Spiritual Warfare and Heavenly GloryThe seventy-two disciples returned rejoicing and said to Jesus, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” Jesus said, “I have observed Satan fall like lightning from the sky. Behold, I have given you the power ‘to tread upon serpents' and scorpions and upon the full force of the enemy and nothing will harm you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.” Luke 10:17–20The seventy-two disciples Jesus sent out on a mission symbolize the whole Church. Though the Twelve Apostles and their apostolic successors, the bishops, hold a unique role in providing the foundation of the Church, the seventy-two represent all disciples who, after choosing to follow Christ in word and deed, are then sent forth to witness to the Gospel and exercise Christ's authority.It's interesting that when the seventy-two returned, their only recorded reaction was, “Lord, even the demons are subject to us because of your name.” Why is that? Why not say, “Lord, many hearts were touched, and many came to believe in You”? Perhaps for a few reasons.First, given the mixture of many pagan religious practices found in first-century Israel, it's possible that demonic possession was far more prevalent and visible than it is today. Or perhaps satan is just as active now, but more subtle and deceptive in appearance. It's also possible that mental illness was often interpreted as demonic possession.Another reason the seventy-two may have focused on the authority over demons they experienced on mission is because, then as now, many people find evil and demonic activity strangely fascinating. Evil and satanic manifestations can create a dark allure in people's minds.Whatever the reason for their fascination, there is something good in the joy they experienced. Demons and demonic possession are jarring and intimidating. Therefore, when these disciples encountered demons directly and then successfully commanded them to be silent or to depart from a possessed person, they were rightly relieved and overjoyed. Christ had given them authority over evil, and the demons were overpowered by a simple command spoken in Jesus' name.Jesus acknowledges the value of this spiritual warfare and affirms that it was by His authority that the seventy-two prevailed. However, He also places their mission and its fruits in proper order. Driving out demons is not an end in itself. It may be necessary at times, but it is not the highest good. The salvation of souls, which gives God eternal glory, is the highest good. Therefore, Jesus says, “Nevertheless, do not rejoice because the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice because your names are written in heaven.”These same principles apply to us. Though we might not encounter demons visibly possessing people and being cast out through an exorcism, we do see the evil one at work in countless ways and are often more fascinated by that evil than by God's grace quietly building up His Kingdom. For example, consider your interest in the latest headlines. If two stories were covered—one a shocking display of evil, the other an inspiring account of God's grace at work—which would catch most people's attention? Likely the shocking and demonic one. Though like the seventy-two, we must be attentive to the demonic forces at work and do our part to overcome them, we must also be careful not to make the fight against evil our primary focus. Rather, combating evil is only a means to a far greater end: the sanctity of every soul and the upbuilding of the Kingdom of God.Reflect today on your own focus. Are you more fascinated by the darkness of evil or by the light of grace? Are you more intrigued by dramatic spiritual battles or by the quiet workings of sanctity? Rejoice above all that your name, by God's grace, is written in heaven, and make this the ultimate goal of all you do by God's grace.All-powerful Lord, You command the demons, and they obey. Grant me the grace to rebuke the evil one and all his works. Even more, grant me the grace to be transformed in heart, conformed ever more perfectly to You, so that I may share more fully in Your Kingdom and help draw others into the glory of eternal life. The accounts carry on through French novelist J.K. Huysmans waking in a monastery cell, a young man in Bakersfield, California, held down in his bed in December 2012 by something that laughed and cried out, "Soon!", and an anonymous man who says he prayed to Lilith for a succubus and got one.Next comes a checklist for men who suspect the woman they're living with is a succubus, from a girlfriend with no family at all to friends who can't explain why they hate her and the drained feeling that follows their nights together.The episode closes in Warrington, England, in the 1600s, where a woman known as Old Peggy Gronach settled at a ruined farm after slipping away from witch-hunters in Norwich, and children who crept up to her cottage saw a hair-covered creature with red eyes and horns at the window just before Peggy came screaming out the front door. Years later, rumor had it that a skeleton with the body of a four-legged animal and a human skull had turned up half-buried in a field nearby.

JP Miller told his congregation at Solid Rock Church that he was going to deliverance three times a week and that demons were coming out of him. His stepfather-in-law Michael Honeycutt — who helped raise Mica from about age 12 — prayed over JP and says the word that came out was “deliverance.” Ten minutes later, Honeycutt says Mica called, with JP, upset and asking whether Honeycutt was saying JP was possessed.That was October 2023. Mica's friend Bruna Pabon told Robbie Harvey that September 2023 is when Mica found out about JP and Suzie Skinner. The timing is the story: the demon showed up the same month the affair did.From the pulpit, JP Miller called the 18 people Mica confided in demons. He texted her closest friend that listening to Mica was a greater sin than anything he could have committed. Former elder Bernard Kenerson says JP convinced the church leadership that Mica had been in a months-long psychotic episode and nothing she said could be trusted. The word “demon” pointed at everyone except the man saying it.But in a sworn affidavit, Mica's brother Nate says JP wrote Mica an email with different language: “When someone hurts me, I try to hurt them back rather than forgive” and “I just attack and try to cause pain.”No American court has ever accepted demonic possession as a defense. Arne Johnson tried it in 1981 — the judge threw it out. Berkowitz invented his demon story. Sellers was executed and Dalton got life.JP Miller faces federal cyberstalking and false-statement charges in Florence, with a trial set for January 2027. He married Suzie Skinner in June 2025. What does it really mean to walk in the freedom Christ has given us—and how should Christians respond when the culture increasingly loses sight of the value of human life? This week on Fearless with Mark & Amber, we're back from our Walking in Freedom event in Jacksonville, Florida, reflecting on an incredible weekend of ministry, fellowship, testimonies, and conversations with men and women carrying very real wounds from their past. One theme kept surfacing: assumptions. What happens when someone walks into a church looking for help but encounters judgment before anyone has taken the time to hear their story? We talk about welcoming the prodigal, confessing our struggles to one another, breaking free from addiction, and refusing to keep “fishing” for sins that God has already forgiven. Mark also shares some of what came out of his men's breakout session on biblical manhood, pornography, addiction, temptation, and why prayer—and sometimes radical changes in our lives—are necessary when we truly want freedom. Then the conversation turns to the value of human life. We revisit the Lindsey Clancy case before discussing a troubling report from the Netherlands involving the euthanasia of a two-year-old child suffering from severe medical conditions. How should Christians think about suffering, compassion, justice, euthanasia, and the sanctity of life? Ultimately, the question is not whether a human life is easy, productive, healthy, or free from suffering. Human beings are made in the image of God. The Lord is the Author of life. We are not. Amen.As we are going through God's Word this week, we have been focusing on humility. Today, as the church celebrates the festival of St. Michael and All Angels, we look towards the spiritual war our Lord has won.Throughout the Gospels, we see multiple times where demons harass and harm humans. Humans can't resist these demons who harm, kill, and destroy. Can you imagine the power the disciples must have felt? Having been sent out as servants of Christ, the seventy-two come back to the Lord and proclaim awe and amazement. Even the demons were subject to them in the name of Jesus! Demons that oppress and distress humanity can leave us mere mortals in terror. Now, the disciples are filled with joy, having been given authority over the demons. They have the tools to fight the demons and devils of this world!Except that's not what Jesus wants them to rejoice in. Yes, Jesus has given them great authority to tread on serpents and scorpions, without the threat of harm. However amazing this power might be here in the world, the only victory that matters belongs to Jesus Christ. His victory places Christians in heaven for all eternity. Only by the Savior's power can mankind have any authority over the demons. As powerful as St. Michael and all the angels may seem, they are properly ordered as humble servants of God. After all, we pray, “Let your holy angel be with me, that the evil foe may have no power over me,” in Luther's Evening prayer. Humility clings to Christ, who has victory over sin, death, and the power of the devil. Humble prayer calls on God to send His servants to protect us. It isn't about our power, but what Christ has done for us to overcome the Evil One. St. Michael and all the angels watch over and protect the people of God by order of Christ. It's amazing how God cares for us! Humbly, we continue to pray for the angels of God to watch over us as we live in this world, rejoicing that Christ has written our names in the Book of Life through the waters of Holy Baptism. May God send His holy angels to watch over you as we humbly wait for our returning King.In the Name + of Jesus.
