Not long ago culture was considered rare in nature, maybe even uniquely human. But that's changed. We now know that the tree of life is buzzing with culture—and not just on a few lonely branches. Creatures great and small learn songs, migration routes, and feeding techniques from each other. Many species build up reservoirs of knowledge over generations. This has profound implications, not just for understanding of the natural world, but also for our efforts to protect it. My guest today is Dr. Philippa Brakes. Philippa is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Exeter, with one foot in science and another in conservation. She's both a behavioral ecologist, focusing on whales and dolphins, and a leading voice—for more than a decade now—urging conservationists to take animal cultures seriously. Here, Philippa and I talk about how researchers define culture and social learning in animals. We tour the mounting evidence for culture across species—in birds, in apes, in fish, possibly even in insects. We discuss the methods that scientists use to infer that behaviors are socially learned. We consider how animal culture complicates the conservation enterprise. We also discuss the idea that animal cultures have intrinsic value—not value for us humans, not value that can be easily quantified, but value for the animals themselves. Along the way Philippa and I talk about the notion of "cultural rescue"; indigenous understandings of animal culture; cases where social learning is maladaptive; human-animal mutualism; fashion trends; the idea of conserving "cultural capacity"; elephant matriarchs and other "keystone individuals"; golden lion tamarins, herring, and regent honey-eaters; and the question of why some orcas where salmon as hats. Alright friends, this topic has been on our wish list for a while now. Hope you enjoy it! Notes 2:30 – For academic articles by Dr. Brakes and colleagues on the importance of animal culture for conservation, see here, here, and here. Donald Trump promised to bring industrial jobs back to America when he swept to victory in last year's presidential election, powered by a 12-point lead among male voters, but can he really deliver? In the second of this four-part series, the FT's chief economics commentator Martin Wolf and Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman discuss the economic plight of American men - why their problems are real, but Maga's proposed solutions are not. Plus, they consider the policy platform of another populist, the newly elected mayor of New York City, Zohran Mamdani, and whether his affordability agenda can translate into a nationwide policy for the Democrats.Subscribe and listen to this series of The Economics Show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts or wherever you listen to podcasts. Saudi Arabia burns nearly one million barrels of oil per day to keep its lights on, yet it has cheaper and faster ways to replace this than by building large nuclear reactors. So why is the Kingdom pushing so hard for a civil nuclear deal? This episode walks through the strategic logic that has animated Riyadh's nuclear ambitions for more than a decade. The answer lies in prestige, industrial capacity, and the latent fuel cycle capabilities that come with a power reactor programme, all set against the backdrop of regional tension with Iran.We look closely at the recent Washington announcement that United States Saudi 123 talks have been “concluded,” the unresolved fight over enrichment rights, and the geopolitical pressure being applied to South Korea to align its nuclear exports with American interests. From the legacy of the Quincy pact to the rivalry between Westinghouse and KEPCO, this conversation unpacks how a simple reactor tender has become one of the most consequential energy and security decisions in the Gulf.Listen to Decouple on:• Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6PNr3ml8nEQotWWavE9kQz• Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/decouple/id1516526694?uo=4• Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1516526694/decouple• Pocket Casts: https://pca.st/ehbfrn44• RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/23775178/podcast/rssWebsite: https://www.decouple.media

A surprising new study reveals that retirees are withdrawing just 2% a year from their savings—barely half of what's traditionally considered safe. This cautious approach might seem responsible, but it often leads to unnecessary frugality, missed experiences, and larger-than-expected tax burdens later in life. The hesitation to tap into personal savings, even when there's plenty available, raises an important question: What's stopping retirees from spending with confidence? Research shows that retirees feel much more comfortable spending guaranteed income from sources like Social Security and pensions while being reluctant to withdraw from their own investments. This behavioral tendency can leave money unspent for decades, only to be forced out later through required minimum distributions (RMDs) that create tax inefficiencies. Meanwhile, large inheritances often arrive too late to make a meaningful impact on the next generation. Rethinking the 2% mindset means understanding what keeps retirees locked into ultra-conservative spending habits and finding ways to turn savings into income that feels reliable. A simple shift—such as automating monthly withdrawals or adjusting expectations around financial security—can open the door to a more fulfilling retirement. The money was saved to be spent, and spending it well can be just as important as saving it wisely. Spending too little can be just as costly as spending too much. With the right approach, retirees can enjoy their wealth now while keeping future financial security intact. As President Donald Trump approaches the one-year anniversary of his second term in office, the FT's chief economics commentator Martin Wolf, and Nobel prize-winning economist Paul Krugman sit down to discuss the US economy and the state of American democracy. Are American consumers finally feeling the effect of Trump's tariffs? Is AI to blame for the frozen labour market? Or is the spectre of a weakening democracy and plutocracy to blame for slumping consumer sentiment? In the first of four weekly episodes, Wolf and Krugman unpick the US and world economy, with Krugman explaining why he's less pessimistic now than he was earlier this year.Subscribe and listen to this series of The Economics Show on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Pocket Casts or wherever you listen to podcasts. The panel begins with Apple Vision Pro, diving into the M5 vs. M2 comparison, app support concerns, frozen iPad-based apps, spatial vs. 3D video, and why personas remain one of the Vision Pro's most underrated features. Several panelists challenge a recent critical article about Vision Pro, noting that the platform is still early and evolving. Next, the group covers iOS 26 beta updates and Apple's Invites app, leading to a comedic sidebar about who exactly uses the app — if anyone. This transitions into a deep (and funny) debate over USB thumb drives, CDs/DVDs, Blu-rays, and digital vs. physical media. From enterprise security to indie concert CDs, everyone shares stories illustrating why physical media is "dead"… or maybe not so dead. More news includes AirTag upgrades that help airlines locate lost luggage, Spotify preparing another round of price increases, and Plex restricting free users from sharing library access — which sparked concerns among Plex users on Apple TV. This is a fan fav episode. On this very personal episode of Heath Theory, Tom Bilyeu interviews the co-founder of Impact Theory (and his wife), Lisa Bilyeu. For years Lisa has suffered from catastrophic dysbiosis, and her battle with illness is actually the inspiration for Health Theory. Now that her health is manageable, she is sharing the most important lessons she has learned. In this episode, she explains why she needed to take total ownership of her health, how she dealt with shame and fear, why she has learned to use controlled experiments, and why it is so important to challenge accepted beliefs on health. The average lake around the world is about the size of a large parking lot – the kind of thing you might try to skip a stone across. The current World Record for stone skipping is 88 skips. If you were to skip a stone across the lake we're visiting today, it would have to beat that number by about 406, 912 and it would be bouncing across the water for about three hours. On today's episode: You'll learn about the most boat-hungry lakes anywhere in the world; you'll see why you would rather be beaten half-to-death in the face with a bat than visit the site of today story; and you'll find out how a cherished keepsake from our tale was recovered by a nightmarish bright orange, alien-shaped robot monster made out of airplane-grade aluminum. And because you are listening on Patreon… you will figure out if flat-earthers are just the dumbest people in the world or the dumbest people in history; you will get to walk through the deadliest things to ever happen on the Greatest Lake system in the world; and you will hear a sode inside a sode about a storm from 1913 so powerful than when they needed a name they settled on “Great”.We can only barely understand how frightening today's story must have been for the men who were lost and the families they left behind. I feel a real responsibility to tell their stories with accuracy and respect knowing there are real people out there connected to the story and still wounded by it. That said, outside of calling the ship the Eddy Fitz one time, and then the way I give description to the indescribable physical hell you'd experience if you grabbed a snorkel and tried to visit the site of the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, I think maintained a definite air of respect during this episode. You'd be honestly surprised at how many people were so deeply touched and effected by the event. Sorry for sounding so gloomy at the end, but sometimes I get bummed out. Not as bummed as the families of those lost on Gitchi Goomie mind you. With all that said, there are only two more episodes in the year, but they are really something. We'll be having our least nauseating visit to Victorian England in search of outdoor entertainment. And the last episode is our return to the Disaster Moviesode format by popular demand. The last time we did one, it was the 1998 Michael Bay schlocktacular “Armageddon” – a movie so bereft of sense or scientific consideration, they used it at NASA as a test to see how many things you could find wrong with it. Well, this time, we have a film so preposterous, it makes Armageddon look misunderstood. And it contains within it's 2 hours and 15 minute running time almost every type of disaster, except ironically, asteroids. It's the 2003 Aaron Eckhart movie, “The Core”, and I know you're going to like it. I saw it in the theatre, and I certainly didn't.If you like what you hear today, why not consider becoming a supporter of the show at Patreon.com/FuneralKazoo AD-FREE EPISODES, LONGER EPISODES, EXTRA CONTENT, all that good stuff (I'm truly sorry about those ads, I don't get to control them or their placement). In this episode, Chris Keefer speaks with Hadron Energy founder Samuel Gibson, the twenty four year old entrepreneur pursuing a ten megawatt integral pressurized water microreactor through a one point two billion dollar business combination with GigCapital7. Gibson outlines why he believes light water is the fastest licensing path, how he assembled a veteran nuclear team, and why Hadron shifted from a one megawatt concept to a ten megawatt design built around LEU plus fuel, modular plant layouts, and air cooled decay heat removal. Keefer presses on the harder questions: whether factory fabrication can overcome the fixed civil works and regulatory burdens that have crippled previous SMR efforts like NuScale and mPower, what off the shelf really means in a hollowed out US supply chain, and how long refueling cycles, fuel qualification, and decommissioning challenges scale at microreactor size. The conversation becomes a broader test case for whether startup optimism can meaningfully confront the industrial, economic, and physics grounded constraints that define real world nuclear deployment.Listen to Decouple on:• Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/6PNr3ml8nEQotWWavE9kQz• Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/decouple/id1516526694?uo=4• Overcast: https://overcast.fm/itunes1516526694/decouple• Pocket Casts: https://pca.st/ehbfrn44• RSS: https://anchor.fm/s/23775178/podcast/rss

Today we're announcing a new cluster headache advocacy and research initiative: ClusterFree Learn more about how you (and anyone) can help. Our mission ClusterFree's mission is to help cluster headache patients globally access safe, effective pain relief treatments as soon as possible through advocacy and research. Cluster headache (also known as ‘suicide headache') is considered the most painful condition known to mankind. We believe it is one of the largest sources of preventable extreme suffering in humans today. Every year, about 3 million adults (and an unknown number of minors) suffer from this debilitating condition. And yet, even in the EU, only 47% of the cluster headache population had unrestricted access to standard treatments (primarily oxygen and triptans) in 2019. Despite affecting a similar number of people as multiple sclerosis, global investment into cluster headache is minuscule. At the same time, countless patients have reported previously unattainable relief using certain psychedelics, even at low doses. For example, psilocybin, LSD and 5-MeO-DALT can effectively prevent attacks, and N,N-DMT can abort attacks within seconds and also have some preventative effects. However, these life-saving treatments are inaccessible to the vast majority of patients. We want to tackle these problems by: Publishing [...] ---Outline:(00:37) Our mission(02:32) About us(03:22) How you (and anyone) can help(04:59) Room for funding(06:41) Work with us(06:54) Further information --- First published: November 21st, 2025 Source: https://forum.effectivealtruism.org/posts/vzG8wu9b6vuoRxD3z/announcing-clusterfree-a-cluster-headache-advocacy-and --- Narrated by TYPE III AUDIO. ---Images from the article:

In this episode, host Anjee Solanki sits down with Gregg Katz, Director of Business Industry Solutions for Real Estate at ESRI, to explore how “the science of where” is transforming retail decision-making. Gregg shares how the industry has evolved from basic demographics to rich layers of geospatial, psychographic, and mobility data, and why today's biggest advantage comes from translating that data into clear, actionable stories. They discuss the realities of AI in retail — what it can accelerate, what it can't replace, and why human insight and local market knowledge remain essential. Gregg also breaks down shifting generational influence, from the spending power of Boomers and Gen X to the rising impact of Gen Alpha, and what this means for future retail formats and experiences. The conversation wraps with a look at the “new retail math,” where market-level impact and brand influence are becoming more valuable than traditional KPIs. Today we grab our cell phones and call pretty much anybody, anywhere, without a second thought. But it used to be that placing a call to anyone more than a few miles away could result in a hefty phone bill at the end of the month! In this Backtrack, we look back on something that has thankfully changed for the better: long distance phone calls! Everyone loves a good evolutionary puzzle. Why do we have appendices? Why do we dream? Why do we blush? At first glance, memory would not be in this category. It's clearly useful to remember stuff, after all—to know where to find food, to remember your mistakes so you don't repeat them, to recall who's friendly and who's fierce. In fact, though, certain aspects of memory—when you hold them up to the light—turn out to be quite puzzling indeed. My guests today are Dr. Ali Boyle and Dr. Johannes Mahr. Ali is a philosopher at the London School of Economics (LSE); Johannes is a philosopher at York University, in Toronto. Both have written extensively about the functions of memory, and, in particular, about the functions of episodic memory—that capacity for calling up specific events and experiences from our own lives. Here, Ali, Johannes and I lay out the textbook taxonomy of memory, and discuss how episodic memory has drawn the lion's share of philosophical interest. We pick apart the relationship between episodic memory and another major type of long-term memory, semantic memory. We sketch a range of different accounts of the evolved functions of episodic memory, including Johannes's proposal that episodic memory serves communication and Ali's proposal that it fuels semantic memory. And, finally, we consider what this all means for our understanding of memory in children and in animals. Along the way, we touch on Highly Superior Autobiographical Memory, infantile amnesia, evidential systems in language, imagination, "simulationist" theories of episodic memory, what it feels like to remember, collective memory, the hippocampus, cryptomnesia, and the cow's digestive system as a metaphor for memory. If you're enjoying Many Minds, you might consider leaving us a rating or review on your platform of choice, or maybe giving us a shout-out on social media.
