Anthony and Laurie welcome actor and artist Bruce Horak to the podcast to talk about getting cast as Chief Engineer Hemmer on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, doing knife-catching scenes and death scenes, singing as a Klingon, filming during Covid, and bonding with Uhura. He also tells us about his way of seeing the world and how he’s expressing that in his painting and the documentary he’s crowdfunding, Boldly Going, in which he meets others who have overcome barriers to find creative freedom and purpose and paints their portrait as he talks to them, creating a moment of connection captured on canvas.

Those Old Scientists (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, S2 E7) was recommended by Bryan Love(Blackrain), who said: Time travel, cross over, animate, live action, fan boying or girling over your historical idols. What more can you ask for in a Star Trek episode? When on routine away mission to scan an ancient time portal, Ensign Boimier is sucked in into the portal and sent to the past just at the right time when Enterprise was making it's first discovery of that strange portal. Boimier tries his best not to contaminate the time line, but it's Boimier we're talking about. He's going to mess things up or his bestie Mariner will. Just when the crew of Enterprise has the one and only chance to get Boimier home through the ancient time portal, Mariner jumps through from her side thinking she's saving Boimier, but only stranding both of them in the past. Both Boimier and Mariner fan boy out on different Enterprise crew members. This is a great episode over all. Mixing the humor of Lower Decks with the hard hitting stories of Strange New Worlds. It was also perfect that both the voice actors for Boimier and Mariner both look closely like their cartoon characters. This episode always brings up that question of how would you react if you got to meet with you hero? Someone you never thought you would, ether living or dead. Those Old Scientists first aired on July 22, 2023, written by Kathryn Lyn & Bill Wolkoff, and directed by Jonathan FrakesIn the 24th century, ensign Brad Boimler of the USS Cerritos is assigned to investigate an ancient portal. The portal, which is powered by the rare substance horonium, sends him back in time 120 years where he is taken aboard the Enterprise. Boimler struggles to contain his excitement at meeting his heroes and also to prevent polluting the timeline with his knowledge of the future. The portal is stolen by an Orion ship and Pike trades grain supplies to retrieve it. They attempt to return Boimler to the future with the last remaining horonium, but ensign Beckett Mariner comes through the portal instead in a rescue attempt. Spock and Boimler unsuccessfully try to synthesize horonium so they can use the portal again while Mariner and Uhura work to translate engravings on the portal. Boimler realizes that horonium from the hull of the previous starship Enterprise was incorporated into Pike's Enterprise. They use this to send Boimler and Mariner back to their own time, while the Orions agree to accept credit for discovering the portal in exchange for allowing the Enterprise to continue peacefully. The Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

Folge unseres Podcasts feiern!
Temba, his arms wide!We have a new episode of Casual Trek for you and it's about language, no, not naughty language, although we're both British so we're VERY good at that. We're talking about times where language and communication have been important Trekian themes! First, everyone on Deep Space Nine is talking gibberish instead of Technobabble in ‘Babel' while in Strange New Worlds, Uhura's first away mission goes horribly awry when she has to communicate with the ‘Children of the Comet' and finally, we deal with one of The Next Generation's best episodes as we try and find out just who is Darmok and why was he at Tanagra in ‘Darmok.' Temba, at rest! Episodes Discussed: Babel (09:42), Children of the Comet (31:17) and Darmok (52:57)Talking Points Include: Catch-22, Sakamoto Days and the slow weebification of Charlie, Love Hurts, Sean Austin, is this Chief O'Brien's first worst day, Babel originally being a TNG script and how it would not have been as fun, the Odo/Quark dynamic, Kira having no time for BS, how irritating it must be to play a Vulcan sometimes, Sam Kirk is not this show's Kenny, does Strange New Worlds disregard Roddenberry's attitude to God? Uhura and Spock being friends, Miles misses Hemmer, when Spock thinks you ****ed up… you ****ed up! Troi's rather slim resume, Miles suffers the Darmok problem with UK-Specific references in the US, ‘Darmok' might be Star Trek's clearest descent into allegory, How ‘Darmok' inspired the scariest episode of Doctor Who, Picard's new jacket, Pedant's Corner: The Chuckle Brothers were a slapstick comedy duo popular on British children's telly. To me. To you. Rolf Harris was also a popular children's entertainer on British TV… until he was convicted on many charges of SA towards minors.Miles guesting on Famicom Dojo as Sean plays ‘Out of This World.' https://www.youtube.com/live/Ucv-hoyVmPU?si=hx_tb9k9qVCqZBMr

Rerun: Capt. James T. Kirk (William Shatner) and Lt. Nyota Uhura (Nichelle Nichols) embraced and kissed on "Plato's Stepchildren"; an episode of ‘Star Trek' broadcast on 22nd November, 1968 - just a year after the Supreme Court declared interracial marriage to be legal. However, despite popular belief that this was TV's first interracial kiss, it wasn't. It wasn't even the first interracial kiss on TV featuring William Shatner… In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly examine just how slowly attitudes to ‘mixed marriage' were shifting in the United States; compare this iconic Trekkie moment to homoerotic frat-boy YouTube videos; and reveal how the actors concerned deliberately sabotaged ‘the wide' so their kiss would be screened coast-to-coast… Further Reading: • Kirk and Uhura kiss on ‘Star Trek' (Paramount Television, 1968): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lThvEsP5-9Y • ‘'Star Trek's' interracial kiss 50 years ago boldly went where none had gone before' (NBC News, 2018): https://www.nbcnews.com/news/nbcblk/star-trek-s-interracial-kiss-50-years-ago-went-boldly-n941181 • ‘Nichelle Nichols on filming the first interracial kiss on American television' (Archive of American Television, 2010): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hKKkGhEDoU ‘Why am I hearing a rerun?' Wiz RECOMMENDS Star Trek: First Contact One of the things I liked about the movies based on the original Star Trek series is that the films largely didn't require you to be that familiar with the crew originally. I came into watching the films with zero experience with the original cast and came out enjoying 2/3's of the films that were made from that cast. Going into Star Trek: First Contact, it's quite clear that the filmmakers were not concerning themselves with introducing these characters to viewers with no experience to The Next Generation. In fact, in this movie it feels like a requirement: several things seem to have happened as the movie begins that didn't happen in Generations: Picard was captured by the Borg, Worf has his own ship and LeForge doesn't have his visor...for reasons? I'm more than certain someone can tell me who's familiar with the series what has happened but the movie leaves someone like me in a confused state. Who is the Borg? What's going on with Picard? Where the hell is LeForge's Visor and why does he have those freaky eyes?! And because the film feels like it requires you to know what has happened before all of this, the film feels much less enjoyable when it comes to knowing the characters. This is now two movies where Picard, a character that seems to be beloved by many, just feels like a bossy, overly emotional dick. His No. 1, Riker (Jonathan Frakes) is either comic relief or straight man, depending on what the scene needs. This is in stark contrast to the original series where in Wrath of Khan (where you should start watching the Star Trek films) the personalities are clear: Kirk has bravado, is a man's man and loyal, Bones is sarcastic but cares in his own way, Spock is cold, thoughtful but slowly warms to the crew. Hell, even characters like Scotty and Uhura have personalities that are well defined by then. It just doesn't feel like I know the personalities of these characters at all, except for Data because he's an android. If I'm honest, I'm liking Star Trek not for its action or sci-fi elements, but because of the characters. And so far, The Next Generation films are a letdown on this side. But what isn't a letdown is the action and drama. Gone are the corny and bad special effects; in are some good action sequences and some really well done effects when it comes to ship battles and shooting. The film also keeps a very consistent cadence of action and drama. All of the scenes either have a fun action sequence or tell the story in a very brisk clip making it an entertaining film as the movie goes on. What helps the drama is the interesting villain that is on display: The Borg. They are played off as scary, deadly and have a very intriguing concept that helps up the drama. But it would have been a lot better if the film gave more depth to them...which may have been something that was delved into in the series (or just to make them more scary, not give them any kind of background). Despite my main reason for liking Star Trek being the main weakness for First Contact, it's an entertaining science fiction popcorn flick. It's got some exciting sequences and a pretty good villain...but my guess is that if they keep making the films in hope that you already know the characters going in, the next two might have a big issue for me.
These certainly were two episodes! Aspen and Kenny DISAGREE. What do they disagree on?? Guess you'll have to listen and find out! Aspen hates Whom Gods Destroy. Kenny loves Defenders of Peace (and so does Aspen). Is the Galactic Republic a strictly American analog? We also discuss the nature of conflict. Also, Uhura, Sulu, and Chekov are constantly undercut. Show Notes: Despite what Americans may think, moral panics about TV exist everywhere and today, we begin the exploration of a doozy. The start of a two-part look into four episodes of Star Trek that came a cropper at the hands of Auntie Beeb (a not-so affectionate term for the BBC) that of course allows Miles to indulge in one of his favourite talking points about British movie culture - Video Nasties! Because of this, we're only looking at two episodes per part. In ‘Miri,' we see some very familiar style backlots and some very 1960s ways of talking to young women which definately makes our casual explorers think Auntie may have a point! Then, we jump straight to the third season of The Original Trek as our heroes endure ten minutes of plot and forty minutes of bloody nonsence in ‘Plato's Stepchildren,' possibly one of the most famous episodes of Star Trek (unless you're from the Deep South) but is consent more important than controversy? Whatever we decide, the Big List will change forever! Episodes discussed: ‘Miri' (10:39) and ‘Plato's Stepchildren' (38:17) Talking Points: Video Nasties, why were these episodes banned from broadcast until the 90s, Miles' first choice for his Non-Trek thing indicates some wider issues, Alien Romulus, Miles misses Stupid Drunk British Lads smashing stuff with pipes, Astro's Playroom, Miles and Charlie have different views towards achieving Platinum on games, Miri, Miles only wants to talk about lists, not get put on one himself, the always creepy 'she looks 14 but she's actually 300 trope,' Kirk's charm here does not read well in 2024, exact replicas of Earth are a little silly, how many SF societies wipe themselves out looking for immortality (and Miles pulls out a bit of 'meanwhile in the UK, Doctor Who was doing this' coincidence), we briefly touch on the rather triggering experiences of Grace Whitney (Yeoman Rand) shortly after this episode and her leaving the series, the oddly faced Steven Jay Pollard, Droogs in waiting, Shatner clearly trying not to punch a child, did the BBC have a point with Miri? Violence from children, inferred child-death, Hey Jude, the majesty of the theme for ‘The Good, The Bad and the Ugly,' whenever people bring up eugenics, just turn around and run, we've started to incorporate our experiences with Space 1999 into watching Star Trek, nonsense starts and just generally never stops, Charlie gets slap-happy, Mary Whitehouse would not approve which is fine because we don't approve of Mary Whitehouse. The nonsense gets creepy when Spock starts singing and it gets REALLY creepy when Kirk and Uhura is made to smooch, Charlie really wants to make a Dragonball Z joke here, when it's done, Miles is pulling off the band-aid, some real shame on our heroes her, is this our first mention of slash-fics? This episode doesn't go full-Hellraiser, No Gods No Philosopher Kings, sorry Parmon, one day Miles will go on a long tirade on how people misuse the term ‘Lynchian,'how much truth is there in the legend, would you show this to your partner and we can't escape Shatner's disturbingly pointy nipple, Miles has watched some wank in his life and that definately reflects his opinion of the episode, Miles poses Charlie a very important question.
Life can sometimes get crazy busy, and that is where we are right now. Apologies for the delay in getting this episode out, but it is worth the wait. In this episode, we talk about Dennis Connors who just won a Silver Medal in the Paris Paralympics in cycling. Not content with the leading role in every Star Trek thing ever, William Shatner takes a seat in both the captain's and the director's chair for Star Trek V: The Final Frontier. So how will Shatner's Trek directorial debut compare to what's come before? If you guessed 'More unicorns, Uhura takes her clothes off, and Spock shoots God in the face?' - my word you're good, which is more than we can say for the actual movie. OR IS IT? Perhaps watching The Final Frontier as the next step on our Trek trek lends it enough context as to soften our hearts. Is Rob a Star Trek fan yet? [Review starts at 15:48] Anthony and Laurie start with the surprising news that the Skydance/Paramount talks are back on and heating up. They also discuss the latest on Trek movies on the big screen (including Chris Pine’s comments about playing an older Kirk) as well as the small one, Celia Rose Gooding’s thoughts on Uhura in season 3 of Strange New Worlds, Mike McMahan’s tidbits about season 5 of Lower Decks, and Rosario Dawson’s revelation that she had to turn down a Star Trek role to be in Ahsoka. Then it’s time to dig into the very long-awaited season 2 of Star Trek: Prodigy. Tony and Laurie review the first five episodes, looking at them individually and as an arc and celebrating that the show is finally back. They wrap up with Neil DeGrasse Tyson on if scientists have discovered Dyson Spheres (like from TNG “Relics”), and Laurie’s guest appearance on the Deep Space Love podcast to talk “Rejoined.”

Rosa shares how she always knew she wanted to be involved with computers and how being a big Star Trek nerd and fan particularly of Spock and Uhura helped shape her direction. Following 9/11, Rosa wanted to work for the government and pursue the bad guys and she did just that completing her bachelor's degree and starting in the Defense Intelligence Agency as a cyber threat analyst focusing on extremist groups. She joined the CIA and worked on things you see in the movies, things that are science fictionesque. Rosa recommends talking with people to get your feet wet to find your passion. Plato's Stepchildren (Star Trek: The Original Series, S3 E10) was recommended by Kaleb, he/him (pronounced 'Kay-lub'), who said: When thinking of which episode to recommend, this one didn't even cross my mind; I was sure it must be universally beloved! However, I found that it seems to be rather divisive, so I'm taking that as an excuse to recommend one of my all-time favorite episodes. It has some really great Spock character moments- especially in the scene after he and Kirk are humiliated by Parmen and Philana- which I'm always excited about. Really the entire scene lives rent free in my mind, especially Alexander's speech and his anger towards the other Platonians. As an autistic person, I really relate to how he- a disabled man living among a population created through eugenics- is finally able to verbalize that his treatment wasn't deserved because of his difference, and that he doesn't want to be just like them.I also really love Uhura and Kirk's exchange right before their kiss, showing the trust shared between the members of the bridge crew this far into the series. The whole scene surrounding it has THE most sinister undertones, it's a little uncomfortable to watch, but it's supposed to keep you on tenterhooks waiting to see how far it'll go before they find a way out.Yes, it's another (allegedly) advanced alien species that's modeled itself on Ancient Greece- however it's camp as hell, so I love it, especially Spock, Chapel, and Parmen's outfits. I have a blast every time I rewatch it, even though Parmen needs to learn that just because you're in space doesn't mean you don't have to ask for consent before making people do weird fucked up acts for your amusement.TLDR: Have you ever heard of Plato, Aristotle, Socrates? Morons.Plato's Stepchildren first aired on November 22, 1968, written by Joyce Muskat, and directed by John ErmanThe Joy of Trek is hosted by Khaki & Kay, with editing & production by Chief Engineer Greg and music by Fox Amoore (Bandcamp | Bluesky)Send us your recommendations, or support us on Patreon.Find us at joyoftrek.com · Twitter · Facebook

UHURA HAS VISIONS and none of them are good. Will she be able to figure out the source before she loses her mind? Helping her through all this is Lt. James T. Kirk who is aboard the Enterprise for reasons, one of which is to eventually meet Spock. Is it an historic moment? Shereese Alexander was on our episode about Voyager's "Drone" and returns to comment on her very first episode of Strange New Worlds while also celebrating the end of The TNG Podcast, which looked at every episode of TNG, as well as promote her Tik Tok channel @thescifisavage -- check it out! In a thrilling update for "Star Trek" fans, Paramount+ has announced the renewal of "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" for a fourth season, even as "Star Trek: Lower Decks" is set to conclude its journey with its upcoming fifth season. "Strange New Worlds," which premiered on Paramount+ in 2022, has quickly become a fan favorite. The series, set during the early days of Capt. Christopher Pike's command of the USS Enterprise, explores the adventures of younger versions of iconic characters like Spock, Uhura, and Kirk. The show's successful second season featured standout episodes such as a musical and a crossover with "Lower Decks," securing its place in Nielsen's top 10 list of most-watched streaming original series. Executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman expressed their excitement about the renewal: "On behalf of the cast and crew, we are thrilled and grateful to continue our voyages together. We can't wait for you to join us on another season of exploration and adventure." On the animated front, "Star Trek: Lower Decks" will be wrapping up with its fifth season this fall. Since its debut in 2020, the series has carved a unique niche within the franchise by focusing on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos, blending humor with heartfelt storytelling. Despite the conclusion of "Lower Decks," creators have hinted at potential future adventures for the beloved crew. Jeff Grossman of Paramount+ praised both shows for their contributions to the "Star Trek" legacy: "'Strange New Worlds' has found the perfect blend of action, adventure, and humor, while 'Lower Decks' has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart." David Stapf, president of CBS Studios, echoed these sentiments: "'Lower Decks' and 'Strange New Worlds' are integral to the 'Star Trek' franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds. We are extraordinarily proud of both series." As "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" gears up for its fourth season and "Star Trek: Lower Decks" prepares for its final bow, the journey through the stars seems far from over for "Star Trek" enthusiasts.
WE'RE BACK! It's been too long, but David and Aaron return with their most personal episode yet - for David, anyway. He recommends the 1995 made-for-TV movie ADVENTURES OF CAPTAIN ZOOM, starring Daniel Riordan, Ron Perlman and Nichelle "Uhura" Nichols. Oh, and it was written by Brian Levant (FLINTSTONES), Rick Copp (BRADY BUNCH MOVIE) and... DAVID GOODMAN?! That's right! Aaron must watch the movie and tell David what he thinks of it... right to David's face! It's the explosive episode that could blow this podcast apart! For the Life Experience, Aaron recommends that David learn to do a magic trick. Admittedly it's not quite as impressive to just hear the audio of David's trick... but trust us, it's a mind-blowing feat of prestidigitation!Incredible slights of hand and terrible special effects await you in this sci-fi spectacular!
Happy #FirstContactDay! Tonight we discuss the 10th episode where we find the crew halted in space by a giant Rubik's Cube. This was the first regular episode produced after the two pilots and the first to include DeForest Kelley as Dr. Leonard McCoy, Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura (in a yellow uniform rather than red) and Grace Lee Whitney as Yeoman Rand.[2] Because episodes were not aired in production order (a trait throughout the entire run of the original series), audiences had already been introduced to these three nine weeks earlier, in the series' debut episode, "The Man Trap". Spring has sprung, so it's no better time for a seasonal special, baby!! Join Joe, Ali, Chris, and Branson as they draft their dream Trek bridge crew, chat about Vulcans, oh and make one incredible surprise announcement. Don't miss it!TREK DRAFT RULESThis will be a snake draft. You will draft a crew of 7 officers to helm your StarshipYour crew must fill the following roles: Captain, Executive Officer/Security Officer, Science Officer, Ship's Doctor, Chief Engineer, a ‘soft skills' officer (Guinan, Neelix, Uhura), and a Wildcard (Wesley, Nog, someone else from another role). These roles may be drafted in any order, but failure to draft each of these positions will result in an invalid draft slate and immediate ejection from the draft.Babylon Who? Battlestar Galacti-what? Only characters from Star Trek series and films are eligible for this draft. Firefly is in the jar! Han Solo? A no-no!The JJ Decree: Eligible series and movies for this draft must take place in what is commonly understood as the main Star Trek universe. The JJ Abrams versions of characters are not eligible. For each slot, the character must reasonably be able to serve in that role. For example: Beverly Crusher could conceivably serve as your Captain, but Jean-Luc Picard could not be your Doctor.Quark's on the bridge? Trek characters who are not Federation officers but could serve in these roles are eligible. These characters are also eligible to be wildcards.Distribution: Your crew cannot come exclusively from one series.Draft Exclusivity: Once you draft a character, no other player may draft that character to their crew. This includes time travel/Mirror Universe/alternate future counterparts.Sulu's Rule: If a character has multiple jobs over the course of their Starfleet career, that does not mean they are eligible multiple times. If Player A drafts Sulu as their helmsman, Player B cannot draft movie Sulu as their Captain, etc.Combs's Bylaw: Different characters played by the same actor are eligible to be drafted alongside each other or by different players. Player A could draft Weyoun and Brunt (both played by Jeffrey Combs) if they so choose.Uhura's Corollary: When a single character is played by different actors, those different performances are considered one (1) character. If TOS Uhura is drafted, Strange New Worlds Uhura is ineligible. The Riker Exception: Because William Riker gets split into two people in that one episode and his double, Thomas Riker goes on to live a separate, individual life from the point of that split, for the purposes of this Draft both Rikers are eligible. You are allowed to name your ship. You heard right! Jill and Tom opened a topic-packed show by acknowledging carmaker Fisker's grim fiscal situation. The once-promising EV start-up has broken off collaboration talks with Nissan, and seems doomed to enter bankruptcy. The hosts then chatted briefly about Cupra, a spin-off of Volkswagen's Spanish brand Seat. Talk is that the Cupra brand will come to the U.S. before the end of the decade with a duo of small crossovers and a small sports car. The vehicles will likely be produced by VW in the U.S. Still in the first segment, Jill shared quick reviews of the redesigned Hyundai Santa Fe, and the updated Ford Ranger. In the second segment Jill and Tom are joined by pet expert and radio host Steve Dale (SteveDale.TV) to talk about traveling with cats and dogs. Steve shared plenty of information about taking your pet on a plane, or bringing it along for extended car rides. Steve also shared a few tips on how to get the most from airport lounge buffets. In the last segment Jill is subjected to Tom's “Is it Real” fake-model quiz, after which Tom talked about his new review of the 2024 Subaru Outback Touring XT. Oh, and the quiz bonus question includes Uhura.
