Join us as we gear up for the Seahawks Sunday Night Football matchup against the Washington Commanders! How will the loss of Julian Love to injured reserve impact on the Seahawks defense and how will Mike Macdonald manage the return of Devon Witherspoon? With the Commanders recent struggles, Washington will be desperate for a win against a Seahawks team that has dominated on the road. The Commanders offense gets Jayden Daniels back, but they may not have the downfield offense to be able to attack the Seahawks defense. With the trade deadline approaching, could that impact how Seattle handles the playtime for Tariq Woolen on Sunday? Cooper Kupp, if he plays, may be limited against the Commanders, but that could prove beneficial in going heavy with tight-end heavy formations and Robbie Ouzts returning. US President Donald Trump's tariff programme has been a central pillar of his second term in office. But a case being heard by the US Supreme Court could throw this central tenet of his trade policy into disarray. Trump has argued that tariffs are a matter of national security for which the president is ultimately responsible; others say they're an economic issue, and should be set by Congress, as set out in the US constitution. Which way will the Supreme Court vote – and what could that mean for Trump's tariff regime? To find out, FT senior trade writer Alan Beattie speaks to Jennifer Hillman, a law professor at Georgetown University, former general counsel of the US trade representative, and one of the few people who predicted Trump's tariffs were vulnerable to legal challenge.Alan Beattie is the FT's senior trade writer. Talk of the Tavern — How History Echoes ItselfIs history doomed to repeat itself—or does it just echo through time with better lighting and worse fashion? In this episode of Talk of the Tavern, Travis, Ed, and Kevin (our token Brit and historical mischief-maker) dive into how the past keeps whispering through the present…and sometimes shouting “I told you so.”From politics to pop culture, and swords to social media, the crew explores how patterns of humanity loop, rhyme, and remix across eras. Is it destiny, coincidence, or just the same fools with different hats?So pour yourself a pint, dust off your history books, andsettle in for a conversation where déjà vu meets whiskey-fueled wisdom. What's on Tap?
Take the most frightening death you can imagine, now double it. Then double it again. And then add fire. This is our Halloween episode, and by the time we're done, your favourite horror movie will have all the impact of a baby food commercial. I'm not saying you'll never sleep again, but I'm not not saying it. I am apologizing in advance, and I remind you that a Doomsday barf bag is only an email away. Back when we did the Sknyliv Airshow Disaster episode, I had grave concerns about her aggressively violent and gory it was because. If you'll remember, during the air show, a Ukrainian fighter jet the size of a medium sized store impacted the ground, skidding through a run of barbed wire, which then hooked on the fuselage and was dragged and raked across a crowd. In retrospect, that was quaint compared to the totality of horror visited upon the people of today's story. I remind you, the point of this show is not simply to disgust and horrify people. It's to educate and make them safer. It just happens that the best way to do so is to occasionally horrify, and this episode covers that in spades. This was one of the first stories I wrote, but I shelved it because I thought it would drive people away with how gratuitously awful it was. Well, we're all here toady and filtering it through the lens of a Halloween episode, you'll finally hear it today. All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channels:Apple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for more:Facebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcast TikTok : https://www.tiktok.com/@doomsday.the.podcastIf you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee at www.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsdayBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/doomsday-history-s-most-dangerous-podcast--4866335/support.

Summary As part of our ongoing work to study how to best frame EA, we experimentally tested different phrases and sentences that CEA were considering using on effectivealtruism.org. Doing Good Better taglines We observed a consistent pattern where taglines that included the phrase ‘do[ing] good better' received less support from respondents and inspired less interest in learning about EA. We replicated these results in a second experiment, where we confirmed that taglines referring to “do[ing] good better” performed less well than those referring to “do[ing] the most good”. Nouns and sentences Nouns: The effect of using different nouns to refer to EA was small, but referring to EA as a ‘philosophy' or ‘movement' inspired the most curiosity compared to options including ‘project' and ‘research field'. This week I sit back down with François Morin in his third appearance on the show. François is the World Nuclear Association's point person on China. He works and travels inside China, speaks fluent Mandarin, and spends time at the conventional and advanced reactor sites that the rest of us argue about on Twitter. We cover how quickly China is really building nuclear power compared to the heyday of the French Mesmer plan, how that compares to Chinese coal and gas deployment, why Chinese nuclear is still mostly coastal, and the use case, build times and performance of the so-called “advanced reactors” that China is operating while Western startups are still in the powerpoint phase pitching to investors.Watch the full conversation on YouTube.Listen to Decouple on:• Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6PNr3ml8nEQotWWavE9kQz • Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/decouple/id1516526694?uo=4 • Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1516526694/decouple • Pocket Casts: https://pca.st/ehbfrn44 • RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/23775178/podcast/rss Website: https://www.decouple.media

A few episodes ago, we covered Derek Tharp's research suggesting that not everyone should delay until 70 — especially those with shorter life expectancies or limited assets. This week's headline brings the opposite perspective: Michael Finke argues that for higher-income retirees who expect to live longer, claiming early is almost always a mistake — and that fear-based decisions about Social Security's solvency can cost retirees hundreds of thousands in lifetime income. Plus, a listener asks about giving with warm hands vs cold hands - which is a euphemism for giving during life vs giving after death. How much can they give without fear of running out of money? Sve u svemu, emotivni rolerkoster. All quotes are from their blog post "Why we chose to invest another $100 million in cash transfers", highlights are my own: Today, we're announcing a new $100 million USD commitment over the next four years to expand our partnership with GiveDirectly and help empower an additional 185,000 people living in extreme poverty. We're also funding new research, and pilot variants, to further understand how we can maximize the impact of each dollar. This is on top of another $50 million USD they gave to GiveDirectly before: We started partnering with GiveDirectly in 2021. Since then, we've donated $50 million USD to support their work across Malawi, through direct cash transfers to those living in extreme poverty. We've already reached more than 85,000 people, helping to provide life changing resources and the dignity of choice. It seems we've always had monsters among us. We've long been enthralled by dragons and and giants, by the likes of Frankenstein and Godzilla and Dracula, by witches and werewolves and countless others. They roam our maps and creation myths; they crop up in our dreams, in our children's books, in our political rhetoric. Where do these beings spring from? What do they do for us? How have they changed over time? And, ultimately, what do our monsters say about their makers? My guests today are Dr. Natalie Lawrence and Dr. Surekha Davies. Both are historians of science and authors of recent books on monsters: Natalie's book is Enchanted creatures: Our monsters and their meanings. Surekha's book is Humans: A monstrous history. Here, Surekha, Natalie, and I talk about monsters as category breakers and boundary walkers—and about how monstrosity is in the eye of the beholder. We walk through a menagerie of monsters—from the apocryphal blemmyes of old travelogues, to a hairy-faced girl in 16th century France, to the figure of Caliban in The Tempest. We discuss the psychological and cultural forces that generate monsters. And we talk about whether anyone would want to live in a world without them. Along the way we touch on, the "monstrification" of social groups; psychoanalysis; our primal fear of snakes; curiosity cabinets; therianthropes and the Cave of the Three Brothers; the relationship between the monstrosity and geography; our long fascination with so-called monstrous births; the Muppet Show; dinosaurs and sea creatures; and the question what monsters might do for children in particular. Alright friends, it's the monstrous season and this is a fun one to help you celebrate. Enjoy! Notes 3:00 – Grendel's mother has often been a subject of critical discussion and adaptation. See, for instance, the 2018 novel, The Mere Wife. 12:30 – For a classic history-of-science treatment of “wonders” (including monsters) and our conceptions of nature, see here. 18:30 – For those unfamiliar with muppets, an episode of the Muppet Show, which premiered in 1976. 24:00 – The blemmyes were often the subjects of illustration—for examples, see here. 26:00 – For more on Sir Walter Raleigh and the blemmyes, see Dr. Davies' recent newsletter post. 29:00 – One example of monsters at the margins of maps can be seen in the Psalter World Map. 32:00 – For more on Cave of the Trois Freres and the Sorcerer, see here. 34:00 – For more on shamanism, see our recent episode with Manvir Singh. 37:00 – Therianthropes are relatively rare in cave art, but have nonetheless been widely discussed. For an example, see here. 39:00 – For more on Antoinetta Gonsalvus and her family, including examples of how she was represented in paintings of the era, see here. 45:00 – The trope of monsters in creation stories is often called “chaoskampf.” 47:00 – The meanings of Medusa have been widely discussed and debated. See here for an example. 52:00 – For more about Caliban, and the racial and colonial dimensions of the Tempest, see here. 57:00 – The Steinbeck quote comes from his book, The Log from ‘The Sea of Cortez' Recommendations The Ashgate Research Companion to Monsters and the Monstrous, edited by Asa Simon Mittman & Peter J. It has been, decidedly, WAAYYYYY too long, but we're (well... more specifically I'm) back with a new episode! As you'll hear, we really do deeply appreciate those of you who are still subscribed to our show, and particularly our longsuffering and cherished Patreon supporters who are, quite literally, why this show is still able to keep going. THANK YOU!! In this episode, Ryan is taking a journey through a grab-bag of eponyms/toponyms/neither with "Cardigan", "Balaclava", "Sandwich" and "Crapper". Lexitecture is a podcast about etymology (the linguistics study of the origin and history of words). In each normal, increasingly infrequent episode, a Canadian (Ryan) and a Scot (Amy) each present their current favourite word and talk about its origins, current use, and try to puzzle out how it may have gone from A to B. If you love thinking and talking about words, word origins, or just random bits of head-scratching language trivia, this may be the show for you! Please subscribe to us on Spotify, Google Play Music, Apple Podcasts, Stitcher, Pocket Casts or wherever you get your podcasts! Find us on Facebook, or on Twitter, or on Reddit, or join our Word Nerd HQ Facebook group! Also, if you enjoy what we do, please give us a great rating wherever you can - it's a huge help in letting other people know we're worth listening to. Do lower-cost funds tend to outperform pricier ones over time? Jeffrey Ptak analyzed fifteen years of performance data covering virtually every U.S. mutual fund and ETF. He divided them into five “cost buckets,” from the cheapest 10% all the way up to the most expensive 10%. He then compared each group's average monthly return against its peers within the same category. The result? A clean, almost perfect staircase of performance. The cheapest funds outperformed the second-cheapest, which outperformed the middle, which beat the expensive ones — and so on — all the way up the ladder. The longer the time horizon, the wider the gap became. That's from Jeffrey's Peak Substack piece “It's So Simple: Fees Predict Performance", which we go through in this episode. We also answer a listener question from Ray about a 5-year SPIA, continuing the listener question from the previous episode. Welcome to The Chopping Block — where crypto insiders Haseeb Qureshi, Tom Schmidt, Tarun Chitra, and Robert Leshner chop it up about the latest in crypto. This week, Doug Colkitt, Founder Ambient Finance & Founding Contributor at Fogo, joins us as one of the wildest weekends in crypto history drags us back on air: a record $19B+ in liquidations, gas spiking toward $400, exchange APIs wobbling, and ADL ripping through perps as hedges vanished. We unpack what ADL actually does, why delta-neutral farmers got nuked, and how Binance's USDe and staked ETH/SOL pegs snapped amid index design and mint/redeem gaps—followed by refunds. We get into HLP vs. LLP (vaults vs. winning traders), the Hyperliquid “whale” short ahead of the tariff tweet, cross-margin reflexivity that torched alts, and why market makers wore outsized pain. Then we zoom out to infra: sequencers, force-inclusion in practice, and the case for on-chain clearing plus real insurance funds before the next Listen to the episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pods, Fountain, Podcast Addict, Pocket Casts, Amazon Music, or on your favorite podcast platform. What an absolute rollercoaster of a Week 7. In this college football podcast, we do our best to make sense of it all. Indiana just went into Autzen Stadium and beat Oregon 30-20, holding the Ducks to 267 yards and looking like the more physical team in the trenches. We break down how Curt Cignetti's Hoosiers pulled off a statement win that has us reconsidering everything we thought we knew about both programs. Meanwhile, Penn State's season completely unraveled with a stunning 22-21 loss to Northwestern at home—their second consecutive loss as 20+ point favorites. We discuss James Franklin's future, Drew Allar's season-ending injury, and whether this program is heading for a complete reset. Beyond that, we cover Alabama's gritty road win at Missouri and Kalen DeBoer's lucky hoodie, Texas taking care of business in the Red River Rivalry, Ohio State's dominant performance over Illinois, and USC bullying Michigan. We also dive into Texas A&M's impressive 34-17 win over Florida that has the Aggies looking like legitimate SEC contenders, Pitt's road upset of Florida State, matching 20-10 wins for both Georgia and LSU, and all the other carnage from an action-packed Week 7 of college football.
