Welcome to Star Trek Reviews by Haven Studios.Today we will review The Original Series episode, The Man Trap, which first aired in Canada before anywhere else in the world. The Canadian TV station CTV on the 6th of September 1966, two days before it aired on American TV stations, on the 8th of September 1966, a day now celebrated annually with Star Trek Day. For those who are curious, this is the first episode review I am doing since the passing of Nichelle Nichols, and it hasn't aired yet, but by the time this episode is released, my friends over at Strange New Pod have done a very special tribute episode live on their Twitch channel with a special guest David from Promenade Merchants Podcast to remember together Nichelle Nichols, her inspiration and her impact in our lives. I personally hope you are able to listen to it, and as I record this, I look forward to hearing the show myself, as I do each and every week. The website “Memory Alpha” summary is surprisingly short, with only a single sentence “A mysterious creature stalks the Enterprise, murdering crew members.”I thought I had seen this episode before my recent watch for this episode of the podcast, but surprisingly I actually hadn't seen it, although I had heard about the Salt Vampires many many times over the years as a Star Trek fan. My thoughts on this episode. This episode actually was really good up until the last few moments of the episode. If you have listened to past episodes, you would know I do my rating after I talk about it, but I am changing that because honestly for the first 49 minutes of the episode I would rate this a 8 maybe even a 8.5 but the scene at the end with Kirk, Bones and Nancy, where Kirk is offering the salt tablets, actually struck a nerve with me. I have never publicly said this, and this may change people's opinion of me, but I used to be a major drug addict, I won't go into details, but this scene really did change my opinion of the episode quite dramatically. I loved the episode but that one scene had me real salty, and unfortunately that will drop my rating down to a 6 as it made me remember how bad addictions are. But i won't allow a single scene to truly affect my overall rating too harshly, I will give this episode a 7.5. Looking up the IMDB rating, it is 7.2 with 4978 people voting on it, as of 2nd of August 2022. I want to give a huge shoutout to an amazing friend of the podcasts, Joe, you can find him on Twitter using the username DeckLower, he has been such a loyal supporter. You can find us on TikTok and Twitter using the username HavenStudiosPod.On Friday we will continue our TOS watch series with CharlieX. But before we begin, I want to provide you a massive update! So we realized there are 855 episodes of Star Trek, and if we did only 1 episode a week, it would be December 2038 before we got to watch the Season 1 finale of Strange New Worlds. So we have chosen that we will upload new episodes every Monday and Friday, and any two-parter episodes such as The Menagerie which is coming up soon, will be done as a single episode. For those who are watching this on TikTok, I may split it up on TikTok as two separate videos but you will be able to see the full episode over on YouTube, as well as download it on any major platform. The website “Memory Alpha” summary is “An encounter at the limits of our galaxy begins to change Lieutenant Commander Gary Mitchell and threatens the future of the Enterprise and the Human race itself.”Unlike when we watched The Cage, I was unable to do a rewatch with Strange New Pod, due to my work schedule and we had done a rewatch of Star Trek 6: The Undiscovered Country the night before recording this, as a tribute to the passing of David Warner, who played Gorkon in that film. My thoughts on this episode. This episode was that it was not nearly as good of a pilot especially compared to The Cage, I actually think that I would much rather watch The Cage over this episode, I don't know if it was truly the 60s feel to the show, but also I have not really enjoyed The Original Series as much as modern shows. It was still a good episode of Star Trek but not as strong of an episode. As a rating, I would rate this episode a 6, it had good parts to the show but also had much to be improved on. The official IMDB rating for Where No Man has Gone before, as of July 27st 2022, is 7.7 with 5544 viewers rating it. We still have not received any feedback but we would love it if you would a mailbag reply. Visit bit.ly/HavenMailbag, capital H and mailbag is all in caps. Welcome to the Star Trek review by Haven Studios.Today we will review the pilot episode of Star Trek, also known as The Cage, which didn't air on Canadian or American airwaves until 1988 but was filmed back in 1964.The website “Memory Alpha” summary is “While investigating a distress call from Talos IV, Captain Christopher Pike of the starship Enterprise is captured and tested by beings who can project powerfully realistic illusions.”We recently watched this episode with a group of friends over on the Strange New Pod discord as part of a frequent watch-along where we pick a random episode at length to chat about while we watch the episode. We highly recommend if you don't listen to Strange New Pod, go check them out over on YouTube for past episodes or come join them live on Twitch every Thursday. My thoughts on this episode. This episode was a good pilot, it probably wasn't my favorite pilot of Star Trek, but it was still good, I do see the potential in the show, you can tell there was a lot that was left to be desired but also, I don't think we would have 56 years of Star Trek if Jeffery Hunter was kept as the lead actor in the show. When I watched this in the watch along over on the Strange New Pod discord, NY Raleigh had the same idea about the show failing if Hunter had stayed on the show. As a rating, I would rate this episode a 7, it had good parts to the show but also had much to be improved on. The official IMDB rating for The Cage, as of July 21st 2022, is 7.6 with 6169 viewers rating it. I rated this episode prior to looking up the rating so I feel like I was in good company for how I would rate the show.As this episode is our first official episode we don't have any feedback yet for the show, but I would love to hear your feedback. If we only have one or two we will read them on the show, but if we end up getting a lot, we will do dedicated episodes just for feedback. Please check our LinkTree for how to give feedback. As it cost money to host our podcast, we would love it if you would check out our sponsor, MixT Energy. Welcome to our Haven Studio's podcast all about Star Trek. This is a tribute episode, we want to share some breaking news we learned about only about an hour ago, Lt. Uhura, the legendary Nichelle Nichols, has passed away. I am going to read the official post shared by her son, and then read our statement.Sunday 31st of July 2022, Friends, Fans, Colleagues, WorldI regret to inform you that a great light in the formation no longer shines for us as it has for so many years. Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nicholes, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light, however, like ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from and draw inspiration. Her's was a life well lived and such a model for us all. I, and the rest of our family would appreciate your patience and forbearance as we grieve her loss until we can recover sufficiently to speak further. Her services will be for family members and the closest of her friends, and we request that her and our privacy be respected. Live Long and Prosper - Kyle Johnson. This was the official statement posted on her Facebook and Instagram pages at 2:20pm Eastern today, and as we record this, it is 3:30pm. I personally am still in shock at this news. I knew this day would come sooner than later, but it doesn't make it hurt any less.We shared our thoughts very quickly on TwitterMay she rest in peace. We learned about her passing through an honoured friend, @Lyrical_Girafe who shared it with us. Our planet may have lost a great communications officer, but her star will always shine.Tomorrow, 1 August 2022, is our first episode, The Cage, being released at 3 am Eastern, and on Friday, 5th of August 2022, is Where No Man has gone before. We will be reviewing Uhura's debut episode The Man Trap, on the 8th of August 2022. We will see you soonLive Long and Prosper,HavenSupport the show
Transcription:Welcome to our Haven Studio's podcast all about Star Trek.Today is just our trailer episode, our first official episode will be coming out in August on a weekly basis.I am going to introduce myself first, my name is Haven - I am a non-binary individual from the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario Canada, who uses any pronouns but prefers they/them.This podcast will be a short 2 to 3-minute podcast each week, talking about each episode and then I will give it a rating out of 10, and then once a season ends I will do a recap of the entire season and how I rated each episode and rank each episode from Best to Worse, these episodes may be a bit longer than the 2 to 3 minutes. The reason I am doing such a short episode is I will be uploading these to TikTok, as well as being able to be found on YouTube and everywhere that Anchor allows me to distribute the episodes. You will find links to all of these on our linktree profile which will be Linktr.ee/havenstudiopod or in our bio if you are watching this on TikTok.We will be starting with The Orignal Series and going forward each week in release order, the only change we will be doing is starting off with The Cage.As of this recording, there are 855 episodes or movies and we will be covering all of them! We have quite the project ahead of us. If you wish to send us any feedback, or letters covering this send it our way using our LinkTree link.
