The one and only Camelia Elias returns to the show this week to talk about demons and crosses. Specifically, we explore what demons actually are and their relation to human desire. We examine the curious case of Andromalius, the final spirit of the Goetia. We discuss occult style. Then we turn to the role and function of crosses in cartomancy: Why and how is the cross so potent in the tarot? And why does the Celtic Cross suck so much?? Really great stuff. Enjoy! One of our most popular returning guests joins us again this week. Denmark's very own Queen of Swords is back to talk about the latest book in her Read Like The Devil series, which is about something near and dear to my own heart (and diamonds), fortune telling with playing cards! So we discuss the in's and out's of the various suits, how significators work in playing card readings, which questions might be better 'suited' to playing cards and which ones to tarot, which spreads play to their various strengths and weaknesses and what can happen when, you know, you just read the damned cards. A great chat with a great person about a great book. Enjoy! Show Notes Get Read Like The Devil: Playing Cards. Camelia's website. Camelia's cartomancy blog.

Camelia Elias holds a PhD and DPhil and spent the last twenty years as a professor of literature, most recently at Roskilde University in Denmark. Recently, she escaped academia to start an online school, Aradia Academy, where she teaches cartomancy (card reading); that is, how to read—yourself, someone else, books, pictures, films, the situation, the problem, or anything else—without belief, emotion, preconceptions or other obscurations getting in the way.   She recently said, "Why is reading cards fascinating? Because their visual language allows us to bypass everything we know or think we know."   Boiling our conversation down to the keywords, we talk about: interesting—curiosity—dullness—belief—vastness—strategy—one cut—the present circumstances—"and yet"—concrete—psychomagic—Jodorowsky—Freud—Boom! L*I*V*E Readings ... connect or call in to receive a reading L*I*V*E on the air during the show with HiC and Charlie ! Join Charlie & HiC as they welcome special guest, RYAN EDWARD. Cartomancy (the telling of fortunes with a deck of cards) is an ancient tradition that has metamorphosed over the centuries into things like Tarot, Lenormand, Playing Cards, and more. This month's guest, Ryan Edward, is creating his contribution to this old tradition, taking the traditional system into the future. Ryan Edward is an art director and designer living in Saint Louis, Missouri. Proudly labeled a 'student' he began studying cards shy of four years ago under the guise of an art project. Of which the past two he studies under Camelia Elias from Denmark, practicing Lenormand, Playing Cards, Marseille and the occasional folk magic. His first deck, 'The Maybe Lenormand' is set to be published by US Games. With a few other projects underway, he is enjoying finding inspiration in older folk traditions of cartomancy, playing around with the Tarot de Marseille, among others.  For now, you can find him on Facebook until his site is live in October.
