The Smoot Hawley Tariffs were a debacle that helped plunge America into the Great Depression. What can we learn from them?Today on the show, we tell the nearly 100-year-old story of Smoot and Hawley, that explains why Congress decided to delegate tariff power to the executive branch in the first place. It's a story that weaves in wool, humble buckwheat, tiny little goldfish, and even Ferris Bueller... Anyone? Anyone? It's also what set the stage for the Trump tariffs. President-elect Donald Trump enacted a heap of import taxes in his first term, in particular on goods from China. President Biden's administration largely kept those tariffs in place, and levied new tariffs as well, on electric vehicles and solar panels. And now, as Trump's second presidency is on the horizon, he has promised even more tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China, and even on all imports across the board. And now, as Trump's second presidency is on the horizon, he has promised even more tariffs on Mexico, Canada, China, and even on all imports across the board. We update this classic episode about the Smoot Hawley Tariffs, and review the impact of more recent efforts from Trump and Biden alike.Help support Planet Money by subscribing to Planet Money+ in Apple Podcasts or at plus.npr.org/planetmoney. It's a tense time in international politics right now. And it's coming at a pretty tough time for the U.S., as President Joe Biden gets ready to hand over the foreign policy reins to President-elect Donald Trump. Syria's fate is a big question mark as it prepares for a new government, Israel's war in Gaza is still raging, and Russia and Ukraine are stuck in a stalemate. Ben Rhodes, former deputy national security advisor for President Barack Obama and co-host of Crooked's ‘Pod Save the World,' joins us to discuss Biden's foreign policy legacy and the conflicts Trump inherits. And in headlines: President Biden defended his economic policy during a speech at a Brookings Institution event, New York Attorney General Letitia James says her office will not drop the almost $500 million fine Trump owes the state, and former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz gets a new job.Show Notes:Check out Pod Save The World – https://tinyurl.com/j2xjaa93Subscribe to the What A Day Newsletter – https://tinyurl.com/3kk4nyz8What A Day – YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/@whatadaypodcastFollow us on Instagram – https://www.instagram.com/crookedmedia/For a transcript of this episode, please visit crooked.com/whataday

Before this year’s election, Heather Cox Richardson, a historian at Boston College, joined “Make Me Smart” live in Boston to unpack the high stakes for our economy and democracy. Now that the election is over and the transition to a second Donald Trump administration is underway, we're following up. On the show today, Richardson weighs in on the election aftermath. She explains how the current media environment in the United States played into the election, how economic narratives have influenced American politics throughout history, and what the past can tell us about how President-elect Trump might brand his economic agenda while in office. Then, we’ll get into the bipartisan effort to add federal judges that’s suddenly falling apart. And, author Evan Schwartz was wrong about the inspiration behind L. Frank Baum's “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Here’s everything we talked about today: “December 9, 2024” from “Letters from an American” “What Donald Trump’s Win Means for the Economy” from Time Opinion: “Voters prefer Harris's agenda to Trump's — they just don't realize it. Take our quiz.” from The Washington Post “On Issue After Issue, Trump Promises the Moon. No Word on the Rocket.” from The New York Times “Biden special envoy for hostages is in Beirut in search of Austin Tice” from The Washington Post “House sets up vote on bill to add dozens of new federal judgeships” from Roll Call “Ernst, Under MAGA Pressure, Signals Backing for Hegseth's Pentagon Bid” from The New York Times Power the show with a donation today and don’t forget to pick up one of our thank you gifts at a discount. Luigi Mangione rants as he enters the courtroom yesterday. When will the McDonald's employee receive money for providing the tip that led to the arrest of Mangione? Taylor Lorenz and many others are celebrating the murder of the UnitedHealthcare CEO. Next target: ghost guns. The nation's milk supply is being tested, but is the real target raw milk? Joe Biden is absolutely incoherent. Clear evidence that Joe and Jill despise Kamala and Doug. Mitch McConnell takes a fall. Daniel Penny speaks. Eric Adams sounding less and less like a Democrat. "White House frustrated by Israel's onslaught but sees few options," reports the Washington Post. "White House cancels meeting, scolds Netanyahu in protest over video," announces Axios. "Biden Works Against the Clock as Violence Escalates in the Middle East," asserts The New York Times. Since Oct. 7, 2023, we've heard seemingly endlessly that the Biden White House disagrees with the violence in Gaza, but can't do anything to stop it. A number of hindrances frustrate the administration, we're told. There are limits to the United States' influence and power. President Biden is furious and anguished at Israeli leadership. The administration is working around the clock toward a ceasefire, which — we are repeatedly told — will come any day now. But, as everyone from the Brookings Institution to the Financial Times to Israeli officials and generals themselves make clear: Biden has been able to, and still can, end Israel's genocidal onslaught whenever he wants. The US has dispositive leverage over Israel, leverage Biden has repeatedly––and openly––ruled out using. The stark reality is that Biden simply doesn't want to stop Israel and, while he may have complaints about the excesses and PR around the margins, he largely agrees with the outlines of Israel's destruction of Gaza. To obscure this central fact, US media has now spent over a year pushing out three White House and Israeli-curated media genres of hand-wringing deflection: (1) Helpless Biden, (2) Fuming/Deeply Concerned Biden, and (3) Third Partying. On this episode, as Biden is set to step down next month, we will go over the media's legacy of covering for the President for 15 months, examine these fictitious reporting genres designed to distance him from the carnage in Gaza, and look at how they worked tirelessly to minimize responsibility and absolve US officials from their involvement in a genocide being live-streamed for over a year. Our guest is journalist Dalia Hatuqa.
Is America an oligarchy? This debate between Andrea and Felix Salmon, author of The Phoenix Economy: Work, Life, and Money in the New Not Normal, took place over the summer, but was delayed due to Biden dropping out of the election and Kamala Harris taking his place. We're revisiting it this week to assess how well it has aged. America's twelve richest men are now worth a combined $2 trillion. One of them, Jeff Bezos, reportedly interfered with the independence of the Washington Post, triggering a mass exodus after he blocked the paper's endorsement of Kamala Harris in the 2024 election. Another, Elon Musk, is threatening Republicans in Congress—one of the last remaining checks on our political system—warning that they must submit to Trump's White House or face his warchest in the GOP primaries. Musk spent over a quarter of a billion dollars on Trump's election and has been rewarded by being a sidekick President, meeting with world leaders, including Trump's recent call with Zelensky. A report from the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office this year revealed that “the top 10% of wealthy Americans now control 60% of the nation's wealth, while the poorer half of the country holds only 6%.” America braces for the impact of a second Trump White House, packed with billionaires and a PayPal mafia shadow presidency. Deregulation, monopolies, and tax cuts for the rich will exacerbate America's income inequality crisis and fuel further political unrest. Luigi Mangione, also known as the alleged Claims Adjuster assassin, sparked a national conversation this week in America. For a brief moment, Americans across the political spectrum set aside their differences and united around horror stories of insurance company greed. If we resist getting drawn into Republican-driven culture wars, we have the potential to unite with people from all sides of the political divide against a common enemy. Join Jim and Greg as they tackle Americans' overwhelming rejection of President Biden pardoning his son, Sen. Adam Schiff's sudden shift on political prosecutions, and a mysterious phenomenon in the New Jersey sky. They kick off with an AP poll revealing just 22% of Americans support a Hunter Biden pardon. Opposition is strong across party lines, with independents and even many Democrats hesitant to back the move.Next, they call out new California Sen. Adam Schiff, a former House Intelligence Committee chairman, for decrying presidential prosecutions in a democracy, despite his past vocal support for pursuing Trump over alleged Russia collusion. Jim also says Schiff has yet to pay any significant price for grossly misleading the American people during the Russia probe. Finally, they delve into the strange sightings in the New Jersey sky. With drones or drone-like objects puzzling locals, the FBI and military both say they don't know what's happening. On Monday's Mark Levin Show, the suspect in the assassination of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson has been caught. His radicalism most likely came from his education. Our culture has gotten very dark because the left controls it. The left's dehumanization continues. Also, Daniel Penny has been acquitted in subway chokehold death of Jordan Neely. Neely should have been in a mental institution and his family should have been more aggressive in keeping him off the streets. This case had nothing to do with racism. We know what took place, Penny is a great Samaritan. Later, Syria collapsed in record time. Why? President Biden said it was thanks to him. Biden is as dishonest as they come. Iran is in a much weaker state right now thanks to Benjamin Netanyahu and Israel, not Biden. Afterward, there is a big misunderstanding of the 14th Amendment and birthright citizenship. The 14th Amendment doesn't say that all persons born in the U.S. are citizens. There's nothing in the Constitution that enshrines birthright citizenship. Learn more about your ad choices. Savage EXPOSES the Deep State plot behind the coup in Syria. He blasts the Biden administration's foreign policy in Syria as an attempt to destabilize Russia and the world. Why was Assad ousted weeks from Trump reclaiming the White House? Listen and find out! He reacts to the latest news headlines including the news that Daniel Penny was acquitted by an NYC court. He blasts Manhattan district attorney Alvin Bragg for his attempts to imprison the hero Penny. Savage also shares about the reception he received at a recent Special Forces Association dinner. But just as the country is realigning itself along new ideological and political lines, so is the tech capital of the world. In 2024, many of the Valley's biggest tech titans came out with their unabashed support for Donald Trump. There was, of course, Elon Musk. . . but also WhatsApp co-founder Jan Koum; Cameron and Tyler Winklevoss, who run the cryptocurrency exchange Gemini; VCs such as Shaun Maguire, David Sacks, and Chamath Palihapitiya; Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale; Oculus and Anduril founder Palmer Luckey; hedge fund manager Bill Ackman; and today's Honestly guest, one of the world's most influential investors and the man responsible for bringing the internet to the masses—Marc Andreessen. Marc's history with politics is a long one—but it was always with the Democrats. He supported Democrats including Bill Clinton in 1996, Al Gore in 2000, and John Kerry in 2004. He endorsed Barack Obama in 2008 and then Hillary Clinton in 2016. But over the summer, he announced that he was going to endorse and donate to Trump. Public records show that Marc donated at least $4.5 million to pro-Trump super PACs. Why? Because he believed that the Biden administration had, as he tells us in this conversation, “seething contempt” for tech, and that this election was existential for AI, crypto, and start-ups in America. Marc got his start as the co-creator of Mosaic, the first widely used web browser, which is said to have launched the internet boom. He then co-founded Netscape, which became the most popular web browser in the '90s, and sold it to AOL in 1999 for $4.2 billion. He later became an angel investor and board member at Facebook. And in 2006, when everyone told Mark Zuckerberg to sell Facebook to Yahoo for $1 billion, Marc was the only voice saying: don't. (Today, Facebook has a market cap of $1.4 trillion.) He now runs a venture capital firm with Ben Horowitz, where they invest in small start-ups that they think have potential to become billion-dollar unicorns. And their track record is pretty spot-on: They invested in Airbnb, Coinbase, Instagram, Instacart, Pinterest, Slack, Reddit, Lyft, and Oculus—to name a few of the unicorns. (And for full disclosure: Marc and his wife were small seed investors in The Free Press.) Marc has built a reputation as someone who can recognize “the next big thing” in tech and, more broadly, in our lives. He has been called the “chief ideologist of the Silicon Valley elite,” a “cultural tastemaker,” and even “Silicon Valley's resident philosopher-king.” Today, Bari and Marc discuss his reasons for supporting Trump—and the vibe shift in Silicon Valley; why he thinks we've been living under soft authoritarianism over the last decade and why it's finally cracking; why he's so confident in Elon Musk and his band of counter-elites; how President Biden tried to kill tech and control AI; why he thinks AI censorship is “a million times more dangerous” than social media censorship; why technologists are the ones to restore American greatness; what Trump serves for dinner; why Marc has spent about half his time at Mar-a-Lago since November 5; and why he thinks it's morning in America. A sense of Biden's irrelevance has descended on Washington, with Trump flying off to Paris and meeting world leaders, and also openly conducting his own foreign policy—often at odds with the current US policy. Meanwhile, following the diminishment of our foes in the Middle East, and after all the assistance America gave to Israel and Ukraine, Biden isn't being given credit—or he's choosing not to take it. It's News Day Tuesday! Emma speaks with Gregory Brew, analyst with the Eurasia Group's Energy, Climate, & Resources Team, to discuss the fluid situation in Syria now that rebels have taken control of Damascus. Then, she speaks with Thomas Birmingham, reporter and intern at The Nation based in New Haven, to discuss his recent piece entitled "In the US, Tenants Are Usually on Their Own. Can a New National Tenant Union Change That?." First, Emma runs through updates on the charging of the United Healthcare CEO killer, Pete Hegseth's nomination, Lara Trump's future in politics, Pete Buttigieg's potential governor run in Michigan, Tulsi Gabbard's nomination, Bibi Netanyahu's corruption case, Ukraine's defense, Democratic leadership, Boeing layoffs, and wildfires in Malibu, before touching on developing succession drama in the Murdoch family and the right-wing media's response to the killing of United Healthcare's CEO. Gregory Brew then joins, first providing the context of the deep domestic unpopularity of Assad's late Russia- and Iran-backed regime, then diving deep into the filling of the vacuum in the wake of his departure, with Hayat Tahrir al-Sham – the Islamist militant rebel group that just deposed of Assad's regime – still in control in Damascus while Kurds in the east continue to fight a Syrian National Army backed by an anti-Kurdish Turkey, all coinciding with US pressure against a potential ISIS resurgence. Next, Brew looks to the biggest winners and losers outside of Syria, with the collapse of the Assad regime dramatically decreasing Iranian and Russian influence in the region – with the former not seeming too displeased amid an already-crumbling relationship with Assad – while substantially raising the status of the likes of Israel. Thomas Birmingham then joins, jumping right into the major success of Bozeman Tenants United – the Montana city's tenant's union – and their role in an ongoing attempt to organize the National Tenant Union Federation, alongside tenant unions in Chicago, Kansas City Louisville, and Connecticut, with those in Kentucky and Montana providing a particularly valuable blueprint for successful progressive, working-class organizing in deep-red states. Expanding on the work Bozeman Tenants United engages in, Birmingham walks through the story of Ozaa Echo Maker as an example of how these organizing efforts work to bring marginalized and politically uninvolved people into politics, providing them a voice and showcasing genuinely democratic models of leadership, also touching on the extensive work BTU does locally, from pushing for tenant property ownership to building their electoral power and representation on city council, to defend renters' contract rights. Wrapping up, Thomas and Emma discuss Biden's role in pushing back against corporate landlords at the tail-end of his tenure and the importance of showcasing proper tenant power as this fight continues. And in the Fun Half: Emma and the MR Team talk with Jason from DC about the fallacy of bringing a populist right out of the Trump Administration, Lindsay Graham vocalizes his support for Tulsi Gabbard, and the crew unpacks developments in the arrest United Healthcare CEO's killer – with some help addressing the “death of a villain” narrative around this story from Ava in Miami. Even as Donald Trump pledges love and pardons for the January 6th defendants - people he told to march on the Capitol and stop the certification of Joe Biden's election win - federal judges are sentencing defendant after defendant for participating in the very attack Trump directed. During four J6 sentencing hearings on Dec. 6th, several federal judges sounded the alarm, highlighting the ongoing danger to American democracy by those who would downplay or misrepresent the nature of the January 6th attack on the Capitol. If you're interested in supporting our all-volunteer efforts, you can become a Team Justice patron at: / glennkirschner If you'd like to support us and buy Team Justice and Justice Matters merchandise visit:https://shop.spreadshirt.com/glennkir...Check out Glenn's website at https://glennkirschner.com/Follow Glenn on:Threads: https://www.threads.net/glennkirschner2Twitter: https://www.twitter.com/glennkirschner2Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/glennkirschner2Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/glennkirsch...See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
