex feels unsafe, chaotic, manipulative, or digitally risky, this may be a time to talk to your attorney about using a court-monitored co-parenting app.In this episode, Steven and Morgan discuss how a co-parenting app like Our Family Wizard can help keep communication contained, documented, and harder to manipulate. If you are concerned about cyberstalking or digital harassment, talk to your attorney about whether requesting a co-parenting app makes sense in your case. Our Family Wizard:www.ourfamilywizard.com/notsuck20How Not to Suck at Divorce listeners can save 20% off the Essentials package for the first year through our relationship with Our Family Wizard. The biggest takeawayTechnology is not the problem.Stalking, control, and harassment have existed forever. Technology just makes it easier. The goal is not to become paranoid. The goal is to become aware, document what is happening, and take action early. As Andrea says in this episode, doing nothing is often the part that makes you feel crazier. Taking action — documenting, telling your attorney, changing passwords, securing accounts, using a co-parenting app, and asking for help — can help you feel safer and more grounded. If something feels off, do not ignore it.Document it. Tell your attorney. Secure your devices. Get help early. You've got this. What’s been done in the 5 and half years since 23 year old Celeste Manno was brutally murdered in her bedroom by a man she barely knew? According to Celeste’s mum, Aggie Di Mauro, not much. In part two of Aggie’s chat with Gary, Aggie lays out in forensic detail why the Victorian Government's response to the Victorian Law Reform Commission's 45 stalking recommendations has been nothing but "lip service." Aggie makes a compelling case for the mandatory electronic monitoring of stalkers who breach intervention orders, dismantling every official excuse offered against it, and exposes the dangerous gap in Victoria's justice system where stalking charges are routinely pleaded down to lesser offences.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
When 23-year-old Celeste Manno was brutally murdered in her own bedroom in November 2020, her mother Aggie knew it could have been prevented. A former coworker had stalked and harassed Celeste for over a year, and the warning signs were everywhere. Police were told. Courts were involved. Intervention orders were issued. Somehow, none of it was enough. In this episode of I Catch Killers, Aggie Di Mauro exposes the catastrophic system failures that preceded Celeste's murder, a justice system she believes let her daughter down, and the fight for a coronial inquest that five and a half years later still hasn't happened.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Was steckt psychologisch hinter Identitätsdiebstahl, Cyberstalking und Catfishing? A Minneapolis man has been arrested for posting threats and encouraging violence against immigration officers. The AP's Jennifer King reports.
Hidden Killers With Tony Brueski | True Crime News & Commentary
You've seen the clips. The bizarre pulpit announcement. The eulogy where he said he tried to raise her from the dead. The protests outside his church. But you haven't heard the full story — until now. This episode goes back to the beginning. To a ten-year-old girl walking into Solid Rock Church and meeting a twenty-five-year-old married pastor who, according to her own police report, would spend years grooming her before making her his second wife. To a first wife who alleges JP confessed to hiring prostitutes and being sexually inappropriate with underage girls in his congregation. To a church that allegedly knew and did nothing. To a system that told Mica Miller — fourteen times — that there wasn't enough to help her.Two days after she served him divorce papers, Mica was dead. Her death was ruled a suicide. JP Miller has not been charged in connection with her death. But the federal government has now indicted him for allegedly cyberstalking her for eighteen months — tracking her every move, posting intimate photos without consent, and harassing her relentlessly until the day she died. And Mica isn't the only death connected to this man. Chris Skinner — a quadriplegic motivational speaker — drowned in a pool two weeks after allegedly confronting JP about an affair with his wife. JP married that woman thirteen months after Mica died. Armed guards protected the ceremony. Two civil lawsuits now allege JP and his father are serial predators who targeted minors for decades. They deny everything. This is the definitive breakdown. Every document. Every allegation. Every failure. The monster hiding behind the pulpit — fully exposed.#MicaMiller #JPMiller #TrueCrimePodcast #HiddenKillers #SolidRockChurch #JusticeForMica #PastorExposed #CoerciveControl #ChrisSkinner #FederalIndictmentJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Two spouses connected to JP Miller are dead. The church is gone. The federal case has begun.John-Paul Miller pleaded not guilty in a Florence, South Carolina courtroom to cyberstalking and lying to FBI investigators. Then he slipped out a back door while over seventy people packed the courthouse and protesters chanted outside. Bond was set at $100,000 — ankle monitor, no contact with victims or witnesses, no firearms, surrender of passport.According to the federal indictment, Miller tracked his estranged wife Mica with GPS devices, contacted her more than 50 times in a single day, posted a nude photo of her online without consent, and damaged her tires. Then he lied to the FBI about it. Mica Miller died on April 27, 2024, just 48 hours after serving him divorce papers. Her death was ruled a suicide.Former FBI Special Agent Robin Dreeke — who ran the Bureau's Counterintelligence Behavioral Analysis Program — analyzes the behavioral patterns in this case. Sworn affidavits describe years of coercive control. Mica told police JP had "groomed" her since she was a child. His first wife says he confessed to being inappropriate with underage church members. Two civil lawsuits accuse Miller of sexually assaulting minors in the late 1990s.And then there's Chris Skinner — a quadriplegic Army veteran who drowned in 2021. His widow Suzie is now JP Miller's third wife. According to sworn affidavits, Chris confronted JP about an alleged affair with Suzie just two weeks before he died. JP officiated Chris's funeral.Miller's defense team says he "looks forward to his day in court." Robin Dreeke breaks down the pulpit announcement, the documented control tactics, the lies that caught Miller, and what the evidence reveals about predatory behavior.#JPMiller #MicaMiller #ChrisSkinner #RobinDreeke #FBI #JusticeForMica #Cyberstalking #CoerciveControl #HiddenKillers #TrueCrimeJoin Our SubStack For AD-FREE ADVANCE EPISODES & EXTRAS!: https://hiddenkillers.substack.com/Want to comment and watch this podcast as a video? Troubling predators are invading all privacy as the evolution of stalking is fueled by the digital age. It's burner phones, sock puppet accounts and delusional ranting. There's a hater in the hobby group. It's into criminal harassment now. Delusional Feds think they're helping. GROK will actively profile you as a user. It's mostly all from one person who never stops. With Millie, the kids come first. Record all phone calls. They get mad when they can't topple you. Recognizing patterns is key. It's about domination thru identity distortion and narrative control. Feigning sympathy is a common tactic. Systematic psychological warfare is targeting those who refuse to submit. Using unstable perps as groomed followers. Just like the intel groups. The law typically looks away. Is it the sexy bag thing? The attacks are structured. Mapping out the attack networks. The internet is now a battlefield. Being mentally ill helps with the effort. Seeing Nyx drop was the hardest thing. Bisquit was happy to see Nyx the dog come home. It's a scary person that takes pleasure in hurting a dog. They have told us once again what type of evil enemy they are.
Tore describes the poisoning of her dog Nyx last night, and the malicious molestation she's been consistently experiencing. Nyx is in the veterinary hospital and fighting for her life. Thugs used a balloon and toxic bait. There is every sign this is Brennan's people. There's a lead bitch at the eye of this storm. A line has been crossed. It's a woman with a clear pattern of conduct. Stalkers are breaking the law when doing much less. False claims and free speech differ. Her profile shows she's a POS. Gloves are now off. The FBI is on it. These teeth can smile, but they really bite too. Now you will see. Pray for Nyx.

The Right Amount of CyberstalkingExperts say this is how to decide on the right amount of pre-first-date research:Focus on sensible “cyberstaling” - Start with verifying what you already know about them. Confirm they work where they say they do by checking out their LinkedIn and get a feel for their personality by scrolling through their Instagram. When it becomes overkill - Things like running a paid background check or combing their social media profiles to do a deep dive into their past and looking at their ex's tagged photos are definitely too much.Check for red flags - Not having an online footprint is a major one. Even if they don't like social media, most people have a LinkedIn profile, if they don't and you feel like something is off, you may want to reconsider meeting up in person.Don't overprepare - This is a date, not a job interview, so don't spoil the genuine way you get to know someone by researching more than you need to.Feeling Financially ComfortableWe are not talking annual salary, this is total.Americans don't need a million dollars to be financially comfortable, just $839-thousand will do it, according to new research from Charles Schwab.Their survey reveals that figure is much lower than the $2.3-million people consider wealthy. When asked to define what “wealthy” means to them, respondents' top three are happiness (45%), “amount of money I have” (44%) and physical health (37%).Corey's BrainWhen I am trying to sleep, it is like three movie screens are playing. One is playing music from the 'Mary Poppins' soundtrack, another is questioning whatever happened to my college boyfriend...this third is me counting back from a 100, version of counting sheep. Does anyone else have a multiplex churning when they just want to rest?Second Date Update Maya met Eric online. They are both into fitness and health, so take a yoga class for their first date. They even enjoyed smoothies afterwards. Why would he ghost?
Kimberly thought she was meeting a charming real estate manager. She had no idea he'd already been stalking her for a month—or that his entire identity was a lie. He was actually a U.S. Department of State special agent with a 30-year history of using his badge and gun to terrorize women across the country. What began as quiet digital surveillance spiraled into a brutal campaign of threats, harassment, rape, and attempted murder. Kimberly fled more than 1,300 miles—twice—but he used his federal ties to track her down, even pulling other law enforcement into his twisted pursuit. Eight officers in five states turned her away. But Kimberly wouldn't stay silent. She was determined to expose the predator behind the badge.**The following episode of Strictly Stalking contains graphics depictions of physical violence and sexual assault. Andrew's life was shattered by someone he barely even knew—a person who turned a simple business partnership into a 15-year nightmare of obsession, harassment, and relentless stalking. When the partnership fell apart, his stalker didn't walk away—instead, they weaponized the legal system. They secured a default judgment, not based on facts, but because Andrew simply didn't have the resources to fight back. That judgment became their tool of control, slowly dismantling Andrew's life piece by piece. Years of torment left him homeless, isolated, and battling multiple suicide attempts. But Andrew refused to let that be the end of his story. He's rebuilt his life—and his brand—on survival, resilience, and the raw truth of what it takes to fight back.**The following episode of Strictly Stalking contains topics including attempted suicide. Lexi survived a brutal attack as a teenager at the hands of people she once trusted. She later bravely shared her story on TikTok, becoming an advocate for victims of violence. However, her journey took a disturbing turn when a stalker forced their way into her life. This person persistently harassed Lexi, her family, and friends—monitoring their social media, creating fake profiles, impersonating people close to Lexi, and even reaching out to her attackers, interfering with her ongoing legal case. Lexi sought help from the police and obtained a protective order. Yet, despite violations of the order, justice remains elusive, leaving Lexi fighting for her safety. HAVE YOU EXPERIENCED STALKING?
