We’ve located Wednesday so it’s time to chat. This week Beth asked the question: If you could only keep 10 projects what would they be? That simple question triggered a lot of stash searching and two lists that are really not all of the projects we would keep. Also, Gary cheated on his list. But Beth made a second list, so basically, we ignored the 10-project limitation. We also have a drawing this week for one of two Avlea Folk Fabric bookmark kits. Embroidery artist Ekaterina (Kate) Sinchinova joins us this week for a show sponsored by the Embroiderers’ Guild of America at egausa.org. Kate describes herself as creating “realistic embroidery with a 3D effect.” What that means is she stitches outstanding pieces of landscape needleart using scenes near her home on the east coast. The depth and realism of her work is stunning. Why does she use thread instead of paint or other media? Because threads aren’t messy. We hope you enjoy the conversation and encourage you to spend some time browsing her gallery at her website. We also appreciate it if you support our sponsor, the Embroiderers’ Guild of America, and consider becoming a Fiber Talk Patreon member at Patreon.com/FiberTalk.–Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video You can listen by using the player above or you can subscribe to Fiber Talk through iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Audible, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Podbay, and Podbean. Why not buy a board game from our sponsors Kienda: kienda.co.uk/polyhedroncollider In Episode 171 of the Polyhedron Collider Cast, we blast off into space, dive into the depths, battle for ancient Greek supremacy, and try our luck at the slot machine of strategy—all in one beautifully unhinged episode. We kick things off with Jackpot: Set the Reel, coming to Kickstarter soon. This quick little card game promises to blend slot machines/fruit machines with strategic card play. Jackpot looks light, but is there enough game behind the glitter? We spin the reels and find out. And what the hell is a puggy! We then explore the depth in Fathom, an entry level board game about exploring the depths and cataloguing its divergent wildlife. Bac to the classics, well sort of, as we go in depth on Cyclades: Legendary Edition, the mythological area-control game full of gods, monsters, tactical auctions, and being a bigger dick than Zeus himself. Does it still hold up? And who summoned a Kraken again? And last of all we go to outer space in Transgalactica, a controversial game of going up tracks and colonising space. Expect the usual dose of board game insight, over analysis, mild nonsense, and just enough arguing to keep things interesting.

If you spend more than 30 sec. exploring this project, you will quickly discover that the dress is a powerful symbol of what people of all kinds and from many cultures have experienced in their lives, many of those experiences worse than you can imagine. In this week’s conversation, we are privileged to hear the story of the Red Dress and, I hope, like me, you will be moved by what Kirstie has provided for us. Enjoy the story, share it with others, and consider buying the book about the project. It’s a good one. Kirstie will be back sometime in late August or early September to tell us about how the dress was created and how she incorporated so much embroidery from so many people.–Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video You can listen by using the player above or you can subscribe to Fiber Talk through iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Audible, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Podbay, and Podbean. Why not buy a board game from our sponsors Kienda: kienda.co.uk/polyhedroncollider In Episode 170 of the Polyhedron Collider Cast, we dive into three very different games that prove once again how gloriously diverse the tabletop hobby can be, from classic fantasy adventures that make Steve feel old, to courtly power plays and master-crafted violins. First we step into the dark, nostalgic world of Fighting Fantasy Adventures, the classic adventure books reimagined as a co-op board game by legendary designer Martin Wallace. Can this tabletop take on the iconic solo gamebooks capture the magic and mayhem? We roll the dice and try not to die (spoiler: we died).  Take the Throne is a fast-paced, strategic bluffing game that is heading to Kickstarter soon, and we've got an early look. With bluffing, tactical positioning, and a tight rule set, Take the Throne might just be your next favourite lunch-break skirmish. Finally, we fine-tune our skills in Luthier, a gorgeous and deeply thematic euro-game of crafting musical instruments for royalty, rich patrons and prestige. With its unique mechanics and stunning presentation, it struck a chord with us!

It took considerable determination, much trial and error, and honest feedback from artist friends to develop her techniques. In our conversation, we learn how this approach came together and how Alissa gets her photos from camera to linen to stitched pieces that are admired in galleries. Sankoré: The Pride of Mansa Musa We dive into this beautiful and brain-burning game of knowledge, trade, and influence. Set in medieval Timbuktu, Sankoré blends economic planning with cultural prestige—so naturally, we try to out-teach each other. Civolution What happens when you blend civilisation building with a modular tech tree and evolving asymmetry? Civolution aims to answer that. We dig into the mechanisms, the innovation, and whether it actually feels like building a civilisation. Timber Town Time to grab your axe and get to work! This charming, engine-building game about lumberjacks and town planning took us by surprise. It's a lot deeper than it looks—and yes, we make at least three wood-related puns. So grab a brew, get comfy, and join us for another episode of tabletop talk and trite tangents.

One way the needlework world will celebrate America’s 250th anniversary is the America’s Tapestry project. This week we talk to Stefan Romero, creator and driving force behind the project. America’s Tapestry involves original art that tells mostly unknown stories about how people in the 13 colonies contributed to the Revolutionary War effort. The art will be stitched by local EGA Guilds and other groups of stitchers in the 13 states. In our conversation with Stefan, we learn how the project came to be, what’s involved in creating these pieces of needle art, and how stitchers from across the country can participate. We’re making buttons this week with our guest Gina Barrett of Gina-B Silkworks. Actually, we’re exploring all types of passementerie with a very talented designer and author. Her start was making buttons in the costume world. That beginning blossomed into a business that offers passementerie supplies for a wide variety of techniques, a long list of books and instruction manuals, TV shows, and classes and workshops. If you’ve never made Dorset or thread-wrapped buttons, now is the time to give it a try. You may get addicted and want to try your own button-a-day challenge.–Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: This show is also available on FlossTube. Click here to view it. The day between Tuesday and Thursday has arrived so we seized the opportunity to talk about needlework. This week’s topics include a drawing to win one of two Immaculate Heart kits from Clara Warschauer of clarastitching.com. The kits are for her free workshop on June 21. We explain how to enter the drawing in the show (yes, you have to listen). We also talk about the list of items we’re posting for Patreon members (subscribe at patreon.com/FiberTalk), Dorset and wrapped buttons, fast fashion and the impact it’s having at several levels, Nicola Jarvis’ “Life in Seasons” book (you want this book), and a couple of schedule changes. Becky Noland of Lucy Beam joins us this week. We learn about dumpster diving with grandma to acquire fabrics, how Becky moved from interior design to creating cross stitch charts, and her addiction to buying antique samplers. Fortunately for us, she thoroughly enjoys reproducing those samplers. Look for an Adam and Eve sampler this summer. Becky and Sylvia Stecker of Running with Needles and Scissor will be teaching classes for the inaugural Sampler University, which is part of the EGA National Seminar. In this week’s conversation, we talk about the sewing roll project Becky designed for the event. You’ll do the stitching ahead of time and the class will involve finishing the stitching into the sewing roll so you’ll have a completed piece when you head home from Dallas. All of the information is at egausa.org in the Events section.–Gary Listen to the podcast: This show is also available on FlossTube. Click here to view it.
