Here comes the rough patch, folks. While these TOS episodes for the most part didn't light our worlds on fire, they did get the gears turning in this discussion. How did Star Trek: TOS reflect Cold War fears and liberal anxieties? Why does Kirk HAVE to kiss someone every episode when it's not even Spock? IS Bones or Spock the best character of the entire franchise? Anika does 133 jumps while Liz infiltrates a Klingon ship. What could go wrong? Well, this episode is late, so... Yes, we are discussing season 1, episode 9 of Star Trek: Discovery, "Into the Forest I Go". A nice walk in the woods! Everyone comes home! Do all Starfleet captains disobey orders? Actually yes! Despite the stereotypes, the biggest exception is Kirk in TOS … and Liz has a theory about why that changed "This conversation reminds me of a Tumblr post that mildly irritated me two weeks ago…" "You can't say anything against my baby Ash, okay? He's my baby girl." Mr. Anderson! Come in, sit down, put on your comfiest headphones. It's time to discuss possibly the most iconic of Keanu Reeves' many iconic roles. It's time for "The Matrix", a movie that arguably had as big an impact on how Hollywood works as the original "Star Wars" did some twenty-two years before. Reeves is Neo, a man who finds out his world is not what he believed and he might be the Chosen One humanity needs to save it from its unwitting slavery. But first he needs to learn Kung Fu. Also this week: an unexpected "Trek" connection, that steak, and Reeves leads. [The Matrix: 2:41]
The story of Star Trek's officially licensed 1994 stage production continues this week on The Trek Files as actor Adrian Cohen returns to share even more memories from Star Trek: The Lost Voyage of the Enterprise. Using a rare 1995 review from Total Theatre Magazine as the document of the week, Adrian and Larry Nemecek dig deeper into the ambitious London production that somehow brought transporters, Klingons, time travel, and a full-scale Enterprise bridge to the live stage — all during the height of 1990s Trek mania. This time, Adrian shares stories from the chaotic opening night when the lighting system catastrophically crashed just hours before curtain, forcing the audience to wait until 9:30 PM for a performance that somehow still became a hit with fans. He also reflects on the enormous pressure of portraying Mr. Spock, the audience reaction to seeing the crew materialize live on stage, and the bittersweet realization that the production's planned Broadway future would never quite materialize. Along the way, the conversation uncovers surprising connections to Adrian's later move to America, the early career of producer John Gore, and how one strange theatrical experiment became an almost-forgotten chapter of Star Trek history. What happens when a painter/sculptor and a sci-fi writer want to make an art film but can only get the budget for an action movie? The very, very confused "Johnny Mnemonic". Watch in confusion as Keanu is told to switch off his usual, easy charm to play a fairly wooden courier! Be annoyed as rights issues and studio meddling turned the much more interesting bodyguard character into a dull sidekick. And wonder why, for the love of God, they put Henry Rollins in this thing. Before there was streaming Trek or "immersive experiences," there was something almost unbelievable: an officially licensed Star Trek stage play in London in 1994. This week on The Trek Files, Larry Nemecek welcomes actor Adrian Cohen (credited at the time as Adrian Neil), who played Mr. Spock in the ambitious theatrical production mounted during the height of the Star Trek: The Next Generation era. Using a clipping from the London Evening Standard as the document of the week, Adrian recounts the surreal experience of stepping onto a full-scale Enterprise bridge in front of packed houses of passionate British Trek fans. What began as a skeptical audition ("I can't play Spock!") quickly evolved into a whirlwind production featuring transporter effects, Klingons, time travel, elaborate costume changes, and even an Enterprise flying out over the audience. Adrian and Larry explore how producer John Gore approached the material with both reverence and playful theatricality, creating something that celebrated Star Trek rather than parodying it. Along the way, Adrian shares memories of discovering just how intense Trek fandom could be, the pressure of channeling Leonard Nimoy's iconic presence, and the unexpectedly emotional reaction from audiences seeing Star Trek brought to life on stage for the very first time. This week, The Trek Files points a spotlight at a little-known corner of improbable yet completely inevitable Trek history. Drunk Duck has been around for 24 years now and in that time we've been the home for thousands of creators. We're a happy collaborative community that celebrates people's personal creative efforts, all for free, though we do super appreciate people's support through advertising and Patreon. Above all we are egalitarian and community driven, we support diversity of style, talent, and since it's pride month; gender and sexuality too. The creativity of humans on projects that they're passionate about and want to share with others is why we exist. Generative Ai is something we don't support on the site though. We had open discussions about it when it was blowing up and decided in the end that it doesn't fit with the vibe of our site. At its heart it's simply a copyright theft machine that spits of generic pastiche using people's genuine copyrighted creations as fuel, openly stealing their IP and regurgitating an averaged out imitation. We felt so strongly we wrote it into our site's Terms Of Service and appointed Tantz Aerine as our Tzarina in charge of policing that. No one person represents what we are. We support diversity and creation and that's all. This week our best-off from Gunwallace is: Patchwork and Lace - Darkness abounds, walking into a dark tomb, past shadows and demon parasites, into mysteries beyond light and human understanding. Deep underground where humans were never meant to venture, learning horrific truths about the universe and what lies beyond… The distorted bass line takes you down… deep down. Thirty years ago, Star Trek: First Contact brought one of the franchise's most important moments to life: humanity's first meeting with the Vulcans. This week on The Trek Files, host Larry Nemecek welcomes actor, writer, and Does It Fly? co-host Tamara Krinsky for a uniquely personal look behind the scenes of that iconic sequence. Using an original production call sheet from April 23, 1996, the conversation takes us to the nighttime shoot at Charlton Flats in the Angeles National Forest, where dozens of extras helped populate the post-war settlement that would witness history. Among them was a young aspiring actor named Tamara, hoping to gain experience and maybe earn a coveted SAG card. What happened next was something straight out of Hollywood legend. During filming, director Jonathan Frakes singled Tamara out from among the crowd, rebuilding part of the scene around her reaction shot. Her featured appearance in the finished film earned her a day-player contract, a SAG membership, and a memory that has stayed with her ever since. Along the way, Tamara shares stories of chilly overnight shoots, watching the legendary cast at work, and experiencing firsthand the creation of one of Star Trek's most beloved cinematic moments. Well, it took a lot longer than the writers hoped, but a third "Bill & Ted" finally graced our screens in 2020! With most of the world locked indoors, maybe all we really needed was a film with a simple message lacking in any cynicism. After your hosts' cool reception to "Bogus Journey" last week, did the more straightforward "Bill & Ted Face the Music" resonate with us? Listen and find out! Also this week: many side plots, the mystery of Cudi, and oddly touching moments! [B&TFTM: 01:35]
Effie and Dave have finally arrived at "Spock's Brain", oft-fingered as the worst episode of Star Trek ever made! Is it that? We'll get into it, maman! There sure be some rough whittlin' in this woodworkin' shop!
The Trek Files welcomes back visual effects veteran Stuart Ziff for a firsthand trip into the making of Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home. This time, the documents are original production call sheets from April 1986, detailing the now-legendary "B-Tank" shoot where the Klingon Bird-of-Prey splashed down into San Francisco Bay with George and Gracie the humpback whales. Stu recalls the practical filmmaking wizardry behind the scenes: giant wave machines, lightning rigs, whale effects, and an enormous outdoor water tank built on the Paramount lot. Along the way, he shares stories about building a mechanical whale eye (for the wrong side of the whale), experimenting with blue dye for the tank water, and watching old Hollywood effects crews create movie magic in real time. Larry and Stu also circle back to Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Stu's experiences during the turbulent Robert Abel & Associates era, including a revealing memory involving a young Paramount executive named Jeffrey Katzenberg. It's a fond look back at the kind of filmmaking that required wind machines, carbon-arc lightning effects, scuba divers, towels, and "wetsuits for cast and crew." Plus: Stu discusses the new documentary being produced about his life and career, and how fans can help support it. Fantasy Baseball Live! – May 24, 2026Segments 1 and 2 – Review the weekend gamesAdditional Notes:1.With the struggles of Steven Kwan this season, Travis Bazzana has been moved to the leadoff spot.a.What is your assessment of him so far this season?b.When do we pull the trigger on Steven Kwan and throw him on the waiver wire – he's hitting .199 with 1 home run and 2 SB. Granted, he also has a .224 BABIP, so I would expect a correction. But the xERA is still only .223. Yikes!2.Kevin Alcantara is getting another shot. He can't hit, but there is speed and power. Your thoughts.a.BTW, quietly Spencer Jones was demoted last week. The fanfare of a demotion is never the same as that of a promotion.3.So it's not Franklin Arias at shortstop, the Red Sox are turning to Marcelo Mayer and his .216 batting average and .286 OBP. a.I really missed on this one. The bat speed is clearly there – ranking in the top quartile of the leagues, but his 87 mph EV and 9% of loft is making him an easy out. Makes great contact, it's just weak.i.Your thoughts?4.Gerrit Cole returned and the velo was spot on. The swing miss of his secondary stuff was not quite there but overall he looked good.a.Your thoughts?5.Cristopher Sanchez has pitched 37.2 of scoreless innings. How is that possible? He's also pitching extremely deep into games. Just dominant.6.Jonah Tong quietly got the call but it appears he will pitch out of the bullpen.a.Any interest?7.Taj Bradley is back, touching 100 mph and shoving it. On Saturday, he pitched 5 innings of one run ball, striking out 7.8.Zack Wheeler has been dominant since returning from TOS. I thought pitchers didn't come back very well from that? We've got shockingly little Majel in the TOS episode that ostensibly is a spotlight focus on her. Then we're in to the wild world of Lwaxana Troi as she gets kidnapped by Ferengi in TNG and that version of the Ferengi are the absolute worst. Like Internet Guy worst. Before Star Trek: The Motion Picture reached theaters, its visual effects production was already becoming legendary… for all the wrong reasons. This week on The Trek Files, Larry Nemecek welcomes visual effects veteran Stuart Ziff for a firsthand account of the chaotic early days of TMP production under Robert Abel & Associates. Using internal memos and legal correspondence from 1977 and 1978, Larry and Stu trace the rapidly escalating budget, the mounting pressure from Paramount, and the growing realization that the ambitious effects work was spiraling out of control. But this isn't just a story about production disaster. Stu shares what it was actually like inside Abel's experimental effects operation during a revolutionary moment in Hollywood filmmaking, where engineers, artists, and filmmakers were inventing techniques on the fly in the years between Star Wars and the digital era. Along the way, Stu reveals how some of his work survived the production shakeup and made it into the finished film, including contributions to the unforgettable V'Ger probe sequence aboard the Enterprise bridge. It's a candid look at one of the most turbulent creative periods in Star Trek history, and a reminder that sometimes cinematic magic emerges from absolute chaos. Next stop on our Shore Leave jaunt is "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" and what can we say but: at least William Sadler is a delight. Your stalwarts find themselves a bit underwhelmed by this odd sequel, which maybe was a little TOO different from its predecessor. Something is just missing this time around, and no amount of weird robots or caked-up Martians can fix it. Also this week: sequel issues, more film trauma for little Chris, and forgetting their own rules.

What if Star Trek had spun off into a full-blown sitcom starring Lwaxana Troi? To kick off Season 15 of The Trek Files, Larry Nemecek welcomes actor, writer, comedian, and Star Trek: Lower Decks star Tawny Newsome for a deep dive into an early-1990s pitch centered on Majel Barrett Roddenberry's Betazoid ambassador. The document up for discussion is a never-produced sitcom concept built around Lwaxana Troi; equal parts fish-out-of-water comedy, family chaos, and larger-than-life Trek energy. Together, Larry and Tawny unpack why the pitch feels both very of-its-time and strangely ahead of its time, especially now that Star Trek comedy has found new life through projects like Lower Decks. As someone who has not only starred in Trek comedy but also developed her own comedic Trek ideas, Tawny brings a unique perspective to the conversation: what makes sci-fi comedy work and how Gene Roddenberry's world always had room for humor alongside the philosophy and adventure. It's a fascinating look at a road not taken in Star Trek history and a reminder that sometimes the weirdest ideas in the archive are the most revealing. In 1996, Star Trek celebrated its 30th anniversary with two of the most beloved episodes in the entire franchise — Voyager's 'Flashback' and Deep Space Nine's 'Trials and Tribble-ations.' This week we're looking at arguably the reason the reprehensible "Section 31" exists: the excellent "Everything Everywhere All At Once"! In a movie that turns the Chosen One narrative on its head, Michelle Yeoh plays Evelyn, who is the best hope for the multiverse because she is the worst version of herself. Brace yourself for "Section 31", the abysmal "Star Trek" movie that's a mashup of all the worst ideas from your favorite franchises and none of the good ones! Despite the universe seeming to not want it to happen, what had once been planned as a Shazad Latif–led spy series instead became a Michelle Yeoh heist vehicle. When Captain Kirk demands his day in court, the evidence isn't on his side and neither is an old flame. But after Spock starts kicking the computer's ass at chess, they move the proceedings to the Entrepreneur so that Kirk can save the ship from another sweaty rambler. Which lesson could NuTrek take from this episode? What was the other name option for Jamie? When is it ok to put eggs down the garbage disposal? It's the episode that doesn't need to explain jettisoning the pod. Support the production of Greatest Trek Get a thing at podshop.biz! Sign up for our mailing list! Keep your voice down as we make our way to a Marvel-ish library in "Labyrinths"! The race is on to the final clue and Michael has to endure one of the more tedious "Trek" tropes: going into your own mind made of recycled sets! Meanwhile, Moll leads a coup to become Queen Breen! Just Won a Natty/Indianapolis Vibes Starts at 0:51 No crying this time, but we do think we can have nice things now. You get out of it what you put into it; the UMHoops guys are probably experiencing the highest of highs. The 2023 football championship was a thing no other fanbase has experienced; this is what a normal natty feels like. Some of us survived the 2023-24 team. The story begins with the Ellerbe years, the Beilein era absolutely helped build this. Don't resent the Fab Five, but they unfairly had to represent what Michigan could be. Reconsidering the Juwan era, the heart condition, how badly he needed a GM. Beilein was spiritually (and literally) present for this team; loudest the stadium got before Michigan hit a three was when they showed him. Very unselfish team. Built through the portal—Cronin was never going to be a good fit for Mara, Rez wasn't going to have a role after Illinois got the other Ivisic, Cadeau was struggling in a bad system at UNC, Yaxel used the portal to get here from JUCO via UAB, Roddy Gayle was the national glue guy of the year, Nimari was here three years through two coaching changes, and Will Tschetter was a five-year player who took a smaller role: nobody can make a good faith argument that any of these guys don't belong here. [The rest of the writeup and the player after THE JUMP] 2. The UConn Game Starts at 27:50 Takes hotter than the rims during the final last night. Story of the game was UConn fouling the crap out of Michigan from literally the tip. Miss the first Cadeau and-one, then hit 24 free throws in a row to offset the terrible threes, until Roddy missed his pair. Snakebit shooting because Rez/Mara/Yax kept getting mismatches down low, but Michigan was able to play their bigs together, and that just made it impossible for UConn to score. Felt like Lendeborg was himself on defense; offensively he was obviously hobbled. Their communication was fantastic, and there weren't mismatches for UConn to hunt. A time or two they got Mara versus Karaban on the perimeter or something, but they didn't get backcut once. Tarris was basically shut down by Mara. Only thing they got were those ORebs, which were hat tips to them and also related to Michigan taking way the three. Next year Trey McKenney; graded on a curve he made 2 of Michigan's three jumpers, including the dagger. The Rube Goldberg three. Cadeau vs the Cadeau we thought we were getting. 3. How this Team Came Together Starts at 59:16 Revisiting how the roster came together, May's eye for talent, because every guy he got at FAU wound up a star somewhere. You can't actually build from the portal; if that's the lesson they're taking from this team they're going to get lit up. Cadeau cleaned up the TOs (but still commits them at the end of the game his banana peel). On the human to athlete personality spectrum, Mara is a normal human being, who never should have been paired with Cronin—all little guys who play basketball are born killers because you have to be, but it's common for bigs to be like that. Mara was the best player; he developed into a beast by the end of the year. Transfer teams: if you look at the rest of the top ten four didn't make the Tournament; Michigan was the only protected seed that took a lot of transfers. St. John's and Louisville were the others. Once you're been at a school a year you're not a transfer anymore. Cig vs May: Cignetti relied more on his JMU transfers. It's especially hard to recreate what Michigan did defensively, because at the end these guys won a title by doing the best job of anybody of playing with each other. Introducing the Bobby Hurley Index: How many photos do you look like Jim Carrey in The Mask? 4. Next Year Starts at 1:38:41 Are they looking at the portal list or the list of guys projected to the late 1st/early 2nd round? Mara and Rez are probably done—small chance they get Rez back. Cason going to redshirt. Gayle, Burnett, Yaxel are out of eligibility. Cadeau and McKinney: best backcourt in the country next year? McCoy is Charles Matthews-ish, going to be a major defensive presence; if you get two years out of him he's a big get but he doesn't have a deep shot, might be freshman Darius Morris or what we wanted Rubin Jones (PG who can guard 1-4) to be. Recruited lots of SFs: Grady? Liburd? Brown? All going to be 6'5" gumby-armed switchable guards. Backup PG: can McCoy or McKenney can play point for 10 mpg. Do they have a wing? Want that guy to be switchable; Seth thinks they're going to have a big war chest to find an NBA four who can play the three in addition to two bigs. Goodman will be next year's Tschetter. Need three portal bigs. Is Dusty May the #1 coach you would want to have if you were looking for one right now? UNC search was Tommy Lloyd and Dusty May right? MUSIC: "La Di Da"—Heavy Weighs the King "Don't Be Mad"—PiranhaMob "Up and Away"—Cursive “Across 110th Street”—JJ Johnson and his Orchestra
When the Entrepreneur tests out time-travel, Captain Kirk's questionable use of the tractor beam results in past people getting beamed aboard. But after sharing way too much information and assessing their historical significance, Spock figures out how to slingshot everyone back to the future and return the past people to their time. What would make Ben and Adam conspicuous as time travelers? Who else built a F-104 model as a child? How could school shootings be better? It's the episode where everyone's mind is on soup day. In "Erigah", we've caught up to our plucky bandits, and one of them is in a bad way. Worse still: uncle has come calling! Meanwhile, the B team is trying to get to the bottom of the latest clue. And in both cases, we have a "Discovery" superpower: sudden backstory out of nowhere! Turns out Rayner has a long history with the Breen, while Jett gets a Poe Dameron style upgrade! Would've been nice if any of this had been mentioned earlier... Also this week: conclusion jumping, antagonist v. villain, and remaining side-love! When Kirk beams down for a house party on Cestus III, what he finds instead is an aerial bombardment and one very angry outpost survivor. But when the Enterprise gives chase and the Metrons sense violent intent, a broadcast death match is the only suggestion for conflict resolution. Are Spock and McCoy capable of effectively insulting each other? What kind of utensil can you bring to a dinner party? Is bamboo strong enough to make a bazooka out of? It's the episode that is somewhat diminished by O'Herlihy's presence. Support the production of Greatest Trek Get a thing at podshop.biz! Sign up for our mailing list! Things Discussed: Wisconsin out, Texas in: Brian still wants the entire university excised from the Tournament. St Louis didn't have a second big, didn't have the guards to do what Wisconsin did. Good news for Sweet 16: ISU (minus Jefferson) and Alabama (minus Holloway) don't match up. Beautiful basketball: Dusty to Craig, no way to guarantee it's that pretty. Yax be a star time. A yard never looks that good unless there are major basketball feelings going on. Threes are random, five-out shooting teams (Wisconsin, Alabama) have random results, but you need a guard (e.g Nick Boyd) who can take advantage of the space created by pulling the center out. Labaran Philon is a dude, gotta fight through screens. Thing about Alabama is they only have one big—most of the team are 6-8 wings, and they can only play Sherrell 20mpg. Don't force TOs. Can't rebound! They should get ravaged in the paint. Texas, Georgia, Zaga, Purdue all got massive OReb rates. Long rebound luck game: where do the missed quick threes carom? Need to have everybody put up a poster dunk in practice and prepare to get back after. Also without Holloway they only have two guards on the roster. They play fast, might run Philon out of juice. Painful basketball teams: Will Wade back to LSU? Ben McCollum turns basketball into an Iowa football game. Funny how if you just asked, in a neutral state, if both Alabama's football and basketball coaches would rather be at Michigan they'd take you up in a heartbeat. Iowa State: Dead in the water without Jefferson, no way that injury is okay by Elite Eight right? He couldn't put weight on it. Tennessee are bullies up front, fear them more than non-Jefferson ISU. Hockey: This stupid tournament format means we can't make predictions because being the #1 overall seed doesn't matter—you go to Albany and get Penn State in the 2nd round. Women's Basketball: Like their chances to beat Louisville because we can pest them out of the building, but beating Texas in Texas is tough. Put a "4" over the quarter number on the scoreboard so Swordsy thinks it's the end of the game. UNC a threat to take Dusty? His new contract should be a $7.5M buyout (saw $4M reported?) but that's not as big as some others. Think if we survived Indiana we survived UNC, which is Job #2 in a worse conference than the Big Ten, where Michigan is Job #1.
It's that time again; the first season of a new "Trek" series has come and gone so we're going to do our general overview first impressions chat! When the Entrepreneur is crossing a space desert on the way to Beta VI, the crew detect an unmapped planet and no one seems interested in stopping by. But after Sulu and Kirk disappear from the bridge, an away team beams down to find their chaos agent poised for an unfair fight. What's the best lead-in for a Dr. McCoy impression? Who hasn't seen Sinners? How many things can a sharpie dick mean? It's the episode that touched the void. Support the production of Greatest Trek Get a thing at podshop.biz! Thoughts on how to handle Wheeler this season?2.What did you think of Tatsuya Imai debut? He averaged 93.3 MPH with his fastball.3.I'm sure we will discuss Josh Hader in the next segment, but there is no timetable yet for him to start throwing. How are you handling Hader this season? He went in the 11th round in LABR, so people seem concerned.4.MLB.TV has changed – I'll explain.Segment 3 – Closer Report1.The Closer Report was relatively stable until the trade deadline and then became volatile in August. Looking at the board, do you see a stable closer board this season, or is it just too hard to predict?t?2.We will go through each team and discuss the closer situation.3.What are your five sleepers for saves this season?4.Do you have a couple of deep sleepers that you could recommend?
When Commander Archer stages a mutiny aboard the ISS Enterprise, Captain Forrest gets thrown in the brig and T'Pol gets promoted to first officer. But after a Tholian warp signature leads them to a TOS-era Defiant, the Dustbuster club restores power just in time to see their ship get destroyed. Who is definitely picking up the phone in this era? How is the CrossFit of pain different from the Orange Theory of pain? What's the worst thing about the agonizer booth? It's the episode that definitely had crack out of frame. Support the production of The Greatest Generation Get a thing at podshop.biz! Sign up for our mailing list!
