Our topic this week is needle art, our artist is Fleur Woods, and our sponsor is Avlea Folk Embroidery (avleafolkembroidery.com). Fleur started her career in the corporate arena to “see how the world works.” It worked by suppressing her creativity. She left the 9-to-5 world and dabbled in various art media as she tried to find what it was that allowed her to express what was in her mind. A conversation led her to needle and thread and she hasn’t quit since. Woods also just published her first book, The Untamed Thread, which is designed to provide a structure to help you discover your creative voice. Purchase it from your favorite bookseller and be sure to visit Fleur’s website and follow her social-media accounts. Also watch for an upcoming Fiber Talk live show with Fleur in which we’ll explore her art.–Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video You can listen by using the player above or you can subscribe to Fiber Talk through iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Audible, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Podbay, and Podbean. The holiday season is a time for laughter, togetherness, and creating special memories. But for families managing food allergies, it can also bring unique challenges—extra planning, heightened stress, and the worry of staying safe during celebrations. In this episode, we're talking about how to balance the joy of the season with the realities of food allergy management. We're joined by licensed psychologist, Amanda Whitehouse, PhD, who will share thoughtful strategies for reducing holiday stress and anxiety, so you and your loved ones can focus on what truly matters—connection, celebration, and peace of mind.Resources to keep you in the know:Amanda Whitehouse, PhD - WebsiteDon't Feed the Fear Podcast @thefoodallergypyschologist - Follow on InstagramAmanda Whitehouse, Food Allergy Anxiety Psychologist - Follow on FacebookYou can find FAACT's Roundtable Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, Podbay, iHeart Radio, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube.Sponsored by: DBV TechnologiesThanks for listening! We’re joined this week by brilliant counted-canvas artist Wendy Moore. The show is made possible by CyberPointers (cyberpointers.org), the online chapter of ANG. The need to be creative transported Wendy from the science world to stage costume design. She moved to the Midwest and was exploring her love of Shakespeare when she was invited to an EGA meeting. That meeting opened the door to the counted-canvas-design career that we all enjoy today. In our conversation, we learn the details of Wendy’s interesting career path and her process for creating terrific needle art. Wendy’s pieces are available through online, in-person, chapter, and regional and national events. “If you can get six people together, I’ll teach a class.” We hope you enjoy the show and will consider taking a class from Wendy. For our final Wednesday conversation, we decided to do a recap of 2025 by naming our favorite needlework artist(s) of the year, the top item in the list of things we learned from 141 shows, and the one topic that stuck with us. We all had the same #1 artist, but Cindy and Gary had to go with our 1a selections because Beth was too fast with the keyboard. If you have a favorite needleworker interview from the 42 Sunday shows we did, let us know in the comments. Same goes for something new you learned from a year of Fiber Talk shows and something that stuck with you. Sunday’s guest: Wendy Moore–Beth, Cindy, and Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video. It's often said that the food on the Hanukkah table is more than just a meal—it's a powerful vehicle for storytelling, education, and a communal celebration of faith and resilience. Our guest this week is embroidery artist Nicole Chui. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderer’s Guild of America. Nicole describes her work as “colorful, loud, intense, messy, brash, and disruptive. She started in the fashion industry but her creative urges took her to a studio she shares with artists of other types so she can express her art in the unique way she prefers. That studio has provided opportunities to collaborate, which have proven beneficial to all of the artists. Nicole is also a football (soccer) player and owner of a football club. That sports connection has provided her with inspiration for several of her pieces. She is a fascinating talent who does needle art unlike anyone else. We all know the teen brain is still growing and changing—and that means it doesn't always think or act like an adult brain. The teen years are full of discovery, independence, and yes, a bit of risk-taking. But what happens when you add food allergies into the mix? How do brain development and decision-making affect how teens manage their safety and choices? To help us unpack this fascinating topic, we're joined by renowned psychologist, Nancy Rotter, PhD, who will share insights into how the teen brain works—and how parents, caregivers, and educators can better support young people navigating life with food allergies.Resources to keep you in the know:Nancy Rotter, PhD, Mass General FAACT Podcast Episode: Epinephrine 101FAACT's Living with Food Allergies: Dining OutFAACT's Reading Labels PosterYou can find FAACT's Roundtable Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, Podbay, iHeart Radio, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube.Sponsored by: DBV TechnologiesThanks for listening! To support Movember go to https://uk.movember.com/ In Episode 177 of the Polyhedron Collider Cast, the lads dive into four wildly different games—ranging from cinematic sci-fi terror to cosy druidic engine-building—with all the usual banter, questionable metaphors, and unsolicited opinions. We start at high altitude with Vantage, the new epic story based exploration game from Jamey Stegmaier and Stonemaier Games. Can we finally have a Stonemaier game that Andy actually likes? We then travel over the Misty Mountains and go full diggy diggy hole in Covenant from Devir, a worker placement game that is tight on actions and full of theme. Things then become calmer (and significantly greener) as we explore The Druids of Edora—a colourful, dice placement game from Stefan Feld. And finally, we head directly into the vents with our smart rifles ready to rock for Nemesis: Retaliation, the latest addition to Awaken Realms' survival-horror series. It’s always fun when Wednesday arrives and we get to talk about stitching. The first item on the list is a drawing for Clara Warschauer’s Goldwork Cross Star kit and the accompanying finishing kit from Ecclesiastical Sewing. These two kits will be taught in a free class Clara is offering Dec. 6. For details, visit Clara’s site at: https://www.clarastitching.com/free-goldwork-star-cross-workshop. Our main topic this week is the question of why we don’t always focus on the project(s) we’re most excited about and/or that challenge us most? Why do we frequently find ourselves working on projects that are easy instead? Is it time? Lack of focus? Trying to achieve a level of stitching quality that matches others? Also, what keeps us from playing with colors, threads, and designs to advance our stitching experiences. Please leave your thoughts about our conversation in the comments section. This week we're privileged to talk with designer Amie Corbin of Lola Crow Cross Stitch. The show is sponsored by the Embroiderer's Guild of America at egausa.org. Amie has sewn clothes and stitched all of her life. Her first full-time venture was making costumes for a belly-dance troupe. The pandemic changed things and she shifted to cross-stitch design and has rapidly built up a large and fascinating catalog of designs. In the conversation, we learn how that all happened and what's behind her many creative charts. Her latest design, “A Very Bigfoot Christmas” is a set of three ornaments. Through the end of November 2025, stitchers can get the charts by making a minimum $10 contribution to Meals on Wheels. We're joined this week by artist Rachel Wright of VirtuoSew Adventures. Ancient history, particularly Egypt, is what captivates and drives her embroidery. For Rachel, it's not the finished product that she enjoys. It's the process of developing a piece and the many adjustments that are involved in getting the needlework to tell the story she wants shared and does so in just the right way. When she needs a break from, what is intense work, she turns to canvas work for an escape. Her approach and insight into her inspiration can be explored in her book, “Dreams of Amarna: Stitching an Egyptological Adventure.” According to Anthea Godfrey, Artistic Director, The Embroiderers Guild, “Dreams of Amarna is an inspirational book that explores Rachel Mary Wright’s passion for ancient Egyptian culture and art. Her enthusiasm for reinventing the visual ideas she has come to admire manifests itself in her own textile journey, which will, I’m sure, encourage embroiderers to do the same.”—Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video You can listen by using the player above or you can subscribe to Fiber Talk through iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Audible, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Podbay, and Podbean. Earlier this month, more than 2,500 allergists and healthcare professionals gathered in Orlando, Florida, for the annual meeting of the American College of Allergy, Asthma & Immunology—better known as ACAAI. It's one of the biggest events of the year where experts share the latest research, treatments, and guidelines in allergy and immunology. We're thrilled to be joined by this year's keynote speaker, program chair—and FAACT Medical Board Member—Dr. Kristin Sokol, MD, MS, MPH, who shares highlights and key takeaways from this cutting-edge meeting.Resources to keep you in the know:American College of Allergy Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI)Schreiber Allergy: Kristin Sokol, M.D., MS, MPH, FACAAI, FAAAAIYou can find FAACT's Roundtable Podcast on Apple Podcasts, Pandora, Spotify, Podbay, iHeart Radio, or wherever you listen to podcasts.Follow us on Facebook, Instagram, BlueSky, Threads, LinkedIn, Pinterest, TikTok, and YouTube.Sponsored by: GenentechThanks for listening! The day after Tuesday has arrived and Cindy and Gary volunteered to spend some time talking about stitching. Our conversation focuses on new and upcoming Patreon shows and our Krista West conversation from Nov. 9. We spend most of the time talking about the two projects we plan to stitch from books we own. For Cindy, it's the Celeste Fig by Christine Burton from the Inspirations book “Design Collective, Vol. 1.” For Gary, it's Kevin the pheasant from Hazel Blomkamp's “Crewel Birds” book. We also talk about what we carry in our stitching “go bags.” If you want to support all of the needlework content we produce, please consider becoming a Patreon supporter at patreon.com/FiberTalk. You've probably heard of Oral Immunotherapy—or OIT—a treatment that's gaining attention in the food allergy world. But what's it really like to go through the process? Many families discover there's more to OIT than they expected. To help unpack the basics and offer clarity, we're talking with allergist, Dr. Brian Vickery, about what to know before beginning this journey. In Episode 176 of the Polyhedron Collider Cast, the lads tackle a monster lineup of games covering curses, canals, castles, and cyberpunk chaos. From deep Euros to dicey duels and dystopian roleplay, it's a feast of cardboard, neon and noodles. Hot from our painting challenge, we start with dark rituals and wicked words of Malediction in this spell-slinging game of grimdark miniature combat. Then it's onto Wroth, the latest offering from Chip Theory games; a dice pool area control game that full of neon colours. Things calm down (sort of) with the charming card game Canal Houses, all about building along the waterways of Amsterdam. Beautifully thematic, deeply puzzly, and wetter than a typical UK summer. Next up, we turn the dials and stoke the engines in Steam Power, a game that puts logistics and efficiency at the heart of its design—perfect for anyone who loves their cubes neatly aligned. But we can't help feel we've played it before. And in The White Castle Duel, Two players enter the castle, one player leaves (hopefully with honour intact). We test the head-to-head version of The White Castle and see if it captures the elegance and crunch of the original. Finally, we step into the neon rain for the Blade Runner RPG withe the second case file Fiery Angels, diving into a world of mystery, moral choices, and melancholy monologues. Expect less shooting, more brooding. And don't forget—you can join the discussion over on our [Discord server]! This week we are joined by designer Krista West of Avlea Folk Embroidery (avleafolkembroidery.com). But we're not talking (much) about her designs. Our focus for this conversation is Krista's design weeks, which are periodic multi-day sessions in which she shuts the world out so she can focus on moving her design work forward. While Krista sets aside entire weeks, the techniques and practices she uses will work for stitchers who are looking for a day/afternoon/couple of hours of uninterrupted/focused needlework time. In the conversation, we learn how Krista prepares for a session and how she stays focused for several days. At the end of the show, you'll also get a peek at some of the new things coming up from Avlea Folk Embroidery. Make some notes while you're listening and give Krista's techniques a try the next time you want to focus on your needlework, or any other project that's not getting enough attention.—Beth and Gary Listen to the podcast: Watch the video You can listen by using the player above or you can subscribe to Fiber Talk through iTunes, Amazon Music, Spotify, Audible, Google Podcasts, TuneIn, Podbay, and Podbean. The Embroiderers' Guild of America (egausa.org) is sponsoring this week's show about the America's Tapestry Delaware project. In our June 7, 2025 show, we met Stefan Romero, creator of the America's Tapestry project. The purpose of the project is to celebrate America's 250th anniversary with stitched panels from each of the 13 colonies that tell little-known stories about America's formative days. To learn all of the details, listen to that initial show with Stefan. This week, we meet with Stefan and Delaware co-chairs Becky Gutin and Amy Gilley to learn how they mapped out how to stitch the Delaware panel, their approach to making it possible for needleworkers of all skill levels to contribute to the panel, and what a stitching session is like. To keep up with the projects in all 13 colonies, visit americastapestry.com. To follow the Delaware project, join their Facebook group and/or follow them on Instagram. All links are listed below.
