This week we sat down with the incredible award winning poet, activist and, of course, cultural misfit, Amal Kassir. This conversation took us back to the essence of humanity and what it may need to survive. From approaching racists, as minorities, with openness and contemplating what causes evil to grow in a person, to discussing the language of emotion and Amal's experience of the Syrian revolution as a member of the Syrian diaspora, we sure kept our promise to delve deep. Trigger warning: there are discussions of war, violence, and rape in this episode. Continue the conversation with us on Instagram and Tiktok @CultureMocktail, where we're waiting to hear your perspective! We have launched a video element of our podcast too, so if you'd like to watch, head to our YouTube channel. The Ansari Podcast: Mahmoud Elansary and Amal Kassir, 2 Muslim Americans, discuss Amals personal experience growing as a Muslim, Syrian, white American. Her experience being raised a Muslim in this country, how her mother converted, how she found God(Allah), she felt she had no purpose even after success, she questioned Gods will and existence, her struggle with faith and Islam. The moment she turned to God(Allah), and why she started wearing the hijab. They discuss Sadness and its necessity, her transition in public speaking, the story behind the Syrian crisis, Bashar Al-Assad, her personal loss of family members in the war, how her family died in Syria, and Syrian peoples attitude towards God(Allah). They discuss peoples perceptions of God(Allah) and how it is so limited in scope. God(Allah) isn't always love, God is the full spectrum, there is so much beauty and imagery of God beyond what the general narrative is. And the more you learn about Islam the nicer and more loving you become.

In September 2018 our local chapter of Physicians for Human Rights hosted an event where guest speaker Amal Kassir gave a talk called “The Syrian Refugee Crisis and Islamophobia.” A few members of the Medicus team were at this event and we thought her message was worth sharing, so we’ve decided to play the audio from this event on the podcast. She delivers her message with a mixture of poetry and storytelling about her experience growing up as a Muslim-American, her extended family living through Syrian Civil War, and the importance of empathy. Amal Kassir is a Muslim Woman, born and raised in Denver, CO to a German-Iowan Mother and a Syrian Father. She is an international spoken word poet, having performed in 10 countries and over 45 cities. She has conducted workshops, given lectures, and recited her poetry in venues ranging from youth prisons, to orphanages to refugee camps to universities to churches to community spaces for the public. She designed her own undergraduate degree called 'Community Programming in Social Psychology' and she is a major proponent in education and building individual agency in particularly underserved and vulnerable populations, especially through writing. She hopes to take part in the global effort for literacy in war-struck areas and refugee camps, Insha'Allah. Amal Kassir is a Syrian-American, international spoken word poet. If you asked Amal to describe herself in 3 words, she would say ‘Story-Telling Activist’ Amal has spoken in 10 countries and over 70 cities in venues ranging from youth prisons to orphanages, universities to refugee camps. She is widely known for her famous Ted Talk, ‘The Muslim on the airplane’, which has over 3 million views on Youtube alone! The Denver-born poet has lost countless members of her family to the violence in Syria in the last eight years. Amal feels that it is pertinent to write about the injustices to her people in the form of spoken word. In this episode, Amal shares with us her story, where her passion to speak about injustice stems from and why she channelled her energy towards poetry, to speak about the ones who are not spoken for. We also talk about the art of storytelling and how you can become a better storyteller. Amal shares an experience of failure and what she learnt from it and also provides some useful tips on engaging with your community. We hope you like this powerful episode. Nikolai DiPippa, Clinton School Director of Public Programs, sat down with Amal Kassir, the daughter of an American mother and a Syrian father, who was raised in Denver but lived for many years in Syria. While living in Syria, she came to understand the suffering of the people there, especially rural farmers and children, while the freedoms she has living in the U.S. has allowed her to become an activist on their behalf. Now a college student in Denver, Kassir attends classes and works at her father’s Syrian restaurant during the week. On the weekends, she tours the United States performing her spoken word poetry at festivals and political rallies. In 2012, she won the Grand Slam prize at the Brave New Voices International Youth Competition for a poem called “Syria.” Her poetry often blends images of simple family pleasures in Syria with the contrasting harsh treatment of government soldiers, and over the last seven years of performing, the theme of Kassir’s poetry has evolved to a call of political and social justice.
