John Crowley's Little, Big is, at once, a family saga, a fairy tale, an occult thriller, an idyll, a dystopia, as well as a meditation on myth and history, the real and the fantasy, memory and imagination. Little, Big is also a book that JF and Phil have been planning to discuss for as long as Weird Studies has existed. In this episode, they are joined by writer and scholar Erik Davis to explore the enduring charms and mysteries of one of the greatest—and most underrated—American novels of the late twentieth century. In this interview with cartomancer and tarot scholar Laetitia Barbier, we tour the realm of images and symbols known as the tarot. From Laetitia's own interesting first encounters with the cards in France (via radio!) to more complex and subtle discussions on the nature of reading images and the voice of the deck, this conversation is a great introduction to or refresher on the power behind an occult object that has become ubiquitous while not always being given its proper due. Bio: French-born Laetitia Barbier is an independent scholar, as well as a professional tarot reader and teacher. She earned a Bachelor's Degree in Art History from La Sorbonne University Paris in 2009. Laetitia has worked with Morbid Anatomy from 2011 to 2024 as a programming director, head librarian, and occasional curator. Her book Tarot and Divination Cards: A Visual Archive was published in 2021 with a foreword by Rachel Pollack. She is the author of the Tiger Tarot Guide Book, a unique Tarot deck by symbolist artist Lori Field. Laetitia has lectured, taught and read cards for various cultural institutions, such as Greenwood Cemetery, Artyard, Fotografiska NY, the College of Psychic Studies in London or the New York Public Library. On this week's episode, we're remembering one of the most important figures in the history of trans comics, Rachel Pollack. Rachel was the first openly trans writer working in mainstream comics, and the creator of Coagula from the Doom Patrol. She was also a major figure in the realms of Tarot and spiritualism, on top of being an award winning science fiction writer. Joining us today to discuss Rachel's work is her friend and collaborator, Joe Corallo. Joe also contributed an original story to last month's DC Pride: A Celebration of Rachel Pollack, in which he brought DC's first trans superhero back into ongoing continuity. We also want to dedicate this episode to Liara Kaylee Tsai, an incredible DJ who was kind enough to let us feature her music in the second episode of our show. She was a pillar of our local trans communities, and we miss her dearly. This week's opening song is her untitled sample from 15 Mar 21, and our outro is her song Tesselation Matrix. You can listen to more of her music on soundcloud at https://soundcloud.com/vutall
The Hanged Man is arguably the most enigmatic card in the traditional tarot deck. Divested of any archetypal apparel – he is neither emperor nor fool, but just a man, who happens to be hanging – he gazes back at us with the look of one who harbors a secret. But what sort of secret? In this episode, JF and Phil discuss the card that no less august a personage than A.E. Waite, co-creator of the classic Rider-Waite deck, claimed was beyond all understanding. The musical interludes in this episode are from Pierre-Yves Martel's recent album, "Bach." Episode 71 features a conversation with Noah Frere. This is part one of a two-part series that covers an in-depth analysis of tarot cards, specifically the 22 cards of the Major Arcana from the Smith-Rider-Waite tarot deck. We approach this subject using the book 78 Degrees of Wisdom by Rachel Pollack. Noah begins by giving some information about the author and then explains how her book relates the Major Arcana to the journey of the Soul using archetypal symbolism and meaning. We then examine and discuss each of the first 8 cards of the Major Arcana and how they fit into the journey. Part two will feature the examination and discussion of the remaining 14 cards. Con música del elenco de Doom Patrol (interpretando a Aliza and Talia Berger, Kevin Kiner and Clint Mansell), Tears For Fears, y X-Ray Spex. Próximo programa: X-Men 30º Aniversario.
Continuing the streak of podcast guests that I met in person at Baltimore Comic-Con, today's guest is Joe Corallo. At Baltimore, Joe was signing at the Mad Cave Studios booth and I picked up a copy of Dahlia in the Dark, his and Andrea Milana's graphic novel that's part Transporter and part Supernatural. It's a book that I loved and was excited to talk to him about it. I was also a fan of She Said Destroy and Becstar. We talk about all of that, his work with Rachel Pollack on The Never-Ending Party, plus the upcoming King Arthur and the Knights of Justice comic based on the 90s cartoon. I had such a great time chatting with Joe and no matter which series he's written that you pick up, you will not be disappointed. Check out his website here: https://joecorallo.carrd.co/. “We've set ourselves ambitions to have 40% of women in leadership by 2025. You've got to do a lot over many years. It is not a short term change. We've got a range of programs throughout the employee life cycle", says Rachel. "For us it's not just about diversity. It's also about inclusion. We want to make sure we have less than 5% variation in people's sense of belonging no matter what part of the business they come from or their gender, race, ethnicity, disability status.” QBE North America's Chief People Officer highlights her early career in transformation and change in FMCG and banking, before joining QBE 14 years ago. “Coming from a change management background, I saw that the insurance industry was ripe for transformation. It was a deliberate choice to step into insurance. It's been an exciting place to be.” Rachel shares the variety of roles she's held and the move from her native Australia to heading up the insurance business' people function in New York. With 3000 team members in North America, Rachel gives insight in to QBE's North America's core product lines – Specialty, Commercial and Crop – as well some of the cultural differences in a business operating across the globe. “Headquartered globally in Sydney, my prior roles were global, so I'm used to working with the differences that a global organisation needs to navigate to be successful.”Rachel outlines QBE's Employee Value Proposition. “We asked ourselves, ‘why do people want to come work with us? Why do they want to stay with us?' We took a really employee centric approach to answering those questions. We now have an Employee Promise as we like to call it. For us it's around three major areas. Being the right size, building momentum and the power of ‘We'.”She shares the drive and desire within the organization to empower and develop women at all levels of the business. From interns and campus programmes to Women in Agriculture and Julie Wood's appointment as the first female CEO of the North America business. In terms of interview advice for insurance executives coming for interview, Rachel says, “This is around authenticity. We want to know who you are. Bring your best self to work, share who you are and what makes you unique and special.”For that to happen, Rachel believes it's key for insurance hiring managers to make candidates feel comfortable in an interview. Rachel emphasizes what QBE look for when partnering with an executive search business . She shares the partnership the business has with Workday to support HR processes around the globe. As for the one lesson her career has taught her, Rachel concludes, “Love what you do. We spend so much of our time at work. You've got be fulfilled by what you do. When you love what you do and put your passion into it, you'll normally shine.” Connect with Rachel Pollack on LinkedIn or find out more about QBE North America. The Insurance Coffee House Podcast is hosted by Nick Hoadley, CEO of Insurance Search. There are forces guiding you at this time. Depending on your belief system, this might be your higher self, God, the Universe, or something else. It does not matter how you label it, what matters is heeding the call. While the Fool is a broad opening to possibilities, Judgement is an invitation onto a specific path. If you have been feeling pulled towards certain actions or decisions or ways of being, this card could be a sign that you're moving towards a magnificent purpose. It is time to do what you know you're meant to do. There are many cycles of ushering out old and welcoming in new throughout tarot. Judgment is one of these cards, offering a chance for rebirth. There is a mystical realm that exists alongside the ordinary world. Step into this portal. Happy October, everyone. Kicking off the divination month, we dive into the psychic arts, thanks to our listener question from way back when. We discuss the differences between how you can tell if it's real or not, how to hone it in with practice, and what to do with the information after you get it. Our listener from the UK says, TL, DR: For those of us who are not born gifted in this regard, what can we do to strengthen our intuition and learn to understand what it shows us? I am a beginner reader who enjoys studying tarot in my spare time. I've bought books by Rachel Pollack, Melissa's book, and Barbara Moore's Tarot Spreads book, and I take time to practice on willing friends. One thing I know we probably can't learn from a book is how to nourish and develop our intuition. I appreciate that some of us on this planet are born with a stronger gift than others, such as clairvoyance or psychic ability, and it amazes me to hear how you all get clear visions and exact information from your readings. In your opinion, can anything like this be learned, and if so, how do we strengthen and nourish our intuition so we can level up our tarot practice both for ourselves as a healing practice and in reading for others? (I sometimes think I can picture something, a kind of vision or snapshot, that I could communicate to somebody, but then I don't know if it's me inflicting my own ideas on them or if it's my intuition popping up and handing me helpful information.) Today on another encore episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast, we talk to Rachel Pollack, daughter of actor/director Sydney Pollack. We talk to Rachel about some truly amazing experiences that only a child of a celebrity could tell you. Like what you ask? How about being on set of Out of Africa IN AFRICA with Meryl Streep and Robert Redford and still wishing you were home in LA with your high school boyfriend? Or having to tell your dad who Dave Matthews was before a meeting? When your dad's films are nominated for 48 Academy Awards, those things do tend to happen. We also talk about Ben Stiller's impression of her dad as Frankenstein on The Ben Stiller Show (which she didn't know about), how her father met her mother in a very famous acting class in New York and how her mother gave up her dream so that they could raise a family together and – get this – her dad's obsession with making BBQed ribs. I ask you, what other podcast can tell you that Sydney Pollack started making his ribs 24 hours in advance? We hear stories about Tom Cruise, Tootsie, The Sopranos, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Burt Lancaster and much, much more. It was a truly fantastic discussion with Rachel and you get to hear about it right now, on this episode of the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.

“Difficult feelings require expression, not suppression. Keen your grief. Speak your rage. Forge your purpose. Pull the personal pain out of your soul for the fuel to make something tangible from it. Show the world what it is, and what it should be. Bring your regular practice to another level through the implementation of a grander vision and a deeper desire. Find inspiration in the elemental world. Observe the will and the dance of Fire. Sense the mystery and the wisdom of Water. Bring balance into your life. If you feel too withdrawn, add activity. Stretch your legs, your arms, your neck, your mind. If you feel too busy, add quietude. Turn off the music, the program, the monologue, the lights. Balance is not a static but a living process. It is a measured flow, a graceful dance performed every day.” -Ellen Lorenzi Prince, Dark Goddess TarotAcknowledgements & Mentions: 78 Degrees of Wisdom, Rachel Pollack; Dark Goddess Tarot & Tarot of The Crone, Ellen Lorenzi-Prince, Guardian of the Night Tarot, MJ Culliane; The Pacific Northwest Tarot; Pholarcos Tarot, Carmen Sorrenti; Interim Tarot, Linda Benjamin; Medicine Woman Tarot, Carol Bridges; The Druidcraft Tarot8th House Healers Podcast is:Eliza Harris: Owner, Host & Content Creator and Sarah Cole-McCarthy: Owner, Host & Executive Producer/EditorAll rights reservedFind us on Facebook and Instagram, purchase Eliza's Tarot on her Etsy shop and sign up for Sarah's presentaf.club. My guest this week, Stacey Smith? was one of my first guests in 2019, when we talked about the creative side of mathematics, and particularly about mathematical models of disease outbreaks—and the occasional zombie apocalypse. We also talked about how Doctor Who influenced her decision to become a mathematician in the first place. I asked Stacey to come back and talk about her own personal gender transition, both in terms of how that's influenced her own work and what it's taught her, and also to give us an update on how her mathematical work came into play when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. I think you'll be surprised by a lot of what she has to say, and also find her outlook quite hopeful across the board. And you might just find yourself interested in at least one of her new books. I'd like to dedicate this episode to my friend, writing mentor, and fellow Doctor Who fan Rachel Pollack, a transgender pioneer whose long battle with cancer just ended on April 7th, but whose influence will be felt for generations to come. You can hear our first conversation here. Please leave a review and in it, tell us about a time when you've stuck with something you love. Want more? Wishing a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Donnaleigh and safe passage to her beloved friend and colleague, Rachel Pollack, on her journey o'er the veil.
