While exploring the outer reaches of the galaxy, the Enterprise encounters a derelict alien starship that's more than 300 million years old. It's completely lifeless, save for one alien entity that hijacks the Enterprise in an effort to take it back to a more populated sector of the galaxy. "Beyond the Farthest Star" earned its place in "Star Trek" history by being the first episode of "The Animated Series," which aired on September 8, 1973 (seven years to the day after the original "Star Trek" series made its network TV debut). This new show may look different and be only half as long, but it was still very much a true "Star Trek" series that featured great writing, a worthy new theme song and, of course, the voices of William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley and almost everyone else from "The Original Series." Welcome back aboard the continuing voyages of "Enterprise Incidents," which officially gets under way with our preview of "Star Trek: The Animated Series." We're excited to be joined for this very special podcast episode by Aaron Harvey and Rich Schepis, authors of the detailed and lavishly-illustrated book "Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series." Among the many questions that we'll have answered: What were the events that led to the creation of "The Animated Series?" How did the syndication of "The Original Series" and the very first "Star Trek" conventions play a part in that? How did most of the original cast members sign on to reprise their iconic roles? Which producers and writers from "The Original Series" also came back for "The Animated Series?" How did "The Animated Series" grease the rails for "The Motion Picture" and, basically, every other "Star Trek" series that followed? And perhaps the biggest and most loaded question of all: Is "The Animated Series" officially considered part of "Star Trek" canon (and should it be)? Since the early 1970s were such a crucial time period that set the stage for the continued existence and evolution of "Star Trek," this is one episode of "Enterprise Incidents" you won't want to miss! Not quite sure how we're here already - but welcome to the end of 2022! We take a break from our regularly scheduled programming to do a quick recap of the year, which has us literally going through all the Star Trek we've watched this year. It's hard to believe that 2022 brought us 51 episodes of new Trek, but it happened! Of course, we also need to talk about what we're looking forward to in 2023. While Johnson persistently questions whether or not he'll even be able to stay alive, Mike is a bit more hopeful and anticipates some great Trek in the not-so-distant future. Special thanks to our fellow Trek Geeks Podcast Network podcasters Kasey and Ron for sharing a highlight or two of theirs for inclusion in this episode. We also want to thank all our listeners for sticking with us over the past year. From Mike's constant wi-fi issues to the Discovery soapbox that is always calling Johnson's name, we're just glad that you're all still around. See you next year!

Flight Through Entirety: A Doctor Who Podcast

From Amy's imaginary friend to the Hero of Trenzalore, Matt Smith spent four years and more than a few centuries as the Doctor. So now that he's gone, how do we think he did? Notes and links Thank you very much to the listeners who contributed their questions to this episode: DJ Alpha-T, Frazer Gregory and Nathan Bottomley. Nathan claims to enjoy the idea that the Doctor is a somewhat problematic figure rather than just a traveller or a simple hero. Not everyone agrees, however. In this article in The Atlantic, Ted B Kissell complains that Matt Smith's Doctor, is in many ways, a fairly terrible person. As we said last week, Steven Moffat's actual quote was that Matt Smith is like “Patrick Moore in the body of an underwear model”. None of us seem to know anything about the ratings here, but The Day of the Doctor was apparently the highest rated drama for the year on the BBC, with 12.8 million viewers and an additional 3.2 million views on iPlayer. On BBC America, it had an audience of 2.8 million viewers, which was the highest rating ever received on the channel. (This, and more information about the special can be found on its TARDIS Fandom page.) Follow us Nathan is on Twitter as @nathanbottomley, Todd is @ToddBeilby, and Richard is @RichardLStone. Rima, must rescue a family and two escaped convicts trapped in a forest "Fire". John and Dan Greenfield of 13th Dimension discuss the odd call of including Rima, the better than John thought "Plant Creatures" and the narc that always sells out the kids in the Wonder Twins. Dan references The Ultimate Super Friends Companion by Will Rodgers.  Check it out for yourself by purchasing a copy via Amazon.   Dan Greenfield is the editor and co-creator of 13thDimension.com, a website devoted primarily to comics and pop culture, past and present. But if he had to he'd be able to subsist on Batman alone. Channel 11 in New York was his favorite syndicated channel as a kid -- you can guess why -- followed closely by Channel 5. Channel 9 didn't really enter into it unless he was home sick and there wasn't much else on.
