What is an eco-civilisation? What are its values and what are the frames within which it works? Why do we need it in the first place and what will the Establishment do to maintain business as usual? Most importantly, what can each of us do to live an eco-civilisation into being?This week's guest, Jeremy Lent, explores these ideas in depth in his forthcoming book, Ecocivlization: Making a World that Works, which is due out in May of 2026.  We've talked to Jeremy twice before, first in episode #38 about his award-winning book, The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity's Search for Meaning, and then in #102 about his second book in the series, The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe. Ecocivlisation is the third book in this trifecta and I was privileged to read the pre-proof draft, so I can tell you that it's one of the few genuinely Thrutopian books I've read. It that lays out the iniquities and downright horror of the imperial/colonial system of the Trauma culture - termed Wendigo Inc. in the book - and then brings Jeremy's trademark meticulous research and fluent prose to bear on the ways through to a system in which we all live and thrive and work towards the wellbeing of the entire ecosphere.   Given that there is such detail, I wanted to talk to Jeremy now, so that we could explore some of the foundations - the nature of the existing narratives of Business as Usual, of TINA: There is No Alternative  - and why this is so ubiquitous in spite of being self-evidently untrue.  Then I wanted to look at the broader frame of the Theory of Change proposed here so that next spring we can go into more detail ahead of the book's publication. For those of you who don't yet know him, Jeremy was born in London, has a BA in English Literature from Cambridge University, an MBA from the University of Chicago, and was a former internet company CEO. Now, he is an author, speaker and founder of the  Deep Transformation Network, a global community exploring pathways to an ecological civilization. Hace dos semanas, la oposición venezolana recibió una noticia alentadora: habían concedido a María Corina Machado el Premio Nobel de la Paz por su incansable lucha por recuperar la democracia en Venezuela tras más de 25 años de chavismo. El Comité Noruego reconoció no solo su liderazgo personal, sino también el esfuerzo de millones de ciudadanos que se movilizaron en torno a ella durante las elecciones presidenciales del año pasado. La oposición logró una victoria abrumadora, pero el régimen la robó de forma descarada. Eso al menos dejó claro al mundo que el fraude electoral es la norma en la Venezuela de Maduro. A pesar del simbolismo del Nobel, lo cierto es que las perspectivas de una transición pacífica siguen siendo inciertas. Machado mantiene vínculos muy estrechos con figuras como el secretario de Estado, Marco Rubio, pero la actitud de Donald Trump hasta ahora ha sido contradictoria. Durante sus primeros meses fue meramente transaccional hasta que en agosto anunció un gran despliegue naval en el Caribe compuesto por siete barcos de guerra, un submarino, helicópteros, drones y cazas F-35 que operan desde Puerto Rico. De camino se encuentra el portaaviones Gerald Ford, y el destructor Gravely se ha posicionado en la isla de Trinidad, a sólo a 10 kilómetros de las costas venezolanas. Oficialmente el despliegue es para controlar el narcotráfico, pero a nadie se le oculta su naturaleza política. Trump ha autorizado operaciones encubiertas de la CIA en Venezuela y, al ser interrogado sobre ataques directos, ha respondido con evasivas. Machado, por su parte, asegura en videos subidos a las redes sociales que el régimen “está acabado” y ha pedido de forma explícita ayuda a EEUU. A partir de aquí se dibujan tres posibles escenarios. El primero una rebelión interna: militares descontentos que agiten los cuarteles junto a manifestaciones multitudinarias que terminen derribando a Maduro. EEUU podría brindar apoyo logístico y de inteligencia. Pero este escenario es improbable. La represión postelectoral ha sido brutal. Machado está escondida. Edmundo González Urrutia y Leopoldo López viven en Madrid. El resto de la oposición está dividida. El ejército no es monolítico, pero sus altos oficiales son chavistas leales y los rangos intermedios se encuentran muy vigilados. El segundo escenario sería un ataque directo de EEUU que culmine con la captura de Maduro, algo similar a lo que sucedió con Noriega en Panamá allá por 1989. Pero Venezuela es muy grande, su geografía compleja y dispone de defensas aéreas. Neutralizarlas implicaría fuego directo, lo que podría derivar en una guerra prolongada que degenere en una guerra civil. El tercero, y más probable de los escenarios es que no ocurra nada. Maduro lo fía todo a que Trump se canse, declare una victoria contra el narcotráfico y opte por volver a la vía diplomática. Ahí podría recuperar su plan de 2020, el Marco de Transición Democrática que proponía una transición ordenada mediante elecciones libres a cambio de retirar las sanciones, pero no hubo voluntad por la parte chavista. Revivirlo requeriría acuerdos verificables con plazos medibles. El despliegue naval es útil como herramienta de presión para llegar hasta ese punto, pero lo cierto es que el régimen no está dispuesto a conceder nada. The inventor of the World Wide Web, Tim Berners-Lee, on the unique upbringing that inspired a tech revolution. Tim Berners-Lee has well and truly changed the world. For under-35s it's almost impossible to imagine what life might have been like without him. But when he launched the World Wide Web in December 1990, no-one knew the success it would become - and most struggled to understand why the world needed the Web at all. Tim, however, grew up steeped in the knowledge that computers held the key to the future. His parents worked on the Ferranti Mark 1 - the world's first commercial computer - and raised Tim on a diet of science demonstrations and electronic tinkering. His mother Mary Lee was the family's driving force, encouraging an eclectic mix of logical thinking, creative problem-solving, camping trips and a spirit of 'watchful negligence' - all of which gave the introverted young Tim the confidence to think outside the box and find solutions for himself. So when he went to work at CERN in Geneva in his late-20s and saw how computers struggled to talk to one another, he was perfectly placed to imagine and build what would become the World Wide Web.Tim's vision for the Web was built around positivity - where anyone with access to an internet connection could freely share ideas with anyone else. He knew that the key to its success was universality, so he made the decision to give the Web away for free. As a result, Tim Berners-Lee is not a billionaire. But he says that's just the way he likes it, making him free to go for walks and swims in the Serpentine in London without being recognised. It's not all been good news though. In the 35 years since its creation, the Web has been used as a base to build social media and AI empires that Tim says don't always act in our best interests. He fears the addictive effects of social media apps on children's mental health, and has decided to stop using Instagram as he was too often getting hooked on the feed. Tim says that his latest mission is to build a form of pro-human AI as an antidote to systems owned by Big Tech, and aims to help people reclaim control of their personal data so that the Web can, once again, belong to everyone. ¡Vótame en los Premios iVoox 2025! Javier Milei se alzó este domingo con una contundente victoria en las elecciones de medio mandato en Argentina, superando de paso las expectativas que preveían un empate o una ventaja mínima para su partido, La Libertad Avanza. Las encuestas auguraban un posible revés tras la derrota que sufrió en las elecciones provinciales de Buenos Aires en septiembre, donde Fuerza Patria (la coalición peronista) obtuvo el 47% frente al 33% de La Libertad Avanza. Este antecedente, sumado a la presión de Donald Trump, que condicionó la ayuda económica de EEUU a una victoria del partido de Milei, convirtió estas legislativas parciales en un plebiscito sobre las políticas del actual presidente. Si se trataba de un plebiscito lo ha ganado porque su partido ha obtenido el 40,6% de los votos frente al 33,6% de Fuerza Patria. El resultado más destacado fue la ajustada victoria en la provincia de Buenos Aires, el distrito electoral más poblado, donde Diego Santilli superó al peronista Jorge Taiana. Este desenlace, que no previeron los sondeos de intención de voto, debilita al peronismo, liderado en Buenos Aires por Axel Kicillof, que minimizó la derrota afirmando que "seis de cada diez argentinos rechazaron el modelo de Milei”. Lo que olvidó decir Kicillof es que sólo tres de cada diez han apoyado el suyo. La campaña de Milei se hizo con el lema “La libertad avanza o la Argentina retrocede” y adquirió desde el principio un tono plebiscitario, un tono que fue a más tras las declaraciones de Trump, que desde el mismo Air Force One afirmó que Argentina “lucha por su vida”. Estas palabras, aunque polémicas, movilizaron a votantes a favor de La Libertad Avanza. El triunfo asegura un rescate de 20.000 millones de dólares, inversiones en minería y energía, y fortalece la posición de Milei ante el FMI. La bolsa de Buenos Aires y las acciones argentinas en EEUU subieron tras los resultados, lo que demuestra la confianza de los inversores. En el Congreso la coalición oficialista pasará de 27 a 101 diputados y de 6 a 20 senadores, rompiendo con ello la hegemonía peronista en el Senado. Esto otorga a Milei un mayor control legislativo para mantener sus decretos y bloquear iniciativas opositoras, aunque, eso sí, queda lejos de la mayoría absoluta. Además, reestructurará su gabinete y podrá centrarse en su ambicioso programa de reformas. Milei, en el poder desde 2023, prometió un cambio radical con medidas como poner coto a la inflación, recortes de subsidios y despidos en el sector público. En parte ha cumplido. Ha conseguido el primer presupuesto equilibrado en una década y ha reducido la inflación del 200% al 32%. Pero la caída de los salarios reales y una crisis muy prolongada limitan el impacto de estas reformas. Aunque el triunfo refuerza su legitimidad, Milei debe equilibrar la disciplina fiscal con medidas para reactivar el crecimiento y recuperar el poder adquisitivo, un desafío de capital importancia si quiere mantener el apoyo popular de cara a las elecciones de 2027. Building a UI in Python usually means choosing between "quick and limited" or "powerful and painful." Michael #1: Cyclopts: A CLI library A CLI library that fixes 13 annoying issues in Typer Much of Cyclopts was inspired by the excellent Typer library. Despite its popularity, Typer has some traits that I (and others) find less than ideal. Part of this stems from Typer's age, with its first release in late 2019, soon after Python 3.8's release. Because of this, most of its API was initially designed around assigning proxy default values to function parameters. This made the decorated command functions difficult to use outside of Typer. With the introduction of Annotated in python3.9, type-hints were able to be directly annotated, allowing for the removal of these proxy defaults. This release was particularly interesting to me because of the improvements on the "free-threaded" variant of the interpreter. Specifically, the two major changes when compared to the free-threaded variant of Python 3.13 are: Free-threaded support now reached phase II, meaning it's no longer considered experimental The implementation is now completed, meaning that the workarounds introduced in Python 3.13 to make code sound without the GIL are now gone, and the free-threaded implementation now uses the adaptive interpreter as the GIL enabled variant. These facts, plus additional optimizations make the performance penalty now way better, moving from a 35% penalty to a 5-10% difference.” Lots of benchmark data, both ASGI and WSGI Lots of great thoughts in the “Final Thoughts” section, including “On asynchronous protocols like ASGI, despite the fact the concurrency model doesn't change that much – we shift from one event loop per process, to one event loop per thread – just the fact we no longer need to scale memory allocations just to use more CPU is a massive improvement. ” “… for everybody out there coding a web application in Python: simplifying the concurrency paradigms and the deployment process of such applications is a good thing.” “… to me the future of Python web services looks GIL-free.” Michael #3: Free-threaded GC The free-threaded build of Python uses a different garbage collector implementation than the default GIL-enabled build. The Default GC: In the standard CPython build, every object that supports garbage collection (like lists or dictionaries) is part of a per-interpreter, doubly-linked list. The list pointers are contained in a PyGC_Head structure. The Free-Threaded GC: Takes a different approach. It scraps the PyGC_Head structure and the linked list entirely. Instead, it allocates these objects from a special memory heap managed by the "mimalloc" library. This allows the GC to find and iterate over all collectible objects using mimalloc's data structures, without needing to link them together manually. The free-threaded GC does NOT support "generations” By marking all objects reachable from these known roots, we can identify a large set of objects that are definitely alive and exclude them from the more expensive cycle-finding part of the GC process. Overall speedup of the free-threaded GC collection is between 2 and 12 times faster than the 3.13 version. Brian #4: Polite lazy imports for Python package maintainers Will McGugan commented on a LI post by Bob Belderbos regarding lazy importing “I'm excited about this PEP. I wrote a lazy loading mechanism for Textual's widgets. Without it, the entire widget library would be imported even if you needed just one widget. Having this as a core language feature would make me very happy.” https://github.com/Textualize/textual/blob/main/src/textual/widgets/__init__.py Well, I was excited about Will's example for how to, essentially, allow users of your package to import only the part they need, when they need it. So I wrote up my thoughts and an explainer for how this works. Giorgia Meloni acaba de cumplir tres años en el cargo, un hito notable en un país como Italia, caracterizado desde hace décadas por la inestabilidad política y los gobiernos efímeros. Desde el final de la segunda guerra mundial sólo Silvio Berlusconi ha conseguido superar los tres años en el Palazzo Chigi. Si Meloni se mantiene otros diez meses más le igualará. Es muy posible que así sea porque goza de una posición sólida, su popularidad está por encima del 40%, un porcentaje de aprobación mucho más elevado que el de Emmanuel Macron, Keir Starmer o Pedro Sánchez. Italia, antes un dolor de cabeza para Bruselas por sus vaivenes políticos y económicos, es ahora todo un modelo a seguir. En estos tres años Meloni ha reducido el déficit público a la mitad, los rendimientos de los bonos a 10 años han bajado hasta situarse a la par de los de Francia, y el desempleo ha pasado del 8% al 6%, lo que está animando la recaudación fiscal. En septiembre la agencia Fitch mejoró la calificación crediticia del país precisamente por eso, porque el cuadro macroeconómico pinta mejor que el de otros países europeos. Sólo la monstruosa deuda pública, del 137% sobre PIB, ensombrece el panorama. Meloni se las ha apañado para transformar en muy poco tiempo la imagen internacional de Italia, especialmente si lo comparamos con el caos político en el que se han sumido sus vecinos franceses, que coleccionan primeros ministros, protestas callejeras y mociones de censura en el parlamento. La coalición de Meloni, que ganó en 2022 con el 44% de los votos, mantiene su ventaja en las encuestas. Esto es así porque ha sabido equilibrar su base electoral más dura con cierto pragmatismo que tranquiliza a los moderados y a Bruselas. Aunque en el pasado, cuando estaba en la oposición, criticaba sin piedad a la Unión Europea, ahora prioriza el control del déficit y ha desarrollado una relación muy constructiva con Ursula von der Leyen. En el interior da satisfacción a sus votantes con medidas típicamente conservadoras como los límites que ha impuesto al aborto pero sin derogar la ley de 1978, ha convertido en delito la gestación subrogada y ha endurecido las penas contra quienes atenten contra la policía. Su política migratoria no es tan agresiva como se esperaba, pero ha reducido las llegadas gracias a un acuerdo con Túnez, que la Unión Europea ha firmado en su nombre. Eso sí, su plan de procesar las solicitudes de asilo en Albania no ha terminado de salir. Sus críticas al Pacto Verde de la UE han encontrado eco en otras partes de Europa, especialmente en Alemania, donde el canciller Friedrich Merz se ha convertido en su aliado. Su éxito es innegable, pero tiene por delante algunos escollos como el problema del raquítico crecimiento económico de Italia. La economía no se ha recuperado del todo del impacto de la pandemia y la inflación que le siguió. Sus aliados de la Liga le buscan algunos problemas en el extranjero, pero ha conseguido domar a Matteo Salvini y ponerle esencialmente a su servicio. Por suerte para ella la oposición de izquierda está dividida y desconectada de las preocupaciones del italiano medio. Su sentido práctico quizá no apasione a la mayoría, pero si parece convencerles. Es quizá la opción menos mala posible y eso mismo es lo que hace que se mantenga en el poder. El podcast de hoy va sobre identificar pensamientos o ideas que nos impiden compartir. Piensa en esa vocecita que te dice "No quiero que crean que me las sé todas". Sentís que si compartís algo útil, te van a juzgar, dirán que sos soberbio o agrandado.Pero, ¿y si esa persona necesitaba escuchar justo lo que tenías para decir? Tu experiencia, incluso tus errores, podrían ahorrarle a alguien un mal momento. Les cuento una experiencia reciente, alguien me preguntaba cómo saber cuándo meterse o no en una conversación. ¿Cuándo dar tu opinión, sobre todo si podés ayudar?Creo que es cómo decimos las cosas, cómo nos perciben los demás. Quizás somos todo lo contrario, personas que hablamos continuamente y no nos guardamos nada. Ahí es donde se cierran las oportunidades. No es tanto qué decimos, sino cómo y quién lo dice. Hay que saber escucharnos, desde dónde hablamos. ¿Cuál es nuestro para qué, nuestro propósito? ¿Qué objetivo tenemos al hablar? El foco debe estar en la persona.Otro pensamiento limitante es: "A mí nadie me dijo nada, ¿por qué debería yo?" Puede responder a heridas abiertas, envidia, celos, inseguridades u orgullo. Si sentís que nadie te ha dado una mano, ¿por qué no cortar ese ciclo y ser vos el primero en compartir, ayudar y dar?Otra idea: "Si comparto, pierdo ventaja. Me van a ganar o superar". Ese miedo es común. A veces está bien ayudar, pero solo si la persona está lejos, no compite con vos. Pero como dice Maxwell, cuando ayudás a otros a servir, también crecés. Crecemos compartiendo.Compartir multiplica, no resta. Les dejo 3 ideas para entusiasmarse a compartir más:1. Cuando compartimos, nos ordenamos. A mí me pasa, tengo una idea, pero al intentar comunicarla, me ordeno. Compartir ayuda a ordenar y capitalizar nuestras ideas, incluso para nosotros mismos. Es una forma de crecer.2. Compartir conecta, construye puentes y nos acerca a la gente. Importa cómo compartimos, de manera genuina y sincera. Hablando con Dotti, reflexionábamos sobre la transparencia y congruencia. Compartir algo requiere tener una buena razón para hacerlo.3. Multiplicar tu impacto compartiendo. Quizás para vos es una pavada lo que decís. Plantealo así: "Quizás es insignificante, pero esto me pasó...". A lo mejor es una frase, un refrán o un versículo que te inspiró. "No sé si significa algo para vos, pero esto es lo que estoy escuchando". Quizás eso le ayude a alguien a hacer un click.John Maxwell dice que vamos por la vida sembrando semillas.
