The Life of a Disciple Pt. 5: The With God, Life

The Life of a Disciple, Part 5 – The With God Life Text: Leviticus 26:12, 13 Synopsis: It is not enough to just be delivered from Egypt (That’s the Gospel of Salvation only). God’s grand plan is to dwell with, in, and among His people. Our response is typically to run away and hide when God approaches us. His invitation is clear, “I have made a way for you to draw near to me, draw near then.” Apologies for the audio shifts in this recording. You will need to adjust your volume as the speaker wanders away from the microphone placement. We had issues with out primary recording equipment this Sunday because of the time change and scheduled recordings. This recording is from a phone that was sitting on the pulpit. Also, it only contains the sermon portion this week. - P.D. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poseyvilleworship/message

The Life of a Disciple, Part 3 – Repent! Text: Mark 1:14, 15 Synopsis: A down and dirty discussion about what real repentance is and is not. We tend to rest in mere acknowledgement of sin and then justify our weakness by saying that we are only human. This is a cop out. We are called to holiness. We will also be messing with the order of worship this day as we are going to prepare the ashes for Ash Wednesday by inviting folks to go outside and place their dried piece of palm into the fire pan. This will be under the portico outside fellowship hall. To take the yoke of Christ upon us is an excellent picture of repentance also. We tend to think that it is about giving up and not having a will of our own. This is not the case. We are asked to make His will our own. We are asked to align our will with His. To do this, we must walk away from sin toward the place of yoking. Once in the yoke, their will be a battle of wills for sure. But good luck trying to overpower the older and more mature ox. Jesus will win the battle of the wills. He will drag you away from temptation. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poseyvilleworship/message

The Life of a Disciple, Part 2 – Wars & Rumors of Wars Text: Mark 13:7,8 Synopsis: As the Lord enters the human heart, war ensues. Paul teaches us a great deal about the war that takes place within. We can take this as a sign that Jesus is taking territory in us, that the end is nearer now…but it is not the end. The Life of a Disciple, Part 1 – Lordship Salvation Text: Matthew 24:3-14 Synopsis: A critical side by side analysis of the Gospel of Salvation and the Gospel of the Kingdom. (Hint, the Gospel of the Kingdom actually includes the Gospel of Salvation). The text is an eschatological Scripture that I will apply to the coming of the Lord into our own heart. While it is actually about the last days, the principles apply to every time Jesus advents in humanity. Jesus does not fit into our livers comfortably without required change. He displaces a great deal and upsets the fruit basket. This message is basically a synopsis of the rest of the series that will break down the individual components of the Gospel of the Kingdom. This episode features the children's message from our contemporary service and then it cuts to the traditional service for the rest of the episode. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poseyvilleworship/message

Yielded

Sunday, February 2, 2020 Message: Yielded Text: Matthew 13:1-9 "That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the sea. And great crowds gathered about him, so that he got into a boat and sat down. And the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell along the path, and the birds came and devoured them. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and immediately they sprang up, since they had no depth of soil, but when the sun rose they were scorched. And since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and produced grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. He who has ears, let him hear.” Synopsis: This familiar parable is about the kinds of hearts that hear the gospel and how they receive it. The qualitative difference is in how they receive it. We will discuss the primary difference in their receptions is not in the make up of the soil or in its nutrients, but in how well the soil has been cultivated. It is how yielded the soil is to the plow that determines its fruitfulness. Full Disclosure - much of the heart of the second part of this message came from Bill Johnson's sermon on Matthew 13 from Bethel Church in Redding, California called "Understanding the Key". The Agape Love of God

Sunday, January 26 Message Title: The Agape Love of God Text: 1 John 4:16, 17 (ESV) 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him. 17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world. Synopsis: C.S. Lewis wrote a book called, "The Four Loves". In that work, he revealed some powerful truths that previously had been reserved only for advanced scholars. He tackled the Greek words that have been translated into the word, love, in our modern translations of the Bible. The meanings of these words not only provide a deeper understanding of love for us, but also challenges us as believers to reassess our walks and the love that we carry for God and one another. He stated that he wrote so many theological books because, "until the ordained clergy started communicating the gospel in the vernacular of the people, someone would have to do it for them." In this message, I will lean heavily of Lewis's work as we seek a deeper understanding of God's Agape Love. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poseyvilleworship/message

12/8/2019, Advent 2 - Expectancy: Finding Jesus in the Serving, Matthew 25:37-40 (ESV)

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 10, 2019 66:41

Sermon Outline Advent Wreath Candle of Expectancy – This second Sunday of Advent, we pause to light the candle of Expectancy. It is our desire to cultivate expectant hearts. Hearts that hear the promise of God in Jesus Christ and take Him at His Word. We expect Jesus to come. LIGHT CANDLE Prayer: God, we thank you for your promise of Jesus Christ and your faithfulness to Your word. Your promises are true and trustworthy. Give us the grace to expect Him. Amen. Sermon: What’s in the bag? (bag has a crèche and a cross) to be revealed at the end. Just as Israel was expecting a certain kind of Messiah; a conquering king on a white horse with a sword for the Romans, we often expect Jesus to come as we expect Him to come. We want a Savior on our terms. But God, instead send His Son as a babe, born in a stable. Humble, poor, an outcast. The task for us is to expect Jesus who will often show up in the least likely of places. We tend to seek Him in certain worship styles or only at church. We expect Jesus to show up for other people who we feel have lived the kinds of lives that God respects and are worthy of Jesus. We don’t expect Jesus to show up for us in our ordinary though. Jesus is just as interested in being with you in your daily ordinary. While you are tending to the maintenance of your house or car, while you’re doing your laundry, while you’re raising your children, at the football game, in your business meeting, while you’re driving in your tractor (and I’m not saying only when you are listening to K-Love). He wants to meet you in the mundane. He wants to comfort you at the end of the long hard day. He wants to encourage you while you’re getting dressed for work, frying your eggs, drinking your coffee. The promise is that if you seek Him, you will find Him. But here is the hard thing for us. We don’t expect Him in these places because we have elevated His advent to the high and not the lowly. We have distanced His advent from our normal lives because we think He is only found in the high places. But this is not where He is found. The text we read today reminded us that it is when we have served the least of these, that we have been serving Him. And while I could unpack a hundred different truths from that verse, what I want you to take away today is that Jesus is in those places and people that we don’t naturally think of. So, we are called to expect Jesus in every part of our lives. And in order to do that, we have to open our hearts to Him in those ordinary people and places. For even in our plain paper sacks… Open bag to reveal the expected promise of God. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poseyvilleworship/message

Sermon Notes: Advent 1 Adventum Lux Candle of Promise – This first Sunday of Advent, we pause to light the candle of Promise. Not just the promise the angel gave to Mary and Joseph, but the promise first uttered in the garden. The promise that the woman’s seed would one day crus the head of the serpent. The promise given to Abraham that all nations would be blessed through his seed. The promise given to David that his throne would be established forever. The promise given to Israel that a light would dawn in the darkness. The promise of a Savior. LIGHT CANDLE Prayer: God, we thank you for your promise of Jesus Christ and your faithfulness to Your word. Your promises are true and trustworthy. Give us the grace to put our hope in your Promise. Amen. Message: Our focus this morning is on the fact that Jesus, our Savior was promised from God from the very beginning. As eluded to during our Advent Candle Lighting, the Promise began in the garden and was (as illustrated in our text) repeated throughout the ages. Even now, we pause in this Advent Season to remember the Promised “Coming” of the Messiah. Advent literally means, “Coming”. The Season leading up to the celebration of His incarnation is called “Coming”. It is meant to be a season of expectation and preparation. Expectation of the promise being fulfilled and preparation to receive it. So today we are going to remind ourselves of some of those Old Testament promises of the Coming Messiah (Jesus) and ask how we might prepare our hearts spiritually for Christmas. We are going to spend the rest of the season gearing ourselves up for Christmas Eve on which we will reverently celebrate the Coming of our Savior. It’s an opportunity to disengage from the commercialization of the season and re-immerse ourselves (as those who are His saved ones) in the love and grace of our God. Remembering the Promises: Genesis 3:15 Genesis 12:3 Deuteronomy 18:15 (Micah 5:2-5 Isaiah 7:14 2 Samuel 7:16 Isaiah 9:6-7 Zechariah 9:9-10 Isaiah 53:5 Isaiah 53:9 Psalm 16:10 (Daniel 7:13-14 Malachi 4:2 Zechariah 12:10 Preparing Our Hearts What should our response then be? Our response to these promises would be to prepare our hearts. Primarily, we should develop or cultivate a heart of expectation. All too often, we come to God with wishful thinking alone. This great, “wouldn’t it be nice if” mentality caused most of Israel to miss the boat when Jesus actually came. They longed for Him. They prayed for Him, They needed Him. But they did not EXPECT Him. To develop an expectant heart is a tricky thing. We tend to think it is presumptuous of us to expect anything from God. We are very familiar with the fact that we are undeserving, and we allow that truth to overshadow our hearts. Our thought lives go something like this, “God, I know you can, but I’m not so sure you will because I know I don’t deserve it.” Well yes, that is true. You don’t deserve His love, but He loves you anyway. You don’t deserve a Savior, but He saves you anyway. None of us deserve the coming promise, but God will be faithful to His word anyway. So, we need to come to expect it. This way, we will not miss His appearing when He comes. Don’t demand that Jesus show up for you in a certain way but expect Him to show up in the way you need. Don’t demand that He come on your timetable, Matthew 25:37-40 but expect Him to be found when you seek Him because this was His promise to you. So, next week, we are going to dive deeper into this expectancy and how we can learn to walk in that confident hope of who God is in Jesus. That we can Find Jesus in the least likely of places if we will look for Him. Amen. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/poseyvilleworship/message
