For our second Not-So-Terrible-2, we have the best turnaround for a sequel that Hollywood has ever seen: Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. After the boring failure that was Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Paramount pulled in someone who had never seen Star Trek to direct the film, Nicholas Meyer. Starring William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, Bibi Besch, Merritt Butrick, Kirstie Alley, and an incredible performance from Ricardo Montalbán.

Back in 1966, a little science fiction show boldly went where no television series had gone before. To celebrate the 60th anniversary of Star Trek: The Original Series, we assembled a pod dedicated to the show that changed TV with its swashbuckling adventure, big ideas, and thoughtful morality tales. We discuss the initial vision for the series and the unforgettable cast who brought it to life — including William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols, and the rest of that legendary bridge crew. Along the way, we revisit our favorite episodes like “Amok Time” and “The Enemy Within,” and explore why these stories still hold up.  We also shout-out parodies and homages to Trek like Galaxy Quest, Free Enterprise, and the chilling Black Mirror episode “USS Callister.” So grab your communicator, set phasers to fun, and join us as we celebrate sixty years of Star Trek: The Original Series! Special guest host: Warren Drummond (Los Angeles-based storyboard artist and author of "A Hard Day's Work.") Special featured guests: RobinTreks, Harley M, and Thomas N. Perkins.

Creator, Gene Roddenberry's vision of a future that was beyond the contemporary struggles of civil rights and racism and global Cold War tensions but very much aligned with the style of the 1960s. As a diverse crew faced alien planets and tackled ethical questions audience numbers dwindled and cancellation loomed. The show was finally axed in 1969 but a growing fanbase aided by syndication meant what could have been a small part of TV history actually became a huge phenomena.

We're getting into We ❤️ Movies Month here on The Nexus as well, that's right, it's time for us to (finally) take a look at the masterful Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country! When you really get down to it, putting the legendary villain of Khan aside, there's a real argument to be made that THISis the best of all Star Trek films. How incredible is this cold open with Captain Sulu? Did they drop the storyline of Scotty and Uhura sleeping together from the last movie? How great is it seeing Shatner fight himself in the prison break scene? Did Christopher Plummer's character ever read anyone other than Shakespeare? And we can all agree that the signatures at the end are great? PLUS: A history of the importance of various Dee Vee Dee extras!  Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country stars William Shatner, Leonard Nimoy, DeForest Kelley, James Doohan, Walter Koenig, Nichelle Nichols, George Takei, Kim Cattrall, Mark Lenard, Grace Lee Whitney, Bock Peters, Kurtwood Smith, David Warner, Christopher Plummer, and Michael Dorn as Colonel Worf; directed by Nicholas Meyer. The Nexus is a WHM podcast where the guys futilely go through two Star Trek series at the same time. Thank you so much for continuing to support our family of shows—we couldn't do it without you! Part 2: When Guizella Rocabado leaves her home in Bolivia to pursue her education in the United States, her plan hits an unexpected snag. LaShana Lewis grew up in East St. Louis, Illinois, where a love of the night sky led her to the Saint Louis Science Center as a longtime volunteer, and later a docent presenting talks on astronomy and aeronautics. She studied computational mathematics at Michigan Technological University, earned a HarvardX honor certificate in computer science, and attended NASA Space Camp. Now based in Los Angeles, LaShana serves on the board of STEAM Superheroes, a nonprofit inspired by Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols' legacy, and leads L. M. Lewis Consulting, bringing over 20 years of experience in tech, strategy, and inclusive leadership. Dr. Guizella Rocabado is an assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Nevada Las Vegas. Her research focuses on chemistry education. She is mainly interested in uncovering the narratives of success of students from all backgrounds. Bringing diversity to STEM fields is a great focus of her work. On June 4, 1982, Nicholas Meyer arguably saved the franchise by redefining it as a space opera mashup of Horatio Hornblower and Run Silent Run Deep, with a virtuosic score by the great James Horner. Instead of making sequel to 1979's STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE, Meyer cunningly chose to forge a follow-up to the 1967 episode “Space Seed,” reuniting Ricardo Montalban with the iconic role of Khan, unleashing his towering performance as the ultimate antagonist. (And stick around until the end for a shocking decision about what our next movie will be!)

Actress Nichelle Nichols is best remembered for playing Lieutenant Uhura in the original Star Trek series. Landing the role was a personal win for Nichols, making her one of the first African American women on a major TV show. But a greater win was to come of it. Nichols had actually resigned from Star Trek after its first season, to return to her theater work. But then she met Martin Luther King Jr., who urged her not to leave. For the first time, he said, African Americans were being seen on TV as intelligent people who could do anything, even go to space. By playing Lieutenant Uhura, Nichols was achieving a greater win—showing Black women and children what they could become. It reminds me of the time James and John asked Jesus for the two best positions in His kingdom (Mark 10:37). What personal wins such positions would be! Jesus not only explained the painful realities of their request (vv. 38–40) but called them to higher goals, saying, “whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant” (v. 43). His followers weren’t to seek personal wins alone but, like Him, use their positions to serve others (v. 45). Nichelle Nichols stayed with Star Trek for the greater win it provided for African Americans. May we too never be content with a personal win alone but use whatever position we gain to serve others in His name.
