The most unusual thing about today's story is that almost everyone is going to bruise their lungs. For your sake, I hope it's from laughing. Not everyone will be so lucky. On today's episode: you'll hear about the one part of your body I want you to consider more worthy of fiddling with than your genitals; if you're a stickler for building codes, we're going to take you on a beautiful, potentially one-way hike to see some shoddy-ass worksmanship; and we'll see what makes helicopter rescues as frightening as whatever you did to earn one in the first place. And if you were listening on Patreon… I would use tales of sharks and octopuses and meth and sex toys to try and make today's location more appealing; you would meet the surviving inductees to the No-Parachute Hall of Fame; and you would find out how the greatest construction disaster in US history inspired my idea for an OSHA Violation Ouija Board Game.In this episode, so you know, I was going to start by saying we have a story you're going to fall head over heels for, but that felt like the most unintentionally disrespectful thing I've ever said. I'm also going to teach you the reassuring paleontological roots of why you laugh at this show. It is my unique pleasure to be able to take us all back to Oceana on today's episode. I make a point about how little attention is paid to this part of the world outside of South East Asia. Actually, I make a few points about it, as I've done in the past as well. This is, sadly, one of those episodes were young people will die terribly, and frighteningly, but it's also one of those stories that offers two things. First, a silver lining and legacy of change and safety, sure – but second, a chance to really get your torches and knives out for a government that dropped a ball and then walked behind it kicking it the whole way. I know a lot of listeners get a kind of malicious satisfaction or bureaucraschadenfreude when people in positions of responsibility for our stories get their heads removed. You'll just have to wait and see. And because we're now into October and the Halloween Season, I will be creating a masterpiece of horror and gore for our next episode. This is one I originally started writing all the way back in 2016 (yes, it took four years to get this show rolling). I shelved it though. Too violent. Too many limbs. Well, five years in, you've all proven how hard it is to scare you off, so from the annals of history comes our most frightening episode ever. Maybe. It's relative I suppose. AI therapists and caregivers. Digital tutors and advisors and friends. Artificial lovers. Griefbots trained to imitate dead loved ones. Welcome, to the bustling world of AI-powered chatbots. This was once the stuff of science fiction, but it's becoming just the stuff of everyday life. What will these systems do to our society, to our relationships, to our social skills and motivations? Are these bots destined to leave us hollowed out, socially stunted, screen-addicted, and wary of good-old-fashioned, in-the-flesh human interaction? Or could they actually be harnessed for good? My guest today is Dr. Henry Shevlin. Henry is a philosopher and AI ethicist at the Leverhulme Centre for the Future of Intelligence (CFI) at Cambridge University. In a series of recent papers, Henry has been exploring this brave new world of "social AI" and its philosophical, ethical, and psychological dimensions. Here, Henry and I sketch the current landscape of social AI—from dedicated platforms like Replika and CharacterAI to the more subtly social uses of ChatGPT and Claude. We consider several tragic cases that have recently rocketed these kinds of services into public awareness. We talk about what's changed about AI systems—quite recently—that's now made them capable of sustained relationships. We linger on the possible risks of social AI and, perhaps less obviously, on the possible benefits. And we consider the prospects for regulation. Along the way, Henry and I also talk about his 81-year-old father, his teenage self, and, of course, the kids these days; we consider whether social AI, in its potential harms, is more like social media or more like violent video games; we talk about "deskilling" and it's opposite "upskilling"; and we of course take stock of a certain elephant in the room. Alright friends, this is a fun one. We've been wanting to explore this dawning age of social AI for some time. And we finally found, in Henry, the right person to do it with. Enjoy! Only about 4% of retirees actually wait until age 70 to claim Social Security, despite the financial benefits of delaying them. This comes from an article by Derek Tharp at Kitces.com titled “The Flaws In Using A 0% Discount Rate To Justify Delaying Social Security”. It takes a hard look at why the common advice to “wait until 70” might not always hold up in the real world. Tharp argues that the assumptions baked into much of the research—especially the idea that a future Social Security dollar is worth the same as a dollar today—can tilt the math toward delay, while ignoring very real risks like mortality, sequence of returns, policy changes, and even health-span. I'll share the points and give my commentary on the topic. Thanks for hitting the Play button! Then in our listener question segment: We'll talk about whether it ever makes sense to use a SPIA to bridge the gap until Social Security. What are the pros and cons, and would I ever recommend one? What is called a podcast has sparked more debate in our community than mic choices or interview styles. There's a lot of confusion, and even controversy, around this seemingly simple question. And if you've been in the podcasting game for any amount of time, you've likely heard a dozen different definitions. According to WhatsAPodcast.com: podcast (noun) Episodic multimedia content that is downloadable via RSS (“really simple syndication”). A podcast can be audio or video. Yes, this is technically correct. But let's be real. That doesn't really explain what a podcast is in the way that matters to us as creators. A Podcast Is a Distribution Method, Not Just a “Show” At its core, a podcast is a show distributed via podcasting technology. Namely, RSS feeds. That's it. The magic isn't in the audio file or video format, It's in how it gets to your audience. A podcast isn't just a genre of content, it's a method of delivery. That's a crucial distinction we, as creators, need to understand… Even if our audiences don't. Listeners (or viewers, if it's video) might never think twice about RSS. But we should. RSS is the backbone of podcasting. It allows for decentralized distribution, meaning no single company owns or controls where or how your content is accessed. That's not a bug, it's a feature. Why YouTube Isn't a Podcast (And That's Okay) There's a common argument: “If I post my show on YouTube, that's a podcast, right?” Well… Not quite. A video uploaded to YouTube is a video. You might also be running a podcast that features the same content, but unless it's distributed via RSS, it's not technically a podcast. It's just another method of media distribution. And, There is NOTHING WRONG WITH THAT. There are many ways to distribute a show: TV or radio broadcast YouTube or other video platforms Embedded audio on a website Live streaming Podcasting via RSS The important thing is understanding what makes something a podcast: RSS-powered syndication that lets people subscribe (or follow) and receive new episodes automatically, in their preferred app, without being tied to any one platform. Why This Matters to Independent Creators You might ask, “Who cares if my content is called a podcast or not?” Well, as an independent creator, you should care… at least a little. RSS keeps podcasting open and democratic. It's what allows your show to appear on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts, Overcast, and hundreds of other directories, all without being locked into a single ecosystem. When your content lives only on one platform, you're at the mercy of that platform's algorithm, terms of service, and monetization policies. With podcasting, you own your feed. That's powerful. Use Podcasting as One Tool in Your Creator Toolkit Here's the good news: You don't have to choose just one path. You can distribute your content however you like. Record your live radio show? Great turn that into a podcast. Record a video for YouTube? Strip the audio and publish it as a podcast. Do a podcast? Add video and stream it live. Repurpose your content across channels. Just understand the distinctions. Podcasting is just one way to reach your audience. But it's a way that gives you freedom, control, and ownership. And that's why it's worth preserving the true meaning of what a podcast is. A podcast isn't defined by whether it's audio or video, entertaining, educational or just plain stupid. It's defined by how it's distributed. Via RSS. Understanding that gives you more power as a content creator, not less. Keep creating. Keep sharing. And most importantly, keep owning your feed. HAPPY PODCASTING!

Pastor Chad digs deep into Romans 3 and reminds us of the weight of sin and the beauty of the gospel. ✨ Paul shows us that we all fall short—none of us are righteous on our own. Sin isn't just something we stumble into; it's what we naturally choose. But the good news is that God, in His justice, doesn't leave us there.

Summary: Consumers rejected genetically modified crops, and I expect they will do the same for cultivated meat. The meat lobby will fight to discredit the new technology, and as consumers are already primed to believe it's unnatural, it won't be difficult to persuade them. When I hear people talk about cultivated meat (i.e. lab-grown meat) and how it will replace traditional animal agriculture, I find it depressingly reminiscent of the techno-optimists of the 1980s and ‘90s speculating about how genetic modification will solve all our food problems. The optimism of the time was understandable: in 1994 the first GMO product was introduced to supermarkets, and the benefits of the technology promised incredible rewards. GMOs were predicted to bring about the end of world hunger, all while requiring less water, pesticides, and land.Today, thirty years later, in the EU GM foods are so regulated that they are [...] ---Outline:(01:56) Why did GMOs fail to be widely adopted?(02:44) A Bad First Impression(05:54) Unpopular Corporate Concentration(07:22) Cultivated Meat IS GMO(08:45) What timeline are we in?(10:24) What can be done to prevent cultivated meat from becoming irrelevant?(10:30) Expect incredible opposition(11:46) Be ready to tell a clear story about the benefits.(13:17) A proactive PR Effort(15:01) First impressions matter(17:16) Labeling(19:35) Be ready to discuss concerns about unnaturalness(21:56) Limitations of the comparison(23:07) Conclusion--- First published: September 22nd, 2025 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/rMQA9w7ZM7ioZpaN6/cultivated-meat-a-wakeup-call-for-optimists --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. Our retirement headline is from a ThinkAdvisor article titled "Ed Slott: Roth Conversions Are Trickier Under New Tax Law" by Melanie Waddell. “With the extended tax cuts under President Trump's recently passed tax and spending law, ‘Roth conversions should be accelerated to take advantage of more years of low tax rates,' according to Ed Slott of Ed Slott & Co. ‘You never want to leave a low tax bracket unfilled,' he said. ‘Low tax brackets need to be maximized each year, but how much to convert each year can be trickier now since many of the new tax breaks have income caps.'” That's the crux of it — Roth conversions still make sense, but now they're bumping up against some new income cliffs. I take the first few minutes to share a few key numbers. Then our listener question is actually one I asked myself after seeing a post about company financials being reported less frequently than quarterly. I go through the pros and cons of making this change. Our Breaking Bad/Better Call Saul group chat discussion concludes with a focus on who was the truly big bad of all time on that TV saga. Is Gus the only actual criminal with a code of honor? Is Saul Goodman better at vanishing than D.B. Cooper? Who doesn't want to kill Todd the minute you see him? Does Laura Fraser's Lydia character steal every season that she's on? How well do they characterize the various henchmen? All that and why you should unfriend anyone who finds Walter White relatable! We've done episodes where people lose their teeth. We've done episodes where have them melted out of their heads, or frisbeed out by debris, or punched out by bulls, or even blown out of their heads by lightning. But we've never done an episode where the most horrifying thing that happens is you maybe get something stuck in them.On this episode: we'll take off on one of the least enviable flights in history – which is saying a lot; we'll learn just what staggeringly awful places hunger can take an underfed mind even when the only menu option is freeze-dried human buttock; and we'll end up with one of the most excruciating and difficult mountain hikes ever conducted, wearing little more than a tennis outfit. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would see which popular sport tops the list for most spinal and testicular injuries; you'd hear every mouth-watering detail of the most filling and calorically-dense item on any menu, anywhere in the world; and you would learn how the survivor of a lifeboat full of man-on-man nom nom inspired one of the greatest pieces of American literature ever scribed. This episode was created as a thank you for a special listener who asked to remain nameless and over extended themselves to help me out of a jam. Technically, all my episodes are thank you episodes for the people who help support the show, and a gift to every casual listener who's ever had to treat a goring wound, or a flaming oil burn, or patch a cartoonish hole burnt through them by volcanic projectiles.I make a point in this episode that one of the last times we visited South America together, we got irradiated, and how difficult it is to replace an entire audience after you accidentally murder the last one. It's my way of saying thank you for listening, and for today's special listener – 50-60 hours of painstaking work is maybe the best way I know how to say thank you and show the depth of my appreciation.I've heard people describe this tale as extraordinary, but that's not nearly a good enough word to explain what happened. You have any idea how deep you have to dig to refuse to surrender in spite of all this and having the whole world seemingly abandoned you? And even more than that, can you understand how profound the details of your story have to be to completely overshadow make people forget about all the cannibalism? Birds do the darnedest things. They fly, of course. They sing. They hunt in pitch darkness. They hide their food and remember where they put it. They use tools and migrate over astonishingly vast distances—sometimes even sleeping while in flight. How do they do all this? What's going on in their brains that makes these and other remarkable behaviors possible? How did their evolutionary path mold them into the incredible creatures they are today? My guests today are Dr. Andrew Iwaniuk and Dr. Georg Striedter. Andrew is a comparative neuroscientist and Associate Professor at the University of Lethbridge in Canada. Georg is a Professor of Neurobiology and Behavior at the University of California, Irvine. Together they are the authors of the new book, Bird Brains and Behavior: A Synthesis (available open access here). Here, Georg, Andrew, and I consider the deep history of birds—how they skirted the mass extinction event that felled the dinosaurs, and then radiated out into the 11,000 plus species we know today. We talk about how bird brains differ from those of mammals and reptiles—in terms of their size, but also in terms of their major structures, and in terms of their wrinkliness. We tour some of the most peculiar and perplexing bird behaviors, and consider their neural and anatomical underpinnings. Finally, we consider what we can learn from bird brains, not just about birds but about brains in general—how they evolve, how they get wired up, how they do and do not vary. Along the way we touch on barn owls, hummingbirds, megapodes, mallards, pigeons, parrots, starlings, and underestimated waterfowl; we touch on how birds' brains change with the seasons; the enduring mystery of magnetoreception; the possibility of olfactory maps; the optocollic reflex; the social intelligence hypothesis and the extractive foraging hypothesis; precocial versus altricial bird species; split-body gynandromorphy; and the future of non-invasive work in bird neuroscience. Season 7 of Many Minds is now gathering steam. We've got some great episodes in the works for you. Just a little reminder that we'd be grateful—thrilled, even—if you could help us get the word out about our show. You might do this by leaving a rating or a review, or by telling a colleague about us. We really appreciate the support, friends! Without further ado, here's my conversation with Dr. Georg Striedter and Dr. Andrew Iwaniuk. Enjoy! US President Donald Trump has railed against his country's trade deficit with China. But as Chinese surpluses continue to flow into other countries, it's worth asking how China got to where it is today, and whether Chinese growth can lift all boats. Should I collect Social Security early & invest the proceeds into the stock market? This is the age-old question I see on a nearly daily basis in retirement forums. An article from Morningstar - written by Christine Benz and features a conversation with Social Security expert Mary Beth Franklin - gives me the basis for sharing six obstacles for claiming instead of waiting. Also, we share a listener question about whether retirees should stick with the traditional 60/40 stock-and-bond portfolio or branch out into alternatives like gold, REITs, or managed futures to help with risk management and withdrawal rate.
