And they asked him a question, saying, [19] “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies and leaves a wife, but leaves no child, the man must take the widow and raise up offspring for his brother. [20] There were seven brothers; the first took a wife, and when he died left no offspring. [21] And the second took her, and died, leaving no offspring. And the third likewise. [22] And the seven left no offspring. Last of all the woman also died. [23] In the resurrection, when they rise again, whose wife will she be? For the seven had her as wife.” [24] Jesus said to them, “Is this not the reason you are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? [25] For when they rise from the dead, they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven. [26] And as for the dead being raised, have you not read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the bush, how God spoke to him, saying, ‘I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob’? The book of Job is wisdom literature, like Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs. What can we add to what has already been written on the Book of Job? Is it the oldest book in the canon as its historical milieu would place it, or was it written (down) much later? Is it merely a literary story meant to illuminate the relation between God and man-in-the-created-order, or is it historical? We are not so foolish as to claim that we know any of these answers, or how God has in fact put His word together, but we have learned not to put the plausible stories of man in the place of what He says in His word. We will never go far wrong if we simply trust what God says, being careful readers of scripture. What we do know is that Job is a masterpiece of literature by any metric, and one of (if not) THE greatest works of wisdom literature ever crafted. I cannot help but end with a quote from another such brilliant work: Ecclesiastes 7:23–29 All this I have tested by wisdom. I said, “I will be wise,” but it was far from me. That which has been is far off, and deep, very deep; who can find it out? I turned my heart to know and to search out and to seek wisdom and the scheme of things, and to know the wickedness of folly and the foolishness that is madness.... Behold, this is what I found, says the Preacher, while adding one thing to another to find the scheme of things — which my soul has sought repeatedly, but I have not found.... See, this alone I found, that God made man upright, but they have sought out many schemes. (ESV) Ecclesiastes 12:10–13 The Preacher sought to find words of delight, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The words of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings; they are given by one Shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ [7] But those tenants said to one another, ‘This is the heir. Come, let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’ [8] And they took him and killed him and threw him out of the vineyard. [9] What will the owner of the vineyard do? He will come and destroy the tenants and give the vineyard to others. [10] Have you not read this Scripture: “‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone; [11] this was the Lord’s doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes’?” [12] And they were seeking to arrest him but feared the people, for they perceived that he had told the parable against them. So they left him and went away. [2] When the season came, he sent a servant to the tenants to get from them some of the fruit of the vineyard. [3] And they took him and beat him and sent him away empty-handed. [4] Again he sent to them another servant, and they struck him on the head and treated him shamefully. [5] And he sent another, and him they killed. “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword...” Matthew 10:34Jesus, heralded by angels as bringing peace (Luke 2:14), now claims he brings a sword. This is not a contradiction, but a clarification: Peace with God comes through Christ, but this often brings division with theworld. The light of Christ is intolerable to a sinful world - truth divides.19 And this is the judgment: the light has come into the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their works were evil. 20 For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his works should be exposed. Let your stomach be a balloon inflate, deflate. Scripture for Meditation Luke 7 ESV 48 And he said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 Then those who were at table with him began to say among themselves, “Who is this, who even forgives sins?” 50 And he said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” NIV 48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Meditation on Scripture: Today I have a simple and direct message that forms the core of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. There is no more important sentence we more need to hear than this one. Your sins are forgiven. We spend a great deal of time worried about many different outcomes and different decisions, yet this one is by far the most important. The good news of the Gospel is that this sentence is made possible by the redeemer, Jesus Christ. Regardless of the filth of the world, how stained we have become by its sin, or how prideful we are in thinking we dont need forgiveness despite the ample evidence to the contrary, God can forgive. Jesus performs miracles, we see that in the Gospel accounts. He teaches profound lessons of instruction of moral clarity and righteousness. Yet these people here are baffled that he forgives sins. For those of us who have already accepted that Jesus is the Son of God and as it says in the Gospels that Jesus has take the role of judge. We can forget how unique that is. Here they sat with a man who claimed to forgive sins. Who is Jesus that he can forgive your sins? As you come to truely believe Jesus, not just believe in Him, you come to understand that he certainly is able to forgive sin. We, just like this woman, can be comforted when we ponder that declaration that OUR sins are forgiven. As our faith in God has allowed us to receive a new heart, willing to do what God has asked, we can also Go in Peace. If you lack peace in your heart, set aside all the things that lessen that peace and accept this statement from Jesus. Your faith has saved you; go in peace.” Meditation of Prayer: Pray as directed by the Spirit. Dedicate these moments to the patient waiting, when you feel ready ask God for understanding you desire from Him.
