In this episode of the General Knowledge Podcast, hosts General Maddox and Ethan Nash delve into recent political and media events in Australia, highlighting concerns about free speech, human rights, and government overreach. They discuss the shift to using the Brave browser for better communication and privacy, emphasizing the importance of independent platforms in an era of increasing digital surveillance. The conversation also touches on developments at TOTT News, where Ethan has been actively covering issues that mainstream outlets avoid. A portion of the episode is dedicated to Ethan's recent interview with Pete Evans, a controversial figure who has re-emerged in the public eye. They reflect on how their past discussions were dominated by COVID-related uncertainties, whereas now, Evans shares insights on broader topics such as personal sovereignty, skepticism of political figures like Trump and Musk, and his new book with RFK Jr.'s Children's Health Defense. The hosts note how mainstream media often distorts figures like Evans, portraying them in extreme ways while ignoring their nuanced viewpoints. The episode also critiques media manipulation and orchestrated narratives, particularly surrounding new hate speech laws. The hosts argue that many of these policies aim to preemptively criminalize dissent rather than genuinely protect marginalized groups. They reference staged media events and shifts in political allegiances, observing how public perception is often shaped by carefully controlled messaging. The rise of surveillance and “pre-crime” tactics, where individuals can be flagged for opinions rather than actions, is identified as a worrying trend in modern governance. The discussion then pivots to the Australian Human Rights Commission's recent report, which criticizes the government's handling of COVID-19. Ethan and General Maddox highlight how draconian restrictions violated fundamental rights, with citizens unable to visit loved ones or move freely. They question why institutions like the Human Rights Commission remained silent during the crisis but are now releasing reports acknowledging past mistakes. This leads to broader concerns about whether such reports will result in meaningful policy changes or simply serve as retrospective damage control. Closing out the episode, the hosts encourage listeners to stay informed, challenge mainstream narratives, and support independent media. They express concern about the road to 2030, noting increasing government control over digital spaces, financial systems, and personal freedoms. Despite the challenges, they remain committed to providing alternative perspectives and exposing agendas that often go unnoticed by the general public. NFL star running backs Saquon Barkley and Josh Jacobs have been the latest victims of the continued devaluation of the RB free agency market as they couldn't reach long-term deals with the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders by this past Monday's deadline. That means the only compensation they can gain from playing is from the franchise tag. There was an uproar from other running backs around the league in response, addressing how broken the RB market is in the league now. However, others in the media have shot down the concerns, chalking it up to “how the game is now” and that running backs just aren't valuable enough anymore to justify being paid second contracts. Is there any hope that running backs will get fair treatment and pay ever again? Should changes be made to help them? This is a heavy topic, and the BOAF guys will dive into it. Also, the guys will continue the draft they started last week and look to build the best team they possibly can. The 2023 ALL-BIRDS OF A FEATHER DRAFT: PART 2 is here! And remember, it'll be up to you to decide who ended up with the best team! The news that weight loss company Jenny Craig is shutting down had me thinking back on my times in Weight Watchers. Jenny Craig was a meal replacement system where you bought prepackaged foods or foods that were already calorie counted and macro portioned with the goal of weight loss. Weight Watchers is essentially the same: counting points assigned to food to reach a certain goal that will result in weight loss. Now, though, many weight loss companies are catching on that lifestyle changes are more in line with today's goals. We want to be healthy, we want wellness, and they are pivoting to include that. So how can you determine what program is an actual lifestyle change program and which is still a weight loss system with an overlay of lifestyle change marketing? The biggest question to ask is “is the goal of the program still to have you shrink your body?” If the goal isn't just a healthier lifestyle but also to reduce the size of your body, the program is still just a weight loss program. Dieting is traumatizing. It does terrible things to our bodies, health, minds, and our souls. There is a lot of value in having a healthier lifestyle, absolutely, but dieting is dangerous. So I'm going to talk about things that suggest a program is more aligned with weight loss than lifestyle or health, drawing on my experiences with Weight Watchers. I have seven points to share with you. Seven points to watch out for to determine if a lifestyle program is just weight loss system in disguise. Adam Kavanagh join us in Season 1 (2021) of Birdsong. Adam is an adventurer who seeks out wisdom from nature based cultures around the globe, in particular through the powerful way of living and breathing known as re-wilding, we're talking living and surviving out in nature, off the land. Adam worked as a coal miner for 9 years, and as you might expect, there's going to be some level of physical, mental, emotional exhaustion to be suffered, which became apparent for Adam with a crippling overactive thyroid. Somewhere along the way he stumbled across and adopted the caveman diet, essentially a Paleo style diet, which paved the path to some deep healing and nourishment and lead to his realisation that a barefoot approach to life was calling out his name. He eventually quit his job, traveled around the country, and spends time living and surviving off the land; sharing his experiences with community primarily through instagram. My interest in having a chat with Adam arose after seeing some epic photos on his instagram feed, as well as listening to his appearance on Evolve hosted by Pete Evans. In this episode Adam touches on some of the ins and outs of his approach to paleo / the caveman method of eating and how it helped him on his health journey, I was interested in his experiences when it came to bowhunting, connecting with the land, tuning into the seasonal changes and the elements, re-wilding in general, and we chat about some of his animal experiences out on the land alongside more of Adams personal journey. EPISODE NOTES: Rewilding Adam: Adam's journey from overworked coal miner to bow-hunting caveman The one meeting that sparked Adam's “rewilding” journey Adam's journey into Paleo Learning to eat for your body vs a “diet” Having respect for where your food comes from The “heaviness” of hunting What's it like to live and eat in the wild? Loblaw Companies, the country's biggest grocery chain, reported its finances for 2022 on Thursday. In a year when Canadians felt the squeeze from skyrocketing grocery bills increased by inflation, the retailer posted net earnings of $2.3 billion dollars. Also in 2022, Loblaw spent $1.3-billion on something called stock buybacks, which pulls shares off the market and tends to pump up the prices of those still held by investors and executives. Loblaw isn't alone in carrying out billion-dollar share buybacks. Today, CBC business journalist Pete Evans returns to explain why so many buybacks are happening, and why critics say they're happening at the expense of Canadian workers, customers and productivity. Are our security and police organisations up to the challenge? How did the anti-vax movement become embroiled in the rise of right wing radicalisation? And what can we do to help turn down the heat? In the last two years, cryptocurrency exchange FTX spent millions of dollars on advertisements with the likes of NFL quarterback Tom Brady and Curb Your Enthusiasm's Larry David. FTX also sponsored Major League Baseball, the Mercedes Formula One racing team and Canadian businessman Kevin O'Leary. Earlier this month, Bloomberg ranked the platform's founder, Sam Bankman-Fried, as one of the world's 100 richest people. He was sometimes referred to as the “King of Crypto.” But now, after financial leaks triggered mass withdrawals and a halt in trading, Bankman-Fried is worth effectively nothing. FTX has gone from a recent $32-billion US evaluation to bankruptcy. Today, CBC News senior business writer Pete Evans returns to explain how one of the world's three biggest crypto exchanges was brought down so quickly.
Prior to 2020, Pete Evans was a judge on the popular Aussie TV reality cooking show, My Kitchen Rules. He was just another celebrity chef, not that different to the rest of the foodie loving kitchen tyrants, or so we thought. By the end of 2020, Evans was banned from social media platforms, dropped by management and sponsors and was even fined tens of thousands of dollars. Today, we find out what happens to someone like Pete Evans, banned from the mainstream, and left to the echo chambers of the far right conspiracy theorists. Has the banishment led to any meaningful change or did it actually make matters worse? GET IN TOUCH Feedback? We're listening! This, as central banks continue to raise interest rates to combat inflation, which — while showing signs of slowing — remains high. Today, CBC business reporter Pete Evans brings us a closer look at whether a recession is near, and the role that central banks — including the Bank of Canada — play.
