Ninguna élite se ha jactado nunca de provenir de la esclavitud. Solo hay una excepción, la de los mamelucos de Egipto. Entre 1250 y 1517, durante 267 años, Egipto estuvo gobernado por hombres nacidos libres en las estepas del norte del Mar Negro y en las montañas del Cáucaso, que eran capturados cuando eran niños por tratantes de esclavos y luego vendidos a comerciantes italianos que los llevaban hasta Alejandría. Se les adiestraba en el oficio de las armas dentro de la ciudadela de El Cairo. El último sultán ayubí compró miles de mamelucos para ponerlos a su servicio y los acuarteló en una isla del Nilo llamada Rawda. A aquellos soldados se les conocía como bahríes y fueron quienes derrotaron a Luis IX de Francia en 1250, luego asesinaron al heredero ayubí y se quedaron con el sultanato. Unos años más tarde, en la batalla de Ayn Yalut, detuvieron a los mongoles que habían arrasado toda Eurasia sin conocer la derrota. Uno de ellos, Baybars, que había participado en el magnicidio y mató después a su propio sultán, gobernó durante dos décadas un imperio con un gran ejército, una temible flota, fortalezas y hasta un correo que unía Damasco y El Cairo en solo cuatro días. Instaló en su corte a un superviviente abasí y le proclamó califa, una jugada magistral que le dio la legitimidad que le faltaba de origen. Sus sucesores tomaron Antioquía, Trípoli y por fin Acre en 1291, poniendo fin así a dos siglos de presencia cruzada en Tierra Santa. El poder no se heredaba, se ganaba por prestigio militar. Cada emir mantenía su casa financiada con rentas de unas tierras que el sultán podía retirar cuando quisiera. La historia interna del sultanato mameluco es la lucha entre esas casas. Fue un imperio muy rico. La proverbial fertilidad del valle del Nilo estaba a su servicio, controlaban los puertos del levante y el comercio del mar Rojo, por el que entraban valiosos productos como la pimienta, el clavo o la seda. El Cairo creció y se transformó en una metrópolis muy poblada en la que floreció el arte, la literatura y el comercio. A mediados del siglo XIV llegó la peste negra y, con ella, la crisis. Los nuevos mamelucos empezaron a llegar del Cáucaso, pero lo esencial no cambió. Lo que no supieron hacer fue modernizar su ejército. Despreciaban las armas de fuego portátiles porque las consideraban indignas de un caballero. Los otomanos de Selim I aprovecharon esa ventaja y derrotaron al sultanato en 1517. El último sultán fue ahorcado por órdenes de la Sublime Puerta, pero los mamelucos se las apañaron para seguir mandando en Egipto como gobernadores otomanos hasta que Mehmet Ali mando que les fusilasen ya entrado el siglo XIX. In this episode we chat to Matthew Rowlinson, President and CEO at Solaris Resources to discuss the development of Warintza in Ecuador, one of the world's largest undeveloped copper projects.   We explore what differentiates Warintza from other major copper discoveries, the critical steps required to move a resource of this scale towards construction, and how Solaris is thinking about financing and ownership as the project becomes increasingly de-risked.   We also look at the wider copper market in particular; why the industry isn't building enough new mines despite forecasts of a future supply shortage, the growing importance of geopolitics and China's role in downstream refining, and what the mining industry needs to do to secure the social and political support required to develop the next generation of major copper mines. La fiebre de la inteligencia artificial ha venido acompañada de un frenesí en la construcción de centros de datos, grandes naves en las que se almacenan los servidores que permiten a esta tecnología funcionar. La infraestructura necesita suelo, suministro eléctrico y agua para refrigerar las máquinas. Las grandes tecnológicas como Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft y Oracle han comprometido 750.000 millones de dólares en proyectos por todo el mundo. El gasto en centros de datos de aquí a 2030 rondará los 3 billones de dólares. La capacidad de cómputo estadounidense pasaría de este modo de algo menos de 12 gigavatios a cinco veces esa cifra a finales de esta década. Contra ese despliegue se ha levantado la opinión pública en Estados Unidos con una insólita unanimidad. Según los sondeos más recientes el 71% de los estadounidenses se opone a que se construya uno en su municipio frente al 53% que dice lo mismo de una central nuclear. Lo llamativo es que quienes solo han oído hablar de estas instalaciones, pero nunca han visto una, se oponen en la misma proporción que quienes viven a menos de 10 kilómetros de una de ellas. Esto desarma por completo la explicación habitual. No se trata de un caso tradicional de NIMBY, acrónimo de “no en mi patio trasero”, sino de un juicio moral sobre la tecnología que albergan estos complejos en el que participa gente que jamás verá uno de cerca. La política ha traducido el estado de ánimo a velocidad admirable. Bernie Sanders ha pedido una moratoria nacional y, como las elecciones de medio mandato están cerca, los candidatos a la Cámara de Representantes y al Senado se han apresurado a incluir este tema dentro de sus promesas de campaña. Los que ya son senadores y los gobernadores estatales piden restricciones y auditorias sin importar que pertenezcan al partido Demócrata o al Republicano. En la calle el 75% de los demócratas y el 66% de los republicanos rechazan tener uno cerca de casa, así que el asunto parte a los dos partidos por la mitad. El suelo, por lo demás, es muy abundante en Estados Unidos. El cuello de botella real está en la red eléctrica. Las solicitudes de conexión pendientes suman 1 teravatio y solo Texas ha recibido peticiones por 474 gigavatios cuando su capacidad punta no pasa de 90. Es necesario antes instalar mucha capacidad nueva de generación, algo que llevará tiempo. Calvin #1: OpenAI's Python SDK has migrated to HTTPX2 The OpenAI Python SDK has migrated to HTTPX2, the Pydantic-stewarded fork of httpx. Pydantic picked it up citing "limited activity recently" in the original project, promising "a reliably maintained path forward." If you just use the default client, nothing to do. No code changes. The catch is TLS. Quoting the guide: HTTPX "previously verified certificates against the CA bundle provided by certifi. HTTPX2 instead uses the operating-system trust store, and the SDK no longer installs certifi." That "can break certificate verification in minimal container images without system CA certificates, environments using corporate TLS-inspecting proxies, and deployments that relied on a custom or modified certifi bundle." The fix is SSL_CERT_FILE or SSL_CERT_DIR, or pass your own ssl.SSLContext via verify. Deeper integrations need real edits: custom clients, auth handlers, hooks, and request mocking all take HTTPX2 objects now, and plain httpx is no longer pulled in transitively. So import httpx in your own code means declaring it yourself or moving over. Temporary escape hatch: a legacy HTTPX client Michael #2: TMOG - Native Task Manager for macOS, Windows, and Linux A native, deeply instrumented system monitor for macOS, Windows, and Linux, now in public beta - from Plummers' Software, i.e. Dave Plummer, who wrote the original Windows Task Manager and donated it to Microsoft in 1995. Wikipedia Three real native apps: Swift/AppKit on macOS, Win32 on Windows, C++/Qt 6 on Linux, with a shared C++ core keeping metric semantics aligned - no browser shell anywhere. One dense summary: CPU, clocks, thermals, GPU, memory, storage, network, energy, and the processes responsible for the load, all click-through. Calvin #3: wrapture - one wrapper for mocking, tracing, and observability Graham Dumpleton, author of wrapt and the original New Relic Python agent, has released wrapture. The name is wrapt plus capture. The core idea: wrap real code instead of replacing it, so the real code still runs while you watch every call. Name a method with wrapture.binding(Class, "method"), open a timeline(), and you get a tape of what actually happened. Real return values, real nesting, arguments normalised against real signatures. tape.tree() prints the call graph as it ran. One mechanism, three jobs: monkey patching with a real lifecycle (apply, remove, suspend, plus returns, raises, transforms_args), unit testing that asserts on real call flow instead of a flat MagicMock call list, and ad-hoc tracing of a running app. The testing pitch is error paths. Inject TimeoutError at the payment gateway, then assert the ledger was never written. Stubs and mocks are strict and spec-required, and there is deliberately no bare Mock(). Tracing needs no code at all. A wrapture.toml naming targets and a sink, run with python -m wrapture main.py, and you get a live call tree with timings. It captures ordinary logging calls as nested events, and with the otel extra it exports spans, metrics and correlated logs with W3C trace ids that join across services. Every line of code and docs was AI-written under their direction, and they say so up front. Two weeks from first commit, eleventh alpha, over 1000 tests, 150+ pages of docs. Alpha on PyPI, needs Python 3.12+ and wrapt 2.4.0+. La guerra de Ucrania ha entrado en una fase en la que ambos bandos atacan la retaguardia del contrario, pero el castigo no se reparte por igual. La retaguardia ucraniana es realmente la Unión Europea y el Reino Unido, que este año han aprobado un paquete de 90.000 millones de euros en ayuda y estudian otro paquete similar financiado con activos rusos congelados. Los centros logísticos del ejército ucraniano están realmente en Polonia, Alemania o Rumanía. Rusia, en cambio, paga la guerra con hidrocarburos que vende a descuento a China y la India, y sus aliados, Irán y Corea del Norte, están en la ruina. La asimetría se observa son un simple vistazo. Los drones ucranianos alcanzan objetivos hasta la misma Siberia y han inutilizado más de un tercio de la capacidad de refinamiento rusa, con la consiguiente crisis de suministro de combustible. Se han encontrado drones explosivos en un aeropuerto alemán, se han producido ciberataques contra los ferrocarriles polacos, un incendio en una empresa de defensa estonia, explosiones en polvorines italianos y búlgaros, y proliferan los saboteadores reclutados por Telegram. Los incidentes han pasado de unos 10 al mes en 2024 a unos 15 desde el mes de abril. La ambigüedad beneficia a Putin, porque atribuirle todo este desorden refuerza gratis su reputación. El objetivo es obviamente político. Trata de erosionar el apoyo occidental a Ucrania y agitar la política interna de Alemania, Francia, Finlandia, Estonia y Polonia, que tienen elecciones en los próximos meses. Pero la estrategia no termina de funcionar. Los europeos del este perciben cerca el peligro y redoblan su apoyo a Ucrania. En Polonia, Rumanía y los países bálticos la mayor parte de la población está a favor de seguir enviando dinero y armas a Ucrania. Algo similar sucede en Europa occidental. El reloj corre contra el Kremlin. El ejército ruso pierde unos 35.000 hombres al mes entre muertos y heridos, más de los que consigue reclutar pese a pagar primas de hasta 4 millones de rublos y sueldos para los soldados rasos 3 o 4 veces superiores al salario medio en Rusia. Sostener ese ritmo exigirá una movilización que equivaldría a admitir que no están ganando. Una movilización, además, hundiría la popularidad de Putin en el interior. Bloqueado el avance terrestre, al Kremlin le quedan dos tipos de escalada. La vertical, ya ensayada con ejercicios nucleares sorpresa, que sirva de aviso de que podría recurrir al uso del arsenal nuclear. Y la horizontal, que consistiría en ampliar la extensión del conflicto para congelarlo después en mejores condiciones. Todo aprovechándose de la actitud de Donald Trump que ha debilitado la disuasión hasta tal punto que la semana pasada su Gobierno tuvo que enviar en secreto a Moscú al director de la CIA para recordar a Putin que el artículo 5 sigue en pie. El centro de gravedad ya no está en el Donbás ni en ningún otro lugar del frente, sino en la resistencia de los países europeos y en su disposición a sostener a Ucrania durante el tiempo que sea necesario. Karen and Michelle are not here to tell you that pivoting is possible. They're here to tell you how. Episode 354 is a practical guide to breaking into a new industry when your current one has stalled. This episode is for the practitioner who is sitting in a dry sector right now and needs real steps to take. Karen and Michelle start by busting the myth that skills plus reputation walk seamlessly across industries, clarify exactly what does and doesn't travel with you. The episode is tactical and includes: how to reframe your existing portfolio through a new industry's lens, how to land a flagship project without working for free, four pathways to first opportunities in a new vertical, the mistakes to avoid when you're tempted to cut your rates, a realistic 3-to-6-month timeline with honest caveats, and the one concrete step you can take today. Karen is clear from the start that she is not speaking theoretically; she has had to take some of these steps herself, and the advice reflects it. Episode Highlights [01:22] The Myth That Skills Plus Reputation Walk Across Industries Unchanged: Karen names the belief that gets a lot of solo practitioners into trouble: that PR is PR everywhere, and their skills and reputation can carry them into a new sector without friction. Michelle validates the partial truth that media relations instincts, crisis communications, executive positioning, and messaging discipline, those are your core muscles, and they do travel. What doesn't travel: industry vocabulary, regulatory landscape, buyer psychology, and the media relationships themselves. A healthcare reporter relationship means nothing in fintech. Plan for that rather than hoping otherwise. [02:22] Relationships Don't Transfer — But Skills Do, and That's Enough to Start: Michelle's framing is direct: don't count on your contacts to save you. What saves you is your own capability.  You know how to build a message, craft it with precision, and hold the room under pressure. Karen's practical response to practitioners worried about starting over is that you are not starting from zero. Your portfolio still exists. Your experience and judgment still matter. The task is to reframe what you've already done through the lens of the new audience you want to reach, and to do the same with your LinkedIn, your bio, and your case studies, swapping out PR jargon for the new industry's language. [04:41] The Fastest Credential is One Flagship Project in the New Space: A single flagship project in your target industry outweighs years of history in your previous one. The question is how to get it without working for free. Karen's preferred path is a short-term embedded stint as a contractor with a PR practitioner or agency that already serves the industry you want to enter. You're not responsible for the whole strategy; you're not necessarily client-facing, but you're learning the landscape and building your portfolio at the same time, while getting paid. Karen's second preference is pitching a byline to a trade publication in the new industry. You don't need sector experience to have a point of view on communications and PR. That byline becomes proof of presence in the space. [06:29] Four Pathways to First Opportunities in a New Industry: Michelle and Karen walk through the four most practical routes. First: adjacent industry referrals. Look inside your existing network for one-degree-removed introductions. You are probably closer to your target industry than you think. Second: volunteer with a trade association in the industry. This builds knowledge, visible credibility, and relationships, and for APRs, volunteer hours count toward renewal. [11:14] Where the Money Is Flowing Right Now: Michelle names the sectors actively hiring communicators in 2026: AI, healthcare, energy, and climate. Traditional retail and some legacy media are not. Karen adds the nuance that even in sectors that are struggling overall — she cites tech specifically — there are portions of the sector where money still exists and is still being spent. The prescription: read financial publications, track where investment is flowing, follow the problems that are predicted and who is positioned to solve them. Broaden your view within sectors before assuming the whole sector is closed. [13:11] The Mistake Everyone Is Tempted to Make: Pivoting on Price Instead of Positioning: When you're new to a space and feel you need to prove yourself, the temptation is to undercut your rates. Karen is direct: do not do this. Clients who find you through price are not clients who value your judgment. What you can do instead is start with a smaller scope of work such as a three-month project, a productized offer, or a focused consultation. In this way, the engagement feels lower risk to the buyer without compromising your rate. Michelle's alternative: develop a sharp point of view on the industry's actual challenges, which signals that you belong there regardless of your history in the sector. Pivot on positioning, not on price. [15:51] Setting a Realistic Timeline and Not Getting Discouraged: Karen's honest assessment is that a realistic runway for breaking into a new industry is 3 to 6 months. In the current market, it could take a year or longer. The economy is moving in windows. There are periods where things open up, then something shifts, and clients pull back. Karen names this from personal experience, not theory. The practical implication is don't try to turn away from your current sector overnight. Work the new industry alongside what you're already doing, chip away consistently, and measure forward progress by inbound interest and repeat conversations rather than by contracts signed. [17:43] Speed It Up With In-Person Networking: Karen's tactical advice for shortening the timeline: if the target industry exists in your local area, find the in-person touchpoints. Local chamber of commerce, trade association meetings, industry mixers, and direct coffee requests to people inside companies you'd like to work with. Karen is careful to say don't use the phrase 'pick your brain' — instead, tell them honestly that you're interested in serving this industry and want to learn more about what they're facing. Follow up with a small, thoughtful thank-you. Face-to-face accelerates trust in a way that digital outreach does not. [19:58] The One Concrete Step to Take Today: Karen closes with a single, low-lift action: pick one adjacent connection in your existing network and ask for an introduction this week. Don't overthink it, don't plan the whole campaign first, don't wait until you've rewritten your website. Take one step. “We have deluded ourselves into thinking that we are as gods, and we are not.” — John West Back in 2006, at the height of Web 2.0 optimism, Time made YOU person of the year. The user-generated technology of the internet, Time implied, would make all of us into digital gods of memory and forgetting. Twenty years later, the script has been totally flipped. Now we know that the internet is all-too-human. And so are we. This reminder of our mortality is the heart (if that's the right word) of the new book by John West, the double Pulitzer Prize-winning Wall Street Journal computational journalist. West's The Internet Will Die, and So Will You is a kind of digital memento mori. His argument is metaphysical rather than political. Offline, he writes, our lives are marked by constraint. But we mistake the internet's destruction of physical distance for limitlessness. “We have deluded ourselves into thinking that we are as gods,” he reminds us, “and we are not.” A Christian and a digital deconvert (not an uncommon combination in the technocrati), West wants us to import our mortality online. If we recognize that the internet will decay and finally die, he suggests, we will make it human. (Re)Make it, as us. I've been making a version of this argument since The Cult of the Amateur in 2007. Only West's version — by contrasting Bach, Ecclesiastes, and Mary Oliver with the infinite scroll — is more poetic and musical. Politer too. Noli timere, as the poet Seamus Heaney texted before he died. Be not afraid. Of life, of death. But beware of YOU. Be afraid. Timere. Very afraid. Five Takeaways •       We Are Not Gods. The book's thesis: offline life is marked by constraint — you cannot talk to people farther than you can shout, or hug your child while she's at school — while online we act at a distance and mistake that “foot-loosening technology” for limitlessness. “We have deluded ourselves into thinking that we are as gods, and we are not” — the AI singularity being the theological version of the same delusion, and “a recipe for disaster, both interpersonally, but also within ourselves.” The fix is not logging off but bringing our mortality online: “this is where we live,” and the Internet's magic only stays magical when tempered by limits — “in order for it to be magical, we need the flip side, which is that it can't always be magic.” Andrew's frame: in 2006, Time made YOU person of the year, promising digital gods of memory and forgetting. Twenty years on, the internet is all-too-human — and so are we.•       The Deconvert's Meditation. “No one is more strident than the convert or the deconvert.” West's digital utopianism began in a middle-school computer lab, where an unhappy kid discovered he could find friends and communities online — and it died by monkey's paw: the same mechanism that found him anime fans now routes lonely kids into pro-anorexia TikTok rabbit holes (his own Journal colleagues' reporting) and neo-Nazi forums. “That supercharging is something that I wished for.” He concedes the lineage Andrew has worked since The Cult of the Amateur (2007) and The Internet Is Not the Answer (2015) — and goes further: “I actually think largely, Plato and Postman were right.” Culture must metabolize its technological ruptures. Or, per the Freudian slip Andrew gifted back to him for the next book: its raptures. Andrew's verdict on the lineage: the same argument, more poetic and musical. Politer too.•       A Few Thousand Weeks. On the Luddite summer, West channels past guest Brian Merchant: hatred of technology is usually hatred of lost control. The backlash against AI data centers is about being “completely removed from democratic control over that technology,” and the marketing — a magic box that will take your job — has backfired predictably. His arithmetic of dignity: we get only a few thousand weeks on this earth, and “our dignity demands that we have some say over what we do with our lives.” He cites Freddie deBoer's Copernican principle — everyone believes they live at history's hinge — then breaks it honestly: “but I also think this time, it might be right,” the elder millennial awestruck at the rupture he came of age inside.•       Religious, Not Spiritual. West inverts the modern chestnut: “everyone says they're spiritual and not religious these days. I actually think it's important to be religious, and spiritual can take it or leave it” — religion being “a powerful technology” for binding people into the civic fabric. His Christianity runs to liberation theology: not storing up treasure for the glorious day, but making this world more just now. Hence Bach cantatas, Ecclesiastes, and Mary Oliver as the book's unnamed philosophies — and hence his verdict on the billionaires who struggle with finitude: it doesn't shock him that men who earn millions while sleeping believe themselves gods, since “every dollar is like a little Iago whispering poison into the ears of the Silicon Valley elite.” The advantage belongs to us mere normals, unburdened by the whispering.•       Noli Timere. The Latin on West's X page — be not afraid — was Seamus Heaney's last text message, sent by SMS before the surgery he didn't survive, then carried by the Internet to thousands who found hope in it. That, West argues, is the network at its best: “it is about how you spend your time on the Internet, not what you can do on the Internet.” On memory, his formula is to remember “not more and not less, but rather differently” — choosing what we remember (the Odyssey's oral re-membering, retold body to body) rather than having it forced on us (the red solo cup photos, the traumas that refuse processing). The great mismatch of the web: “the things that we think should be permanent are often the things that are the most impermanent online, and the things that I really wish would fade away are the ones that refuse to.” Andrew's send-off inverts Heaney: be not afraid — of life, of death.
