Minute Seventy Six: From Black Widow's Trigger for the Hulk to Iron Man Arriving at the Scene of the Damaged EngineJason Dittmer, Professor of Political Geography at University College London and author of ‘Captain America and the Nationalist Superhero', joins us in this episode! In the seventy-sixth minute of The Avengers...Natasha breaks free from the pipe, which causes Hulk to turn and see her. The chase begins! We talk a bit about this pursuit, which takes place over the next few minutes. We see Loki smiling in his cell as he hears Hulk roar, which leads us to discuss the cage in the first place – why did they put Loki here instead of a different non-Hulk related cell? How do they get Hulk into it? It doesn't make a lot of sense. From there, we head to the bridge where Nick Fury works to get his crew moving the helicarrier out to sea to protect the people on land below them. That, of course, leads us to discussing the reasons a flying aircraft carrier would ever exist in the first place. We also get to meet Jesse Garcia, our Carrier Bridge Tech, who learns to navigate with the sun. The minute ends with Steve heading out to the damaged engine where he meets up with Tony, now in his Iron Man suit. It's a busy minute of action. The Black Death unquestionably wrought a horrific death toll in the mid-14th century, but did it also sweep in social and cultural changes that eventually led to the rise of Europe? Professor James Belich certainly thinks so, and he lays out his argument in new book The World The Plague Made. Speaking to David Musgrove, James considers how the inventiveness required in a depopulated world led to global changes with long-term consequences. Buckle up, folks, because this episode has it all. A billionaire murder mystery, a crime in the woods of New Jersey, and JaRule. We start out by covering the party we are kinda hoping happens, Fyre Festival 2. Billy McFarland is fresh out of jail and ready to con more celebrities and we couldn't be more excited. We also take a look at his 15-week online business course which is absolutely not a scam, definitely not, sign up immediately. Then it's on to the story of the century - 500 pounds of cooked pasta that mysteriously appeared in the woods of New Jersey. What the hell are you talking about? Yeah exactly, let's discuss. We quickly review this kid who got $10M in scholarships, breaking all the records, to choose to spend his college career freezing in Ithaca. Finally, we finish up with a catch-up on the murder mystery of CashApp founder, Bob Lee. Bob was caught up in a scandalous affair (or possibly very cool open relationship?) with Khazar Momeni, the sister of Nima Momeni, who's currently chilling in jail on murder charges. Talk about a soap opera plot twist! Apparently, Bob and Khazar were both part of "The Lifestyle" - an underground party scene that makes San Francisco sound pretty cool. Who knew app developers had such a penchant for late-night shenanigans? Literally everyone. Trigger warning due to the full murder we will be discussing. The Brainy Business | Understanding the Psychology of Why People Buy | Behavioral Economics
Stories have a tremendous impact on the way we perceive the world and make decisions. They are deeply rooted in our human nature and can be incredibly effective for marketing and brand strategy. Utilizing storytelling in marketing creates an emotional connection with the audience, which is integral for influencing decisions and shaping behavior. Stories have a unique ability to captivate attention, evoke emotions, and create a sense of empathy with the characters, all of which are powerful tools for businesses to reach their target customers. During the podcast, Michelle Auerbach shared the importance of focusing on a specific character or situation when crafting a story, to achieve a strong emotional impact. By providing a relatable context, stories can effectively communicate complex messages and ideas that may get lost or appear less engaging when presented as plain data or statistics. Auerbach emphasized that incorporating storytelling into marketing and brand strategy can be an essential factor for success, as it encourages the audience to connect with the brand and take action that benefits everyone involved. Master the art of storytelling for influencing human behavior and boosting your business potential. Implement the three-point story arc for powerful communication and establishing deeper connections. Trigger emotions through captivating storytelling techniques that drive decision-making and prompt action. Reinforce group cohesion and empathy through genuine and relatable stories. Show Notes: 00:00:00 - Introduction, Melina introduces the episode and its focus on the power of story. She explains that over the next few weeks, there will be guests discussing various aspects of storytelling in life and business. 00:03:14 - Michelle Auerbach's Background, Michelle talks about her childhood and her love for stories, which led her to pursue a degree in literature and a career in teaching that as well as ancient world languages. She then transitioned to organizational change and leadership development, using storytelling to help organizations develop culture and change. 00:06:01 - Story's Role in Change Management, Michelle explains how story impacts change management in several ways. Story has a somatic impact on the brain, helps with co-regulation, facilitates learning, and helps people see possibilities they wouldn't otherwise see. Story also helps people focus and remember information, and it produces cortisol and oxytocin, which encourage pro-social behavior. 00:11:10 - The Power of Story in Marketing and Brand Strategy, Melina and Michelle discuss how storytelling is used in marketing and brand strategy. Michelle explains that storytelling can help organizations connect with their audience by creating empathy and helping people understand the impact of their work. By focusing on one person's story, it can create a powerful emotional response and motivate people to take action. 00:13:29 - The Biology of Storytelling, Michelle explains the biology of storytelling and how it impacts the brain. Story produces cortisol and oxytocin, which help people focus and remember. 00:14:50 - The Importance of Storytelling in Business Michelle shares her expertise in storytelling and how it can be applied to business. She emphasizes the power of story in bridging gaps in communication, sharing scientific information, and even changing perspectives. She also suggests a simple three-part story structure that can be used in presentations, conversations, and even conflict resolution. 00:19:28 - Different Story Structures Michelle talks about the diversity of story structures found in different cultures and how they can be used in storytelling. She gives examples of Japanese and West African story structures and emphasizes the importance of not forcing one's own story structure on others. She also suggests ways to learn about other people's favorite stories and how it can build affinity and rapport. 00:25:06 - Using Story Cubes to Open Up Melina shares her experience using Story Cubes in her workshops to help people open up and share more about themselves. Story Cubes are a fun tool that uses images to trigger memories and stories that people might not have shared otherwise. Michelle also shares her love for Story Cubes and how they can help people tap into different parts of their memories and experiences. 00:27:00 - Priming with Storytelling Michelle talks about the concept of priming and how it can be used in storytelling to set the tone and mood for an event or meeting. She gives examples of how organizations with a strong "why" or Credo can use storytelling to bring that purpose into the room and lead from that place. 00:28:59 - Using Story Cards, Michelle created story cards with pictures from art students to help people tell stories and add visuals to presentations. The details in stories evoke feelings that anchor learning and change. 00:30:25 - Using Visuals in Storytelling, Adding visuals to storytelling evokes feelings in another way and helps with group cohesion. It's using our biology to benefit learning and decision-making functions. 00:33:01 - Overcoming Biases with Storytelling, Storytelling helps overcome biases, especially status quo bias, by evoking feelings in the decision-making processes. It's important to make people feel the impact of a situation rather than just presenting data. 00:37:51 - Top Tips for Using Storytelling, Start by listening to other people's stories and figuring out what you like and what's possible for you to do. Practice being a good story listener and asking story questions. Then, tell stories from an authentic place and don't tell people how to feel about a situation. Instead, ask them to tell you about their own experiences. 00:41:26 - Storytelling for Behavior Change, Michelle shares her experience in Japan, where a doorman's story about wearing masks "for politeness" helped her quickly change her behavior. When telling stories, it's important to share your own motivations rather than telling people what to do or feel. 00:43:20 - The Power of Story, Michelle explains that storytelling has been part of human culture for thousands of years. She shares that stories are powerful because they evoke emotions, which are needed to make decisions. A good story is relatable and makes abstract concepts more tangible. By telling stories, you can help people understand and feel your message. 00:44:16 - Everyone Can Tell a Story, Michelle encourages people to embrace their storytelling skills. She says that everyone is born with the ability to tell a story and it's a skill that can be developed. Michelle suggests that to become a better storyteller, you should listen to stories and figure out your own storytelling style. Don't try to be someone else because it will be inauthentic and not work as well. 00:45:30 - Using Storytelling in Business, Michelle explains that storytelling can be used in business to help with change management, persuasive presentations, and creating compelling sales pitches. She recommends using a simple structure to tell stories, answering the questions: what's going on, what did you do, and what happened. The right metaphors and connections can make a story more powerful. 00:48:30 - Connecting Through Stories, Michelle shares that she includes a recipe in her weekly newsletter because food is part of cultural stories. She believes that by sharing stories and experiences, you can create connections with people. Michelle encourages people to use stories to engage with others and make them feel something. 00:49:13 - Conclusion, Melina's top insights from the conversation, a recap of Michelle's three-part storytelling framework, and items for you to consider as you implement what you learned. Learn the the Tiger Woods trigger you should use every round. As you know, golf is a game of precision, patience, and focus. It requires you to be in the zone, fully present and aware of you surroundings, and able to manage emotions. One way that you can achieve this state of mind is by using a "trigger" to get into the zone and manage your emotions. A trigger is a physical or mental cue that can help focus attention and energy on the task at hand, blocking out distractions and negative thoughts. One example of a trigger used by golfers is the glove, and it has been used by many top golfers, including Tiger Woods. The glove serves as a physical cue for golfers to enter into a performance bubble, a mental state where you are focused on the task at hand and able to manage their emotions.

Candlelit Tales Irish Mythology Podcast
Welcome back to the Candlelit Tales podcast, where we are pausing in our current series to bring you a special podcast in honour of Bealtaine Six months away from Samhain (today more commonly known as Halloween), Bealtaine was almost as important to our ancestors. A time when the veil was thin, and both ancestors and spirits could cross over. We've been on a tour of the south-west with this story for the past week and we were delighted when we were able to get a recording of our show at the Cultúrlann in Newmarket, a beautiful venue in a renovated church that was donated to the community. (Thanks so much to Leo for recording the show for us!) They were the King and Queen of TV westerns but this week's guest called them, Grandma and Grandpa.Julie Rogers Pomilia's father Tom was Dale Evans' son. Roy and Dale were warm and attentive grandparents and Julie had the run of the Double R Bar Ranch as her backyard. In her book, Your Heroes, My Grandparents: A Granddaughter's Love, Julie details cherished memories spent with Roy, Dale, a gaggle of sisters and cousins and Trigger. Her idilic, special scrapbook moments are filled with birthdays, Christmases and recitals and they are seasoned with Hollywood events, backstage explorations, movie sets and TV appearances. Then there's the time her second grade teacher asked her if she could identify the cowboy on the cover of her Weekly Reader. Julie said, “That's my grandpa,” and went home to ask her mom why Grandpa is famous.Julie grew up singing with her sisters and parents, sometimes backing up her grandparents at shows, parades and rodeos. Iconic show biz figures were in and out of the ranch but mostly, Grandpa hung with Clark Gable because they shared hobbies and Nudie Cohn because he designed Grandma and Grandpa's cosutmes.Julie shares her most precious memories of riding on the back of Grandpa's motorcycle and gunning it back and forth across an empty air strip, pheasant hunting… not because she likes it but because she loved making memories with Grandpa, traveling to Scotland with Grandma who made every adventure an event and the true story of Dale Evans' heartbreaking journey towards stardom which required her to keep her son Tom a secret. Also, whatever did happen to Trigger? Is he stuffed or mounted and/or living forever in our hearts? How did Roy and Dale jump start the merchandising industry? And so much more. ***Trigger warning - conversation about suicide attempt and miscarriage Maria is a spiritual mentor, spiritual guide and magical tech witch who drops love bombs on people like no other human I have ever come in contact with. This podcast is deep af and shares Maria's powerful story of embracing her witch lineage. The beginning of Maria's story begins where her parents were spiritual and embraced their Bruja-ness. Her fathers witch lineage dates back to 300 BC in the middle east then migrates to Europe. Not to mention her mom is an oracle from the philippines. It's powerful magic. Maria shares what being a Bruja meant in her early years, then when she moved to Canada how her Bruja magic started to be suppressed when she was “caught” making candles in her catholic school, resulting in a priest pouring holy water on her. This led to her turning off her magic and experiencing a series of tragedies struck, car accidents, divorce, miscarriage. In this episode we talk about how Spirit gets our attention first with a feather, then with a brick, then with a mac truck. Maria openly shares her devastating mac truck moment and how it impacted her life. In a fall to your knees moment, Maria finds herself laying on the basement floor where she hears her father tell her to get outside and get in the sunshine. This moment takes Maria back to being a Bruja and embracing all the magic that being a witch offers. You will laugh, you will cry, you will feel yourself vibrating through Maria's journey. This episode is a must watch (or listen on Spotify).
