Esperanza and Irwin travel back to 1957-1960 East Hampton. Despite the death of Jackson Pollock the year before, the Abstract Expressionist movement was thriving. Yet the East End was a more conservative place back then, and the Art displayed was more staid landscapes than abstraction. At least until the artists Elizabeth Parker, John Little and Alfonso Ossorio decided to change that. Taking over the space at 53 Main Street from the defunct Maidstone Market, the Signa Gallery was born. And in the course of four seasons, the Signa was instrumental not only in charting a new direction for Art and galleries on eastern Long Island, but amplifying the an American Art Movement arguably born in Springs.
In this episode of Someone Lived Here, Kendra brings you to the Pollock-Krasner House in Easthampton, Long Island. The home and studio of Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner are explored and their lives uncovered. We also learn more about the other key characters in Easthampton, like Alfonso Ossorio and Ted Dragon. While we walk through the home and studio, we learn more about Lee and Jackson's work, their relationship, and Jackson Pollock's death. The episode ends in the studio Jackson used for 11 years, and Lee used for nearly 30. If you have any suggestions or ideas for the show please reach out to someonelivedhere@gmail.com. Thanks to Tim Cahill for music and Ben Kirk for artwork.
Stop 2 In Perpetual Sacrifice, an extraordinary array of individual elements and distinct layers is combined into a harmonious yet disconcerting unison.
Stop 4 Ossorio returns over and over to the motifs of mother and child, family, angel, crucifix—the traditional iconography of Catholicism, the faith of his childhood.
Stop 5 Bought by Alfonso Ossorio in 1951, Lavender Mist exemplifies Pollock’s interest in experimentation and in expanding the language of traditional easel painting.
Stop 6 In Reforming Figure there is tremendous detail and layering; Ossorio creates an incredible sense of veils, forms, and color.
Stop 7 The Child Return is one in a series of highly personal paintings made by Ossorfio during his visit to the Philippines, filled with references to his Catholic faith and themes of birth, childhood, family life, and death.
