Were more of Jesus' twelve disciples connected than we realize? In Matthew 10:2–4, the Gospel writer does more than list the names of the apostles. He appears to arrange the Twelve in pairs. Peter and Andrew are brothers. James and John are brothers. But what about the other pairings? Were Philip and Bartholomew friends before they followed Jesus? Is Bartholomew the Nathanael described in John's Gospel? Could James son of Alphaeus have been related to Matthew/Levi? Why was Thomas known as "the Twin"? What did Simon's title—"the Cananaean" or "the Zealot"—mean? And why does Matthew preserve Judas Iscariot's betrayal in the very list of apostles? Our guest this episode is an ordained pastor and journalist who's traveled the country speaking to conservative Christians and facilitating discussions about politics and division. But she's come to believe those efforts are ineffective, and has shifted her focus to combatting Christian Nationalism. This is episode 6 in Making Peace Visible's special series, Beyond Polarization. In episodes 1 through 5, we spoke to Americans invested in bridging political divides through journalism, social media, higher education and in civil society. This episode, with a spotlight on religion, examines the limits of trying to find common cause with people you disagree with. Rev. Angela Denker is an ordained Lutheran pastor and a journalist based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She's the author of two books: Red State Christians (2019), and Disciples of White Jesus: The Radicalization of American Boyhood (2025). Having grown up with a mix of Baptist, Evangelical and mainline Protestant influences, Angela eventually embraced a more liberal Christianity and progressive politics.While researching her first book, she saw some openness to dialogue and empathy for immigrants, for instance. But she says, by and large, efforts at bridge building between liberal and conservative Christians have fallen flat.Her second book focuses on the threat of Christian Nationalism, particularly among young white men and boys. In this interview, Denker speaks about why she thinks there are more important threats to the country and the church than polarization. And she makes a case for why we should be paying more attention to the role of religion in American politics today. I couldn't escape from this passage.Mark 8:34-38 is one of those passages that stops you in your tracks because Jesus makes it very difficult to soften, qualify or explain away what He says.Jesus calls the crowd together with His disciples and says:"Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me."Who does that apply to?Whoever. Anyone.That includes me. And if you want to be an actual follower of Jesus, it includes you.In this video, we work through Jesus' challenging words in Mark 8 and what they mean for Christians today: What does it actually mean to deny yourself? What did Jesus mean by taking up your cross? Why is taking up your cross more than enduring life's ordinary difficulties? What does it mean to lose your life for Jesus and the gospel? Can we follow Jesus while making comfort, safety and security our highest priorities? What does Jesus mean when He warns about being ashamed of Him? What does this passage tell us about living on mission?Denying yourself isn't simply denying yourself something. It's accepting that your life is no longer about you.Taking up your cross means that when following and obeying Jesus becomes costly, our answer is still yes.And losing our lives for Jesus and the gospel means our lives become oriented around Him and His mission.Jesus isn't calling every Christian into vocational ministry. He is calling every Christian to follow Him wholeheartedly wherever He has placed them. Being a disciple of Christ is more than just being a follower of God. Being a disciple is being a student of Christ and His Church. As disciples we learn to trust God more than we trust our own knowledge. We learn to be humble in the presence of God's many blessings. If we want to attract others to Christ, to be ‘fishers of men' we must learn to trust God with humility.

Some Christians have believed in Jesus and accepted his grace, but their lives don't look much different than people around them. Did Jesus want us to just be Christians like that? Or did he hope to see us become more? There was a group of people who traveled everywhere with Jesus and whose lives were totally changed. They were called disciples, and that is Jesus's goal for all Christians in this life. What does it look like to be a disciple? In the story of the first disciples Jesus ever invited to follow him, we get some important ideas. Disciples are simply those with Jesus, and no matter who you are or what life circumstance you're in, you can be a disciple of Jesus. And Jesus is who makes us into disciples, those who can Know, Grow, Go, Together with other disciples. In this message, Pastor Joel explains how Jesus does this.

François Gautier est écrivain et journaliste. Ancien correspondant du Figaro en Inde et Asie du Sud-est, auteur de nombreux ouvrages, il est très impliqué dans la vie culturelle, spirituelle et même politique de l'Inde où il vit depuis de longues années.L'ouvrage le plus récent de François Gautier nous permet de découvrir un personnage historique méconnu en Europe : Dara Shukoh (1615-1659), fils aîné de l'empereur moghol qui fit construire le Taj Mahal. J'ai préféré le faire avec ce message aujourd'hui, pour dire mon émotion et ma gratitude à la vague merveilleuse de soutien que j'ai reçue, cette vague qui n'a cessé de me porter jusqu'aujourd'hui, sur ce petit bateau qu'est Zeteo.Dans cette newsletter, je tentais de répondre à la question posée la veille par une auditrice, si Zeteo ne serait pas devenu ésotérique ? Plus que les éléments que j'y ai alors apportés, je crois que les meilleures réponses sont les vôtres. J'ai bien sûr veillé à garder la discrétion de ces messages, en en préservant l'anonymat.À l'image d'Ana, qui écrit que Zeteo est une mosaïque du Christ, et qui reprend la phrase de Marguerite Kardos qui disait récemment que Zeteo est une abbaye multicolore, vos réponses sont émouvantes, édifiantes, profondes, fouillées…Elles me confirment à quel point ce sentiment que je ressens souvent avec Zeteo se vérifie avec vous comme avec tous les magnifiques invité(e)s de ce podcast : celui du dépassement. Dépassement de sentir que ce qui rassemble tant de belles personnes autour de lui me dépasse, pour ma plus grande joie, et si souvent la vôtre ! Comme le disait Christian Bobin, citation que me répète souvent la merveilleuse Frédérique Lemarchand, « ceux qui nous sauvent ne savent pas qu'ils nous sauvent », et j'ajoute, c'est tellement mieux comme ça !Bien sûr, il n'y a pas eu que des réactions de soutien. Mais par rapport aux centaines de messages et de réactions, je peux dire que des messages de défiance, il n'y en a pas eu plus qu'il n'y a de doigts dans une seule main. Et pourtant, ces réactions m'ont peiné, et c'est à ces personnes en premières que j'ai tenu à répondre personnellement.Chez elles comme parmi certains d'entre vous, j'ai retrouvé cet argument que Zeteo peut parfois surprendre en empruntant des chemins spirituels inhabituels.Une de ces personnes est allée plus loin. Elle m'a interpellé au sujet de ce qui serait une mutation de Zeteo, qui serait tombé dans le « divertissement spirituel, où il y aurait à boire et à manger »…Cette semaine, en pensant à tout cela, j'ai eu une image. C'est celle du Christ marchant en Terre Sainte. On sait qu'il n'a pas toujours suivi les chemins les plus balisés, qu'il n'a pas visité que les villages bien vus, qu'il n'est pas resté au Temple avec les prêtres comme ils l'auraient voulu…J'ai cette image qu'il va toujours au-devant de situations nouvelles, de paysages différents, de personnes différentes… J'ai cette image qu'il va toujours au-devant de tous, qu'il est ouvert, qu'il écoute chacun, qu'il parle à chacun, qu'il guérit, qu'il prédit parfois… Et pourtant, il est toujours le Christ !Et en même temps, comme le disent admirablement certains de vos messages, il échappe toujours aux catégories dans lesquelles on veut le ranger bien vite pour se rassurer, pour ne pas confronter des peurs, ou pour n'en garder parfois que ce qui nous convient.J'arrête là l'image. Il est bien évident que je ne me compare pas à Jésus, même s'il est mon modèle… Mais il y a quand même dans l'aventure de Zeteo quelque chose qui ressemble à ce chemin… Comme je l'écrivais la semaine dernière, le choix des invités se fait au rythme des rencontres, des suggestions des amis, des appels du cœur, en ayant ici la conviction de suivre un fil, avec la joie au cœur, et souvent l'enthousiasme…Mais je n'ai pas le sentiment de changer de direction… je ne me pose même pas cette question ! Le Christ est toujours au cœur.J'aimerais citer ici Agnès, une auditrice. Elle s'est posé la question, lorsque j'ai invité une chamane : « jusqu'où explorer ? y a-t-il des limites à ne pas franchir ? » La conclusion de son message, une vraie ouverture, est très belle.Non, Zeteo ne fait pas de tourisme spirituel. Et si effectivement je n'hésite pas à explorer parfois de nouveaux chemins, n'est-ce pas aussi pour tenter de répondre à cette immense soif spirituelle que vous êtes si nombreux à connaître ?Non, il n'y a pas qu'un seul chemin pour aller au divin, détenu par des institutions qui seraient les seules propriétaires de la vérité. Dieu n'est pas consigné à demeure dans les bénitiers, il ne ruisselle pas que par les goupillons. Il y a une multitude de portes qui communiquent entre le monde visible et le monde invisible. Si les religions ont connu d'immenses désaffections, c'est parce qu'elles ne s'adressaient plus à tant de personnes alors que certaines découvrent de plus en plus que le divin est partout.J'admire le pape Léon, sur notre sol français aujourd'hui, qui veut tellement ouvrir les portes de l'Église catholique ! J'étais bouleversé de voir les images de foules en liesse à Paris, notamment de voir tant de jeunes, au Stade de France ou à la Concorde, tout cela pour suivre le Christ ! Ils ont l'enthousiasme au coeur, malgré toutes les tempêtes qui assaillent le monde, nos institutions et l'Église. Quelle émotion de voir toutes ces foules, la joie et la force merveilleusement intacte d'un peuple immense qui, quoiqu'il arrive, suit irrésistiblement le Christ ! Là aussi, le monde de demain est déjà aujourd'hui.Ici, il y a quelques années, ma fierté était de recevoir de plus en plus de femmes. Ensuite, elle a été de donner la parole à des personnes qui vivent l'exclusion en raison de leur orientation sexuelle. Maintenant, elle est de recevoir des personnes merveilleuses comme Claire Barré, chamane, ou Agnès Stevenin, guérisseuse spirituelle.Non, les chamanes, les thérapeutes spirituels ne sont pas tous des charlatans, ils ne sont pas tous les proies même involontaires d'esprits mauvais. Cessons ces chasses aux sorcières d'un autre âge, pratiquées parfois même par certains qui, en cachette, vont consulter les médiums, voyants ou autres, quand il y a des problèmes.Je suis sûr qu'il y a autant de personnes fiables que d'autres pas fiables, là comme ailleurs, comme dans les églises ou même les écoles. À nous d'être adultes, responsables, et pour cela il est toujours mieux d'être éveillé que de vouloir rester dans l'ignorance ou le déni.Je tiens à redire encore ce que j'ai écrit la semaine dernière : Zeteo, un podcast libre et indépendant, accompagné par une multitude d'amis merveilleux aux suggestions souvent si précieuses. Zeteo cherche la joie, l'amour et la guérison, pas la provocation. J'ose croire que la diversité des profils de ses invités le démontre.Je voudrais finir ce message en répondant aussi à ceux qui m'interrogent sur la présence du Christ, déjà dans le logo, et dans l'introduction de chaque épisode qui n'a pas changé depuis sa création il y a sept ans. Parfois, je reçois la demande de retirer le Christ, soit de ceux qui trouvent que Zeteo serait trop chrétien, soit d'autres qui trouvent qu'il ne l'est plus.J'ai infiniment de respect pour les grandes sagesses, les grandes spiritualités, les grands Maîtres comme Amma ou le Dalaï-Lama… En même temps, et dans le sillage de tant d'invités, parmi lesquels Annick de Souzenelle, Philippe Dautais, Marguerite Kardos, Denis Marquet et tant d'autres, j'ai au cœur cette conviction que le Christ est unique, dans son message d'amour et l'offrande de sa vie.Comme le poète Stéphane Bataillon l'a dit à ce micro, je ne comprends peut-être pas tout du mystère du Christ, mais j'ai la conviction que ce mystère est le cœur et la clé de notre incarnation.Le divin est trop aimant de l'humanité et de sa création pour ne se manifester que par le Christ. En même temps, le Christ reste unique, central, il est l'alpha et l'oméga.Oui, il peut y avoir parfois des épisodes avec des croyants d'autres spiritualités, où on ne parle pas du Christ. Pour moi, le Christ est partout ! Le divin est partout. Ce divin que les chamanes des steppes ou des jungles savent voir dans la nature, que les artistes voient dans la beauté, que les grands cœurs voient dans la générosité, que les prêtres voient dans le religieux… il s'agit partout de la même création en lien avec son créateur divin, génial et merveilleux. N'ayons pas peur, ne séparons pas, unissons ! Ayons parfois l'exigence de sortir des idées reçues, des clichés, des sentiers battus.Si effectivement un auditeur m'a quasiment supplié de retirer l'icône du Christ comme effigie du podcast, il n'est pas rare que je reçoive, de personnes très bien intentionnées, la demande de changer mon introduction qui lui fait référence. J'y ai d'ailleurs réfléchi et j'en ai parlé autour de moi en choisissant à dessein des personnes très différentes, toutes attachées à ce podcast.Je peux me tromper, je suis faillible, avec mes qualités et mes limites. Et puis, je ne suis pas le même — et le podcast non plus — qu'il y a sept ans lorsque je le lançais. Et il est possible qu'aujourd'hui, je rédigerais ma présentation un peu autrement. Possible, mais pas sûr.Ce que je sens aujourd'hui, c'est que je garderai comme effigie le Christ Pantocrator, une icône qui figure dans tant de mosaïques de tant d'églises orientales. Je ne toucherai pas non plus à l'introduction. J'aurais trop l'impression de toucher à l'ADN du podcast, aux intuitions qui lui ont donné naissance… J'ai ici une autre image, celle d'une tunique sans couture, qu'on ne peut donc toucher sans la détruire.Ça n'est pas le Christ qui est clivant. C'est souvent ce que l'on en fait. Le Christ, comme le disait Fadila Semaï à ce micro, n'est pas la propriété de certains. Il appartient à toute l'humanité.Zeteo, podcast indépendant, libre et fragile, est un peu en ligne de crête. C'est pourquoi j'ai été très sensible à tous les soutiens que j'ai reçus ces derniers jours.
