El meridiano de Greenwich, una línea imaginaria que une los polos y pasa por el Real Observatorio de Greenwich en Londres, sirve como referencia para medir la longitud geográfica y establecer los husos horarios. Se fijó en 1884 durante la Conferencia Internacional del Meridiano. Se impuso a otros observatorios como el de París. El GMT (Greenwich Mean Time) fue el estándar internacional hasta su reemplazo por el UTC (Coordinated Universal Time), ya basado en relojes atómicos, aunque, eso sí, ambos están vinculados a este meridiano. La idea de fijar un meridiano principal data del siglo III a.C. cuando Eratóstenes de Cirene midió la circunferencia terrestre con una precisión notable. Observó las sombras que proyectaban los obeliscos en Asuán y en Alejandría en el mediodía del solsticio de verano y, tras hacer un experimento, demostró la esfericidad de la Tierra. Sobre ella trazó una cuadrícula imaginaria compuesta por paralelos y meridianos. La latitud es fácil de fijar. Se mide desde el Ecuador con líneas paralelas a distancias constantes. La longitud carece de una referencia natural y además los meridianos convergen en los polos por lo que se van estrechando. Eratóstenes fijó el primer meridiano y, a partir de él, cada cultura eligió su propio meridiano. Esto no importó demasiado hasta que comenzaron los viajes oceánicos de portugueses y españoles en el siglo XV. Pero calcular la longitud requería medir el tiempo de forma precisa, algo que no fue posible hasta bien entrado el siglo siglo XVIII. Fue un inglés llamado John Harrison quien resolvió el problema con un cronómetro marino de una precisión extraordinaria. La Revolución Industrial trajo nuevos ingenios como los barcos de vapor, los ferrocarriles y el telégrafo. Eso exigía una medida igual para todo el mundo. Y así es como delegados de 25 países se reunieron en Washington en 1884 para escoger el lugar de referencia para el meridiano cero. El elegido fue Greenwich por su observatorio, la tradición náutica británica y la pericia de sus cartógrafos. Francia se opuso y resistió hasta 1911. Durante esos años se referían al meridiano de Greenwich como "tiempo de París retrasado". Desde el meridiano cero se puede dividir la Tierra longitudinalmente con otras líneas imaginarias, las de los husos horarios. Pero ahí más que las matemáticas lo que ha terminado primando es la política. Cada país ha adaptado los husos a sus propias necesidades, de ahí que encontremos tantas anomalías, algunas realmente llamativas como el hecho de que un país tan extenso como China tenga el mismo horario, el de la capital, Pekín, que está en el extremo oriental del país. Algo similar sucede con la línea internacional de cambio de fecha, que oficialmente nunca se ha fijado. Discurre en torno al paralelo 180º en el centro del océano Pacífico, pero luego cada uno de los países de esa parte del mundo decide si prefiere estar en el hoy o en el mañana. El sistema de horarios y fechas tiene mucho de arbitrario, pero es funcional y ha conseguido que todos sepamos qué día y qué hora es en cualquier lugar del mundo. El Departamento de Justicia ha publicado en los últimos días dos lotes de documentos relacionados con las investigaciones federales sobre Jeffrey Epstein, el financiero condenado por delitos sexuales que se suicidó en prisión en 2019. Esta liberación de documentos confidenciales, en los que hay miles de páginas, fotografías y correos electrónicos, responden a una ley aprobada por el Congreso en noviembre de este año, que obliga al Departamento de Justicia a hacer públicos la mayoría de los registros no clasificados sobre Epstein y su cómplice Ghislaine Maxwell. El primer lote apareció el viernes pasado y consta de más de 13.000 archivos. El segundo se hizo público el martes con otro dossier de casi 30.000 páginas. En los archivos encontramos los indicios incautados por el FBI en las tres residencias de Epstein (Nueva York, Palm Beach y su isla privada en las Islas Vírgenes), registros de vuelos de su jet privado, entrevistas del FBI con víctimas, varias versiones de su testamento y materiales sobre sus últimos días en prisión. Entre los elementos destacados hay fotografías (muchas ya conocidas de procesos judiciales previos) que muestran a Epstein con figuras prominentes como Bill Clinton, un pasaporte austriaco falso caducado en 1987 y versiones del testamento donde nombra como posibles albaceas a personas como Larry Summers y Jes Staley. También figura una carta, que supuestamente Epstein envió desde la cárcel al delincuente sexual Larry Nassar, mencionando a Trump. Según el FBI esta carta es falsa. Los documentos contienen numerosas referencias a Donald Trump, especialmente recortes de prensa y registros de vuelos de los años 90. Un correo de un fiscal federal del año 2020 indica que Trump voló en el avión de Epstein al menos ocho veces entre 1993 y 1996, algunas con Maxwell y varias mujeres jóvenes. Estos viajes ya se conocieron durante el juicio de Maxwell hace cinco años. El Departamento de Justicia ha insistido en que algunas acusaciones contra Trump son infundadas, y el presidente ha negado que cometiese ilegalidad alguna. También ha recordado que que cortó la relación con Epstein antes de su primera detención en 2006.
