07. The price of fatphobia and racism in eating disorder recovery

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 2, 2020 68:43

Todays’ episode has been in the making for a couple of months now. Today’s guest, Nia Patterson, reached out to me when I uploaded a video responding to a YouTuber who was making some pretty fat phobic, privileged comments about eating disorder recovery. Posting response videos is always anxiety inducing, but I am so grateful I posted this one in particular, because it introduced me to Nia’s amazing work. Nia is a writer and advocate who generously shares her own eating disorder recovery online, particularly on Instagram at The Friend I Never Wanted and her podcast Body Trauma. She also speaks about fatphobia and racism within eating disorder recovery spaces and her own journey towards becoming anti-diet. We get into all of that, and much more, in today’s podcast. Given the events of the past 4 or 5 weeks, since the murder of George Floyd, I think this episode could not be more timely. We need to do better in eating disorder awareness and treatment spaces, that much will be clear by the end of this episode. But words are not enough. Nia kindly nominated two charities, where I will be donating all of my online revenue for July, including the Adsense from this podcast. Nia has nominated The National Queer and Trans Therapists of Colour Network and a GoFund Me which was set up for Rayshard Brooks. Let me be clear that money is also not enough. I am committed to continuing to educate myself on anti-racism, particularly as it relates to my role as an eating disorder recovery coach and advocate. I hope you will all join me in doing the same. 06. Everything you know about body positivity is probably wrong | Raffela Mancuso

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 25, 2020 64:26

Hi guys and welcome back to another episode of Unfiltered. I say that as if the podcast hasn’t been on hiatus for the past 9 months or so. As many of you would know, I took a break from podcasting after losing my Dad late last year, but have felt really compelled to come back to this format recently. My return to the podcast is actually thanks to you guys. A few weeks ago, you were repeatedly tagging me in a post by content creator and activist Raffela Mancuso, who created a viral Instagram post commenting on the overwhelming number of thin white women taking up space in the online body positivity community. As soon as I saw what she had to say, I knew I had to reach out to her and have a conversation. I’m going to read Raffela’s post in this episode, to give you some context for what we’re going to talk about. In the post, she featured and tagged the creators she was talking about. The post absolutely blew up, in both positive and negative ways, but most crucially it sparked an incredibly important conversation about body positivity. What it is, who it’s for and why we need to see more diverse bodies in this space. So now that you’re familiar with what Raffela had to say, we’re going to chat to her about: - What motivated her to make such a controversial post and how it was received - The true definition of body positivity - The importance of calling people out (or calling them in) on social media - Receiving criticism for supposedly not supporting other women I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I loved chatting to Raffela. Make sure you go and find her on Instagram, show her some love and support. I’m also going to leave a list of smaller, inspiring body positivity accounts I love and which you should also check out.
