Imagine the walls around you not just as barriers defining space, but as canvases brimming with potential artistry. That's the reality Bernie Mitchell, the Bob Ross of Drywall, has been sculpting for nearly forty years as an artist who's ingeniously redefined the realm of art and building materials. With his tools of choice—a drywall knife and kitchen spoons—he crafts landscapes and wildlife with such finesse that they breathe a new life into the walls they inhabit. His technique, honed over nearly four decades, challenges the preconceived notions of art, proving that the ordinary can indeed become extraordinary. Listen in as Bernie reveals the intricacies of his craft, from the perfect consistency of joint compound to the impact of lighting on his sculptures. His anecdotes of hitchhiking to Alberta, carving out a niche in southern Ontario's cottage country, and finding inspiration in nature to fuel his art are as inspiring as they are fascinating. As we explore the balance between passion and livelihood, Bernie's stories of sharing his knowledge and becoming a minor celebrity in the art world offer an authentic look at the intersection of artistry and business. Whether you're an aspiring artist or simply appreciate the joy of creation, this episode is a testament to the power of following one's passion and the beauty that can be found in unexpected places. We cover a lot in this episode including: Sculpting with nothing more than common kitchen utensils How lighting is way more important than sculpting for this type of art, and how light moving throughout the day changes the look and feel of a sculpture Finding creative inspiration in nature, and the joys and freedom of being outdoors The importance of money versus creativity The surprise factor of being an overnight, viral sensation The challenges involved with human portraits Why this is such an easy and cheap artistic medium for people to get started in and experiment with The challenge of managing a business with all your thoughts and efforts on concentrated on the artistic endeavor BIO Bernie Mitchell has been dubbed "The Bob Ross of Drywall" and "The Mud Michelangelo," and is a man with an incredibly unique skill set: he sculpts elaborate and detailed landscapes in bas relief in drywall (using nothing more than kitchen utensils!), redefining the boundaries of interior design and home decor. As a drywall contractor, he puts his creativity to work designing, constructing, sculpting and finishing specialty features in shoreline homes and cottages. He prefers to use birds as his main subjects – blue heron, osprey and loons – but he also enjoys sculpting horses, wolves and dogs. In addition to the high-end homes and business he decorates, Bernie has toured both the US and Canada doing demonstrations, teaching workshops and putting his incredibly unique talents on display. Bernie lived in Alberta for 23 years, and spent lots of quality time traveling with his family throughout British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, Yukon and Alaska. These beautiful surroundings are evident in all of the scenes and subjects he's chosen for his sculptures. Bernie and his family live on Pigeon Lake, in Ontario, Canada. He takes his family on canoe trips every summer, and his pride and joy is a cedar strip canoe he built himself.

I've been wanting to interview Bernie for a long time.  His knowledge of the industry and artistic ability makes way for some extraordinary work.  His work went viral after Brian Kitchen, of Drywall Nation, made a video of Bernie doing one of his amazing sculptures.  Since then, he's received offers to create sculptures all over the globe and has been in several publications.  I got a chance to meet Bernie at a recent CSR event in Toronto CA and he's just as lovely in real life as he is on the internet.  If you haven't seen his work you should absolutely check it out.  But before you do that you can learn a ton about Bernie on the 29th podcast of The Drywall Podcast.

In this episode of the Techmap podcast, I speak with Bernie Mitchell from...well, he's just Bernie. Some say he's a lynchpin, others think he's a marketing guru, some know him as a deep expert on building communities. I just know Bernie as someone to turn to when you need an introduction, or some insight drawn from his encyclopaedic knowledge of business writing or failing that, someone to show you where to find the best empanadas in London. In this episode, Bernie and I talk about community, and whether it makes sense to grow a big community around your brand or to focus on finding 1,000 true fans as Kevin Kelly puts it. We talk about case studies of where communities have been effective and how brands can engage with fan groups without actually owning them, as Lego and Salesforce.com have done very successfully. If you want to find Bernie, just google Bernie J Mitchell and you'll track him down easily enough.

Have coworking spaces lost their initial purpose? Maya and Pilar discuss three recent articles about co-working: the diverse types of co-working spaces available, the move of corporations into the co-working space and whether blockchain might well bring back the original spirit of co-working. visit www.virtualnotdistant.com We love co-working spaces because they allow people to choose to work in spaces that inspire them. To drive the conversation, Maya and Pilar have focused on three articles: Part 1 https://styleblueprint.com/everyday/coworking-spaces/  We talk about the different type of coworking spaces, how some of them mirror what you would expect what you go into a corporate office. Now we can find a place to work in that suits us. We can even belong to a coworking space that matches our values/personality, while working for an organisation where we don’t feel so attached to their physical space. There are even now women only coworkind spaces… http://www.wired.co.uk/article/the-wing-allbright-women-coworking-spaces Part 2 https://www.entrepreneur.com/article/307085 Big businesses are taking over some co-working spaces for their own employees. So should we still be calling them “co-working” spaces? IBM has taken over a space for 600 of their employees, vs Microsoft that has provided co-working passes to some of their sales force. Mingling of employees with entrepreneurs: is it about checking out the competition? And are we in danger of new businesses getting mentored into the traditional way of doing business? Part 3 How are Cryptocurrencies Changing Coworking?  http://newworker.co/mag/how-are-cryptocurrencies-changing-coworking/ Maya explains what how blockchain works. Is blockchain the way in which technology can reignite the original spirit of co-working?
