Tips para aprender un idioma. Hace más de 25 años que me dedico a la enseñanza de idiomas, tanto de español como de inglés. En este podcast quiero compartir unas reflexiones para todos aquellos que estén empezando a aprender o estudiar un idioma y también para aquellos que, tal vez, ya empezaron pero van un poco perdidos. ¿Qué quiero decir con aprender un idioma efectivamente? En primer lugar cuando empiezas a estudiar un idioma se entiende que tienes una motivación. No es casual que use la palabra motivación en primer lugar ya que sin ella será muy difícil llevar esta tarea a buen puerto. Sea que el curso lo pagues de tu bolsillo, o que te lo regalen y sea gratis, siempre necesitarás la motivación: para viajar, para conocer otras culturas, por negocios, “por necesidad / obligación”. Esta última motivación no lo es tanto ya que si alguien te obliga a estudiar un idioma (por ejemplo tu jefe) para darte un aumento de sueldo o para promocionarte en la empresa o para viajar para la empresa, tengo serias dudas de que lo logres. Esto lo digo por experiencia como profesor que ha enseñado en varias empresas en diferentes países. En segundo lugar debes saber que cuando decides comenzar a estudiar o perfeccionar un idioma, será necesario disponer de un tiempo para dedicarte a estudiar. Esta parte es la que a muchos estudiantes no les gusta pero lamentablemente es así. Hay algo que se llama consolidación, esto significa que todo aquello que estudias en una clase luego deberás consolidarlo en tu casa dedicándole un poco de tiempo, el que tu quieras, para volver a ver lo visto en clase, hacer algún ejercicio escrito o de comprensión auditiva, etc. De lo contrario si este proceso de consolidación no se produce y simplemente asistes a clase, el proceso estará incompleto y en la mayoría de los casos no servirá de mucho. El progreso será lento y costoso. En tercer lugar será recomendable que durante la clase tomes notas de lo que dice el profesor o la profesora para que las cosas no queden “en el aire” y también tomar notas durante el proceso de consolidación fuera de la clase; esto sirve para poder luego consultar las dudas con el profesor o la profesora. Este proceso de tomar notas debería ser natural y espontáneo en una persona que está estudiando cualquier cosa no solo idiomas y es muy difícil para el tutor o tutora tener que recordárselo al alumno o alumna sobre todo si son adultos. En cuarto lugar no recurrir a la traducción. Yo sé que muchos alumnos recurren a la traducción porque se sienten más “seguros” pero realmente es un muy mal hábito. Si algo te da tu tutor o tutora son las herramientas para que poco a poco dependas cada vez menos de la traducción. Una cosa es traducir palabras puntuales, sobre todo aquellas que son más difíciles y otra muy diferente es la doble operatoria de - pensar en tu idioma- traducir-hablar. Esto no sirve de nada. En quinto lugar y para terminar, es muy importante tratar de mantener una interacción con nativos de la lengua que estás aprendiendo ya que allí te sentirás libre para hablar a tu ritmo y será una posibilidad para aprender más en otro entorno.
