Retirees obsess over the exact safe withdrawal rate they think they'll need while simultaneously building layer after layer of backup plans. Dividends, buckets, multiple years of cash, constant Monte Carlo recalculations are all done in the name of safety. Jordan Grumet's argument to this problem is simple and provocative: If you believe in the safe withdrawal rate, then act like it. Stop stacking contingencies on top of contingencies and chasing 100% certainty in a world where it doesn't exist. We go over Jordan's article "Stop Chickening Out" in our headline segment. Then we answer Robert's question: "What if you just use the Traditional IRA for living expenses instead? If both approaches reduce the IRA balance and lower future RMDs, is Roth conversion strategy overhyped?" And we wrap up the show with a story from one of our happiest retired listeners in our newest listener-sourced segment "Retire to Something". https://daredaniel.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/SINGLETAKE_S01_E05_Scream7Dreams.mp3 Single Take with Daniel Barnes Episode 5 Perennially disgraced film critic Daniel Barnes returns with another episode of his white-hot Single Take podcast. A born entertainer known for his incredibly affable personality, Daniel boasts numerous stage and screen credits. But he’s perhaps best known for creating “Carpool Karaoke”, a delightful series of sketches in which…oh, you know what? I was thinking of James Corden. Daniel Barnes is just some guy who reviews movies. This week, Daniel takes a Munch out of Scream 7, the latest entry in the still-somehow-straggling-along horror franchise. Daniel also offers his Single Take on Oscar winner Jessica Chastain in the erotic drama Dreams. Listen as Daniel discusses Sha Na Na slasher flicks, forced nostalgia death marches and dreams he’s like to forget. Scream 7 (2026; Dir.: Kevin Williamson) DANIEL’S RATING: DUMP *Now playing everywhere. IMDB Synopsis: “When a new Ghostface killer emerges in the town where Sidney Prescott has built a new life, her darkest fears are realized as her daughter becomes the next target.” Dreams (2026; Dir.: Michel Franco) DANIEL’S RATING: DUMP *Now playing in the San Francisco Bay Area. Opening Friday, March 6, at the Tower Theatre in Sacramento. IMDB Synopsis: “A powerful American socialite (Jessica Chastain) and an undocumented Mexican ballet dancer begin a dangerous affair in this tense, erotic drama.” Read more of Daniel's reviews at Dare Daniel and Rotten Tomatoes, and listen to Daniel on the Dare Daniel & Canon Fodder podcasts. After the Wii, but before the Switch, Nintendo released the Wii U. Not just a touchpad controller for the Wii, but a console with its own library and its own identity. However poor sales, and the fact that many of its titles have been ported to Switch, leave the Wii U in the dust of obscurity. Matt & Gen are joined by Jacob McCourt for a console retrospective on Nintendo's lowest selling non-portable gaming system. The Gamepad provided unique and fun game experiences. Many fantastic series got their start here, or have a unique entry that lives exclusively on the Wii U. Lowest selling console, perhaps, but not least loved. Some believe a deeper pool of common debt would allow the European Union to tackle some of its biggest problems, attracting more investment, reducing the cost of financing, and helping the EU achieve greater strategic autonomy. One such believer: Carlos Cuerpo, Spain's economy, trade and business minister. How do you handle entitled thoughts when they appear? In Mark 9, we see an example of how Jesus shows how to deal with entitled thoughts. Jesus identifies the thought, informs the thought, then impacts the thought. We may not always think of entitled thoughts as something we wrestle with, but they are important to address when renewing our minds. Entitled thinking can look like thoughts of, “I deserve better than what I'm getting.” These kind of thoughts will drift you further from Jesus more than any other kind of thoughts, and can be dangerous when we are blind to seeing it in ourselves. Jesus said in Mark 9, “If anyone desires to be first, he will be last.” Remember ✍️ 1: You cannot access greatness without its Author. 2: Combat entitled thinking by caring for the parts of the world in need. Stay tuned for a brand new series next week!
Nuclear fuel is nothing like the coal or gas it replaces. Where fossil fuels are destroyed in combustion, nuclear fuel must survive years of continuous fission inside a reactor and come out the other end looking almost exactly as it went in. In this episode, fuel engineer Michael Seely breaks down how uranium dioxide pellets are made, why the fuel rod is one of the most sophisticated manufactured objects in the world, and how an industry that once ran more than half its fleet on leaking fuel pins methodically engineered its way to near-zero failure rates by 2010.We also get into enrichment economics, the bespoke nature of reactor fuel design, the post-Fukushima push toward accident-tolerant and higher-burnup LEU Plus fuel, and why high-assay low-enriched uranium (HALEU), the feedstock required by most advanced reactor concepts, requires 40 kilograms of natural uranium and six times the separative work of conventional fuel just to produce a single kilogram. If you want to understand why nuclear plants are built the way they are, why the water cooled reactor won, and what the fuel supply chain challenge really means for the advanced reactor industry, this is the episode to start with.Listen to Decouple on:• Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6PNr3ml8nEQotWWavE9kQz• Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/decouple/id1516526694?uo=4• Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1516526694/decouple• Pocket Casts: https://pca.st/ehbfrn44• RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/23775178/podcast/rssWebsite: https://www.decouple.media
If you wanted a petri dish for understanding metaphors—how they emerge and evolve and jostle with each other—it would be hard to do better than the world of AI. We talk about AI systems variously as coaches or co-pilots, little genies or alien intelligences. Some researchers claim that AIs "grow," that they're entering their phase of "adolescence." Critics deride AI products as slop and dismiss LLMs as a kind of autocomplete on steroids. What's behind these different characterizations? Which ones are accurate and which are unfair? And are our metaphors mostly colorful rhetoric or do they matter? Are they shaping how we understand, adopt, and ultimately regulate these new technologies? My guest today is Dr. Melanie Mitchell. Melanie is a computer scientist and Professor at the Santa Fe Institute. She is the author of the book, AI: A Guide for Thinking Humans, and she writes a Substack by the same name. This episode is a bit of companion to our recent episode with Steve Flusberg. In that episode, Steve and I attempted a kind of crash course on metaphor and the human mind. Here, Melanie and I sit down for more of an extended case study: how metaphors are guiding, galvanizing, and maybe deceiving us in the contested realm of AI discourse. We unpack seven of the most widely used metaphors in this space. We consider how these metaphors are shaping not only our everyday understandings of AI, but also law and policy. We also talk about the metaphor and analogy capabilities of AI itself. Can these system reason abstractly in the way that humans can? Along the way, Melanie and I touch on: AI-generated poetry, anthropomorphism, the original sin of AI research, the myth of Narcissus, psychometric testing and its pitfalls, metaphors for AI that are a bit hard to spot, and the question of whether an AI has ever come up with a decent analogy for itself. Longtime fans of the show will know that we've had Melanie on the show once before. We invited her back, not only because she's thought about metaphor and analogy in AI discourse for decades, but because she's a voice of calm insight in an area that's increasingly awash in hype and polemic. Longtime fans of the show may also note that we are now celebrating our 6th birthday at Many Minds. That's right, the show launched in February 2020. If you'd like to support us as we recognize this milestone, you can leave us a rating or a review, recommend us to a friend, or give us a shout out on social media. Slowly but surely – and just in time for the State of the Union – the full picture of the Trump Administration's Most-Favoured Nations drug pricing policy is coming into focus. At the end of last year, CMS published the draft guidance for its GLOBE and GUARD pricing models, which establish MFN pricing in Medicare Part B and Part D, respectively. And earlier this month TrumpRx – the government's promised patient-facing discount portal – finally went live. On today's podcast, Jonah Comstock is joined by Alice Valder Curran, a partner at Hogan Lovells and a healthcare policy expert, to break down what we know and what we still don't know about each of these developments. Among other things, Valder Curran breaks down how the two CMS pilot programmes will work, what statutory authority CMS is leaning on (and whether that authority is likely to be challenged), and how the industry is responding. Comstock and Valder Curran also discuss TrumpRx and how impactful it's shaping up to be, at least based on what's been revealed so far. And how do those negotiated MFN deals fit in to all this? We can't give you the answers to all your questions about MFN – too much is still up in the air. But this podcast will at least give you an idea of what those open questions are and how they're likely to play out. Sheryl Rowling from Morningstar argues that the greatest danger in retirement isn't the stock market — it's the constant fear of running out of money. We will walk through her eight "anchors" from the article posted on Morningstar. Anchor 1: Confirm Your Sustainable Spending Level Anchor 2: Embrace Flexibility in Down Markets Anchor 3: Recognize That Spending Often Declines With Age Anchor 4: Create a Recession Buffer Anchor 5: Reduce Future Tax Uncertainty Anchor 6: Maximize Guaranteed Income Anchor 7: Protect Against Long-Term Care Costs Anchor 8: View Home Equity as a Backstop For our listener question: I've said before that accumulation is the easy part - and distribution is harder. But Kevin wrote in to say "wait a second… don't prices move around when you're buying or selling? So what's the real difference?" We're going to unpack why dollar-cost averaging on the way in is not the same thing as sequence risk on the way out — and why that distinction matters once you're living off the portfolio. And to wrap up the show, we'll hear from Bernie about how he is blending service & fun for an even better retirement. Shortly after the US Supreme Court ruled Donald Trump's tariffs were illegal, he hit back. The president vowed to impose a 10% levy on US imports through different means. He raised those duties to 15% the following day. These tariffs – imposed under the Trade Act of 1974, rather than the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) – are only temporary. But Trump has a range of tariff tools at his disposal. How will he use them? Which of his trading partners will be worse off from these new policy changes? And will US companies that have already paid tariffs get their money back? To discuss all this and more, Soumaya is joined by former US trade representative, and president of the Council on Foreign Relations, Michael Froman.Subscribe to The Economics Show on Apple, Spotify, Pocket Casts or wherever you listen. In this third collaboration between SIDP's Breakpoints and ESCMID's Communicable podcasts, hosts Erin McCreary and Angela Huttner invite two veteran authors of guidelines and guidances, Pranita Tamma (Philadelphia, USA) and Benedikt Huttner (WHO, Geneva, Switzerland) [1-3]. Together, they deconstruct the complex landscape of developing and implementing guidelines into digestible components: they discuss why different organizations develop guidelines and what need they hope to fulfil, the framework including the GRADE methodology under which guidelines are written, and major barriers in the uptake of guidelines. The conversation also details the distinction between guideline and guidance as well as the art and science behind formulating recommendations or suggestions, with a few anecdotal cases sprinkled in from the panel. When Richard Thaler and Cass Sunstein released their book ‘Nudge' in 2008, it caught the public imagination. ‘Nudge theory' – the idea that people could be encouraged to make better choices through small, subtle interventions – was innovative, and exciting. A decade and a half later, a whole lot of nudging seems to have come to a whole lot of nothing. Why wasn't ‘nudge theory' more help in tackling climate change, or helping people enroll in pensions? And, even if it hasn't saved the world, does behavioural science still have a role in policymaking? Former member of the UK's Behavioural Insights Team and professor of behavioural science, Nick Chater, reflects on the legacy of nudges.Related LinksCan we ‘nudge' our way to higher growth? The uses — and the limits — of ‘nudge' economicsWhat nudge theory got wrongSubscribe to Soumaya's show on Apple, Spotify, Pocket Casts or wherever you listen.Read a transcript of this episode on FT.com Hosted on Acast. Dragonfly raises a $650M Fund IV amid crypto's institutional vs retail sentiment gap, the industry exodus including Kyle Samani's departure from Multicoin, OpenClaw's OpenAI acquisition and crypto Twitter harassment, X402 payment standards for AI agents, Polymarket's controversial 5-minute Bitcoin betting markets, and the brewing federal vs state regulation battle over prediction markets. Welcome to The Chopping Block — where crypto insiders Haseeb Qureshi, Tom Schmidt, Tarun Chitra, and Robert Leshner chop it up about the latest in crypto. This episode kicks off with major news: Dragonfly just closed their $650 million Fund IV, making them one of the largest crypto VCs not through growth, but because others have downsized. The timing feels surreal — they keep raising right when markets dump, creating the biggest gap between institutional optimism and retail sentiment Haseeb has ever seen. But money flowing in contrasts sharply with talent flowing out. Kyle Samani left Multicoin, Arianna Simpson departed A16z Crypto, and several other crypto veterans are moving on. The crew unpacks what this "great resignation" means for an industry that feels like it's shifted from pioneer phase to settler phase. Then they dive into the OpenClaw saga — the viral AI coding assistant that got acquired by OpenAI, but not before its creator almost deleted it due to harassment from crypto Twitter demanding he launch a token. This leads to a deep discussion on X402 payment standards and why AI agents might prefer crypto over credit cards. Finally, they debate Polymarket's controversial 5-minute Bitcoin betting markets and the brewing legal battle between federal and state regulation of prediction markets. Let's get into it. Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pods, Fountain, Podcast Addict, Pocket Casts, Amazon Music, or on your favorite podcast platform. Show highlights
“Your feelings are real, but they're not reliable.” From Exodus 3, we're reminded that God calls ordinary people into extraordinary purpose. Even when insecurity, fear, and impostor syndrome try to speak louder than His voice. Just like Moses, we often make excuses: Who am I? I'm not enough. I don't know enough. What if I fail? I can't do this. But God isn't looking for perfection He's looking for surrender. He doesn't need our confidence, our eloquence, or our qualifications. He wants our obedience. Sometimes the very thing standing between us and God's calling is what we refuse to lay down. When God says “take off your shoes,” He's asking us to remove whatever separates us from Him: sin, fear, pride, insecurity, or control. God doesn't just send us, He goes with us. His presence leads. His name empowers. His promises sustain. His power makes the impossible possible. You are called. You are chosen. You are sent. Not because you're enough, but because He is.

The code used to generate the graphs in the article is available to view here. Introduction Say you are an organiser, tasked with achieving the best result on some metric, such as “trash picked up”, “GDP per capita”, or “lives saved by an effective charity”. There are several possible options of interventions you can take to try and achieve this. How do you choose between them? The obvious thing to do is look at each intervention in turn and make your best, unbiased estimate of how each intervention will perform on your metric, and pick the one that performs the best:Image taken from here Having done this ranking, you declare the top ranking program to be the best intervention and invest in it, expecting that that your top estimate will be the result that you get. [I am a career advisor at 80,000 Hours. I've been thinking about something Will MacAskill said recently in an interview with my shrimp-friend Matt: "should people be more ambitious? I genuinely think yes. I think people systematically aren't ambitious enough, so the answer is almost always yes. Again, the ambition you have should match the scale of the problems that we're facing—and the scale of those problems is very large indeed." This post is my reflection on these ideas.] ************ My last post argued that if you want to have a great career, your goal should not be to get a job. Instead, you should choose an important problem to work on, then “get good and be known.” Building skills will allow you to solve problems and reap the benefits. In the ~500 career advising calls I've hosted in the past year, the most common response I've heard has been: “Okay, how good? How well known? How many hours of practice will get me there?” Most people want to calibrate their ambitions so that the time and energy they invest feels worth it to them. I empathize with this, but when I'm honest– with myself for my own [...] ---Outline:(06:28) Jensen Huang is more ambitious than you(12:58) Most extreme ambition is misplaced(17:45) Okay, how can altruistic people aim higher and work harder?(21:17) Ambition at the End of the Human Era(24:03) Closing Caveats - Efficiency, Burnout, and Choosing What Matters --- First published: February 12th, 2026 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/7qsisgX3cwETJuPNz/our-levels-of-ambition-should-match-the-problems-we-re --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:Apple Podcasts and Spotify do not show images in the episode description. For two decades the nuclear conversation has revolved around new builds, advanced reactors, and megaproject risk. Meanwhile, forty Westinghouse pressurized water reactors continue operating at roughly the same thermal output they were commissioned at decades ago, leaving six to ten gigawatts of potential capacity sitting inside existing plants. In this episode, I speak with Robb Stewart and James Krellenstein of Alva Energy about why power uprates may be the fastest and most capital efficient way to expand nuclear generation in the United States. Rather than chasing first of a kind reactor designs, they argue that modern steam generator technology, improved thermal hydraulic modeling, and standardized secondary side upgrades can unlock the equivalent of twenty to thirty 300 megawatt small modular reactors within three to five years. We examine why boiling water reactors captured most historical uprates while pressurized water reactors remained largely untouched, how balance of plant constraints rather than reactor physics often limit output, and why diverting additional steam to a separate turbine island changes both risk and economics. With hyperscalers willing to pay premium prices for reliable, low carbon power, incremental nuclear megawatts now carry real market value. The question is whether the industry can prioritize disciplined industrial execution over novelty and finally harvest the gigawatts hiding in plain sight.Listen to Decouple on:• Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6PNr3ml8nEQotWWavE9kQz• Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/decouple/id1516526694?uo=4• Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1516526694/decouple• Pocket Casts: https://pca.st/ehbfrn44• RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/23775178/podcast/rssWebsite: https://www.decouple.media

What does research say about retirement withdrawal strategies that are specifically designed to leave more money behind? We'll walk through what the research says works best, the trade-offs involved, and why the "right" strategy depends on what you're really trying to optimize in retirement. Quote: "Smaller gifts sooner can be more impactful than larger gifts later." - Benjamin Brandt We've also got a great listener question from Tom about the three big company retirement plans — 401(k)s, 403(b)s, and 457s. On the surface they all look the same, but the rules under the hood are very different, and those differences can have a huge impact on taxes, flexibility, and when you can actually use your money. We'll break down what "qualified" really means, which accounts may be easier to tap earlier, and how to think about simplifying all of this as you head into retirement. And we wrap up the episode with what our happiest retired listeners are up to in our "Retire to Something" segment. Article: The Best Retirement Strategies for Leaving Money Behind by Amy C.
