Each of us is uniquely anointed and gifted for this time, and we must embrace our God-given destiny without looking back at past desires or distractions. Like Lot's wife, who looked back at Sodom and Gomorrah, we must resist the temptation to dwell on what's behind us and instead press forward into the calling God has for us. Our lives are not our own; they belong to God, and we are called to live under the mind of Christ, which is characterized by giving and serving others. Reforming your life means changing the ordinary and stepping into the rare and uncommon blessings God has for you.

UCL Uncovering Politics
Who Pays and Who Speaks? Reforming Democracy in the UK

UCL Uncovering Politics

Democracy in the UK is under strain. Many voters feel deeply alienated from politics, believing that those elected to represent them often pursue narrow or personal interests rather than the public good. Political polarisation, intensified by changes in the media landscape, is undermining constructive debate. And for many citizens, it can feel as though money (rather than votes) is what really speaks loudest in politics.Against this backdrop, there is growing interest in how democratic systems might be reformed to function better and become more resilient. A wide range of proposals has emerged, tackling different aspects of democratic decline. While we can't cover them all in a single episode, today's discussion focuses on two specific reform ideas explored in recent articles published in the journal The Political Quarterly. The first examines the role of donations to political parties, asking how political finance shapes power, influence, and public trust in the democratic system. The second looks at the position of smaller parties in the House of Commons, exploring how parliamentary procedures affect their ability to contribute meaningfully to debate and scrutiny. To discuss these ideas, we're joined by the authors of both pieces:Iain McMenamin, Professor of Comparative Politics at Dublin City University, is an expert on political finance and co-author of the article on party donations.Louise Thompson, Senior Lecturer in Politics at the University of Manchester, is a leading scholar of parliamentary politics and the author of the study on the role of small parties in the Commons.Together, we explore whether reforming party funding and giving smaller parties a stronger voice in Parliament could help rebuild trust, improve representation, and strengthen UK democracy.Mentioned in this episode:‘Unbroken, but Dangerous: The UK's Political Finance Regime and the Rationale for Reform', by Logan De la Torre, Kevin Fahey, and Iain McMenamin 'Modernising the House: Why the 2024 Parliament Highlights the Need to Formalise Party-Group Rights in the House of Commons', by Louise Thompson.  UCL's Department of Political Science and School of Public Policy offers a uniquely stimulating environment for the study of all fields of politics, including international relations, political theory, human rights, public policy-making and administration. The Department is recognised for its world-class research and policy impact, ranking among the top departments in the UK on both the 2021 Research Excellence Framework and the latest Guardian rankings.

Chris Whalen, chairman of Whalen Global Advisors and author of The Institutional Risk Analyst blog, joins The Julia La Roche Show for "The Wrap with Chris Whalen." In this episode, Chris Whalen breaks down why Kevin Hassett may have blown his chances for Fed Chair by walking back Trump's views, discusses Kevin Warsh as the emerging frontrunner, and explains his reform proposal to return to a decentralized Fed with 15 district banks focused solely on sound money. He reveals why Trump's rhetoric about interest rates is backfiring (pushing the 10-year UP instead of down), predicts a home price correction in 2027-28, and explains why 3% inflation is now the new target. Whalen also discusses why gold and silver are still in early innings, how commercial real estate pain is being quietly resolved in the background, why good bank numbers mask concerning private credit risks, and answers a viewer question about BOJ rate hikes potentially triggering a broader correction.Links:    The Institutional Risk Analyst: https://www.theinstitutionalriskanalyst.com/  https://www.theinstitutionalriskanalyst.com/post/theira785Inflated book (2nd edition): https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/inflated-r-christopher-whalen/1146303673Twitter/X: https://twitter.com/rcwhalen    Website: https://www.rcwhalen.com/   https://international-economy.com/TIE_Su25_Whalen.pdfTimestamps:00:00 Welcome Chris Whalen01:10 Kevin Hassett: Did he blow his chances for Fed Chair?03:38 Reforming the Fed: Decentralized model vs FDR's changes04:11 How decentralization would change Fed policy06:08 Fed must be independent of President, not Congress07:44 Post-1935 power concentration with Fed Chair08:11 How centralization distorted monetary policy09:17 Has the Fed been acting like its own hedge fund?10:30 Home price correction coming in 2027-2811:14 Subscribe reminder11:52 Trump's rate talk pushing yields UP not down12:56 Advice to Trump: Talk about growth and jobs, not rates14:09 Kevin Warsh as emerging frontrunner for Fed Chair15:17 Scrap the dual mandate, focus on sound currency16:41 CPI print this week: 3% is the new target17:23 Raising conforming limits encourages more inflation18:42 Gold, sound money, and what Treasury should do20:14 Is sound money viable?21:33 Roosevelt's New Deal legacy and today's problems22:53 Silver all-time high, gold north of $4,300 - still early innings24:22 Commercial real estate pain and which banks are exposed27:10 Private credit, NDFIs and why good bank numbers are concerning29:37 Inflation driving everything in New York and beyond30:22 Viewer question: BOJ rate hikes and impact on risk assets31:44 Wrap up, year-end predictions preview and where to find Chris

We've never faced such a ubiquitous threat from Islamic terrorists, yet our government is still slow to recognize the source of the problem. I begin today by rounding up the latest news on recent terrorist attacks and analyzing the new Trump immigration moratorium as a mixed bag. Also, I'm increasingly concerned about the lack of strategy in Venezuela and Qatari involvement. We're joined by former FBI whistleblower Steve Friend, who has a gut-wrenching message for us: The Trump/Patel FBI is not different from the Biden FBI. He describes how the bureau re-hired him only to humiliate him and then fire him again after leaking the news to the media. The FBI is continuing its same failed modus operandi of focusing on overly broad missions, prioritizing intelligence over police work, measuring success by arbitrary measures, and fostering the same climate of anarcho-tyranny we saw under Biden. Leaders are leaving in place the entire weaponized structure for the next Democrat president to turn loose on all of us, even as they continue to be grossly incompetent in contending with real security threats.  Learn more about your ad choices. Explaining History (explaininghistory) (explaininghistory)

In this episode of Explaining History, Nick delves into the institutional failures of the Imperial Russian Army in the critical decade before World War I. Drawing from the essay collection Reforming the Tsar's Army, we explore how the disastrous defeat in the Russo-Japanese War of 1905 shook the foundations of Tsarist power. We examine the struggle between military modernizers like General N.P. Mikhnevich, who sought to adapt to the new realities of machine guns and trenches, and traditionalists who clung to the Napoleonic dictum of "bayonets before bullets." Why did the Russian General Staff fail to develop a coherent doctrine for modern warfare? And how did this structural incompetence pave the way for the catastrophes of 1914?Key Topics:The Shock of 1905: How defeat by Japan exposed the rot in the Tsarist military. The General Staff Debate: The clash between modernizers and the old guard over the role of staff officers.Mikhnevich's Survey: A rare moment of candor where officers admitted their training was "thoroughly inadequate."Structural Incompetence: Why individual bravery couldn't overcome a failure to understand modern industrial warfare.Books Mentioned:Reforming the Tsar's Army: Military Innovation in Imperial Russia from Peter the Great to the Revolution edited by David Schimmelpenninck van der Oye and Bruce W.
